Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
I have been walking around the house with a fairly heavy heart over the events that have unfolded in Florida. I first learned of it from VacaSis--she and her husband were just in Orlando, and have been tooling around Florida for the last several days. Very tragic events, and very senseless. There is entirely too much crazy in this world.

This week has been an emotional roller coaster for me. I've been working on two projects for clients who are very precise and perfectionists, and while I can sympathize (as I tend to be that way myself), it was at times very frustrating. One minute I would think I'm almost done, and the next I'd be knocked-back to square one.

Then a MOD had contacted me to tell me she had a box of her father's old camera gear, and asked if I wanted it. If you recall, I had a similar thing happen last year, and as a result I got a functional Ciro-Flex Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) camera, and this has re-ignited a passion in me for photography--especially of the B&W variety. So I drove to pick up the gear, and it turns out that some of the camera gear was a Hasselblad 500C. Hasselblad has always been considered the Cadillac of the camera world. I have always dreamed of owning one, or at least shooting with one. So I was excited by the prospect, but when I picked it up, it was clear that it was not functional. The lens was in two pieces, and the mechanism in the body appeared to be completely frozen.

So for the rest of the week my emotions were up and down because I would do some research online and think "I think I can fix it" but then something would happen and I would go "no, I think I just screwed it up more." A few up and down cycles like that, and then I decided it might be best to take it to a repair shop. Optimism again. Then I got the estimate on the repairs--over a thousand dollars. Basically I was learning that for the cost to repair it, I could buy a used body and lens that were newer and better. So now I sit here with an absolutely gorgeous paperweight. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get it up and running. I have downloaded some copies of old repair manuals, and I am still studying the situation. This may be a restoration project that could take me years. But it is such a gorgeous camera--I would really love to get it up and running again.

And then the other roller coaster involved the California State Fair. The 8th of June was the day that they had said they would announce the selections for the photography contest. I had submitted eight of what I felt to be my strongest photos (based on how well they performed in earlier contests). So I waited eagerly to see if any of mine would be selected to be shown in the fair. The 8th came and went, and there was no word. Finally on the afternoon of the 9th I saw a link to the results. I clicked it and saw a list--and my name was nowhere on it. I was a little crushed. I mean, it was my first time ever trying to enter, and I knew the competition would be fierce, but I was hoping that at least one of mine would make it in. Then if that happened, I was planning to lose my State Fair virginity--I have lived in California all my life and never made it to the State Fair (held every July). So I shrugged...and moped...and said "oh well, I'll try again next year."

Then on the 10th I got a congratulatory e-mail from the fair officials. With my heart in my throat, I dashed off to the results website. I guess what I had seen the day before was a partial list, and that they were not done populating it. I found my name--multiple times, and by the end my jaw was on the floor and my head was in the clouds. The final tally: of my 8 entries, I got one Honorable Mention, two 4th place ribbons, and two 1st Place, Blue Ribbons!! So believe you me, I am heading to the State Fair next month, and going as an award-winning photographer!!!

So I have spent the last several days with my head floating in the clouds. I actually had to go to the website on Saturday morning--just to make sure I hadn't dreamt the whole thing! (But to my relief, my name was still on the winners' list.) So needless to say, I am very excited by this. This year has been amazing for my photography--winning all kinds of ribbons. And this is just the cherry with which to top it all off. I am just really happy with the way things are going in that area of my life! But then the events of Orlando this morning have provided some balance...and a reality check.

And speaking of which, I need to start processing the photos--I need to order some new prints, because I will have some pictures showing at the State Fair at the same time as the Solano County Fair, so I need to order some more! And I have some more matting and framing to do--because I am also going to prepare some shots for the Napa Fair and Fireworks on the 4th of July.

So have a great remainder to your weekend, everyone, and we'll talk with you later!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

  Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro here. I am so glad the Dude got to have some of his peekshures in the State Fair, because that means one thing, baby--we are going to the fair and get to eat more yummy corn dogs!! I cannot wait--I really love corn dogs.

Speaking of which, I believe the Dude is going to try to post the videos from last week on the chat room tonight. So there will be a recording afterward of the three. They are just some silly little clips, but in there you will see me on my first Ferris wheel ride! So look for that in the VacaChat area around 6pm PDT tonight. (And if you miss it, look for it in the recording section.)

It is kind of strange around here these days, as there are camera parts strewn out all over the place. I think the Dude is going for the TinkerMeister award for 2016. I guess he has some cameras he is trying to fix. The other day I heard him get really agitated when he found a bunch of very small hairs inside the camera body. I didn't have the heart to tell him that those were mine. You see, I was walking by late one night, and I was feeling really sleepy, and I came upon this cozy looking cubicle that said "Hasselblad" over the door. I thought maybe that was Swedish for "Mouse Hostel," so I checked-in, took a warm bath, and curled up in some warm blankets and went to sleep. I guess it wasn't a hostel. I guess that also explains why I waited and waited the next morning, but never got served any coffee or bacon.

