Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Our Furred, Feathered, and Scaled Babies
We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

Sad News from Alessondra's OKC Great Horned Owl Cam
I received this news in my email this week.

Many of you all know Steve Johnson has served as a temp mod for us in chat, and who is also Managing Editor for our local NBC affiliate, KFOR-TV. Ali Meyer is one of their anchors who has covered the OKC Owl Cam from its inception, with one of her past stories about this project even being picked up by CNN and NBC. Unfortunately, the story that will air tonight (and later be posted here) about the OKC Owl Cam is one of sadness.

There is no easy way to tell you this.

Deziray was recently contacted by a neighbor from a nearby block and asked to come look at what the neighbor thought was an injured owl. When Deziray arrived, she found a familiar owl that was, unfortunately, not injured but deceased.

She carefully wrapped the owl up and brought it home, notifying me of the situation. I came home and we both thought, based on size and markings, that it had to be Mr. Tiger. We reached out to our usual expert advisors, both of whom suspected secondary poisoning by ingesting a rodent who’d eaten rodenticide.

That evening, we shared the news with Alessondra. She was devastated, as you can imagine. Working on the assumption that he was poisoned, we began discussing ways we could honor him with a campaign to educate fans and the public about the unintentional consequences of using rodenticides. We talked about all of the potential good things that could come from this and ways we would make sure he didn’t die in vain.

We wanted to know facts, and we believed that the Tigers, Alessondra, and the OKC Owl Community deserved to know what happened. So the next morning, Deziray drove him to Stillwater, where we commissioned a necropsy at the OK State University’s Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.

The following day, Deziray heard from the vet at the lab. The news was not at all what we had expected or hoped. The owl was not male, but female. Her cause of death was not from rodenticide. She was shot. The report states that the necropsy examination reveals acute, focal, severe pleural and pulmonary laceration accompanied by regionally extensive intracoelomic hemorrhage. The character and distribution of the lacerations are suggestive of projectile trauma, although no projectile (bullet) was found.

After receiving the news, as astounding as it was, we went back and compared markings and believe strongly that it was, indeed, Mrs. Tiger. She was too large and too ornate to be a recent owlet, and the necropsy reports this was a mature adult owl. We originally thought it was Mr. Tiger because she seemed smaller than we were used to seeing her…but we usually see her up close when she’s “fattened up” for the long-haul on the nest. Comparing photos, the markings are indeed consistent with Mrs. Tiger’s.

We are as disheartened by this as I’m sure you are. Who could do this to an owl, let alone one that is perhaps among the most well-known owls in the world?

That’s a question Deziray and I have asked ourselves a lot over the past several days. Was it an adult who was tired of the hooting? A careless kid who didn’t know the seriousness of his actions? While we’ve determined it our duty to report it, it is not our burden to prove who did it, nor within our power to take it much further on our own.

I have been in contact with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and have spoken at length with the Game Warden who oversees Oklahoma County. I have shared with him all of the details and evidence, of which we have a considerable amount, along with the OADL’s necropsy report. We hope that information, combined with the interest generated by KFOR’s story, will ensure Mrs. T does not leave us in vain.

In the meantime, we mourn the loss of Mrs. Tiger and await her to be returned to us when she will be provided a peaceful and ceremonial place in Alessondra's play yard, where she will rest in the love of the little girl who discovered her and helped share her story. Where she will remain in the territory of her mate, Mr. Tiger, who continues to appear on rooftops nearby at dawn and dusk to this day. And while it was not as picturesque as perhaps she fantasized, Alessondra can at least say that she has finally been able to hold and pet the owl whose soulful connection she has enjoyed over the past several years of her childhood.

We want you, our closest friends and followers in this experience, to know how sorry we are to bring you this news. We mourn with you and will keep you updated as we know more.

The story that airs tonight will eventually be posted/shared here, but you can tune into the live stream at 6PM CST by going to kfor.com/live

With love,
Jeff, Deziray, & Alessondra

  Hello Vriends,
Greetings to you from Vacaville, where we are enjoying a sunny autumn day. There is a certain chill in the air, the leaves are falling (and making an absolute mess of my yard), and the wafting scent of pumpkin spice drifts on the air. Or is that Old Spice? Anyway...
Yesterday I went to my photo club's workshop for developing B&W film. During the workshop, we developed the film that we shot up last weekend at the Western Railway Museum. My roll came out fairly well, though I have not yet had a chance to scan the negatives in to get a full look at the pictures. The lady who hosted the workshop definitely opened my eyes to a few new concepts. Most of what I knew about film developing is based on what I learned back when I did it in junior high school. So I wasn't sure how much I would get out of this workshop, but I had a few pleasant surprises. It all just makes me anxious to get out there and shoot some more film!

