Channel Links |
The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat.
However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh
without losing both chat and video. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
VacaDude here. It has been a bit of an off-week for me here, as
I am currently in the setting-up and review stages of a couple
of work projects, so I am updating some marketing materials and
catching up on some other little home projects. And being rocked
by outside events from time to time.
For one thing, Mary and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary on Friday. The money continues to be pretty tight, so our celebration was pretty low key. Dinner and a movie. And dinner was at IHOP. But the thing is, we REALLY like IHOP. The move we went to see was "The Money Monster," which was pretty frightening. At the end of it I asked my her if she would be okay with the idea of moving to a country whose economy was based on the old barter system. It is really freaky to think about what is happening on Wall Street these days. Another really great movie we have seen recently was "All The Way" on HBO. We watched that last night, and WOW--my head is still spinning over that performance. It stars Bryan Cranston as President Lyndon Johnson. This was based on the play he performed on Broadway. It is like Cranston was born to play that role...he gets completely lost in it. (That role won him the Tony Award for best performance last year.) Then around the middle of last week I got a shock. Back when I was contemplating changing careers from software engineering to illustration/animation, I was taking several design classes through the UC Berkeley extension program. One of the classes I took was one in Computer Animation taught by a man named Stuart Cudlitz. He was then with Colossal Pictures, which was a post-production and visual effects house based in San Francisco. I took the class back around 1993, and a few years later I reached out to Stuart and we traded some e-mails back and forth for a while. Then we both wound up on Facebook, and again traded messages. I would often see postings of his--typically of a very artistic nature. But I hadn't seen any for a while, and I just kind of chalked it up to the usual Facebook glitching. But something caused me to go look at his page this week, and I learned that he had passed away. And that he had done so just over a year ago. So I felt doubly sad. For one, that such a talented man had been taken from this world, and secondly the fact that I had so lost touch with him that I had not learned of it for over a year. Apparently there was a beautiful memorial service that was held in San Francisco for him last fall, and I would have given anything to have been able to attend that. I find that to be one of the problems with telecommuting--I sometimes feel very isolated from my peers and from humanity in general. I'm not sure what to do about it--perhaps I need to seek employment with more studios where I am required to work on the premises. I think it would do me good to have to do that from time to time. But also what learning about that this week has done as been to serve as a reminder as to the finite nature of life. I think back over the past few years and I feel I have not done anything very creative since the outburst of art from the time of the Owl Box. So I am trying to take this experience and use it as a kick in the butt to get me going again on the graphic novel idea I have had languishing for the past eight years. Therefore, I am setting for myself a deadline of June 1st to create the first several panels of the story. Hopefully I will be able to show you guys some cool artwork at the next chat. And speaking of that next chat, that will be on Sunday, June 5th at 6pm PDT. So I hope to see you all there! In the meantime, I need to get busy here because we are getting ready to go to San Francisco tonight for another movie night with friends. Tonight we shall be watching the 1960 production of "Exodus." It should be interesting, because we will probably be the only gentiles in a group consisting mostly of people in the Jewish faith. So it should be a learning experience! Until next time, have a great week, y'all! |

returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes
positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will
probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly. Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue." |

Littleguys | UPDATE: (as of
10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back
started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't
show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc,
and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed
with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic
nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with
arthritis.
But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero
Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was
time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica
last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something
no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing
as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where
the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well,
three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much
better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two
years ago??? Not a magic wand, but so much better,

Shari in Memphis | UPDATE!!!
We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list,
so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us,
"Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health
problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern
Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here
in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and
I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild
animals around! I miss you all. Shari (no longer in Memphis) (Shari Sides on FB)" |

A Message From Zorro | StoryTime News | Recipe of the Week |
Hello there, Everbuddy!
Zorro the Mouse here. I am planning to stay here tonight
while the Dude and Dudette go see their movie. They are
having to take a vegetarian dish for it, so I'll stay
behind and eat all the yummy leftovers.
I had some fun helping the Dude do some photography of rocks this week. He finished his light box and got some great photos of some crystals and other minerals. However, now he wants more light. So we may be coming up with the version 2.0 of the box--this time with even MORE high-intensity LEDs. I think he is hoping to be able to shine a light so bright that it will even penetrate solid steel! Well, maybe not THAT bright. But it is getting pretty bright. I have to say, you see some pretty cool things when you get in that close. We didn't get to make it to the Maker Fair this year, sadly. I always like looking at the 3D printers and Steampunky stuff. But hopefully we can go again next year. Well, the day awaits! And we'll talk to you later!! |

Ketaki sent this in. She says, "I saw it live when it happened and it was so fast. It's too bad she didn't kill it and feed to the owlets. Two overweight middle-aged women are on their daily exercise stroll. They were talking about how hard it is to lose weight as one gets older, something with which all you youths must deal eventually. One woman complained that she remained an 'apple-shape' and the other said that no matter how much she exercised, there was too much poundage on her backside and thighs. It almost seemed like it was there to stay. Her buddy agreed, saying, "It's true. The lard works in mysterious ways."
A woman went to the doctor's office
where she was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes
in the examination room, she burst out, screaming as she ran down the
hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told Him her story. After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room. The older doctor marched down the hallway to the back where the first doctor was and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 68 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?!" The new doctor continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said, "Does she still have the hiccups?" |

QUINCUNX
Pronunciation: \KWIN-kunks\
noun
Definition of QUINCUNX
an arrangement of five things in a square or rectangle with one at each corner and one in the middle
EXAMPLES
The sculptures in the square were arranged in a quincunx with the outer ones
marking the perimeter and the middle one serving as
the centerpiece.
"The towers of Angkor Wat—shaped in a quincunx, five points in a cross—were
named after
Mount Meru, the home of the gods believed in Indian myth to lie at the center of the world."
— William Dalrymple, The New York Review of Books, 21 May
2015
DID YOU KNOW?
In ancient Rome, a quincunx was a coin with a weight equal to five twelfths of a libra,
a unit of weight similar to our pound. The coin's name comes from the Latin roots quinque,
meaning "five," and uncia, meaning "one twelfth." The ancients used a pattern of five dots arranged
like the pips on a die as a symbol for the coin, and English speakers applied the word to
arrangements similar to that distinctive five-dot mark.
