Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Sunday to you, and I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! We had a fairly relaxing day of cooking, and we were going with smaller everything, with less food--so it was about low-stress as we could get. Because of my diet I am having to count calories, so we had basically the same food but I just took smaller portions. So far I think I have managed to not have my diet come completely off the rails. One down, one to go (I always tend to overeat around Christmas as well).

I even got to try experimenting with a sweet potato recipe, and it turned out rather well! We had gotten some yam salad from a deli at the local market, and I looked at the ingredients list and decided to try to replicate the dish. I think I came pretty close.

I finally made it out to Folsom Lake this week--just one day before a big rainstorm. It made for an interesting afternoon. All of the foundations I had seen before were visible again by the reduced lake level. I got some good photos with a couple of different cameras. It was a very strange feeling to walk around there and know that you are walking where normally you would be over a hundred feet underwater!

Well, we have a couple of days left in November, but then next Sunday is the first Sunday in December. Which of course means that there will be a chat next week. Yay! So until then...have a great week!
Cheers, VacaDude

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Oh, it has been so lovely here for the past few days! Lots of yummy foods and treats, and I have stuffed my tummy full. Turkey and yams and pumpkin pie and dressing...Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year!

It has been really cold here lately--a bunch of air from Alaska has come down to blow on us. So I've been trying to keep toasty in my new apartment. The Dude rigged-up some plastic tubing to run some heat out of the central air/heat system and pump it into my vapor-chamber-turned-apartment. Now with the warm air and big windows, my place is starting to feel like a ski lodge. All we need is some snow and for me to get some really tiny skis, and we'd be all set! Of course, it never snows here, or at least--extremely seldom.

Well, we shall see y'all next week for the StoryTime, I hope! Until then, cheery warmsies!!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Christmas Pinwheels

  Ingredients:
  ¾ cup dried sweetened cranberries
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
¾ cup crumbled feta cheese
½ cup chopped green onion
¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
¼ cup chopped pistachios or pecans
4 large flour tortillas, wheat or spinach for pretty color

  Directions:
Combine all ingredients except tortillas, mix well.
Divide mixture and spread mixture evenly among tortillas.
Roll up tightly, wrap in plastic and refrigerate at least one hour.
To serve cut each into 12 slices.

Mini Pumpkin Cheesecakes

  Ingredients:

For the Crust:
30 cookies, crushed, makes about 1½ cups of crumbs

        (gingersnaps, graham crackers, vanilla wafers)
   3 tablespoons granulated sugar
   6 tablespoons salted butter
For the Cheesecake:
16 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
   ⅔ cup granulated sugar
   1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
   2 large eggs, room temperature
   ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
   ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
   ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
1 15-ounce can pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 325°F. Line 24 muffin tins with paper liners and set aside.

In a medium bowl combine cookie crumbs, sugar, and melted butter until it resembles fine sand. Spoon about a level tablespoonful into each prepared muffin tin, spreading along the bottom with the back of your spoon.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla on medium speed until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, blending well after each and scraping the sides of the bowl. Fold in pumpkin and spices with a spatula until combined.

Pour filling into prepared tins, filling about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way full. Bake for roughly 20 minutes or until centers are set.

Remove and let cool in pans for about 30 minutes before removing from pan to finish cooling on wire rack.

Top with whipped cream before serving, if desired.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of shots that came out pretty well from this morning's photo session.

I think the one of the red-tailed hawk came out very nicely.

You can really see him looking down at me and checking me out! (Luckily I didn't look all that tasty...)

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

This week features a few babies we saw at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center in Jekyll Island.
This little guy’s name is Sprout. He is a Loggerhead Sea Turtle and he is anxiously awaiting
his boat ride out to sea to join his brothers and sisters. He’s a year old now
has been a favorite attraction there, I know we loved him!

These are Diamond Back Terrapin babies. They are much smaller than the Loggerheads and

they live in the tidal marshes. They were adorable!

Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

A train stops at a train station. A bus stops at a bus station.
Now why is my desk called a 'work station'?

Thanksgiving is a time when turkeys turn from gobblers to gobblees.

What are the small rivers that run into the Nile?
The juve-niles!

Yogi Berra/Quotes
When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
You can observe a lot by just watching.
It ain't over till it's over
It's like déjà vu all over again.
No one goes there nowadays, it’s too crowded.
Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.
A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore.
Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours.
We made too many wrong mistakes.
Congratulations. I knew the record would stand until it was broken.

MINATORY

Pronunciation:  \MIN-uh-tor-ee\

adjective

Definition of MINATORY

having a menacing quality

EXAMPLES

In the moonlight, the twisted winter trees took on a particularly baleful and minatory appearance.

"No one likes to hear or heed prophets of doom, but history is replete with them.…

The minatory mutterings of the Delphic Oracle were often unheeded by the Greeks."

— Brian Roche, Redlands (California) Daily Facts, 28 Sept. 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

Knowing that minatory means "threatening," can you take a guess at a related word?

If you're familiar with mythology, perhaps you guessed Minotaur, the name of the bull-headed,

people-eating monster of Crete. Minotaur is a good guess, but as terrifying as the monster sounds,

its name isn't related to today's word. The relative we're searching for is actually menace.

Minatory and menace both come from derivatives of the Latin verb minari, which means "to threaten."

Minatory was borrowed directly from Late Latin minatorius. Menace came to English via Anglo-French

manace, menace, which came from Latin minac-, minax, meaning "threatening."