Oh, I did receive some good news on the photography front: I had submitted one of my photos of burrowing owls to the contest hosted by WildCare, and I found out this week that it was selected as a finalist! They have one award that is chosen by popular vote, so if you get a chance to, I would be most appreciative of any vote you could send my way. The site to vote on is http://www.wildcarebayarea.org/support-us/2016-peoples-choice-voting/. Just click on the link where it says to vote. (My entry is entitled "Burrowing Owls") You can only vote one time, and you have until October 31st to do so.

This week we were reminded once again as to the folly of man. We were humbled in our technological endeavors. Yes, I am referring to the ESA space agency's attempted landing on Mars by their Schiaparelli probe. If you were not aware of what happened, it had been sending signals to Earth as it entered its final descent, but just about the time it was supposed to have landed, contact was lost. Many hoped that the lander had merely come down on some rocks and was perhaps titled at such an angle that the antenna could not "phone home." However, a subsequent pass of the NASA Orbiter showed what looked to be a fresh, new impact crater. It just proves once again--that space is hard.

However, in other news regarding technology working or not working, I am pleased to announce that I am once again printing with my 3D printer. It is not perfect, but it is enough that I can keep going with some of my projects. I had experienced a cascade of problems, and then got into heating issues when I tried to switch over to printing ABS plastic (I had been printing PLA before, which does not require as high a heat when printing). So I find that I can still print PLA, and in the meantime I will be working with the manufacturer to try to get to the bottom of the heater's problem. But it is great to be able to finally make some progress again.

Last Thursday I did get a bit of a scare. In case you hadn't known, I have been dieting for a bit over a year now (at my doctor's behest). I dropped about 20 pounds within a few months, but then stalled and could not seem to drop any more. Then I had lunch with my siblings around my birthday, and they gave me a lot of advice about reducing carbohydrate intake. You see, I have always been a bread, rice, and pasta junkie. So I started substituting tofu for rice and pasta, and making some other changes so as to not completely cut carbs out, but greatly reduce them. And it worked--I dropped about another 20 pounds, and I managed to get down to a weight I had not seen since the early 1990s! That's the good part. However, it looks like I may have been a little too aggressive with my approach, and Thursday I got hit with some really nasty dizziness. I had experienced some before, but usually it would pass within a few minutes. This time it was several hours before I got back to normal--and that wasn't 100% normal.

In working with my doctor it has been determined that it is probably a case of blood sugar levels getting too low. My intakes are so reduced that I am hitting a late-afternoon crash cycle. So I have been making some modifications, and the last day or so has seen some improvement. I'm getting back into some weight territory that I haven't been in before, so I'm having to relearn some things.

Well, that is about it for news from the CasaVaca. As we head into the end of the month, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Halloween!!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes63 An update from Jes (as of 10/09/2006)  Since Ustream has cut me out of chat, I thought my friends might want to know what I have done in the last two months.
I had my roof replaced. While they were to do it, I took off to visit an old friend I have had since 1956. She lives in Yeovil England now. A village of 900 with no store, etc. Have to go to the larger village for gas, etc. I stayed in a wonderful small hotel with a garden room called The Hollies. Next village over. Had colts (horses) outside my garden and the pub was 3 star for food. Weather beyond perfect each day and it was lovely to see green lawns again!! Lovely flowers in the National Trust Estates we toured. Went to Bath on the train, drove to Wells Cathedral one day. Just really messed around and met her friends.

Lovely relaxing until I returned home to find out they had NOT started my roof so I had to live thru the nailing. Plus no hot water, heat wave going on with the house all closed up and a flat tire while running errands.

I was ready to fly back even dealing with the 11 hour flight, the coach, and the 2 hr. train ride to her village. Not easy to reach Tintinhull. Try googling Tintinhull Yeovil UK. In the middle of nowhere!

Currently I had planned to go to Hilton Head Island to visit old friends, then up to DC to visit some friends I have not seen in over 45 ys. next week.

Hurricane Matthew messed up that trip. They still do not know what condition their home has been left in after the surge.

I am also dating some one I have known for 50 years.....at least I have as smile on my face now after breaking up with the boyfriend of 42 years!

