Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Note from December 27, 2015
  Hello Vriends,
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, Boxing Day, Christmas Eve, Festivus, and all that! I'm afraid things were a bit muted here, as Mary came down with a cold or something a few days before the holiday, and she is still on the mend. She tried really hard to not spread her germs over my way, but apparently that effort was for naught. I started getting the sore throat last night, and this morning it is very much worse and right now I am very nauseous. So hopefully I can write a few words here and get done before I lose my breakfast! (Okay, possibly over-sharing there...)

I have some exciting news, and I feel the best way to announce it is in the broadcast--so be sure to tune in next Sunday the 3rd of January. We can ring in the new year together, and I can introduce you to my "new" family members. You see, VacaSis gave me a great present on Christmas Eve. She has found a connection with a whole other branch of our family tree, and this one has some exciting folks in it! I've been having a lot of fun these last few days exploring this new branch of the family. I've been sitting on this ever since the 24th, so I'll just sit on it a few more days.

Speaking of presents, I really want to thank you all for the gift of knowledge again--in the way of the magazine subscriptions! That is so very kind of y'all!! It really is my best conduit to the natural world, at least from inside my most unnatural environment (which is this office).

As for presents here at home, I got some science books, including a fascinating memoir from the physicist Richard Feynman, that I just started reading last night. Mary also got me a DNA kit from Ancestry.com, so last night I took my DNA sample and packaged it up, and tomorrow I'll put it in the mail. I'll be curious to see what my DNA has to say about our family origin. I'm hoping that it might confirm some of the genealogical research I've already done, and perhaps point me in some new directions.

Mary also got me a Raspberry Pi development kit. This is something that has been creating quite a stir in the technology world lately. The RPi is kind of like an Arduino microcontroller, but actually the next step up. This is a whole computer on a single board. It is not much bigger than a credit card, and has the power of a PC from around the late 1990s time frame. So it's not as fast as current technology, but there is its diminutive size and price (about $25 to $35). This represents my attempt to ease myself back into the technology arena--there is a lot of demand for developers who can create apps for this sector.

So I guess that is about it--I have managed to get through this and keep my food down (I took some Pepto-Bismol, which helped). I wish everyone a great week, and I look forward to chatting with you all next weekend!

p.s. Oh, and I wanted to explain a bit about the holiday card design I put on Zazzle. I had tried to access my old account with CafePress, but I am finding that many things have changed there. In short, I could not even figure out how to design something and make it available for sale! The process used to be so good there. What it seems like is that they took a lot of the controls out of the design process, perhaps to make it simpler for the non-designers. What it means is that for those of us who HAVE designed there in the past, the new stripped-down design controls means that you cannot totally get the products to show up the way you designed them to.

So basically, I gave up and tried setting something up on Zazzle (a site I had heard good things about). However, I never really seem to have gotten that to work 100% either, so I'm just not sure how successful this is going to go. But in the event you are interested in seeing the greeting card design I came up with, the link is here: VacaDude
Cheers, VacaDude

  Note from January 3, 2016

  Hello Vriends,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Welcome to the first newsletter of 2016. I hope that everyone has a great new year coming up. Of course, this is a Presidential election year, so we are going to be seeing lots and lots of political ads in the coming months. Lots and lots and lots. And lots more, and a lot more after that. Lots and lots. Lots.

Not much has happened here since last week, so I don't know that I have much to add. I spent much of the week between Christmas and New Year being sick. First Mary was sick on Christmas, and even though she was careful to avoid spreading germs around the house, I started getting it the day after Christmas. Fortunately, the SciFy Channel was running a Twilight Zone marathon--every episode ever made--over the course of the week and weekend, so when I was up in the middle of the night because my cough was keeping me up, at least I always had something fun to watch to help me try to get back to sleep.

Sorry we had to postpone the chat for a week, but it is probably just as well--my voice is still pretty raspy from all the coughing. I'll sound a lot more like myself in a week.

