Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
I hope everybody had a happy first week of November. Hopefully y'all survived the time change. It was touch and go there for a while for me. I sometimes have difficulty giving up that hour in the fall evenings.

We have actually been getting a little bit of rain here lately. Not a whole lot, but enough to give us some hope. I still have not had a chance to get out to Folsom Lake to do my hiking. I noticed this morning that the lake level has gone up by a quarter inch--the first actual rise so far since spring. Hopefully I can get out there later this upcoming week.

One thing that really blew my mind today. It turns out that today is the 75th anniversary of a date which will live in civil engineering infamy. It was on this day in 1940 that the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in upstate Washington collapsed in dramatic fashion. I'm sure you have all seen the footage of it--the roadway of the bridge swaying violently from side to side in the moments leading up to the total collapse. As a student studying physics and engineering, I was forced to watch and analyze that footage dozens of times...it is the classic example of how resonant frequencies--if not adequately dampened--can cause a building or structure to fail utterly when certain conditions are met.

The mind-blowing part was finding out that after all these years, we have been watching the footage of this catastrophe too fast!! It turns out that when the amateur film footage was copied and replicated by the news agencies, they transferred it at the frame rate (24fps) used in the film and professional news agencies, rather than what the camera shot at, which was 16fps! There were engineers at the site of the collapse that were measuring the frequency of the oscillation, and they clocked it at 12 cycles per minute. That means the period for one cycle of the sway would be five seconds. However, if you take a stopwatch to the film footage, it clocks in at around 3.2 seconds. Way too fast!

So of course, now I need to find some footage and slow it down in my software--just so I can get an idea of what it actually looked like on that day--75 years ago to this day...

Well, that is about it for me here. I've just been working on my web site and other promotional materials, while getting ready for the next project coming up. And then comes the holidays--it will be a true test of my willpower to see if I can stick with my diet throughout!

Have a great week, everyone!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. It has been pretty quiet around here--less photograffin, and more workin. So I'm just hanging around watching fun stuff on the Telly. It was certainly fun watching all the Halloween movies around that holiday. I have to say, I do enjoy a chance to get skeered from time to time! It really gets my little heart pumping. And I like the fact that I know it is just a Hollywood kind of scary. That is exciting, but still less dangerous than some other forms of skeery that I know of. And of course, I'm talking about the "run for your life because a big bird with sharp talons is bearing down on you" kind of skeery.

Nope. I'll take a good ghost story or zombie movie any time! And of course, I like vampire movies--because most of those guys are distant cousins of mine. I like to see how the other half lives. Or more to wit--how they live on the other half of the World!

Just looking forward to Thanksgiving coming up later in the month. This year should be interesting, because the Dude is on this diet his doctor put him on. Basically that means he has to eat smaller portions of the food. And I know what that means--more turkey for ME!!! Oh, and yummy yams!

Ooo--just thinking of that made my tummy gurgle. I think I'll go see what is in the refrigerator, and maybe turn the football game on. The 49ers have been doing so badly that the coach has benched their quarterback and brought some new guy in. I think he was formerly with the janitorial staff. Or maybe it was the food truck. Anyway, I've never heard of him. So I guess I'll go see how he's doing on his first week in the big leagues!

Have a great week, Everbuddy!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Gumbo

  Ingredients:
  1 rotisserie chicken
2 pounds shrimp
2 pounds smoked sausage
3 sweet peppers
3 ribs celery
3 onions, divided
3 garlic cloves, minced
4 sticks butter, divided*
1½ cups unbleached flour
4 cups chicken broth or base
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons Creole or Cajun seasoning
½ teaspoon dried thyme
1 bag frozen okra
Hot pepper sauce, to taste

  Directions:
Remove all chicken from the bones, tear into small pieces and set aside.

Peel, tail and de-vein shrimp. Sauté in a 2 tablespoons butter and 1 clove (½ teaspoon minced) garlic. Set aside with chicken.

Slice sausage about ¼-½-inch thick. Sauté in 2 tablespoons butter. Set aside with chicken and shrimp.

Chop peppers, celery, two onions, and remaining garlic. Sauté in 4 tablespoons butter until tender. Set aside with meat.

Now to make a good dark brown gumbo roux. Melt 3 sticks butter in a heavy bottomed skillet (cast iron is best) over medium to medium high heat. Slowly sprinkle in the flour a little at a time, stirring constantly. Continue to stir constantly. Do NOT walk away! If you burn it even the tiniest bit, it is unusable. You will notice the flour beginning to brown. The darker the roux, the darker the gravy. For gumbo, when the roux reaches a deep dark chocolate brown color it is done. Reduce heat, add one chopped onion and stir until onion is tender.

