Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Our Furred, Feathered, and Scaled Babies
We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Happy post-Independence Day, volks! I hope everyone had a safe and sane 4th, and hopefully all the little furbabies made it past the din of all the rapid expansions of gas in the form of various exploding shells and such.

We went to Calistoga for the 4th, to the Napa County Fair. I was pleased to see upon my arrival to the photography exhibit that I had added four more ribbons to my haul for this year--one 3rd place, one 2nd place, and two 1st place ribbons. How appropriate--that's a red, a white, and some blue ribbons! Then we stayed around and rode some rides, ate some food that we thought would be gucky fair food--but turned out to be gourmet treats (what can I say--it's Napa!) Attended a cooking demonstration where they had us tasting the absolute best olive oil we've ever tasted. So good that when I had to drive back to Calistoga the following day to pick up my winnings and photos, I stopped off at the store selling this amazing oil and bought four bottles.

Then the evening was capped off by one of the best fireworks displays I had ever seen. I'm used to going "oooooh," and "ahhhh" at fireworks shows, but there were several times I went "OMG"--or was just left speechless. I had heard from some people that the Napa show was spectacular, and I have to say I believe it now. I think we may have a new yearly tradition for the 4th--especially if I can get some entries in for next year's photo show!

And speaking of fairs, the California State Fair opened on Friday. We haven't had a chance to go yet, but we are planning a trip for tomorrow. We're working through the weekend so that we can skip out on Monday. The weather has been unusually cool these last two days, so it would have been a great time to go. (The Cal State Fair is known for being scorching hot--that's one of the reasons Mary and I have never been to that fair.) Tomorrow it is supposed to get to 91 or so, so that's worse than the last couple of days, but nowhere near the low hundreds that it tends to get to. We're really looking forward to this--we have been watching it on the news and there just seems to be so much neat stuff to see!

Then just yesterday I finished framing some pieces and delivering them to the Solano County Fair, which starts just a few days after the State Fair ends. We've never been to that fair either. Then in August is the Yolo County Fair--never been there either. Basically, I hadn't been to a county fair since I was a teenager. I used to go to the Yuba/Sutter fair in Marysville. I even showed some projects there from my 4-H days. Then one time in the 80s I went to a county fair in Paso Robles, CA--but I don't really count that as going to the fair because we didn't ride anything, eat any food, or try to win any stuffed animals--we were just there to see Huey Lewis and the News! So I count that more as a concert experience. So this year is my year for the fairs!

I hope you guys can make it to the StoryTime writing session this afternoon, and then to the chat in the evening. I'm going to introduce our new family member--Freddy the Fair Frog! I won him in the water squirt-gun game on the midway at the Napa Fair. He is very cute, and now we are looking to take him to the State Fair and others and get our family photos taken with him. :)

Well, speaking of the chat tonight, I need to sign off and get busy. I'm going over to a friend's house today to try to set up the Raspberry Pi on an electronics project I'm working on with him. He's got an old Philco radio console, and we're hooking it up with a video display and blinking lights and sound system--it should be pretty cool after we're finished!

Until then, see y'all later!
Cheers, VacaDude

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Well, it looks like I have some competition around here! The Dude and Dudette came home from the Napa Fair with an interloper--this fella named Freddy the Fair Frog. Well, he had better not horn in on my share of the corn dogs, I can tell you that! I mean, he's a nice guy and all (albeit a little cold-blooded)--but I had better get my shot at the State Fair as well! I may just have to go on my own. Well, maybe we can all get a big family photo. He's not such a bad guy, I guess. Oh heck, actually he's downright adorable!!

I guess my biggest complaint about him (aside from the fact he smells of algae), is that he appears to have not steered clear of many of the food vendors at the fair. This guy is HUGE! He looks like a big, green, fuzzy bowling ball. Things were already a tad cramped in the puppet apartment (aka drawer), but once he moved in, we're all squished to the edge. I think the Dude might need to make a special pond for him in the backyard. Or maybe since he's a fair frog, it can be a dunk tank! In fact, I've got a pretty good throwing arm--hee hee!

Well, I need to have time to get ready for the show tonight. So I'll catch all y'all later!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

From the Dude

Here are the photos I mentioned in the Notez.

First is the Rainbow Swoosh, a light painting.

Next, is an extreme close-up of a red agate.

And this is the 3D model of the Juno lander.

Now you can see why!

Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

It listens to its motherboard!

Little Billy's mom was rubbing moisturizing cream on her face as Billy walked in.

"Mommy, what are you doing?" he asked.

"I'm putting cold cream on my face," she replied.

"Why, Mommy?" Billy asked.

"To make my skin look beautiful," she said.

When she started wiping the cold cream off her face with a kleenex, Billy said, "Gosh, Mom, you're giving up already?"

A blind man was describing his favorite sport, parachuting. When asked how this was accomplished, he said that things were all done for him: "I am placed in the door and told when to jump. My hand is placed on my release ring for me, and out I go."

"But how do you know when you are going to land?" he was asked.

"I have a very keen sense of smell and I can smell the trees and grass when I am 300 feet from the ground" he answered.

"But how do you know when to lift your legs for the final arrival on the ground?" he was again asked.

The man quickly answered. "Oh, the dog's leash goes slack."

SEMELPAROUS

Pronunciation:  \seh-MEL-puh-rus\

adjective

Definition of SEMELPAROUS

reproducing or breeding only once in a lifetime

EXAMPLES

The article's author is a scientist who spent years studying semelparous butterflies.

"[The century plant's] common name derives from its semelparous nature of flowering

only once at the end of its long life."

— Fred Whitley, The St. Augustine (Florida) Record, 3 Oct. 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

The combining form -parous was first used in English by the 17th-century physician and writer Sir Thomas Browne, who wrote about organisms that were multiparous ("producing more than one at a birth"), oviparous ("producing eggs that develop outside the maternal body"), and viviparous ("producing living young instead of eggs from within the body"). The suffix is based on the Latin verb parere, meaning "to give birth to," which is also a relative of the word that gave us parent. Semelparous, the youngest offspring of -parous, was born in 1954. Its other parent is semel, the Latin word for "once."
