Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
I hope everybody is enjoying their holiday weekend. A true rarity--I may even get a chance to enjoy a holiday off, as my client is pretty big on observing the holidays, so I probably will not be getting any notes back on Monday. (I turned in a new version of the video project on Friday.) So I will probably spend more time on Monday getting organized--I'm trying to get my electronic components organized, now that I will be doing some more tinkering with the Raspberry Pi.

I'm really sorry the audio was so low in the broadcast last week. I truly have no idea why that is--I checked all the equipment levels and everything was cranked all the way up. I suspect it has something to do with the Ustream Producer software...suddenly it does not like my Snowball microphone. Just like it suddenly decided it did not like my Logitech video camera. I feel like I'm being slowly shut out here...

I did see a lot of comments during the Pi video that I showed last week--along the lines of "why are you building a traffic signal?" Well, that is the equivalent of my "Hello, World!" circuit in electronics. You see, in the world of software programming, there is a tradition when you go to learn a new programming language, the first program you write is something that prints "Hello, World!" to the screen (or other output device). What that milestone does for you is it shows you that your compiler and linker are working, and that you have the ability to write text to an output device. After that, everything is gravy! Once your program can get messages to your eyes, then you can put debug statements in there and work to the completion of any desired result (in theory).

A traffic signal tells me I am in control of my voltages (trust me, I have smoked a few LEDs in my time--when I DIDN'T have the voltages correct), and it shows an ability to time signals and have clear logic states. And not to mention, traffic signals are pretty! Three colors, all bright and sparkly. I grew up in a small town with no signals--just stop signs. So I've always been fascinated with traffic signals. It meant the Big City to me! And now that I have shown that I can wire up this simple circuit, I can build on that and tackle more challenging projects with the Raspberry Pi.

One of the main things I am working toward is a visual display for the president of our photography club. His wife bought an old Philco radio set from the 40s, and the electronics in it are a big pile of rust. The case is in decent shape, though--so they are looking at installing a Raspberry Pi that can serve up some music and also drive a color display in the area where the radio dial used to be. He knew I was interested in electronics, so he approached me about doing it. I figured it was a good excuse to figure out how the Pi works! That is actually a skill that is in ever-increasing demand around here.

I also saw a project where somebody used a Pi and hooked it up to a small camera, and was able to mount that onto an eyepiece of some binoculars, and he used the Pi to be able to capture photographs through the eyepiece. I would love to make something like that which could attach to any kind of eyepiece, be it a microscope, telescope, binocular, boroscope...whatever! I could certainly get a lot of use out of that.

This morning I watched the launch of a Falcon 9 spacecraft (SpaceX) from California. Boy, it was foggy down there! You couldn't see anything until the engines started. But it was a beautiful launch and successful deployment of the satellite. Unfortunately, they tried to land the first stage on a barge again, and it landed hard and broke a leg off--falling over. They just can't seem to get that barge landing to work. They did a great landing on Terra Firma about a month ago!

Well, I'm going to get back to the football game. I am planning to do some sewing while the game is on--we need a couple more pot holders. I haven't done any sewing for over a year--I just hope I can remember how to thread the machine!

Have a great week, everyone!
Cheers, VacaDude

TheDaddyBird, DotRot and ChatterChopz We're still moving! While this is certainly not the time of year we'd normally choose to move, we really had no choice. We're at the point where we're half in one house and half in another. We still have a couple of weeks to get everything moved. It's kinda frustrating because almost any time we're needing something, no matter where we are, it's at the other house. But we're getting there. Pray for us in this rather stressful time of moving.

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

It is the time for the football playoffs--it is all so exciting! I was sorry to see the Packers lose last night though. I really like the hats of the fans! (They put enormous wedges of cheese on their heads and call themselves "cheeseheads." I like their style.)

It has been a busy weekend around here. After the Dude was working around the clock for days this week, we have been doing some cleaning and organizing. I am pretty good for finding places for things and stuffing them away. I guess I learned that from my pack rat cousins. The Dude has been organizing his electronics components, so that he can do some more experimenting with the gadgetry. I am hoping he is going to be working on a time machine. I think it would be fun to go back in time and visit all kinds of famous people. Of course, I suppose what would happen is that I would go running up to someone like Marie Antoinette, and she would scream "EEEK!" and jump up on a chair. Oh well--how many mice could brag that they scared the bejeebers out of the Queen of France??

Well, it is time to get busy again. Go, Football Teams! (I have still not managed to choose who in particular I want to cheer for...)

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

Garlic Shrimp and Egg Noodles

  Ingredients:

Noodles
2 beaten eggs
2½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Zest of ½ lemon
Water or milk as needed

Shrimp:

4 tablespoons butter (can use oil)

1 pound peeled and deveined shrimp
1 onion, diced
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Zest of ½ lemon
Salt and pepper to taste

Sauce:

3 tablespoons sweet butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 cups heavy cream

¼ teaspoon white pepper

½ cup grated parmesan cheese

¾ cup mozzarella cheese

  Directions:
  Noodles:
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, garlic and pepper. Add the beaten eggs, lemon juice and zest. Knead dough until smooth, adding water or milk as needed—about 5 minutes. Let rest in a covered bowl for 10 minutes.

On a floured surface, roll out to ⅛ or ¼ inch thickness. Cut into desired lengths and shapes.

