Channel Links |
The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat.
However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh
without losing both chat and video. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

|
If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews
website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page
featuring all our animal family members. Send them to
vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure
you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include
your real name and location if you want to. I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world! |

Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
Welcome to August! I hope everyone is doing well and not getting
blasted by the heat too badly. Things have not been too bad
around here this weekend. In the mid 90s, but short of the
hundreds we had a week ago.
We have been catching some of the Olympics around here. Some cycling, some swimming, some volleyball. Just saw some fencing--boy, that sure is a strange sport. All this wiring and hi-tech gadgetry...it's a far cry from the Three Musketeers! I have been working at home for a couple of days, after a long and stressful work and commuting stretch at the Chinese Christian School. The drive is about 55 miles each way, so it has been a welcome relief to not have to make that drive for a couple of days. We are in a lull in the fair-going circuit, as the Solano Fair was last week, and the Yolo County Fair is starting on the 17th. I still have to get a couple of pictures framed to get ready for that show. The Solano event was fun--I got a chance to try some deep-fried alligator! We spent yesterday in Old Sacramento, which was basically my birthday celebration. We had lunch at a restaurant on the water, and my brother Ed and sister Jan showed up with their spouses. Then Jan and her husband, and I and Mary went to the California Railroad Museum--that was so much fun! It was really great to see my siblings again--I had not seen them in almost a year and a half. Well, I have a few pictures to download and process before the chat tonight. I do hope that Ustream is going to behave itself. Does anyone have any suggestions for other services that we should consider? Between my Internet access and the other services, and broadcasting just keeps becoming more and more of an adventure! Hope to see you all there! |
||
Cheers, VacaDude | ||

Littleguys | UPDATE: (as of
10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back
started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't
show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc,
and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed
with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic
nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with
arthritis.
But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero
Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was
time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica
last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something
no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing
as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where
the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well,
three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much
better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two
years ago??? Not a magic wand, but so much better,

Shari in Memphis | UPDATE!!!
We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list,
so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us,
"Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health
problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern
Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here
in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and
I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild
animals around! I miss you all. Shari (no longer in Memphis) (Shari Sides on FB)" |

A Message From Zorro | StoryTime News | Recipe of the Week |
Hello there, Everbuddy! | ||
It was sure been a busy weekend here, what with the
Dude's birthday coming up tomorrow. All us furry
critters have been planning a gigantic surprise. What it
is, I cannot say. In face, we cannot say. Yes, nobody
knows what the surprise is going to be except for the
one holder of the truth and wisdom, and that is the
Snowy Owl. And he never says anything, so we're all
completely in the dark. We might just sleep through the
day as we usually do...
I have no idea how old the Dude is, but I heard his sister say something about the double nickel. Last time I checked, that equates to a dime. So I guess the Dude is going to be ten years old! It's funny, because if I were to see him out on the street, I would say he doesn't look to be a day under thirty. But then I'm a mouse. Everybody looks older when they are not covered in fur. Well, it is time for me to get ready for the StoryTime this evening--I am finally going to get a chance to read the story from a few weeks ago! And certain Internet providers had better not let me down this time! (Yes, I'm talking to YOU, Comcast!!) See you cats & kittens later! |

A man went to the movie theater. As he sat down to watch the film and his eyes got accustomed to the dark, he noticed a dog sitting on the seat beside him. He was somewhat bemused but decided to try and ignore the dog. As the film progressed he noticed that the dog was reacting appropriately to the scenes. For laughter the dog wagged his tail and barked, For sadness he dropped his ears and whimpered, For violence he growled and bared his teeth. At the end of the film, the audience applauded, and the dog got up on all paws and barked and wagged his tail. The man turned to another who appeared to be the dog's owner and said, "Wow, that was a great film, and what an intelligent dog you have there. Frankly, I'm amazed." "So am I," replied the owner. "He thought the book was terrible." |

DEFALCATION
Pronunciation: \dee-fal-KAY-shun\
noun
Definition of DEFALCATION
1: the act or an instance of embezzling
2: a failure to meet a promise or an expectation
EXAMPLES
"Early in my career, I uncovered a defalcation that resulted from one individual having too
much control over the cash handling process."
— James Williams, quoted in The Washington Business Journal,
30 Jan. 2015
"The sum of $39,400 was borrowed on this line of credit, some of which was
repaid using
District funds. The defendants then conspired to conceal the borrowing to protect their employment
and to conceal their own defalcations and thefts of District funds."
— The Nevada Daily Mail, 25 May 2016
DID YOU KNOW?
"The tea table shall be set forth every morning with its
customary bill of fare, and without any manner of defalcation." No reference to
embezzlement there! This line, from a 1712 issue of Spectator magazine,
is an example of the earliest, and now archaic, sense of defalcation,
which is simply defined as "curtailment." Defalcation is
ultimately from the Latin word falx, meaning "sickle," and it
has been a part of English since the 1400s. It was used early on of monetary
cutbacks (as in "a defalcation in their wages"), and by the 1600s it
was used of most any sort of financial reversal (as in "a defalcation
of public revenues"). Not till the mid-1800s, however, did defalcation
refer to breaches of trust that cause a financial loss, or, specifically, to
embezzlement.
Unscramble the letters to create a synonym of embezzle:
ACETPUEL.
