Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Well, I hope everybody is out having fun on this 4th of July weekend. And I hope not too many people were hoping to tune in and watch a VacaChat tonight, because I'm having to push that out a week.

I had thought that I might be super busy on weekends once the California State Fair got started. But actually, it looks like mid July might not be so bad, but I have so many things I need to get ready for this upcoming week--that I am really having to kick things into overdrive!! I have charts and schedules and milestone lists tacked-up all over my office.

Monday we are going to the Napa County Fair in Calistoga, so it will be at that time that I will find out if I managed to capture any more ribbons. We are looking forward to a good old fashioned county fair and a big fireworks show at the end of it. I think it is going to be a lot of fun! Then on Tuesday I have to drive back to Calistoga and pick up any photos that did not sell. Then on Friday or Saturday I have to deliver all of the entries to the Solano County Fairgrounds for that contest (and of course I will have to make up a new photo/frame package for any photos that might have sold at the Napa fair). However, I have another thing that I have to prepare by the end of the week to deliver to Solano--I entered an illustration that is not even done yet! I am entering a tableaux image from my graphic novel into the fine arts--computer assisted art category. I figured this would be a good deadline and incentive to kick the graphic novel project in the butt. I have had this thing knocking around in the back of my brain for almost nine years...I am determined to either do something with it, or else purge it from my mind. And I hate living with regret, so I'm trying to make a go of it.

Of course the end result is that I have heaped yet another big dollop of work for myself onto my plate. This in addition to a couple of work projects, plus some ideas that have been fighting to get to the front of my brain. You see, the inventive gene has been going crazy lately. It started with my creating the light painting images for the State Fair, and having such success with them (one blue and one 4th place ribbon). So I have been messing around with the light painting again, and now I am starting to make plans to create version 2.0 of my light brush. There are so many changes I want to make--based on my recent experiences with the technique. I want better ergonomics, more bells and whistles, and lots more patterns to choose from! One of my most recent sessions used a special rainbow filter, and I thought the results were pleasant (I'm sending one example from that for the newsletter).

Another area of photography I have been experimenting with has been macrophotography. In particular, I love seeing rocks and minerals up very close and under extreme magnification. There is an entire world contained in the very small, and I want to get pictures of it. Again, I'm including a recent photo I took of a red agate.

Yet another project that has been competing for my time has been a camera restoration project. I recently got an old camera from one of the MODs, but it is currently not functional. So I am dabbling in the area of camera repair. I'm trying to take it slow and attempt it myself, because the quotes I got for sending it to a good repair facility comes to well over a thousand dollars! This is a very old camera, but one that is still collected and used to this day. So some parts are no longer made for it, and the number of repair personnel has been dwindling over the years. So who knows--I may just become one of those people.

Another thing I have been keeping track of, and which has been keeping me looking up--and that is the Juno space probe. This is the orbiter that is due to insert itself into orbit around Jupiter starting tomorrow--July 4th! This brings to mind a previous endeavor when NASA timed a big space mission on the 4th of July, and that was the first Viking landing on the surface of Mars on July 4, 1976 (our nation's bicentennial). I still get goosebumps when I remember being a teenager and waiting for those first few images from the Martian surface. Oh, those were the days!

So in anticipation of this event coming up with Juno, I spent some time last week creating a 3D model of the Juno craft, and I just put the finishing touches on it this morning. I'm sending one of the first renders from that along for the newsletter too! It's an exciting time to be alive, and for me--it is a busy time as well! And I look forward to being able to tell you all about it next weekend on the VacaChat. I'll let you know how things went in Napa, as well! Until then...
Cheers, VacaDude

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

  Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. Oh, things have been hopping around here, all right! We have county and state fairs coming up, and I've been saving up my allowance so I can buy all kinds of yummy things to eat there. But what's more, the Dude has been putting his thinkong cap on lately, and has all kinds of new ideas for contraptions and prototypes of inventions...I am going to ask him if I can get a labcoat to wear around here. And maybe I'll change my name to Igor! Seriously though, I do enjoy getting a chance to be a lab assistant. I have some cousins who call themselves "lab rats" but it is not the same. I like being a "Maker Mouse!"

I'll have to see if I get to ride any more roller coasters or anything. I would love to go to the waterpark to cool off sometime, but I think I might cause a bit of pandemonium if I suddenly found myself swimming in the pool next to a group of ladies. I'd bee cool with it, but they usually have something to say about it. Before you know it, you got the whole Three Blind Mice scenario playing-out, and I'd just as soon skip that. I'll stick to the land-based rides!

Speaking of which, tomorrow is the day--and lots to do before then. So we'll see you guys later!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Firecracker Cake

  Ingredients:

1 white cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and egg whites

called for on cake mix box
Red food color
Blue food color
1 container white frosting

  Directions:

Heat oven to 325°F. Generously grease 12-cup fluted tube cake pan. Make cake batter as directed on box, using water, oil and egg whites. Pour 1 cup of the batter into small bowl; stir in red food color until well mixed. Pour another cup of the batter into separate bowl; stir in blue food color until well mixed.