Prepare of pot of boiling salted water. Drop the noodles into the water one at a time, stirring after every few additions. Allow to boil until noodles are al dente. Drain. Return to empty warm pot with lid on to keep warm until serving.

Shrimp:
Melt butter in skillet. Add onions and garlic. Sauté until tender. Add shrimp and cook until shrimp are pink and nicely done. Add juice, zest and seasonings. Heat through.

Sauce:
Melt butter in medium saucepan with olive oil over medium/low heat.

Add the garlic, cream, white pepper and bring mixture to a simmer.

Stir often.

Add the Parmesan cheese and simmer sauce for 8-10 minutes or until sauce has thickened and is smooth.

When sauce has thickened add the Mozzarella cheese and stir until smooth. STIR FREQUENTLY.

To serve:
Plate a serving of noodles and drizzle with a hearty serving of sauce. Serve shrimp alongside on a bed of sautéed onions. Serve with a salad or green vegetable.

Baked Apple Puffs

  Ingredients:

3 small cooking apples (Bramley, Braeburn, Jonathan, etc.)
1 lemon (juiced)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
¼ cup brown sugar
½ cup shelled pistachios
½ cup dried cranberries
2 sheets puff pastry
1 beaten egg

  Directions:
  Preheat the oven to 425ºF.

Peel and core the apples, then place in a bowl and cover with the lemon juice.

Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle over the apples. Massage the spice into the apples, both inside and out. Coat well.

Cut 3 large squares from the pastry—one to wrap each apple. (Save any scraps.)

Place a cored apple in the center of each square.

Place cranberries and pistachios in the bowl that the apples had been in and toss them with any remaining spice and lemon juice. Fill the hollowed cores of the apples with the cranberry/nut mix.

Brush around the edges of the pastry with egg and wrap the square up and around the apple to seal it in. Cut away where there is an excess of pastry, then brush all over with beaten egg. Decorate with the an optional pastry leaf cut from the pastry scraps.

Bake for 30 minutes until pastry is golden brown and the fruit is soft.

Serve with a drizzle of cream or scoop of ice cream.

From the Dude

Here's one of the more interesting examples of the selfies that I filtered on Dreamscope.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

These were taken last fall near Jekyll Island.
A couple of Turkey Vultures discussing lunch options.

And a pair of Bald Eagles also checking out the lunch menu.

I wonder whether CC’s delivers there?

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

When my sister teased her four-year-old daughter by suggesting she liked a certain boy in her kindergarten class, the little girl was quite indignant. "No mommy, I don't," she replied, "because he's only interested in one thing." Shocked, my sister cautiously asked what that might be. "Power Rangers, of course," said the toddler.

A career military man, who had retired as a corporal, was telling the younger men how he handled officers during his years of service. “It didn’t matter a hoot if he was a Major General, an Admiral, or the Commander-in-Chief. I always told those guys exactly where to get off. “Wow, you musta been something,” the admiring young soldiers remarked.“What was your job in the service?” “Elevator operator in the Pentagon.”

  The Senior Alphabet

A is for apple, and B is for boat,
That used to be right, but now it won't float!
Age before beauty is what we once said,
But let's be a bit more realistic instead.

The Alphabet For Seniors:

A's for arthritis,
B's the bad back,
C's the chest pains, perhaps car-di-ac?
D is for dental decay and decline,
E is for eyesight, can't read that top line!
F is for fissures and fluid retention,
G is for gas which I'd rather not mention.
H is for high blood pressure - I'd rather it low;
I for incisions with scars you can show.
J is for joints, out of socket, won't mend,
K is for knees that crack when they bend.
L 's for libido, what happened to sex?
M is for memory, I forget what comes next.
N is neuralgia, in nerves way down low;
O is for osteo, bones that don't grow!
P for prescriptions, I have quite a few,
Just give me a pill and I'll be good as new!
Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu?
R is for reflux, one meal turns to two.
senior alphabet
S is for sleepless nights, counting my fears,
T is for Tinnitus, bells in my ears!
U is for urinary, troubles with flow,
V for vertigo, that's 'dizzy,' you know.
W for worry, now what's going 'round?
X is for X ray, and what might be found.
Y for another year I'm left here behind,
Z is for zest I still have - in my mind!

LIMN

Pronunciation:  \LIM\

verb

Definition of LIMN

1 : to draw or paint on a surface
2 : to outline in clear sharp detail : delineate

3 : describe

EXAMPLES

In his Leatherstocking tales, James Fenimore Cooper limns the frontier adventures of wilderness scout Natty Bumppo.

"More than 120 objects [in the museum exhibit] limn the achievements of the Andean

empire in the 15th and 16th centuries."

— Mark Feeney, The Boston Globe, 16 Aug. 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

Allow us to shed some light on the history of limn, a word with lustrous origins.

Limn traces to the Anglo-French verb enluminer and ultimately to the Latin illuminare,

which means "to illuminate." Its use as an English verb dates from the days of Middle English;

at first, limn referred to the action of illuminating (that is, decorating) medieval manuscripts

with gold, silver, or brilliant colors. William Shakespeare extended the term to painting in

his poem Venus and Adonis

"Look when a painter would surpass the life

In limning out a well-proportioned steed…."

Soon after, limn began to be used as a word for illustrating or giving detail without a paintbrush.
