Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Sunday to you all, and to those of you who are into football, happy Super Bowl Sunday!

Yes, the big game is happening later today, and San Francisco is hosting the whole thing. I hope everything goes well. Last I heard, they were still having problems with the sod on the field--they just can't get anything to work there! Hopefully we won't lose any players to being swallowed by enormous sinkholes.

On Friday I took the afternoon off and went to the Bay Area. I just figured I would take the train from the East Bay into the city, poke my head up at the festivities, take a few pictures, and then head back on the train. Well, I got over there and it was such a zoo. Then I decided I wanted a picture of Alcatraz Island, so I took off walking. Before I knew it, I was all the way down to Pier 39. I had hoped to get a shot of the light of the sunset on the island, but I missed it by around 20 minutes. (Should have taken a streetcar, but I enjoyed getting a chance to hike.) But man, what a party they have been throwing all week! The lighting displays in the financial district were dazzling.

Of course, the irony of it all is that the game is actually being played in Santa Clara, which is about fifty miles to the south of SF. Down there they were all hoping for a big windfall of business from people going to the game, but so far it has just been crickets. I suspect they are probably doing brisk business today, so hopefully it will be enough for them. I used to live down there, so I know there is not as much going on in terms of nightlife and venues--at least when I was there a couple of decades ago.

As for our viewing experience, we are going to be going over to the house of the president of my photography club. He is going to be grilling some of his amazing tri-tip, and we'll have some of the folks from the club in attendance--it should be pretty fun!

Speaking of which, I have a fruit salad I need to start preparing, and it's time to get the ball rolling! Have a great week, y'all--and we'll talk to you next week!
Cheers, VacaDude

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port.   Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Happy Super Bowl day! I like this day because it is usually one of the yummiest days of the year, aside from Thanksgiving. All kinds of dips and treats and snacky stuff. Yummm!

I heard where some of the foods served at the stadium where the game is being played will be sprinkled with gold in honor of the Golden Anniversary of the event! Apparently there is really a form of edible gold leaf that is used. I don't think we will be having any of those snacks. That has more to do with the fact that the average ticket price for seats at the Super Bowl are going for just under $5,000. I don't know how much it would be for mice, but suffice it to say we will be watching the game from the comfort of somebody's living room. I mean, for that price, they may as well just sprinkle real gold dust on your bratwurst! (Although I think that might be kinda crunchy.)

The Dude is still working on my time machine, so be sure to come on by in two weeks. Next week is Valentine's Day, and the Dude and Dudette have plans for a romantic night out, so the next chat/StoryTime will be February 21st. Be sure to swing by and help write the story that will send me through time!!

In the meantime--have a great week, and have a good time watching the Super Bowl. Go Packers!! Go CHEESEheads!!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Cheesy Taco Soup

  Ingredients:

1 pound lean ground beef
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
2½ cups milk, divided
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, plus more for topping
1 package taco seasoning
10 ounce can diced tomatoes and chilis (Rotel), undrained
15 ounce can of pinto beans*
Crushed tortilla chips

  Directions:
Brown ground beef in a large soup pot over medium-high heat, seasoning with salt and pepper, until no longer pink. Drain and return to pot.

Meanwhile, in a separate pan, melt butter over medium heat then whisk in flour and cook for one minute. Slowly whisk in 1 cup milk, season with salt and pepper and stir mixture until thickened, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat then stir in shredded cheese until smooth. Set aside.

Add taco seasoning, rotel, beans, cheese sauce, and remaining 1½ cups milk into cooked ground beef then stir well to combine. Bring to a heavy simmer then turn heat down to medium and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve with crushed tortilla chips and more shredded cheese, if desired.

*Add black beans or substitute the pinto beans with any bean you prefer

Egg Roll Stir-Fry

  Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef or pork
1 large onion, diced
1 small head of cabbage
3 carrots
4-5 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons sesame oil
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
¼ cup soy sauce

  Directions:
Cook and crumble ground meat with onions in a very large skillet until meat is cooked through. Do not drain. You’ll need to select a skillet large enough to contain all the cabbage – divide everything evenly into two skillets if necessary.

While meat and onions are cooking cut cabbage into thin shreds; set aside. I cut mine in half lengthwise, set the cut side flat on the cutting board then thinly sliced the cabbage into strips.

Peel carrots with a vegetable peeler then either dice small or use the peeler to shave off thin slices; set aside.

Combine garlic, ginger, pepper, sesame oil, vegetable oil and soy sauce in a small bowl and stir to combine; set aside.

Add cabbage and carrots to ground meat then cook and stir over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes. Add soy sauce mixture then stir well.

Reduce heat to medium and continue cooking for 5-10 minutes or until cabbage is tender.

From the Dude

Here's a couple of photos I took this last week.

One I took as I walked around in San Francisco last week,

and another is from a news story--somebody vandalized

one of the signs to have it say "Superb Owl"

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

Mr. Sharoot recently traveled to Poland on business and has show and tell.

Mr. Sharoot went to the Gdansk Zoo while in Poland.
Although these birds are not residents of the zoo, they come for the delicious
offerings of the birds who live there. I wonder if CC’s has been delivering to them?

The first is a Blue Tit and the second, a White Stork.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

While marking her pupil's social studies test papers, the teacher was in a quandry about the answer given by one of the third-graders. Asked to name the four major directions, he wrote: "Listen carefully. Write neatly. Sit up straight. Raise your hand."

I was tidying up the house but finding the task difficult because of a pulled muscle in my lower back. As I was collecting the trash, something fell to the floor. Taking a deep breath and trying to ignore the pain, I stooped to retrieve the item. I couldn't help laughing when I realized it was an envelope marked "Do Not Bend."

There was a farmer who had many pigs. One day someone went to the farm and asked the farmer, "What do you use to feed your pigs?"

"Well, I give them acorn, corn, and things like that, whatever is cheap and available. Why?"

"Because I am from the Animals Protection Association and I think you don't feed them like you should, they shouldn't eat wastes."

Then he fined the farmer.

Some days later, another person arrived and asked the same question.

The farmer answered, "Well, I feed them very well. I give them salmon, caviar, shrimp, steak. Why?"

"Because I am from the United Nations Organization and I think it's unfair that you feed your pigs like that when there are people dying with nothing to eat."

And he fined the farmer.

Finally, another man came in and asked just the same question.

The hesitant farmer answered after a few minutes, "Well, I give five dollars to each pig so they can buy whatever they want."

RESCRIPT

Pronunciation:  \REE-skript\

noun

Definition of RESCRIPT

1 : a written answer of a Roman emperor or of a pope to a legal inquiry or petition

2 : an official or authoritative order, decree, edict, or announcement

3 : an act or instance of rewriting

EXAMPLES

The rescript declared that the lands surrounding the new palace would henceforth belong to the royal family.

"It was noon on August 25 when Japan's Emperor finally broke the silence. His recorded voice

was broadcast to the nation, reading the Imperial Rescript

on the Termination of the War." —

Jamie Seidel, The Daily Telegraph (Australia), 15 Aug. 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

Rescript was first used in the 15th century for the written reply of a sovereign or pope to a

question about some matter of law or state, and then for any type of authoritative declaration.

Since the 19th century, however, it has also seen use as a synonym of rewrite. Charlotte Brontë,

for one, used the word this way in her novel Villette. "I wrote [the letter] three times ...

subduing the phrases at every rescript," her narrator confesses.

NAME THAT SYNONYM

Fill in the blanks to create a synonym of rescript: di _ t _ t.