Pour red cake batter into bottom of pan. Carefully pour remaining white batter over red batter in pan. Carefully pour blue batter over white batter. (Blue batter does not need to cover white batter completely; it looks better if it just forms a ring in the center of the white batter.)

When you add the batter to the pan, do not mix with a spoon. Just pour it in so the colors don’t mix but rather, just rest on top of each other in the pan.

Bake as directed on box or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool cake 5 minutes. Meanwhile, place cooling rack over cookie sheet. Turn pan upside down onto cooling rack. Cool cake completely, about 30 minutes.

When cake is cool, divide frosting evenly into 3 microwavable bowls. Microwave 1 bowl of frosting uncovered on High a few seconds until smooth enough to drizzle over cake. With spoon, drizzle all of white frosting back and forth around cake in a striping pattern.

Repeat microwaving second bowl of frosting until smooth. Stir in a few drops blue food color until well blended. Drizzle over cake, scattering frosting back and forth.

Repeat with remaining bowl of frosting and red food color, making sure red, white and blue frostings can be seen on cake.

Let cake stand at room temperature until frosting is set before serving.

Store loosely covered at room temperature.

Grilled Peanut Butter Chicken

  Ingredients:

2½ lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts or 2½ lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs
1 cup creamy peanut butter
¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
¼ cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
½-1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2 teaspoons fresh grated gingerroot
¼ cup sliced green onion, optional for garnish (optional)

  Directions:
Place chicken in a plastic Ziplock bag or a glass pan.

In a bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, soy sauce, lemon juice, vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, red pepper flakes and ginger. Pour this marinade over chicken.

Chill and allow the chicken to marinate for 6 - 8 hours, or up to 24 hours.

Lightly oil grill.

Grill marinated chicken (discarding marinade) for 6-8 minutes per side or until done.

Serve sprinkled with chopped green onions, if desired.

Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

Why did the A go to the bathroom and come out as an E?
Because he had a vowel movement.

Why did the boy put candy under his pillow?
Because he wanted sweet dreams.

Why was the sick man arrested in his car?

  What's the best parting gift?
A comb.

A weeping woman bursts into her hypnotherapist's office and declares, "Doctor, I have been faithful to my husband for 15 years, but yesterday I broke that trust and had an affair! The guilt is killing me. I just want to forget that it ever happened!"

The hypnotherapist shakes his head and says. "Not again…

Moses was sitting in the Egyptian ghetto. Things were terrible. Pharaoh wouldn't even speak to him. The rest of the Israelites were mad at him and making the overseers even more irritable than usual, etc. He was about ready to give up.

Suddenly a booming, sonorous voice spoke from above: "You, Moses, heed me ! I have good news, and bad news."

Moses was staggered.

The voice continued: "You, Moses, will lead the People of Israel from bondage. If Pharaoh refuses to release your bonds, I will smite Egypt with a rain of frogs."

"You, Moses, will lead the People of Israel to the Promised Land. If Pharaoh blocks your way, I will smite Egypt with a plague of Locust."

"You, Moses, will lead the People of Israel to freedom and safety. If Pharaoh's army pursues you, I will part the waters of the Red Sea to open your path to the Promised Land."

Moses was stunned. He stammered, "That's...that's fantastic. I can't believe it! But what's the bad news?"

"You, Moses, must write the Environmental Impact Statement."

HELIOLATRY

Pronunciation:  \hee-lee-AH-luh-tree\

noun

Definition of HELIOLATRY

sun worship

EXAMPLES

Archeologists believe that the members of the ancient civilization practiced

heliolatry because each temple faced east, toward the rising sun.

"An observer would assume that all of us—humans and shorebirds alike—are guilty of heliolatry….

We had endured a series of dark, gloomy, winter days, during which the sun had been

continually hidden behind dense, rain clouds. Now that the sun has emerged from its cloudy cave,

the beach is bathed in brilliant sunshine."

— George Thatcher, The Biloxi (Mississippi) Sun Herald, 22 Jan. 2013

DID YOU KNOW?

The first half of heliolatry derives from hēlios, the Greek word for "sun." In Greek mythology,

Hēlios was the god of the sun, imagined as "driving" the sun as a chariot across the sky.

From hēlios we also get the word helium, referring to the very light gas that is used in balloons and

airships, and heliocentric, meaning "having or relating to the sun as center," as in "a heliocentric orbit."

The suffix -latry, meaning "worship," derives via Late Latin and French from the Greek latreia, and can

be found in such words as bardolatry ("worship of Shakespeare") and zoolatry ("animal worship").

A person who worships the sun is called a heliolater.
