Channel Links |
The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat.
However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh
without losing both chat and video. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Hello Vriends, | ||
Seasons Greetings, Vriends!
Wow--I can't believe we are only less than a week away from Christmas. I have been working so many hours and so hard on this video for EMC, that I have barely had time to lift my head up and away from the computer screen. And now I only have a few days before Christmas, and I still have some things for Mary that I need to order! It looks like I will have to shell out for the express deliveries... One of the most interesting things I have done in the last few days, was learning about the state-of-the-art in algorithmic painting. I was approached by a producer with whom I just finished a project with, and he said he had a potential client who was interested in having some rotoscoping work done. This is a technique that has been around for many years (in one form or another) that involves drawing on top of the frames of a piece of video footage or animation. It has recently been featured in a couple of films: "The Scanner Darkly" and "Waking Life." Also about a year ago it showed up in some interview-type commercials for Charles Schwab. So I had to do some research so that I could put some budget estimates together, and hopefully it will all result in a new contract for the start of the year. (Fingers crossed, because I really enjoy doing roto work.) But as part of the research, I needed to see if there were any ways to impart an artistic style onto a given frame of a video, to make it look more like a piece of artwork. For years Photoshop has had some filters known as the "artistic series," but the results were always rather bad. However, I have found out that there has been a lot of exciting work done in this area! This led me to look at a number of different apps and web sites, but the one that stands out in my mind is called Dreamscope. It has over a hundred filters that you can apply to a photograph that you upload to their site. The filters range from simple effects to actually emulating the styles of given artists--or even particular paintings. Some results are better than others, but some are simply amazing. I did a test case where I took a quick selfie with my webcam, and then ran that photo through dozens of different filters. Some of the images blew my mind--they looked so good! Some are so amazing I have been considering having them printed out and framed to use as self-portraits! But aside from that, and freaking out about Christmas, there is not much else to tell here. So with that, I will bid you all a very Merry Christmas, and we'll talk to you in a week! Cheers, VacaDude p.s. Oh, and I wanted to explain a bit about the holiday card design I put on Zazzle. I had tried to access my old account with CafePress, but I am finding that many things have changed there. In short, I could not even figure out how to design something and make it available for sale! The process used to be so good there. What it seems like is that they took a lot of the controls out of the design process, perhaps to make it simpler for the non-designers. What it means is that for those of us who HAVE designed there in the past, the new stripped-down design controls means that you cannot totally get the products to show up the way you designed them to. So basically, I gave up and tried setting something up on Zazzle (a site I had heard good things about). However, I never really seem to have gotten that to work 100% either, so I'm just not sure how successful this is going to go. But in the event you are interested in seeing the greeting card design I came up with, the link is here: VacaDude |

TheDaddyBird, DotRot and ChatterChopz | We're moving! While this is certainly not the time of year we'd normally choose to move, we really had no choice. Our landlord elected not to renew our lease because of the many repairs he's not done to the house we're in. He says it will be easier to make the repairs if the house is empty. Sooooo - we've been house hunting. We've found one we all love. Its front yard looks out over the playground of the elementary school CC attended. It's got a beautiful working fireplace, a huge privacy-fenced backyard, an extra bathroom (CC gets her own bathroom and she's thrilled!), and a nice big kitchen. We officially take possession on the 1st, but the landlord is letting us start moving in a little early so we can celebrate all of the 12 days of Christmas in the new house. Pray for us in this rather stressful time of moving.

Littleguys | UPDATE: (as of
10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back
started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't
show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc,
and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed
with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic
nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with
arthritis.
But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero
Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was
time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica
last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something
no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing
as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where
the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well,
three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much
better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two
years ago??? Not a magic wand, but so much better,

Hello there, Everbuddy!
Does everyone have visions of sugar plums dancing in
their heads yet? Personally, I have visions of dairy
products swirling around in MY head. Yummy!
Yes, it is soon time for old Saint Nick to come visit the Vacahouse here. I wonder what kinds of things he is going to bring me? Certainly an assortment of cheeses would be quite nice, but I'm also hoping to pick up some furnishings for my bachelor apartment, as well. Hmmm. That reminds me--I never did get the Dude to install a chimney in the apartment, so I'm not sure how the Jolly old Santa is going to get the presents into the apartment. Maybe he can just leave them on the porch. Maybe the Dude could build me a porch, since I don't have a chimney. Oh well--I know that Santa is a very crafty old guy, so I'm sure he will be able to figure something out. Lots of scurrying around to do here today, so I guess I had better get back to the scurrying! Have a verrrry Merry Christmas, everbuddy!! |

For years my husband and I had complained bitterly about the
lack of sidewalks in our small town, observing often that if
only we had sidewalks, we would walk daily and become models of
fitness. So we were thrilled when a community sidewalk project
was announced, and watched eagerly as paving neared completion.
Then wishful thinking and reality collided. "Well, dear," my
husband said, "What'll we use as an excuse for not walking now?"

NATATORIAL
Pronunciation: \nay-tuh-TOR-ee-ul\
adjective
Definition of NATATORIAL
1 : of or relating to swimming
2 : adapted to or characterized by swimming
EXAMPLES
This year's swim team has considerably more natatorial talent than have previous years' teams.
"Natatorial legs are modified for swimming, producing a feathered oar-like form,
used by beetles
and bugs that spend their lives in water."
— Whitney Cranshaw and Richard Redak, Bugs Rule!, 2013
DID YOU KNOW?
The Latin verb natare, meaning "to swim," gave English the word natatorial and its variant natatory.
It also gave us natant ("swimming or floating in water"); supernatant ("floating on the surface");
natation ("the action or art of swimming"); and last but not least, natatorium ("an indoor swimming pool").
A few common English words are related to this rather obscure bunch, among them nurture, nutrient,
and nutrition, but these descend not from natare, but from nutrire, a Latin
word (meaning "to nourish") that shares an ancestor with natare.
