Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  A Note From the Dude
A Note from the Dude    Chatter News    Prayer
Requests
  Vaca Blog

  Hello Vriends,
Sorry to be so late with the notes today. I've been doing all kinds of work projects and also some design/tinkering projects. The weekend has slipped away on me!

Yesterday was the 8th anniversary BBQ for our photography club. (I've been a part of the club for a little over two years.) It was a fun day yesterday, hanging out in a back yard, eating yummy foods, and talking about all kinds of things--but mostly photography! (We did get into an animated debate towards the end of the evening on the subject of guns in America. But at least it remained a debate, and everybody was mostly civil. I'd much rather people be able to talk about the matter rationally than the stonewalling that is such a large problem in our polarized country today.)

I wrote an article about the photo club and it is due to show up in the upcoming Vacaville magazine that comes out monthly. I was honored to be asked to write it, and I am kind of proud the way it came out.

Speaking of accolades, a video that I did the graphics for last year has won a trophy for an "award of distinction" from the Communicator Award folks. This is an awards organization that recognizes excellence in the communications arts, of which video is a part. So that was a pleasant surprise!

As far as the photography goes, and the county fairs--my next show will be the Napa County fair in Calistoga, which will be on July 4th. Mary and I are going to that show to be at the fair and to enjoy the fireworks. I guess I do not find out anything about possible awards until the day of the event. (Though they are having an awards gala a couple of days before, where they will be handing out the Best in Show awards. So perhaps some disclosures will take place then.) Then the 5th of July I have to go back to Calistoga to pick up the photos, and then I take them to the Solano County fairgrounds on the 8th. The 8th is also the day the California State Fair begins. I also just entered six photos into the Yolo County fair, but that one is in August, so I don't have to deliver photos until after the State and Solano fairs are done.

Yolo is apparently the oldest continually-running fair in the state of California. Also, it is just about the final county fair of the summer season, so that will do it for me for 2016. But then I will need to get out there and start taking more pictures--for 2017!

So next week I am planning to do a VacaChat--on the 3rd of July. I know there may be some people traveling, but hopefully they can catch the recording. With all these fairs, I'm afraid most of my weekends are going to be tied-up in July. So please stop on by if you are around, and we'll have some silly fun!

Until then, have a great week, y'all!
Cheers, VacaDude

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

  Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro here. We are just one more week away from StoryTime! And one week and a day away from the 4th of July and yummy corn dogs. Mmmmmmm.

I think I was born for county fairs. Or maybe it is the circus I am thinking of. I am really good at death-defying stunts and escapes. Besides, with all those food vendors at a fair, it is amazingly good hunting for the likes of me and my kind. All I have to do is run across the midway from one food vendor to another, and people have a tendency to drop their plates of food and run screaming! It doesn't take long before I have completely had my fill of food. And seeing as most of it ends up being deep-fried in something, it doesn't take long before I am completely over my allocation of daily calories, too!

Oh well--I'll have all winter to diet. :)

Well, time to get goink. I'll see all you crazy kidz next week!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Red, White and Blue Fudge

  Ingredients:

6 cups white chocolate chips, divided
2 cans sweetened condensed milk, divided
½ teaspoon cherry extract
½ teaspoon raspberry extract
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
20-30 drops red food coloring (see note)
10-15 drops blue food coloring
Red, white and blue sprinkles

  Directions:

Line an 9x13-inch pan with aluminum foil.

Pour ⅔ cup sweetened condensed milk into bowl. Add cherry extract and stir well.

Pour ⅔ cup sweetened condensed milk into another bowl. Add raspberry extract and stir well.

Pour ⅔ cup sweetened condensed into a third bowl. Add vanilla extract and stir well

Divide the white chocolate chips into the three bowls.

Microwave the cherry bowl in 15-20 second intervals, stirring very well after each interval. Be careful not to over-heat. Once melted, add the red food coloring. Once combined, pour into the prepared pan and spread out evenly. Put it in the refrigerator.

Repeat the process with the vanilla bowl, though this time do not add any food coloring. Pour the white layer over the red layer.

Repeat the process a third and final time, though this time add the blue food coloring. Very carefully spread over the white layer. Add the sprinkles on top immediately after spreading and press into the top of the fudge.

Let cool completely. Remove from the pan and peel off aluminum foil. Cut into squares and serve or store in an airtight container for up to two weeks, unrefrigerated.