Probably the biggest thing that we did since last weekend--we went to see the new Star Wars film on New Year's eve. And boy, do I ever have a great big bag of mixed feelings about that movie. Certain parts I enjoyed and got very excited about, and other aspects of it I did not like at all. I am not going to mention anything specific here, for fear of spoiling any surprises for anyone who has not had a chance to see it yet, but oh I do have some strong opinions about it!

Well, like I say--not much else has gone on this week. Tomorrow my client should be back in their office, so it is time to get back on the hamster wheel again. So I hope to see you next week, and among other things I will be making my big announcement! Until then...enjoy your first week of 2016!

  Cheers, VacaDude

TheDaddyBird, DotRot and ChatterChopz We're still moving! While this is certainly not the time of year we'd normally choose to move, we really had no choice. We're at the point where we're half in one house and half in another. We still have a couple of weeks to get everything moved. It's kinda frustrating because almost any time we're needing something, no matter where we are, it's at the other house. But we're getting there. Pray for us in this rather stressful time of moving.

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Note from December 27, 2015
  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas with lots of yummies and such. We had a nice roast beef and potatoes and beets and stuff. We also had some apple pie, and now the Dude has got some kind of thingie that is going to help him make Raspberry pie. Yum!! I'm not sure why you have to hook a keyboard and mouse up to it, but I guess that is the state of the art in pie making these days. Since he needs a mouse as well, I am getting fitted for my harness. Hey, if there is pie involved, I'll do whatever it takes!

It sure has been cold around here lately. I know it is not as cold as a lot of you are used to, back in the midwest and east and all, but for this little rodent from southern California, this is really chilly! I have been spending a lot of time snuggled under the blankets. I'm just glad that we are finally getting some rain. All these dry lakes have really been cutting into my water skiing...

Well, got a whole bunch of activities planned for today. I'm the one that has to hold up the end of the productivity scale, because the Dude is starting to get sick. VacaChick was sick first, and then the Dude. I just hope it's not something us mousies can catch!

Have a great week everbuddy, and we'll see you on the StoryTime next weekend!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

  Note from January 3, 2016
  Hello there, Everbuddy!
Zorro the Mouse here, and I hope you are all having a good year so far! Only a few days into it...hopefully it hasn't come apart at the seams yet.

I'm thinking I may be about to come apart at the seams, though--if I keep eating all of these holiday goodies! The Dude is trying to be good about his diet, so it means that all the candies and stuff that friends, relatives, and clients send...I have to eat most of it! I think I have had enough Moose Munch this week to last me a dozen lifetimes.

It has been fun getting up in the middle of the night to watch Twilight Zone with the Dude. Usually he makes me go to bed pretty early, but since he has been having to get up and go coughing so late at night, I think he has been letting me stay up to keep him company. I have to say though, it really messes with your grasp on reality to watch so much of that show in a short time period! They had some pretty imaginative writers on that show (and that Rod Serling was no slouch either!)

Well, I guess I will see you all next weekend, and we'll do the StoryTime then. Hopefully I will have a nice little bit of costume to wear, too--something to coincide with the Dude's "big announcement!" So until then, have a great week!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

Mother Owl Takes On Snake—and Wins
Ketaki sent this in. She says, "I saw it live when it happened and it was so fast. It's too bad she didn't kill it and feed to the owlets. They could have used the food, and the snake, a rat snake, is non-venomous. But she was intent on protection. They run it in slow motion at the end so you can see her, and the inset window shows the snake coming down from the top."

Here's one of the more interesting examples of the selfies that I filtered on Dreamscope.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

This Northern Flicker has been visiting our yard lately.  Yesterday he was doing his best owl imitation.
He turned his head every which way. Maybe he was looking for Santa???

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

A teacher has been arrested at Dulles International Airport in possession of slide rules, protractors, and calculators. It is claimed he is a member of the Al Gebra network. He was charged with carrying weapons of math instruction.

