Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Happy last day of January to you! And it is the weekend between the last playoff game and the Super Bowl. We are certainly feeling SB aware around here, because San Francisco is hosting the big event this time. I can say as a casual observer that there is a real love/hate thing going on with the Super Bowl around here. Some people are really into it, and some people are loathing the whole thing. The city made up a bunch of cool signs and placed them all over the city, and a number of them have been vandalized. Mostly it has to do with traffic. The organizers have done a really bad job of integrating the SB celebrations with the transportation infrastructure, and it is getting really messy out there. So it's anybody's guess as to how it is all going to come out. Hopefully not too many people will get hurt. Meanwhile, I'm looking to stay mostly clear of the morass.

A funny thing happened the other day--it became clear that the grounds crew preparing the stadium for the big game made a big boo-boo. They painted the Broncos logo in both end zones. One of the end zones was supposed to get the logo for the Carolina Panthers. Oops! They have since corrected it. It reminded me of that old SNICKERS commercial that had the groundskeeper painting the sign, and he put the Kansas City Chefs in. The player points it out to the old guy, and he goes "great googly-moogly."

Things are finally about wrapped-up for me on my big video project. So now I'm out shaking the trees to try to get new and fresh projects to fall out of them. I am hoping to engage in a little photography if there is to be a lull for a week or so. I haven't had much of a chance to do anything along those lines lately. I've still got a mostly-exposed roll of film in the old TLR camera that I need to develop.

I also just got the results back from the DNA test that Mary got for me for Christmas. A few surprises there--I have one quarter Irish, one quarter Scandinavian, and about one half western Europe! I had always heard in the family stories that there was some American Indian mixed in somehow, but that does not appear to be showing up in the DNA. Either that, or I'm not reading it right. So I'm having to back through it and read all the support material so that I can understand what I am looking at. But it certainly backs the whole connection with John Harrington, and that part still tickles me. I feel a sense of pride in the fact that my ancestor invented the flushing toilet. That's certainly using your head! (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Well, the day grows shorter and I still have lots of things I need to get done today, so I had better get back to it. Until the next time...
Cheers, VacaDude

TheDaddyBird, DotRot and ChatterChopz This has been the most horrible move. We're comfy in our new house, but there's still quita a lot at the old house. We broke an axle on the van during an ice storm early in the month so that really hindered our ability to transport things. But we'll have everything done this week. We're getting there. Pray for us in this rather stressful time of moving.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port.   Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Your old pal Zorro here. The preparations are being made for a big Super Bowl around here! Of course, we are just going to be watching it on TV--wouldn't want to go anywhere near the mess that is going to be happening in Santa Clara next weekend! Nope--we'll just be here with our snackies and leave the craziness to everybody else.

It is fun getting a chance to look at the ancestry of the Dude here, too. I don't quite understand all that DNA stuff, but it all looks very scientific. I'm pretty sure of my ancestry--I grew up in San Marcos, and I know I have a lot of cousins that came from Mexico--as it is only a little ways away from San Marcos. But beyond that--it is anybody's guess. It could be that we hail from the planet Petco!

Oh, and speaking of traveling through space and time, be sure to come by the next StoryTime writing. We won't be doing it next Sunday (because of the Super Bowl), and the following Sunday is Valentine's Day, so I think it will be the week after that (the 21st). The topic is going to cover time travel--the Dude is even building me a time machine to help tell the story of our adventures! But of course, it is YOU who need to help make the story...so be sure to set your calendar to come on by! (Or, if you have a time machine of your own, you can just set it to go there now and that way you'd get it done early...)

See all you cats later! (And, if you are an actual cat--perhaps MUCH later...)

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

  Today, let's go Chinese.

Sesame Beef

  Ingredients:

1½ pounds sirloin steak

4-5 tablespoons cornstarch

½ gallon oil

salt, to taste

For the sauce:

   3 cups sweet chili sauce

   ½ cup soy sauce

   ¼ cup sesame oil

   ¼ cup honey

Sesame seeds, for garnish

  Directions:
Cut sirloin steak across the grain into ¼-inch-thick pieces and place into a large bowl. Sprinkle with 3 tablespoons cornstarch. Stir to coat each piece in corn starch and set aside.