Wilted Lettuce Salad

Known by some as "Dutch Lettuce Salad"
  Ingredients:

3 heads leaf lettuce, washed, dried and torn coarsely into pieces
1 pound bacon, cut into ½-inch pieces
2 large onions, chopped
8-10 green onions, chopped
½ cup water
½ cup vinegar
6 tablespoons sugar
Pepper to taste

  Directions:
  Place lettuce in heatproof bowls.

In a large skillet, fry bacon until half cooked.

Add onion and continue to fry bacon until crisp but not burned.

Add water, vinegar and sugar, and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

Pour hot vinaigrette over lettuce. Add pepper to taste and toss.

Serve immediately.

From the Dude

Here's a couple of photos I took this last week.

One I took as I walked around in San Francisco last week,

and another is from a news story--somebody vandalized

one of the signs to have it say "Superb Owl"

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

I have often heard “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
Now you can see why!

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

I recently got crushed by a pile of books, but I suppose I've only got my shelf to blame.

What's the difference between a poorly dressed man on a tricycle and a well dressed man on a bicycle?
Attire.

I went to a really emotional wedding the other day. Even the cake was in tiers.

Why did the cow jump over the moon?
Because the farmer had cold hands.

A young man comes home and says, "Dad, I just got my driver's license and would like to use the family car."

Father replies, "Okay, son. But, first, you have to get good grades in school, keep your room clean, make the yard is neat, and cut your hair. Come back in a few months and then we'll see."

Well, several months pass and the young man comes into the house with his report card in his hand. "Dad, I got great marks on my report card. I've been keeping my room as neat as a pin, and the yard is always ship-shape. How about letting me use the car?"

Father replies, "That's all true, but son you didn't cut your hair."

Son says, "But, dad, Jesus had long hair."

Father replies, "Yes, son, you're perfectly right. And he walked everywhere he went."

One day, Pete complained to his friend, "My head's been really hurting for days. I guess I should see a doctor." His friend said, "Don't do that. There's a computer at the drug store that can diagnose anything quicker and cheaper than a doctor. Simply tell it the problem, put in a sample of your urine, and the computer will diagnose it and tell you what you can do about the issue you're having. It only costs $20.00."

Pete figured he had nothing to lose, so he filled a jar with a urine sample and went to the drug store. Finding the computer, he poured in the sample and deposited the $20.00.

The computer started making some noise and various lights started flashing. After a brief pause, out popped a small slip of paper which read:

You have migraines. You need to take better care of yourself. Get daily rest, drink a lot and avoid bright lights, stress and strain. See me again in 2 weeks.

During the next 2 weeks, while thinking how amazing this new technology was and how it would change medical science forever, he began to wonder if this could be fooled. He decided to give it a try. He mixed together some tap water, a stool sample from his dog, and urine samples from his wife and daughter. To top it off, he even added some oil from his car.

He went back to the drug store, located the computer, poured in the sample and deposited the $20.00, again stating he had a bad headache. He awaited curiously to see what the computer will say about the odd mix. The machine again made the usual noises, flashed lights, and printed out the following analysis:

Your tap water has too much waste in it.

Your dog has ringworms.

Your teenage daughter is anorexic.

Your wife has had 3 minor heart attacks in the past six months.

Also, your car needs a new radiator.

And you wonder why you have a headache?

QUA

Pronunciation:  \KWAH\

preposition

Definition of QUA

1: in the capacity or character of
2: as

EXAMPLES

"Coben's novels have made him rich, but that's not what's important to him.

It's sales qua sales—his statistical record—that motivates Coben,

rather than the money his sales bring in."

— Eric Konigsberg, The Atlantic, July/August 2007

"Sure, there have been other big pop music phenomena over the years …

but the Beatles qua phenomenon was due to a confluence of

forces that defined a historical moment."

— Candy Leonard, The Huffington Post, 18 Dec. 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

Which way? Who? No, we're not paraphrasing lines from the old Abbott and Costello routine

"Who's on First?" We're referring to the etymology of qua, a term that comes to us from Latin.

It can be translated as "which way" or "as," and it is a derivative of the Latin qui,

meaning "who." Qua has been serving English in the capacity of a preposition since the 17th century.

It's a learned but handy little word that led one 20th-century usage writer to comment:

"Qua is sometimes thought affected or pretentious, but it does convey meaning economically."
