Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Sunday to y'all! I'm a little late getting a note in today, because I went out to Lagoon Valley park to hike up to the ridge. I got out there at 6:30am, when it was still quite dark. We hiked up to the ridgeline to catch the sunrise, but it was pretty overcast and never got to see the sunrise. However, the clouds parted around 9am, so I got some nice sunny shots. I had never hiked up to the ridge before--the views from up there are quite stunning. I definitely want to hike up there again in the spring, after all the grass becomes green again. But there's just something about oak trees and that dry brown grass--has a beauty all its own. Saw some great birds out there, too. A lot of turkey vultures and red-tailed hawks.

This last week was a kind of between-week, as I had finished one project and I have another one coming up but not for a week or so. So I've been working on some of my promotional materials and trying to get my website updated.

Aside from that, not much is new here. And I desperately need a nap, because I am really tuckered out from all that hiking! Anyway, we'll see you all next weekend because it will be the first Sunday of November, so it's VacaChat time! Until then, have a great week!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

  Littleguys  UPDATE: (as of 10/25/2015)
Amazing what an injection in the right place can accomplish! My back started really hurting over two years ago, to the point I couldn't show my horses "in hand" when I would have to walk beside them, etc, and it was painful to lean over to harness them. I was diagnosed with sciatica, meaning the hole in the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve leaves the spine to go to the left leg was filling up with arthritis.

But the doctors wouldn't fix it in 2014 because the Stage Zero Breast Cancer was more important. In 2015, cancer free, it was time to fix the back. I did get that injection for the sciatica last summer, and some relief, but that doctor told me something no other doctor had told me. Half of the pain I was experiencing as I walked, stood, etc was due to the sacroiliac joint where the spine meets the left side of the pelvis. Got a shot, well, three right in that joint Thursday and cannot believe how much better it is to walk and stand. Why couldn't they do that two years ago???  Not a magic wand, but so much better,

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. Well, I was a little cheesed with the Dude for not taking me with him this morning on his little nature/photography hike. But then again, it meant I didn't have to get up at 6am, so I got to sleep in. Also, I was looking at some of the photos he took, and a lot of them were of big birds soaring over the crest of the hills. Apparently they soared and soared, riding the thermals and winds rushing up the slopes of the hills, and they hovered for long periods of time. It was as if they were up there scanning over the terrain...looking for something. Then every now and then, they would tuck their wings in and swoop down. I wonder if they...oh my Gosh!!! They were hunting for breakfast!!
So I guess it is just as well that I didn't go out there--I might have had a mishap! I don't mind it when people invite me over for breakfast--just so long as I am not the breakfast!!

Anyhoo--we shall see you all next week for StoryTime!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Philly Cheese Meatloaf

  Ingredients:
  2 medium onions, chopped
2 green bell pepper, chopped
2 tablespoon oil
1 pound ground meat (beef or turkey)
½ cup bread crumbs
1 egg
Several dashes salt and pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
6 slices provolone cheese

  Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a skillet, sauté the onion and pepper in the oil until tender. Combine half of these veggies with the remaining ingredients (except the cheese) in a bowl. Place half of this mixture into a greased loaf pan and top with half of the remaining onion/pepper mixture and 3 of the slices of provolone cheese. Repeat so you have two meat-veggie-cheese layers.

Bake for 45 minutes (the internal temperature of the meat should reach 165°F). Allow the meatloaf to sit for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Garlic Asparagus

  Ingredients:

1½ pounds fresh asparagus spears
2-3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
½-1 cup shredded fresh Parmesan or Cheddar cheese (optional)

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 450°F. Snap off and discard woody bases from asparagus. Place asparagus and garlic in a 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Toss to coat.

Roast for 10 to 15 minutes or until asparagus is crisp-tender, stirring once halfway through roasting. If using cheese, sprinkle cheese over asparagus after about 10 minutes of roasting and return to the oven to finish. Serve immediately.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of shots that came out pretty well from this morning's photo session.

I think the one of the red-tailed hawk came out very nicely.

You can really see him looking down at me and checking me out! (Luckily I didn't look all that tasty...)

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

We got home last night and are just beginning to look through our photos.
The first two are of a little murmuration of tree swallows.  There were thousands
of them flying like waves in the sky.  Amazing.  The photos don’t do it justice.

A little boy had been pawing over the stock of greeting cards at a stationery store. After a few minutes the clerk became curious and asked, "Just what is it you're looking for, sonny? Birthday greeting? Message to a sick friend? Anniversary congratulations to your mom and dad?" The boy shook his head and said, "No." "Then what kind of card is it that you want?" asked the clerk. The boy answered wistfully, "Got anything in the way of blank report cards?"

One day a poppa dog had the job of looking after his young puppy while mommy went off shopping.

He had his heart set on going to the dog show that day so asked his young son if he would like to go along.

Of course that sounded exciting to the little puppy so he agreed.

While there the poppa dog entered himself in the show. Lo and behold, he came away with the blue ribbon for 'Best of Show'.

On the way home he suggested to his son that they stop by the local pub to celebrate with a beer or two. The puppy drank sodas while his father had several beers.

When they got home poppa realized that they had left the ribbon on the bar.

The puppy said, "You've had enough to drink already, Pop. I'll run back for it."

When he climbed up onto the bar stool the bartender asked, "What'll you have young man?"

The puppy replied, "I'll have Pap's Blue Ribbon, please!"

A Grandmother was surprised by her 7 year old grandson one morning when he had made her coffee. She drank what was the worst cup of coffee in her life. When she got to the bottom there were three of those little green army men in the cup. She said, "Honey, what are the army men doing in my coffee?" Her grandson said, "Grandma, it says on TV-'The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup!'"

HAPLOLOGY

Pronunciation:  \hap-LAH-luh-jee\

noun

Definition of HAPLOLOGY

contraction of a word by omission of one or more similar sounds or syllables

EXAMPLES

The speech therapist assured the child's parents that "the tendency towards haplology will likely correct itself with age."

"Haplology is responsible for a variety of forms found in rapid speech in English: not just probly,

but also libry (library), nesry (necessary), interpretive (interpretative), and others." —

 Gretchen McCulloch, Slate.com, 4 Apr. 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

Try to say "pierced-ear earrings" three times fast. That exercise will demonstrate why haplology happens:

sometimes it's just easier to drop a syllable and leave yourself with something that's easier to say

(such as "pierced earrings"). American philologist Maurice Bloomfield recognized the tendency to drop

one of a pair of similar syllables over 120 years ago. He has been credited with joining the combining

form hapl- or haplo- (meaning "single") with -logy (meaning "oral or written expression") to create

haplology as a name for the phenomenon. Haplology is quite common in English, and often the contracted

forms it generates spread into the written language. In fact, haplology played a role in naming the

nation that is the cradle of English: England was condensed via haplology from "Engla land."