Add broth, seasonings, meat and cooked veggies. Stir in okra. Cook on low heat for about 1 hour.

Serve over hot rice, quinoa or barley.

*You can substitute other fats (oil or lard) for some or all of the butter.

Cream Cheese Danish

  Ingredients:

2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated crescent rolls
1 large egg, separated
2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup chopped pecans or slivered almonds
Sifted powdered sugar

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Unroll 1 can of rolls; press into a lightly greased 9-x13-inch pan.

Beat egg yolk, cream cheese, and next 3 ingredients at medium speed with an electric beater until blended; spread over dough in pan.

Unroll remaining can of crescent rolls on a sheet of wax paper; press into a 9-x13-inch rectangle. Place over cream cheese mixture. Whisk egg white; brush over dough. Sprinkle with pecans.

Bake 25 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, and cool in pan on a wire rack. Cut into squares.

The Start of the Blues

This is supposed to be the ONLY time Carson sang in public!

This show is at Kiel Opera House in St Louis in June, 1965 when Johnny Carson hosted the Tonight Show.

The Rat Pack were playing Vegas, but visited Carson for this wonderfully entertaining performance.

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Johnny Carson, and to top it off

Quincy Jones was conducting the Count Basie band, and he is visible in the background.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of shots that came out pretty well from this morning's photo session.

I think the one of the red-tailed hawk came out very nicely.

You can really see him looking down at me and checking me out! (Luckily I didn't look all that tasty...)

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

These are a couple of new friends we met on our vacation.
This copperhead was on one of the trails at Myrtle Beach State Park.
We went into the woods to avoid him.
After this encounter Mr. Sharoot made me go first…

This guy blocked another of our paths at Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge.

I made Mr. Sharoot go first as we went WAY around him.

I think he was giving us the stink eye.

What do you call a cow jumping over a barbed-wire fence?
An udder disaster!

"Oh, mamma," questioned the child, "Who's that?" He pointed to a nun who was passing. "A Sister of Charity," was the answer. "Which one," the boy persisted, "Faith or Hope?"

Tonight, as I was coming home, I came to a four way stop.

I was about to proceed across the intersection when I heard a siren. I waited for an ambulance to pass by in front of me on the cross street.

Just about the time he entered the intersection, the car on the opposite side of the intersection from me became impatient and started out into the intersection right in front of the ambulance.

Well the ambulance swerved violently just missing the impatient idiot who pulled out in front of him.

But when the ambulance swerved their back door flew open, and a box dropped out on the street.

Well I was the only one left in the intersection. Thinking the box might have been important I put my car in Park and walked out into the intersection to retrieve the box. I thought I might be able to get it to the ambulance somehow.

It was kind of heavy. I had no idea what was inside.

On the way back to my car I opened the box.

My mouth must of dropped open in amazement. Inside the box was somebody’s big toe packed in ice.

Oh my goodness! I thought!!! The guy who this belongs to must be in that ambulance that just went buy.

Quick as a flash I formulated an action plan.

What did I do then you might ask?

Well I did what any responsible adult would do. I called a toe truck!

MANQUÉ

Pronunciation:  \mahng-KAY\

adjective

Definition of MANQUÉ

short of or frustrated in the fulfillment of one's aspirations or talents—used postpositively

EXAMPLES

Natalie is an actress manqué who moved to New York 10 years ago and is still looking for her first big break.

"At the center of the author's examination is Alexander Popper, a fiction writer manqué …

reluctant law-school graduate who winds up handling misdemeanor cases for the

Cook County Public Defender."

— The Austin (Texas) American-Statesman, 27 Nov. 2011

DID YOU KNOW?

The etymology of manqué is likely to vex left-handers. English speakers picked up manqué

directly from French more than two centuries ago, and it ultimately comes from Latin mancus,

meaning "having a crippled hand." But in between the Latin and French portions of this word's

history came the Italian word manco, which means both "lacking" and "left-handed." Lefties may

be further displeased to learn that manqué isn't the only English word with a history that links

left-handedness with something undesirable. For example, the word awkward comes from awke,

a Middle English word meaning both "turned the wrong way" and "left-handed." And the noun gawk

("a clumsy stupid person") probably comes from a gawk that means "left-handed" in dialectal English.

Test Your Vocabulary:

Unscramble the letters to create an adjective that can mean "of, relating to, or situated to the left" or "evil":

NTIESSIR

The answer is …

SINISTER