Oh well, have a great week everbuddy, and we'll see y'all later!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Cheesy Cauliflower Casserole

  Ingredients:

12-16 Roma tomatoes, sliced into ½-inch-thick slices

Olive oil

Salt and pepper to season

2 large onions, quartered and sliced

2 tablespoons butter

2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

2 cups grated Havarti dill cheese

8 ounces cream cheese

1 pound cooked bacon, chopped

1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme

4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

4 tablespoons milk

2 medium zucchini, slice into ¼ thick slices

1 can French fried onions

Aluminum foil

  Directions:

Lay the tomato slices out on the aluminum foil, and drizzle in olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

Roast the seasoned tomato slices in the oven at 450°F (232°C) for 30 minutes.

Place butter and 2 tablespoons oil in a heavy skillet. Heat over medium heat until the oil is shimmering. Add the onion slices and stir to coat the onions with the oil. Spread the onions out evenly over the pan and let cook, stirring occasionally. Let cook for 30 minutes to an hour more, stirring every few minutes. As soon as the onions start sticking to the pan, let them stick a little and brown, but then stir them before they burn. Continue to cook until the onions are a rich, browned color.

Place the caramelized onions in a mixing bowl, adding the sharp cheddar, Havarti and cream cheese.

Add the chopped bacon slices to the mixing bowl, followed by the chopped fresh thyme and chopped fresh parsley.

Add the milk. Mix all the contents of the mixing bowl together until the mixture takes on an even consistency.

Place half of the sliced zucchini in a 9x13-inch oven-proof dish, topped by the roasted tomatoes. Add another layer of zucchini.

Spread the cheese mixture evenly on top of the vegetables.

Sprinkle with French fried onions.

Bake at 425°F (218°C) for 30-40 minutes.

Vidalia Onion Relish

We LOVE this on bratwurst and big fat frankfurters
  Ingredients:

1½ gallons ground Vidalia onions, around 10 pounds

½ cup salt

1 quart vinegar

2 red bell peppers, finely chopped

2 green bell peppers, finely chopped

4½ cups sugar

  Directions:
In a large glass bowl mix together the ground onions and salt and let stand for 30 minutes.

Squeeze out the liquid and discard.

In a large stainless steel or enamel pot add to the onions the vinegar, sugar, and peppers.

Bring to a boil and cook for 30 minutes, stirring often.

Ladle into clean, hot sterile jars leaving ½ inch head space.

Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

Makes 9 pints or 18 half-pints.

From the Dude

Here's a couple of photos I took this last week.

One I took as I walked around in San Francisco last week,

and another is from a news story--somebody vandalized

one of the signs to have it say "Superb Owl"

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

I have often heard “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
Now you can see why!

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

A slug is a snail with a housing problem.

If two's company and three a crowd, what are four and five?
Nine

Johnny's mother was having difficulty gulping down the birthday cake he had made for her as a surprise. When she was finished, Johnny happily exclaimed, "I'm so glad you like it, Mommy. There should have been 32 candles on the cake, but they were all gone when I took it out of the oven."

What did the farmer call the cow that would not give him any milk?
An udder failure!

A nickel, dime and quarter were on the table. The nickel and dime jumped off. Why didn’t the quarter?
It had more cents

Two men who had been shipwrecked for weeks were now starving. One finally said, "Let’s go over to the bacon tree and get some bacon."

The second replied, "Are you an idiot? It’s obviously a trap!"

The first man strode off toward the tree to prove his friend wrong. But he soon came back, his body covered with arrows.

"You were right," he panted. "That was a ham bush."

TOCSIN

Pronunciation:  \TOCK-sin\

noun

Definition of VERDURE

1. an alarm bell or the ringing of it
2. a warning signal

EXAMPLES

A coalition of parents was sounding the tocsin for the school music program—

if voters didn't approve a tax increase, the program was sure to be axed.

"That may sound alarmist, but the tocsin is being rung by some pretty sober people."

— Doyle McManus, Advance-News (Ogdensburg, New York), 16 Feb. 2016

DID YOU KNOW?

Although it has occasionally been spelled like its homonym toxin, tocsin has nothing to do with

poison. Rather, it is derived from the Middle French toquassen, which in turn comes from

the Old Occitan tocasenh, and ultimately from the assumed Vulgar Latin verb toccare ("to ring

a bell") and the Latin signum ("mark, sign"), which have given us, respectively, the English words

touch and signal. Tocsin long referred to the ringing of church bells to signal events of importance

to local villagers, including dangerous events such as attacks. Its use was eventually

broadened to cover anything that signals danger or trouble.
