Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Wow, today with a three day weekend combined--it is making for an interesting few days. Mary and I are going to make a drive to the coast--maybe Bodega Bay, and have lunch. We have to scale back, but at least that is something we can do to mark the day. It should be lovely weather for it. It has been rather dry and warm for about the last week, with temperatures reaching into the 70s. We should get a bit more rain next week, but I hope that's not it for the season. We still have a lot of space in the reservoirs that needs replacing.

I took a little hike yesterday morning around sunrise--out at the Lagoon Valley area in Vacaville. I am pleased to report that the lagoon is indeed a lagoon once again. It had completely dried up as of September, but it is filled up now. I got some nice shots with the digital camera, and took several with the B&W as well, but I haven't had a chance to develop those yet.

I went to the doctor on Friday, and although some of my numbers have improved, he was not happy with the way my weight loss has plateaued. It was the holidays. So I need to get those numbers moving back down. Ugh! I guess that's why I am trying to take more hikes and photo safaris. It would help a lot if I could get some more exercise in.

I was just doing some reading of my hometown newspaper--this week marks the 30th anniversary of the Linda flood. It's hard to believe it has been that long. I am also amazed by the fact that the Peachtree Mall is still standing. That place was almost completely underwater, and it has just never recovered.

It happened while I was finishing up on college in Chico (about 60 miles to the north of Linda, which is about five miles north of where I grew up). The winter of 1986 was very wet in northern California, and the rivers were all at flood stage. On February 20 the levee on the Yuba River broke on the south side, sending the water to the south. It inundated the towns of Linda and Olivehurst, and stopped about a half mile short of my parents' house. The Peachtree Mall sat in a bit of a basin located only a few hundred yards from the breach in the levee. The water nearly went over the roof of all the single-story stores. Only the two story JC Pennys was sticking up out of the water.

I had finished school and was working in a video rental store while interviewing with companies. I had a friend working there who was a pilot trainee, so I grabbed a video camera and he flew us down to Linda--where I got an aerial view of the devastation. It was really hard for my brain to process it all. Thousands of homes were submerged--as far as the eye could see. But the mall was the real heartbreaker. I spent SO much time there while I was going to Yuba College in Linda (the college was also hit by the flood). There was a pinball/video arcade in the mall called the "Flipper Flapper Fun Company." I spent many an hour in that place before, after, and between classes. One of the first trophies I ever won was from getting high score on a pinball machine there.

The mall reopened for a while, and a couple of stores have come and gone, as have talk of redevelopment, but not much has been done with it. It is largely abandoned. I have not set foot in it since the flood...I guess I've been afraid to. But who knows--maybe I'll make a drive up there next week, seeing as it is the anniversary and all.

Okay, so maybe that is kind of depressing. Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking a little drive to the coast with my honey today. Always love to take in that salt air!

Have a great week everybody, and hope to see you next week for the chat!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse, here. Wasn't that a fun Super Bowl?!? Well, actually, the game was a tad boring. The commercials were not very funny. And the halftime show--what was up with that?? But oh, the yummies! I went with the Dude and Dudette to their friends' house and we watched it with those folks. The Dude's friend makes a really good tri-tip and ribs. Oh, that was so good. (I guess it's stuff like that behind the reason the Dude's weight loss had stalled. I can tell you, it hasn't been doing much for this mouse, either!) But that was a fun party.

And today is Valentine's Day--here's wishing you a happy happy! To mark the day, I got Zorrina a large box of chocolates. I rounded them all up from the candies the Dude is trying to get rid of. I put them in a heart-shaped box. It is about the size of an SUV. I sure hope she likes it!

So today I guess we are going to the coast--that should be fun! Though I guess that means we will be hiking around the tidepools. I have to be very careful around those--so many crawly things! For some reason, crabs make me very skeered! I think it is the way they like to pinch my tail with those big claws. ::shudder:: Maybe we'll see some starfish!

Well, it is time to get ready to go. Hope to see you all next week for the StoryTime, complete with time travel and everything!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

Salmon with Dill Sauce

  Ingredients:

1 salmon fillet (about 2 pounds)
1-1½ teaspoons lemon-pepper seasoning
1 teaspoon onion salt
1 small onion, sliced and separated into rings
6 lemon slices
¼ cup butter, cubed
DILL SAUCE:
cup sour cream

cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
¾ teaspoon dill weed
¼ teaspoon garlic salt
Pepper to taste

  Directions:
Line a 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan with heavy-duty foil; grease lightly. Place salmon skin side down on foil. Sprinkle with lemon-pepper and onion salt. Top with onion and lemon. Dot with butter. Fold foil around salmon; seal tightly,

Bake at 350° for 20 minutes. Open foil carefully, allowing steam to escape. Broil 4-6 in. from the heat for 8-12 minutes or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.

