The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat.
However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh
without losing both chat and video. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

featuring all our animal family members. Send them to

you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include
your real name and location if you want to. I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world! |

Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
Welcome to the mid-September edition of the newsletter! I hope
everyone is having a good weekend.
I may have to be fairly brief here, because me and the missus are heading off to San Francisco today to catch an opera matinee at the SF Opera. We are seeing a new work entitled "Dream of the Red Chamber." It is based on a best-selling novel in China, and when I was working at the Chinese Christian studio, it caused quite a stir when I announced over lunch one day that I had tickets to go see this opera. They got quite excited about it. We are going with my old friend from college and his wife, who is Chinese. They have not attended many operas to date, so it will be interesting to see what they think of seeing one of the more modern pieces. I have a 3D printer now! I turned the final screw on the kit on Tuesday, so it took me just about one week to build it (not constant--mainly in the course of three main build sessions. I'd say ten hours total.) I have calibrated it, and it is printing beautifully. It has some slight alignment issues, but not bad enough to keep me from printing. One of these days I will up-end it and get in there with some calipers and really tune the chassis to make it perfectly square. Most of what I have been printing so far has been photography-oriented. I am giving a presentation to the photo club this upcoming Wednesday--on the topic of Light Painting. So I've been designing a little pen/flashlight that has interchangeable tips for LEDs, multi-colored LEDs, lasers, or whatever else I come up with. With these things being interchangeable, I can whip out multiple light sources during an exposure. (Should make for a handy little flashlight or laser pointer, too!) It is great fun to working in additive manufacturing again! One of the first things I built was a bayonet mount to match my Canon EF mount on my camera. I did it, and it works great! Now I can print mating adapters that will allow me to mount just about any kind of lens or optical elements to my DSLR, including macro. The Action Camera swap meet is coming up in October, so I look forward to seeing what kinds of cheap old lenses I can pick up. Last time I went there, I got an old Olympus 135mm telephoto lens for $5. With the right mounting adapter, I can mate anything to my Canon. Speaking of picking up cool things for five dollars, I went to a church vintage sale yesterday morning. It's kind of like a big swap meet or flea market, with about thirty tables--all within walking distance of our house. For all my life I have lusted after candlestick telephones. They are so quintessentially 1920s Americana. And yesterday I found one, and got it for only five dollars! Now it's not from the 20s, but rather a 1970s replica. But still--that makes it almost fifty years old. And the kicker is--it works! And it has a rotary dial. I cannot tell you how strange that feels to dial it and hear the sounds, feel the spring--I really miss rotary dials! Of course, I now I need to figure out what I am going to do with it--since I gave up my land line last year. Well, it is almost time to go, so I'll catch y'all later! |

ChatterChopz | CC got an early birthday present this week. We went to the local animal shelter and she picked out two nine-week-old kittens to bring home. Here they are:
Tabatha (aka Tabby) | Sockz
Tabby is a really outgoing kitty. She loves to snuggle and play. She sleeps with CC every night. | The best way to describe Sockz is that he is most timid, most feisty and most fierce animal all rolled up in one little kitten body. He's learning to trust us now, though.

A Message From Zorro | StoryTime News | Recipe of the Week |
Hello there, Everbuddy!
Boy, we have been printing like mad this weekend!
Although most of the time the Dude sits staring at his
3D program, since that is where all the work is done
making the object that get printed. It gets really
tricky designing pieces to things that get assembled
after printing, and especially when connecting plastic
printed parts to wood, which is something the Dude is
doing with some of the camera designs.
Of course, while he does that I have been playing with his new phone. I like picking it up and playing gangster into it--like "all right, youse guys--this is is how it's gonna be. We're going to show up with a few of our Tommy guns and we're going to put on a show for ya. Understand??" Actually, I guess I'm just acting out the old Star Trek episode where they beam down to a planet whose society has copied the mobland of Chicago in the 1930s. Well, it's time to go take my nap--preceded by a little cheesy snack! |

TANTIVY
Pronunciation: \tan-TIV-ee\
adverb
Definition of TANTIVY
at a gallop
EXAMPLES
The horse rushed tantivy over the dirt roads that wound
through the fields and pastures.
"Thus it came about that Denby and his man, riding tantivy to the rescue,
met the raiders two miles down the trail…."
— Francis Lynde, The Helpers, 1899
DID YOU KNOW?
Tantivy is an adverb as well as a noun that refers to a rapid gallop. Although its precise origin isn't known,
one theory has it that tantivy represents the sound of a galloping horse’s hooves. The noun does
double duty as a word meaning "the blare of a trumpet or horn." This is probably due to confusion
with tantara, a word for the sound of a trumpet that came about as an imitation of that
sound. Both tantivy and tantara were used during foxhunts; in the heat of the chase,
people may have jumbled the two.