A fisherman carelessly dropped his wallet into the water and was amazed to see a school of carp deftly balancing the wallet on their noses and tossing it from one fish to the other. "Gosh," exclaimed the fisherman, "That's the first time I've ever seen, 'Carp to carp walleting!'"

One winter, my wife and I built a skating rink in a field near our house. A shepherd leading his flock decided to take a shortcut across the rink. The sheep, however, were afraid of the frozen rink and wouldn't cross it. So the shepherd began pulling them to the other side. "Look at that," my wife mused as she looked out the window at the unfolding scene, "He's trying to pull the wool over our ice!"

A contestant on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" had reached the final plateau. I f she answered the next question correctly, she would win$1,000,000. If she answered incorrectly, she would pocket only the $32,000 milestone money.

As she suspected it would be, the million- dollar question was no pushover. It was:

Which of the following species of birds does not build its own nest, but instead lays its eggs in the nests of other birds? Is it

A) the condor;
B) the buzzard;
C) the cuckoo; or
D) the vulture?"

The woman was on the spot. She did not know the answer. And she was doubly on the spot because she had used up her 50/50 Lifeline and her Audience Poll Lifeline.

All that remained was her Phone-a-Friend Lifeline, and the woman had hoped against hope that she would not have to use it because the only friend that she knew would be home wasn't too bright.

But the contestant had no alternative. She called her friend and gave her the question and the four choices.

Her friend responded unhesitatingly: "That's easy. The answer is C: The cuckoo."

The contestant had to make a decision and make it fast.

She considered employing a reverse strategy and giving Regis any answer except the one that her friend had given her. And considering that her friend wasn't the smartest person she knew, it would seem to be the logical thing to do.

On the other hand -- her friend had responded with such confidence, such certitude, that the contestant could not help but be persuaded.

"I need an answer," said Regis.

Crossing her fingers, the contestant said, "C: The cuckoo."

"Is that your final answer?" asked Regis.

"Yes, that is my final answer."

Two seconds later, Regis said, "I regret to inform you that the answer is .... absolutely correct. You are now a millionaire!"

Three days later, the contestant hosted a party for her family and friends including the friend who had helped her win the million dollars.

"Jenny, I just do not know how to thank you," said the contestant. "Because of your knowing the answer to that final question, I am now a millionaire. And do you want to know something? It was your assuredness with which you answered the question that convinced me to go with your choice. By the way, how did you happen to know the right answer?"

"Oh, come on!" said her friend. "Everybody knows that cuckoos don't build nests. They live in clocks."

OBJET TROUVÉ

Pronunciation:  AWB-zhay-troo-VAY

noun

Definition of OBJET TROUVÉ

a natural or discarded object found by chance and held to have aesthetic value

EXAMPLES

"Architects, too, have discovered found objects—usually substantial buildings like barns,

firehouses, power stations, train depots—but the objet trouvé that Robert A. M. Stern

recently transformed into a writers' penthouse and all-purpose retreat from his office

below was a humble, metal-clad storage shed…."

— Joseph Giovannini, Architectural Digest, July 2007

"The American sculptor Judith Scott literally concealed things: each of her cocoonlike

constructions began with an objet trouvé—an umbrella, a skateboard, a tree branch,

her own jewelry—around which she wound layers and layers and layers of yarn, twine,

and strips of textiles until the item's identity was obscured."

— Andrea K. Scott, The New Yorker, 1 Dec. 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

Objet trouvé comes from French, where it literally means "found object."

The term entered English during the early 20th century, a time when many artists challenged

traditional ideas about the nature of true art. Surrealists and other artists, for instance, held

that any object could be a work of art if a person recognized its aesthetic merit. Objet trouvé

can refer to naturally formed objects whose beauty is the result of natural forces as well as

to man-made artifacts (such as bathtubs, wrecked cars, or scrap metal)

that were not originally created as art but are displayed as such.
