Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Sunday to you all. I hope everybody is enjoying the football games, time with family, yardwork, or whatever. Me? I'm just chilling out with my morning cups of coffee. And Bach's "Coffee Cantata." I kind of slept in this morning, as I was in San Francisco last night and didn't get home until fairly late. I went to a screening of the Vietnam film that I worked on last year--as part of the Veterans Film Festival in SF. It was good to get together with Norman--the director of the film. I hadn't seen him for a while. We had a nice Vietnamese dinner and got a chance to catch up.

Then on Thursday, I was also at an event in SF. This was the launching of a graphic novel that the husband of a co-worker was launching. (She was a video editor at Indigo Film while I was there.) I got to meet her husband and also the main artist responsible for the artwork of the book. I found the experience interesting, inspiring, and yet a shade depressing. I still have this idea for a graphic novel, and I don't know if I will ever get it out of my head and onto paper. It is a lot of work, and I have my hands full just trying to keep the ship afloat.

While I might be tempted to drive a stake through the heart of this particular dream and never look back, unfortunately it has a built-in reminder that serves to slap me in the face every second week of October. You see, I got the idea for it on Columbus Day of 2007, so every Columbus Day I get a reminder, and I can easily calculate how long it has been since I got the idea, and compare that with how little progress I have made on it. I wish I could just purge Columbus Day from my calendar, but of course that is impossible.

And of course, my thoughts these last few days have been wrapped around the events in Paris. When I first heard the news, I got Facebook updates from an old friend of mine. Max was also an editor at Indigo Films, and I worked with him on several projects back in the 2004 timeframe. He has been living in Paris for a couple of years, and it turns out he was right in the middle of this mess. He and his partner had gone to the movies, and when it all went down the management of the theater came in and told everybody to stay in place--that they were safest in the theater. After several hours, they were allowed to return home. Their apartment is on the same block as the restaurant that was bombed. (In fact, he described that restaurant as their "it's 10pm and no food in the fridge" establishment.) The intersection where the mass shooting occurred is at the other end of the block. They had just walked through it on the way to the movie theater--about 30 minutes before the attack. And he says the Bataclan Theater is about a five minute walk from their front door. Very scary times.

I had been hoping to take my old camera with me to SF last night, and do some night photography. However, I could not find my shutter release, and I fear I may have lost it on my last trail outing. So no photography this week. And I still haven't made it out to Folsom Lake. It looks like I might try for that tomorrow. Of course, now I will need to avoid the crime scene--a kid came across human skeletal remains last week--right at the water's edge. The lake is only two feet away from its all-time lowest level, so there's no telling what is going to show up next. That's why I want to get out there and do some hiking and exploring myself. This is all area that has been well under water for almost sixty years.

Well, it is time to get back to the work at hand. Have a great week, y'all!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

It is Zorro the Mouse, here. Everybody at the Casa de Vaca is tucked up all cozy-like. It was supposed to rain today, but apparently that consisted of some showers around 4am, and now it is just scattered clouds. I might try to watch some football later, but for now--it's quiet time.

So sad what is happening overseas. One of my favorite films of all times is "Ratatouille." It is set in Paris, so that is how I like to think of Paris--bright, and full of folks who love to eat! And that pretty much describes me to a tee.

Sometimes I just don't understand two-leggers. They often seem so eager to hurt and kill each other. Here in the animal world, when we kill there is usually a good reason for it--like providing food for your family. I don't even hold a grudge against McGee and all barn owls--because I know they were only doing what they needed to for survival. However, two-leggers seem to have much more flimsy excuses for killing. And yet they claim they are smarter than the animals? That just doesn't compute.

Oh well--that's enough unhappy thoughts for today. I am going to embrace life, and be thankful for the fact that I am still around to draw air into my tiny lungs (even though, for some reason, I have a human hand in the space where my tiny lungs should be--but who's sweating the details. Not THIS mouse!)

Have a great week, everbuddy!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Turkey Cheese Ball

  Ingredients:
  Cheese Ball
2 packages (8 ounces each) reduced-fat cream cheese
6 ounces deli smoked turkey, finely chopped
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon garlic powder
Decorations
3 packages (3 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons 2% milk
Brown, orange and yellow paste food coloring
6 large oval crackers (like Townhouse Oval Bistro crackers)
1 large sweet red pepper
1 small sweet yellow pepper
1 cup pecan halves
Assorted crackers

  Directions:
In a small bowl, beat the first six ingredients until combined. Shape into a ball; wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm.

In another small bowl, beat cream cheese and milk until smooth. Divide among four small bowls. With food coloring, tint one bowl brown, one dark orange and one light orange (using yellow and orange); leave one bowl plain.

Transfer each mixture to a heavy-duty resealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in a corner of each bag.

For turkey tail feathers, decorate the top halves of large oval crackers with tinted cream cheese.

Using the red pepper, form the turkey head, neck and wattle.
For beak, cut a small triangle from yellow pepper; attach with cream cheese. Add eyes, using brown and plain cream cheese. Insert pecan halves and decorated crackers into cheese ball.

Serve with assorted crackers.

Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Soft Pretzels

  Ingredients:

Pretzels
1⅓ cups very warm water
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
2 tablespoons honey
4 cups flour
½ cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
The Boil
Water
⅓ cup baking soda
Coating
¼ cup (4 tablespoons) butter, melted
¼ cup sugar + 1 tablespoons cinnamon
Frosting
3 cups powdered sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
2-3 tablespoons of milk

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a baking sheet with cooking spray. Whisk together warm water, yeast and honey. Allow to rest for 5 minutes.

Add flour, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and pumpkin puree to water-yeast mixture and mix until dough comes together.

Transfer dough to a very well floured surface and knead a few times. Allow to rest for 10 minutes.

Roll dough into a long log and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long log (about 16-18 inches) twist dough into a pretzel shape.

Fill a pot with about 2-3 inches of water. Bring to a boil. Slowly sprinkle baking soda into water (careful, it will bubble and foam).

Carefully drop a pretzel into the water. Allow to boil for 30 seconds. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a paper towel. Repeat with remaining pretzels. Place pretzels on greased baking sheet. (You may need to bake them in two batches). Bake for 10-15 minutes until pretzels are lightly browned. Allow to cool for a few minutes.

Whisk together cinnamon and sugar, then spread it out in a layer on a plate. Brush melted butter onto baked pretzels, then dip the buttered side into the cinnamon sugar, move it around to coat the front of the pretzel well with cinnamon and sugar. Repeat with remaining pretzels.
For the frosting, mix together powdered sugar, vanilla, and cream cheese until smooth. Add milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. (I like it a little bit thinner for drizzling, thicker for dipping). Serve with pretzels.

The Start of the Blues

This is supposed to be the ONLY time Carson sang in public!

This show is at Kiel Opera House in St Louis in June, 1965 when Johnny Carson hosted the Tonight Show.

The Rat Pack were playing Vegas, but visited Carson for this wonderfully entertaining performance.

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Johnny Carson, and to top it off

Quincy Jones was conducting the Count Basie band, and he is visible in the background.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of shots that came out pretty well from this morning's photo session.

I think the one of the red-tailed hawk came out very nicely.

You can really see him looking down at me and checking me out! (Luckily I didn't look all that tasty...)

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

This little deer was quite curious about us. Maybe she was looking to see if we had brought her a snack from CC’s cafe.

A Little Blue Heron joined some Glossy Ibis. And these guys were very busy finding their own snacks. Nom, nom, nom. Burp.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

Which side of the turkey has the most feathers?
The outside.

The stern teacher silently panned his gaze across all the kids. After about a minute or so, he spoke... "From the outset, I want you all to know that there are two words that are absolutely unacceptable in this classroom. You cannot use them as you recite, or in any of your papers, tests, or homework. Using these words even once, will get you a failing grade for that quarter. The first one is "gross" and the other one is "cool." Are there any questions?" After a few moments of silence, this gawky teen at the back of the room raises his hand, and the teacher calls upon him. In a pubescent croaking voice, the kid asks, "So, what are they?"

What do you get when you cross a turkey with an octopus?
Enough drumsticks for everybody.

What’s the difference between a jumping warlock and a tearful iguana?
One is a leaping wizard, and the other is a weeping lizard.

Doctor Bloom who was known for miraculous cures for arthritis had a waiting room full of people when a little old lady, completely bent over in half, shuffled in slowly, leaning on her cane. When her turn came, she went into the doctor's office, and, amazingly, emerged within half an hour walking completely erect with her head held high.

A woman in the waiting room who had seen all this walked up to the little old lady and said, "It's a miracle! You walked in bent in half and now you're walking erect. What did that doctor do?"

She answered, "Miracle, shmiricle. He gave me a longer cane."

MIASMA

Pronunciation:  \mye-AZ-muh\

adjective

Definition of MIASMA

1: a vaporous exhalation formerly believed to cause disease; also : a heavy vaporous emanation or atmosphere
2: an influence or atmosphere that tends to deplete or corrupt; also : an atmosphere that obscures : fog

EXAMPLES

"A local photographer graciously let me borrow a good lens-cleaning cloth, which I used

repeatedly in the swirling miasma of mist and rain."

— Clark Fair, The Alaska Dispatch News, 13 Sept. 2015

"Economists say Greece, which had only started to recover from a grinding five-year

recession, risks a relapse because of the miasma of financial uncertainty."

— Jack Ewing and Liz Alderman, The New York Times, 7 May 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

Miasma entered English from New Latin in the mid-1600s and comes ultimately from the

Greek miainein, meaning "to pollute." In notes taken during a voyage to South America on

the HMS Beagle in the 1830s, Charles Darwin described an illness that he believed was caused

by "miasma" emanating from stagnant pools of water. For him, miasma meant an invisible

emanation of "infecting substances floating in the air … considered to be noxious to health,"

as defined in Noah Webster's 1828 An American Dictionary of the English Language. Nowadays,

we know germs are the source of infection, so we aren't likely to use the unscientific miasma

this way. But while Darwin was out to sea, broader applications of miasma were just starting

to spread. Now the term is used for something destructive or demoralizing

that surrounds or permeates.