So I have been busy but unable to chat with all my old friends on Vacachat. I did lurk until Ustream took that away too! Now I can just watch Vaca speak but no chatting on the side. Guess you have to sign in to just read the chat and not lurk.

Lots of other small stuff has happened too. My life is busy and flying by suddenly. I have no idea where time goes anymore.

I miss everyone in the chat room and I wish some of the ones from a couple of years would return. Elsa asks about us but she doesn't join anymore.

We need a new location so we can post the word and get returning chatters that we miss!

  Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Wow, things sure got a little tense around here this week! When the Dude was getting dizzy, the Dudette became convinced that he was losing too much weight too quickly, so she went out and bought some foods that she thought might be making him sick through their absence. But since nobody really knew for sure what exactly might be the culprit, she ended up getting lots of yummy goodies that hadn't been in the house much lately. So I've really enjoyed that aspect of the week. Especially the piece of German chocolate cake with creamy pecan/coconut frosting! Of course, the irony is that right after the Dude ate some of that, his head cleared right up! He didn't eat all of it, though--so I was more than happy to help finish that off!

Once they start to narrow-down the foods that might need to get added back into the diet, the yummy stuff will likely go away again--so I'm going to enjoy it while I've got it! :)

It's nice to have the 3D printer working again. It makes a nice buzz buzz zip zip music as it cranks out all kinds of little doo-dads. It was entirely too quiet around here the last couple of weeks!

Well, it is time to get back to work. Lots of Sunday chores to do! Until next week...

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

Three Sisters Stew

An autumn harvest stew similar to a traditional Native American Dish of the 18th Century and earlier

  Ingredients:

½ pound dried hominy or Iroquois white corn*
2 cups dried beans (pinto, great northern, etc.)
1½ cups cubed beef or pork**
2 onions, diced
4 tablespoons butter
1½-2 quarts beef, chicken or vegetable broth or stock
2 cups diced carrots

5-6 ribs of celery, diced
2 cups peeled and diced sweet potato
2 cups diced rutabaga or turnips (optional)***
1 butternut or acorn squash, peeled and diced
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Place hominy and beans in very hot water and soak for 3 hours. Drain well.

Brown meat in butter. (Do not cook until done.) Add onions and sauté until onions are tender.

Place beef and onions in a large stock pot. Add broth and drained hominy and beans. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 3 hours, or until hominy and beans are fully tender.

Stir in diced vegetables and continue to simmer until vegetables are tender. Season to taste.

*If dried hominy is not available (we get ours here: http://www.iroquoiswhitecorn.org/shop#!/Iroquois-Hulled-White-Corn/p/46220353/category=11951234) canned hominy may be substituted. Drain hominy well and add after squash and other vegetables are tender.

**Any meat will work. For Native Americans and settlers in the 18th century, bear meat or venison would have been common.

***Any autumn, firm, hard vegetable can be used.

Mother Owl Takes On Snake—and Wins
Ketaki sent this in. She says, "I saw it live when it happened and it was so fast. It's too bad she didn't kill it and feed to the owlets. They could have used the food, and the snake, a rat snake, is non-venomous. But she was intent on protection. They run it in slow motion at the end so you can see her, and the inset window shows the snake coming down from the top."

JACQUERIE

Pronunciation:  \bil-du̇ŋ(k)s-rō-ˌmän, -du̇ŋz-\

noun

Definition of JACQUERIE

(often capitalized Jacquerie) a peasants' revolt

EXAMPLES

"There were no bloodthirsty sansculottes preparing to erect guillotines; nor were farmers, however angry

about government excise taxes and other matters—as Shays's Rebellion suggested—ready to burn down the

manorial estates of their feudal overlords in some version of an American jacquerie."

— Steve Fraser, Wall Street: America's Dream Palace, 2008

"The thicker the masonry, the more likely the fortress would withstand the anticipated Jacquerie."

— Michael Knox Beran, National Review, 7 Sept. 2009

DID YOU KNOW?

The first jacquerie was an insurrection of peasants against the nobility in northeastern France in 1358, so-named from the nobles' habit of referring contemptuously to any peasant as "Jacques," or "Jacques Bonhomme" (in French bonhomme means "fellow"). It took some time—150 years—for the name of the first jacquerie to become a generalized term for other revolts. The term is also occasionally used to refer to the peasant class, as when Madame Defarge in Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities tells her husband to "consider the faces of all the world that we know, consider the rage and discontent to which the Jacquerie addresses itself with more and more of certainty every hour."
