3 PM PST/6 PM EST |
No Story Writing! We'll write again on August 7. |

No VacaChat Broadcast. (Unless things change) The chatroom will be open at 6:00 PM PST (9:00 PM EST; 8:00 PM CST) |
Channel Links |
The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat.
However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh
without losing both chat and video. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |
Video: http://www.ustream.tv/channel-popup/vacadude |

|
If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
Happy something-something of July! I don't even know what day is
is--it has been so crazy around here. I have had my Internet
access cut off for two consecutive weekends (Comcast outages),
then on Monday my beloved iPod refused to power up, so it's
dead. Then the following day my iPhone refused to connect to the
cellular network. I took it to Sprint late last week and was
told the only way to fix it was to buy a new phone. But then
yesterday I tried a couple of things and now it is working
again. What a relief! I didn't really have the money to go phone
shopping.
I swear, I am just about ready to buy a piece of land and a cabin in Montana and completely drop off the grid. It already seems as though the grid is dropping off me. This week I went to the State Fair and got some nice photos of the Buck Moon (full moon with a funny name) rising over the Midway of the fair. I also went to the water park one day, and that was a lovely way to keep cool! And speaking of the fair, I'm afraid tonight is going to be a no-go for chatting. Today is the last day of the State Fair, and there are some things that Mary really wants to see before it closes. So we are getting ready to head out to Sacramento. One of the things was in a transportation museum they have there--they have a few model railroad pieces and one of them looks remarkably similar to a box car model that Mary's grandfather made for the Southern Pacific Railroad. We have a photograph of him presenting it to his boss--back in 1927. So we are going to go try to talk to the curator there and see if there is any possible way it is the same model. That would be a thrill! Apparently he made this thing over the course of three years and without the benefit of power tools of any kind. He was one of those old-school cabinetmakers. Speaking of cabinetmaking, I found an amazing store last week. It's called Rocklers, and it specializes in woodworking of the cabinet and small scale variety. It is kind of pricey, but they have tools there I did not even know existed! It's the kind of place where if you wanted to build a jewelry box, this is where you would go to find all the little hardware pieces. Plus they have all kinds of exotic woods. Really neat place! (I basically walked in and my jaw fell open. I just wandered up and down the aisles drooling.) Well, I need to get busy and try to get ready to get to the fair. It will be my last day to try a deep-fried Twinkie! I thought I might try, if my phone is working, to try a shout-out on the chat from the State Fair, but it will also depend on whether I can get a signal, or where we are at...but I'll try. We are anticipating, because it is the last day, the place is going to be PACKED today. Packed and hot--it is supposed to get to around 103 degrees. So wish us luck! We'll talk to ya later... |

Cheers, VacaDude | ||

Littleguys | UPDATE: (as of
10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back
started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't
show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc,
and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed
with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic
nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with
arthritis.
But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero
Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was
time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica
last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something
no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing
as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where
the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well,
three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much
better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two
years ago??? Not a magic wand, but so much better,

I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild

A Message From Zorro | StoryTime News | Recipe of the Week |
Hello there, Everbuddy! | ||
Yes, the fair season is starting to wind down at last.
It has been all kinds of fun with yummy/nasty foods,
dizzying rides, mobs of people, interloping
frogs...wait, what am I saying?!? It has been
traumatic!! I may never recover! Well, at least not
until it is time to do it again next year. :)
I've just been struggling to keep up with the Dude, what with his working, camera-fixing, fair-going, water park splashing, cell phone breaking self. Whew! I don't know who ever said that summers were supposed to be relaxing. Yesterday was fun--I got to help him in the kitchen to make some cookies. The Dude and Dudette went to a movie viewing party last night--in celebration of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the premiere of "Star Trek" on TV. They watched the movies "Horatio Hornblower" and "Forbidden Planet" because they were both movies that inspired Gene Roddenberry to come up with the idea for the series. So in honor, we made "Starfleet Cookies." These were the homemade vanilla wafer cookies modified to be shaped like the Starfleet insignias that all the crew of the Enterprise wore. They even had their little service department insignias drawn-in with frosting: you had the command, sciences, and engineering divisions represented. We even made one with the insignia of the Klingon Empire. It seems like you just can't have a plate of Starfleet cookies without at least one Klingon trying to infiltrate! Well, just about time to head to the fair. I'm going to try to get a deep-fried candy bar. Yummy!! |

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.
Crispy Lemon Chicken |
|||
Ingredients: | |||
3 pounds chicken tenderloins |
|
||
Directions: | |||
Mix oil, lemon juice, zest from the lemons, garlic and salt. Add chicken strips. Cover (or place in Ziploc bag) and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or up to 12 hours).
Remove chicken from marinade. Reserve marinade to make a lemon sauce.
Toss the strips in cornstarch and place in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Remove from refrigerator and toss in cornstarch again.
Deep fry in oil or bake.
To bake: Preheat oven to 350°F. Place a baking sheet in the oven with 2 tablespoons oil and 2 tablespoons butter. Heat until butter is melted and oil is very hot. Carefully lay chicken strips in pan and return to oven. Bake for about 10 minutes. Remove pan from oven and turn strips over. Return to oven and continue baking until chicken is done and the breading is crispy.
While chicken is cooking, heat marinade to boiling. Boil for 2 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of the corn starch to ¼ cup water. Stir well and then slowly pour into boiling marinade, whisking the entire time. Heat through until thickened.
Pour over chicken strips or serve on the side as a
dip. |
|||
Lighter Slaw |
|||
Ingredients: | |||
1 bag broccoli slaw 1 onion, chopped 1 stalk celery, finely diced ¼ cup mayonnaise ½ cup unflavored Greek yogurt 1 teaspoon minced garlic ¼ teaspoon celery seed ¼ teaspoon dried dill weed Salt to taste |
|||
Directions: | |||
Chop onion. If desired, cook in microwave for 30 seconds or so to remove
some of the heat, but still retain some of the crunchiness. Combine slaw, onion and celery. Set aside. Combine remaining ingredients and mix with slaw. Chill. |

USUFRUCT
Pronunciation: \YOO-zuh-frukt\
noun
Definition of USUFRUCT
1 : the legal right of using and enjoying the fruits or
profits of something belonging to another
2 : the right to use or enjoy something
EXAMPLES
He has willed all of his property to the conservation society, though
his children will retain the house as a 50-year usufruct.
"When there's no will, the state of Louisiana gives the surviving spouse a
usufruct on the property."
— Mary Anna Evans, Plunder, 2012
DID YOU KNOW?
Thomas Jefferson said, "The earth belongs in usufruct to the living." He apparently understood that when you hold something in usufruct, you gain something of significant value, but only temporarily. The gains granted by usufruct can be clearly seen in the Latin phrase from which the word developed, usus et fructus, which means "use and enjoyment." Latin speakers condensed that phrase to ususfructus, the term English speakers used as the model for our modern word. Usufruct has been used as a noun for the legal right to use something since the mid-1600s. Any right granted by usufruct ends at a specific point, usually the death of the individual who holds it.