Combine the sauce ingredients until smooth. Serve with salmon.

Jumbo Brownie Cookies

  Ingredients:

2⅔ cups (16 ounces) 60% cacao bittersweet chocolate baking chips (Ghiardelli recommended)
½ cup unsalted butter, cubed
4 large eggs
1½ cups sugar
4 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 teaspoons instant espresso powder, optional
⅔ cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 package (11½ ounces) semisweet chocolate chunks

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large saucepan, melt chocolate chips and butter over low heat, stirring until smooth. Remove from the heat; cool until mixture is warm.

In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar, vanilla and, if desired, espresso powder until blended. Whisk into chocolate mixture. In another bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and salt; add to chocolate mixture, mixing well. Fold in chocolate chunks; let stand 10 minutes or until mixture thickens slightly.

Drop by ¼-cupfuls 3 in. apart onto parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Bake 12-14 minutes or until set. Cool on pans 1-2 minutes.

From the Dude

Here's a couple of photos I took this last week.

One I took as I walked around in San Francisco last week,

and another is from a news story--somebody vandalized

one of the signs to have it say "Superb Owl"

It’s been a busy birding weekend here. It’s Cornell University’s Great Backyard Bird Count
which we take part in. We are still tallying our feathered friends…These photos were taken last weekend.

Happy Valentine’s Day all!

American Coots taken at Phinizy Swamp in Augusta, GA on Feb 7th

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

Did Adam and Eve ever have a date?
No, but they had an apple.

Why did the banana go out with the prune on Valentine Day?
Because it couldn't get a date.

What did the caveman give his wife on Valentine's Day?
Ughs and kisses!

Four-year-old, Mitch loved candy almost as much as his mom, Ann did. He and Daddy had given her a beautiful heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine's Day. A few days later, Mitch was eyeing it, wishing to have a piece of it. As he reached out to touch one of the big pieces, Ann said to him, "If you touch it, then you have to eat it. Do you understand?" "Oh, yes," he said, nodding his head. Suddenly, his little hand patted the tops of all the pieces of candy. "Now I can eat them all!"

A Virginia farmer was envious of his neighbors who had developed a big business charging admissions to tourists to see their farmhouses by advertising: "George Washington Slept Here." He puzzled a long time how he could cash in on the magic surrounding the first President of the United States. He studied history books and to his delight found that one of the battles against the British redcoats was fought over his land. He reckoned that his cow pasture, which had been handed down from generation to generation, must have been a cow pasture even in 1776, and he further reckoned that Washington must have encountered the same problem then as had happened to him only so short a time ago as yesterday. So he happily erected a sign on the pasture fence next the highway and it bold letters it read, "George Washington Slipped Here."

0ne day the Lone Ranger, while camping with Tonto far from civilization, was overcome with a passion for a drink. He convinced Tonto they needed supplies so together they rode into the nearest town.

While Tonto waited outside, the Lone Ranger went into a local bar for a quick shot.

As the Lone Ranger had just started sipping his drink, Tonto slipped in and said, "Kimo Sabe, we have a problem."

The Lone Ranger asked, "What is it, Tonto?"

Tonto said, "It's Silver. He is all lathered up after that long ride."

After a pause, while the Lone Ranger considered the situation carefully, he said, "Tonto, go back out there and run circles around Silver just as fast as you can. The breeze you stir up will cool Silver."

Tonto quickly slipped out of the bar. A short time later a cowboy entered the bar and asked, "Does that white horse out front belong to anyone here?"

The Lone Ranger said, "That must be my horse, Silver."

The cowboy then said: "You left your Injun running!!"

MARMOREAL

Pronunciation:  \mahr-MOR-ee-ul\

adjective

Definition of MARMOREAL

of, relating to, or suggestive of marble or a marble statue especially in coldness or aloofness

EXAMPLES

"'Thank you for your submission,' the note begins with marmoreal courtesy.

It ends with a wish for success in placing your manuscript with another house."

— William Germano, The Chronicle of Higher Education, 20 Feb. 2011

"Marble … has always been synonymous with artistry and luxury. Had it not been glowing marble

would Michelangelo's David and the Pieta have looked the same? Not to speak of our Taj Mahal,

whose marmoreal splendour has moved many poets to wax eloquent about its beauty."

— Soumitra Das, The Telegraph (India), 1 June 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

Most marble-related words in English were chiseled from the Latin noun marmor, meaning "marble."

Marmor gave our language the word marble itself in the 12th century. It is also the parent of marmoreal,

which has been used in English since the mid-1600s. Marbleize, another marmor descendant,

came later, making its print debut around 1854. The obscure adjective marmorate, meaning

"veined like marble," dates to the 16th century and hasn't seen much use since.