In a large, deep pot, pour in oil and bring up to 350-375 degrees. {You want about 4-6 inches of oil in your pot.}

The meat will absorb the cornstarch slightly, so sprinkle in 1-2 more tablespoons to coat everything again. Stir to ensure all the pieces of meat are separated from each other and evenly coated. This means extra crunchy beef!

Once the oil has come up to temp, drop in about 1/3 of the meat and stir with a slotted spoon. Cook the meat until browned and crispy. Drain onto paper towels and sprinkle with salt. Continue cooking the meat in batches until it’s all cooked.

In a large skillet, heat all ingredients for sauce until warmed. Add in crispy beef and stir to coat and heat thoroughly. Serve over rice with sesame seeds and parsley, if desired.

Crab Rangoon

  Ingredients:

1 (6 ounce) can crabmeat
8 ounces cream cheese, room temp
½ tablespoon minced garlic
2 green onions with tops, thinly sliced
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon light soy sauce
1 dash white pepper
wonton skins
1 beaten egg
deep frying oil

  Directions:
Pick over the crab to remove pieces of shell.

Use only about ½ teaspoon of filling for each wonton.

Seal edges with beaten egg.

(Make sure you squeeze out all the air or they'll pop open during frying and make a real mess)!

Deep fry at 350º until golden brown and crispy.

Blot on paper towels.

To bake instead of frying:
Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Lightly spray baking sheet with cooking spray. Arrange the rangoon on the baking sheet and lightly spray with cooking spray. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.

Sweet and Sour Sauce

  Ingredients:

2 tablespoons maraschino cherry syrup
2 tablespoons pineapple juice
¼ cup corn starch
1 cup water
¾ cup white sugar
½ cup vinegar

  Directions:
Mix cherry syrup, pineapple juice and ¼ cup water. Add corn starch and stir until smooth.

Mix remaining ¾ cup water, sugar and vinegar. Heat to a boil. Stir in corn starch mixture and boil until thickened.

From the Dude

Here's one of the more interesting examples of the selfies that I filtered on Dreamscope.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

Mr. Sharoot recently traveled to Poland on business and has show and tell.

Mr. Sharoot went to the Gdansk Zoo while in Poland.
Although these birds are not residents of the zoo, they come for the delicious
offerings of the birds who live there. I wonder if CC’s has been delivering to them?

The first is a Blue Tit and the second, a White Stork.

The Sunday school teacher asked her preschool class, "How many of you would like to go to Heaven?" All the children raised their hands except Tommy. The teacher asked Tommy why he wouldn't like to go to Heaven. Tommy answered, "I'm sorry, but I can't. My mother told me to come right home after Sunday school."

My father was a guard at San Quentin, and we lived on the prison grounds. Occasionally, inmates came by and helped with yard work. One day, Mom lost the keys to the shed. A man who was mowing the lawn offered to help. Picking up a hammer, he gave the lock two sharp taps, and it magically opened. "Wow," said Mom. "How did you do that so quickly?" Handing back the hammer, the prisoner said, "Ma'am, I'm not in this place for nothing."

JEREMIAD

Pronunciation:  \jair-uh-MYE-ud\

noun

Definition of JEREMIAD

a prolonged lamentation or complaint; also : a cautionary or angry harangue

EXAMPLES

Mrs. Whinge waggled a finger at us and launched into a doleful jeremiad

about how we would come to no good end.

"[Pope Francis's] now-famous jeremiads as pope against today's culture of excessive consumption

and environmental degradation are rooted in a thrift ethic that he

acquired early in life and never abandoned."

— David Blankenhorn, The Deseret Morning News (Salt Lake City), 11 Dec. 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

Jeremiah was a Jewish prophet who lived from about 650 to 570 BC. He spent his days lambasting

the Hebrews for their false worship and social injustice and denouncing the king for his selfishness,

materialism, and inequities. When not calling on his people to quit their wicked ways, he was lamenting

his own lot; a portion of the Bible's Book of Jeremiah is devoted to his "confessions," a series of
lamentations on the hardships endured by a prophet with an unpopular message. Nowadays, English
speakers use Jeremiah for a pessimistic person and jeremiad for the way these Jeremiahs carry on.
The word jeremiad was actually borrowed from the French, who coined it as jérémiade.
