Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Well, I was out for a little hike to get some photos at Pena Adobe park this morning, and I got rained out! It had been so long since we had seen rain around here, I just didn't expect that it would actually happen. Then the funny thing is, I got back to my car and began to leave, and I had to look in four places for the switch to turn my windshield wipers on. I had forgotten how to work them! That's when you know that a drought is bad.

I didn't get a chance to go out to Folsom lake last week, so I'm hoping to be able to steal away for a day sometime this week. Too many more rainstorms, and the lake is going to start filling back up--I want to try to catch it when it is at or near its lowest point of the season.

How about them Royals!?! They stand just one game away from bringing the pennant to Kansas City. I know Dot, TDB, and Chatterchopz are very excited...but let's not jinx anything. They still have to win one more game. My friends Stave and Pam are really excited--they moved from California to KC a few years back. Pam is originally from KC, and a life-long Royals fan.

Then there's the 49ers football team. Er...never mind.

There was an asteroid that passed us by on Halloween. Everybody talks about how it looked like an eerie skull. I don't quite see it, but everybody seems to see what they want to see.

We spent our Halloween night going out to see the movie "The Martian." That was quite a ride! The science was a little better (and therefore less distracting) than on "Gravity," Both Mary and I really enjoyed the film. And it had been quite a while since we had made it out to see a movie. We went to Denny's afterward to have their pumpkin-pecan pancakes. Not diet-safe, but YUM!! I figure an occasional splurge is okay. The big test is going to be the upcoming holidays!

Well, Sunday progresses, and I need to start getting ready for the broadcast tonight. I hope Ustream cooperates tonight! Hope to see you there...
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. Yes, it has finally rained a few drops. But so far, only a few drops. Oh, if only we could send some of those rainclouds that are hitting Texas right now--and send them out west.

Oh, but I do love the rain. I love the way it pitter-patters on the windows of my little bachelor apartment in the backyard of the Dude's house. (Emphasis on the word "little.") It brings the promise of making everything green again.

Watching all of this baseball is making me hungry for BBQ food. There's nothing quite like that Kansas City BBQ style. MMMMmmmmm. Maybe if the Royals win the World Series, we'll try to get ahold of some burnt ends from somewhere. Actually, the Dude could probably make some. Like when he starts the grill and puts the food on, and then gets wrapped up in watching "Jeopardy." Then we have burnt EVERYTHING!

Well, it is time to start getting ready for the StoryTime, and the broadcast tonight! Hope to see you there!!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Cheesy Potato and Kielbasa Casserole

  Ingredients:
3 cups russet or gold potatoes, cut into cubes and boiled
3 cups sweet potatoes, peeled, cut into cubes and boiled
1 large onion, cut into large chunks
6 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons flour
3 cups milk
¾ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
1 pound Velveeta (or Cheddar) cheese, diced
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
2 pounds kielbasa or other smoked sausage
½ teaspoon paprika

  Directions:
Cut sausage in half, lengthwise, and then slice into ½-inch "half moon" cuts. Cook sausage and onion in a frying pan for about 15 minutes, turning frequently to SLIGHTLY brown.

Meanwhile, put cooked and diced potatoes in baking dish. Add cooked meat and onion and give it all a gentle toss.

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour. Cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Stir in milk, salt and pepper. When hot, add Velveeta. Cook until warm, melted and smooth. (Use a whisk and stir constantly.).

Pour sauce over potatoes and meat. Sprinkle shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top, and then sprinkle paprika evenly over the top.

Bake in preheated 350°F oven for 35-45 minutes (watch carefully), until golden brown on top).

Don't Ask, Don't Tell Cookies

Modified from Cream Puff Murder by Joanne Fluke
  Ingredients:

Cookies:

1 cup (2 sticks) softened butter
   3 cups white granulated sugar
   4 large eggs, beaten
   2 teaspoons vanilla extract
   1 cup cocoa powder
   1 teaspoon baking soda
   1 cup buttermilk
5 cups flour (pack it down when you measure it)
2 cups chopped (drained and rinsed) sauerkraut (14.5 oz. can)

Mocha Frosting:

½ cup (1 stick) softened butter
   1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
4-6 teaspoons very strongly brewed coffee
   3-3½ cups powdered (confectioner's) sugar

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F, rack in the middle position.

Prepare the sauerkraut by rinsing it off in cold water under the faucet, and draining it in a sieve or colander. Rinsing is very important. Make sure you rinse it well.

Beat the softened butter with the sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. Add the beaten eggs and mix them in thoroughly.

Mix in the vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and baking soda. Stir (or beat on low speed - this is much easier to make using a mixer) until everything is well incorporated.

