Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Sunday to you, as today is one of the few weekends in February without a holiday of some sort. I hope you all had a nice Presidents' Day, and Valentine's Day, and all that. Actually, I guess there is less than there used to be--anyone remember back when we used to celebrate Lincoln's Birthday and Washington's Birthday--separately?

Dang--my glasses just broke. That should make this note-writing interesting...

Last weekend for Valentine's day we took a drive to the Sonoma Coast region of California. We had never done that before, and now we have found out why. The traffic getting out there was ridiculous! Apparently this is a very popular tradition with couples. Especially because it was the first clear, warm weekend we had gotten for quite a while. So when we got to Bodega, we saw it was bumper to bumper cars all the way to the coast (about six miles). So we took some back roads and got (eventually) to the town of Jenner, which is about ten miles north of Bodega Bay. Nice town, with some amazing restaurants. Mary and I had some drinks and salads. She had a beet salad that she said was the best she had ever had, and I had a duck confit salad that was amazing. Then we watched a beautiful pink sunset over the Pacific Ocean. It was a truly lovely day!

Then yesterday I did something I had never done before--I made fortune cookies! We were going to a viewing party at the home of our friends Andrew and Jane. Andrew is quite the movie buff, and he has an enormous collection of films on disc. He also has a great big projection screen to watch them on. So there were about a dozen people there last night. Andrew chooses themes for each movie night (he hosts them about once a month), and last night's selections featured San Francisco in the 1930s and 40s. The main feature was "Charlie Chan at Treasure Island." It was set at the 1939 International Expo that was hosted in San Francisco.

So I knew people were going to be bringing snacks, so I got hit with the idea of making fortune cookies! I found a recipe online, and it was pretty simple. Then I found a list of Charlie Chan quotes, including many from the film we were going to see, and made those into my fortunes. Then I made up a bunch of silly ones to go with them. Everybody had a great laugh opening and reading the fortunes aloud. And the cookies were pretty tasty, as well! It was a really fun event.

Well, I need to get going. I have to put the finishing touches on the Time Machine for Zorro's StoryTime tonight. (Presumably I'll put those finishing touches on at some point after I put the starting touches on...)

See you tonight!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. A very happy Sunday to you! It is a nice day here today, and the house still smells like vanilla. We made fortune cookies yesterday, and I helped. Mainly my duties involved the folding of the hot cookies, and quality control (which required that I nibble off a little bit of each cookie. A hard job, I know. But somebuddy's got to do it!)

I'm getting excited about the StoryTime coming up tonight, even if I am a bit skeered. The story is going to involve time travel, which I know is a subject the Dude is really fond of, but then--he's not the one who is going to get whooshed through time! I'm just not sure what to expect. I mean, mice have not actually had it so good throughout history. I mean, today is great--since I have 24/7 access to the refrigerator, got Domino's Pizza on the speed dial (definitely NOT Vermino's), and can watch all kinds of channels on a big Plasma TV. But what if I go back in time and things are not so good? I could get hurt! Not to mention--I have watched the Dude working on this thing...I am a little suspect of the degree of workmanship he is using. I mean, it's looking kinda like cardboard. I wonder if he is going to get OSHA certification before I set foot in the blammed thing! Or at least a UL rating would be nice.

Well, I guess I had better get busy...it is almost TIME to go through TIME!!!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

Cloud Bread

Cloud Bread is a totally gluten-free, low-carb, low-calorie, and low-fat bread alternative. It's a healthier choice that looks like a fluffy cloud and tastes so good!

  Ingredients:
  3 eggs, separated
3 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
1 Tablespoon honey (optional) or 2-3 drops liquid Stevia
¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 300°F. Coat 2 baking sheets with cooking spray.

In a small bowl, mix egg yolks, cream cheese, and sugar until smooth.

In a medium bowl, combine cream of tartar with egg whites; beat with an electric mixer on high speed until fluffy and stiff peaks form. Gently fold egg yolk mixture into egg white mixture until well combined.

Spoon mixture into 10 even rounds on baking sheets.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

The best way to store this low-carb Cloud bread is in an airtight container.

If you'd like your bread a little firmer, allow it to sit overnight.

Cheddar Butter

  Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened
2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon garlic salt

  Directions:
Whip all ingredients together and serve with warm bread or on crackers.

From the Dude

Here's a couple of photos I took this last week.

One I took as I walked around in San Francisco last week,

and another is from a news story--somebody vandalized

one of the signs to have it say "Superb Owl"

Millions of years ago, there was no such thing as the wheel. One day, some primitive guys were watching their wives drag a dead mastodon to the food & fire area. It was exhausting work; the guys were getting tired just watching.

Then they noticed some large, smooth, rounded boulders and they had a great idea! They could sit on top of the boulders and get a better view of their wives working.

This was the first in a series of breakthroughs that ultimately led to television...and later to the remote control. (From Dave Barry)

A big city lawyer was called in on a case between a farmer and a large railroad company.

The farmer noticed that his prize cow was missing from the field through which the railroad passed. He filed suit against the railroad company for the value of the cow.

The case was to be tried before the Justice of the Peace in the back room of the General Store.

The attorney immediately cornered the farmer and tried to get him to settle out of court.

The lawyer did his best selling job, and the farmer finally agreed to take half of what he was claiming to settle the case.

After the farmer signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn't help but gloat a little over his success.

He said to the farmer, "You know, I hate to tell you this but I put one over on you in there. I couldn't have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your farm that morning. I didn't have one witness to put on the stand."

The old farmer replied, "Well, I'll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that durned cow came home this morning!"

Definition of DEASIL

clockwise

EXAMPLES

The worshippers dance around the fire deasil, or sunwise.

"Three times we walked deasil around our central candle. By the third cycle I felt

power flowing from Sky's fingers to mine, from my fingers to Alyce's."

— Cate Tiernan, Spellbound, 2001

DID YOU KNOW?

According to an old custom, you can bring someone good fortune by walking around the person clockwise

three times while carrying a torch or candle. In Scottish Gaelic, the word deiseil is used for the direction

one walks in such a luck-bringing ritual. English speakers modified the spelling to deasil, and have

used the word to describe clockwise motion in a variety of rituals.