Add half the buttermilk (½ cup) and half the flour (2½ cups). Beat until smooth.

Add the remaining half of the buttermilk and flour. Beat until smooth.

Dump the sauerkraut on a cutting board, and chop it finely with a knife. (You can also chop it in a food processor, using the steel blade and a pulsing motion.) It's very important to chop it up into tiny little pieces.

Measure one cup of sauerkraut, packing it down in the cup. Pat the sauerkraut dry with paper towels, and add to the cookie dough, stirring by hand (if using a mixer, the sauerkraut tends to wrap itself around the beaters). Stir it in thoroughly.

Drop dough by heaping teaspoons onto greased or sprayed cookie sheets, 12 cookies per standard-size sheet.

Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes. Place pan on wire rack, cook for 1 minute, then transfer the cookies to the wire rack to cool.

When cool, frost with Mocha icing.

Mocha Icing

Melt the chocolate chips with 4 tsp of the coffee in a microwave-safe bowl for 1 minute on HIGH. Stir, and if the mixture is still lumpy, remove the spoon and microwave for an additional 20 seconds. If the mixture is still lumpy, repeat again, stirring after each 20-second interval. When you are able to stir the mixture smooth, set the bowl on the counter to cool to room temperature.

Once the mixture has cooled to room temperature, stir in the softened butter until smooth. Whisk in the powdered sugar and stir until the mixture is of spreading consistency. If it's too thick, add the remaining 2 tsp coffee. If it's too thin, all a little more powdered sugar.

Frost the cookies and sprinkle on a little shredded coconut or cocoa powder.

If you're too tired to frost the cookies, just sprinkle with a little powdered sugar and pop half a maraschino cherry on top!

The Start of the Blues

This is supposed to be the ONLY time Carson sang in public!

This show is at Kiel Opera House in St Louis in June, 1965 when Johnny Carson hosted the Tonight Show.

The Rat Pack were playing Vegas, but visited Carson for this wonderfully entertaining performance.

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Johnny Carson, and to top it off

Quincy Jones was conducting the Count Basie band, and he is visible in the background.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of shots that came out pretty well from this morning's photo session.

I think the one of the red-tailed hawk came out very nicely.

You can really see him looking down at me and checking me out! (Luckily I didn't look all that tasty...)

Huntington beach state park 2 weeks ago, this hungry Stork found an eel snack.  nom, nom, nom, burp!

And his buddies are trolling for an eel or two of their own.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

Why don't mummies take vacations?
They're afraid they'll relax and unwind.

A dog thinks: "Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me. They must be Gods!" A cat thinks: "Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me. I must be a God!"

Did you hear about the skunk family in church that refused to sit by anyone?
They like to sit in their own pew.

A mother took her daughter shopping for a witch outfit to wear at the school Halloween costume party. They hunted in several shops for an important accessory--an old-fashioned straw broom with a crooked tree-branch handle. Finally Mom found one that was just right. "See?" she asked her daughter. "This will be perfect for you to take to school." The youngster eyed the broom for a moment and frowned. "Aw, Mom," she replied, "can't you just drive me instead?

My friend was standing in front of a soda machine saying, "You are a dumb looking button." "You don't have much of a future, either." "People are going to be punching you all your life." "You are a natural loser!" "Soon you are going to be replaced by a much better looking button." I foolishly asked her why she was talking to the soda machine. She pointed to the notice on the front of the machine, which said, "Depress button for ice."

XERIC

Pronunciation:  \ZEER-ik\

adjective

Definition of XERIC

characterized by, relating to, or requiring only a small amount of moisture

EXAMPLES

She is a botanist who primarily studies deserts and xeric shrublands.

"As water restrictions were enacted through the metro area, the Kentucky bluegrass in

other parts of the park dried up, while the three display beds filled with xeric

varieties that don't take much water flourished."

— Austin Briggs, The Denver Post, 6 Aug. 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

By the late 1800s, botanists were using the terms xerophyte and xerophytic for plants that were well adapted for survival in dry environments. But some felt the need for a more generic word that included both animals and plants. In 1926 a group proposed using xeric (derived from xēros, the Greek word for "dry") as a more generalized term for either flora or fauna. They further suggested that "xerophytic … be entirely abandoned as useless and misleading." Not everyone liked the idea. In fact, the Ecological Society of America stated that xeric was "not desirable," preferring terms such as arid. Others declared that xeric should refer only to habitats, not to organisms. Scientists used it anyway, and by the 1940s xeric was well documented in scientific literature.

Name That Antonym:

What 6-letter word beginning with "h" is an antonym of xeric?

The answer is …
