Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Our Furred, Feathered, and Scaled Babies
We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Another week has zoomed by. It was a real blur for me because I was cranking on some work projects and even having to work through the night on some of them. So I don't know what day it is! All I do know is that doing all-nighters was a lot easier when I was in my 20s.

This weekend I have been working on a car with an engine inside (not real--just in my 3D program). You don't really appreciate just how many parts are in a car engine until you try to build one out of thin air. This is for a trade show that is happening in Japan this week, so the video has to be delivered in time for it to play on Thursday. Lots of pressure!

Then there is another project with the same studio that starts on Tuesday. So I have a slight overlap here. I'm hoping I can get through this.

All this means I have not had time to go take many photos lately, so I'm really missing my shooting time! I would love to take a day and go hiking out at Folsom Lake on the other side of Sacramento. It is at 17% capacity again, which is where it was at back in January 2014, when my sister and I went hiking out there. It was fascinating to walk around and see the old foundations for buildings from the Gold Rush mining town of Mormon Island. It was one of the towns that was flooded when the dam was built back in 1955. Going out there when it is this low is just like being at an archaeological site!

Speaking of photos, I managed to win the photo club's assignment of the month for the first time this week! Every month, we choose a topic for shooting. It is typically themes like "night photography," "close-ups," "the color red," etc. This last month's was "the seven deadly sins." It was my suggestion. I thought it would be a good challenge. What I didn't realize was just HOW big a challenge it would present. I racked my brains all month trying to figure out how to depict the concepts of the seven deadly sins. Finally, on the day that the photos were due, I got desperate. I decided to take some of my old Star Wars action figures and pose them in such a way as to demonstrate the seven deadlies. I thought the whole thing came out rather well, in an amusing way--but everybody's clear favorite was gluttony. Everybody got a good laugh at my Obi-Wan Kenobi character climbing fully inside of a bag of peanut M&Ms. So my grand prize was bragging rights and my photo gracing the club's Facebook Page cover. (Heh-heh!!)

Well, not much more has been happening around here, and I have to get back to finishing my engine for a 2006 Pontiac GTO. Vroom vroom! (And now, Zorro--you can't ride in it! It doesn't really exist!)
Cheers, VacaDude

ChatterChopz CC has reached the end of another very successful and exceedingly fun birthday season (except for that one little mishap while leaving Minneapolis). Yesterday was the annual party that she holds each year, mostly for the very special little ones in her life. This year, she hosted about 15 at her karate dojo. Guests ranged in age from 15 months to 83 years. It was an incredible gathering and so much fun. (But, like crazy people, Mom and Dad forgot the camera so we don't have much of a record of it.) We're going to try to get photos from some who attended.

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list, so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us, "Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Guess what--the Dude is building me a car!! It is a 2006 Pontiac GTO...I am going to be the fastest, coolest mouse around! I am going to park it out front of my bachelor pad apartment, and I will be the envy of the neighborhood. Just wait until Zorrino feasts her peepers on the site of me driving around in such a spiffy car!

The Dude keeps trying to tell me something about how it is just 3D, it is only imaginary, and blah blah blah. Hey, I've got a great imagination! It works for me... (I wonder what kind of stereo system to install in it??)

And besides, he can just send the car to the 3D printer. If he scales it up, he can print himself one too! That would be fun--to have matching sports cars, and we can cruise around the town and make everybody's heads turn.

Well, not much else going on around here. Just waiting to see who the 49ers football team is going to lose to THIS week. ::sigh::

We'll talk to you again soon!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Pumpkin Vertuta

A traditional Eastern European pastry roll that originated in Moldova.

  Ingredients:
  1 cup warm milk (100-110°F)
1 tablespoon butter
1-2 tablespoons sugar
Pinch of salt
2 cups all purpose flour plus extra for rolling and dusting
1 egg yolk

For the filling:
Half pumpkin* , around 400-500 grams or 2-3 cups shredded
   4-6 tablespoons sugar
   1-2 teaspoons of cinnamon
1 teaspoon all spice ( optional)
   ½ cup raisins ( optional)
   Icing sugar ( decoration)

  Directions:
Peel and deseed your pumpkin. Grate it by hand or in your food processor.

Separate your egg white from your egg yolk.

Into a bowl, add the warm milk, butter, and egg yolk. Mix well, add sugar and salt and mix again. Then add flour and keep mixing until the dough is nice and soft. It might take 8-10 min. Place the dough into the refrigerator to rest for 30 minutes.

In a different bowl mix the sugar and cinnamon (and additional spices if desired).

Add flour onto your flat surface, roll out the dough until its very thin and large rectangular shape.

Spread the pumpkin all over the dough, leaving the edges clear. Sprinkle with sugar and spice mix. You could also add raisins if you want it sweeter. Then start rolling it from one long side.

Roll into a snail shape. Cut a few small slits around the outside edges. Use butter, oil or egg wash to coat your pumpkin pie. Then sprinkle some icing sugar on top and bake at 320°F or 170°C for 55-65 minutes until nice and golden.

Let it cool down and then sprinkle with more icing sugar and serve with caramel sauce or ice cream. Enjoy!

*Make sure you get a pumpkin bred for cooking, not the traditional Jack-o-lantern type of pumpkin. They are usually labeled “pie pumpkin”.

Teriyaki Beef Soup

  Ingredients:

8 ounces boneless beef sirloin steak
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 large shallot, cut into thin rings
4 cups water
1 cup unsweetened apple juice
2 carrots, cut into matchstick strips (1 cup)
⅓ cup long-grain rice
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
½ teaspoon instant beef bouillon granules
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups coarsely chopped broccoli
1-2 tablespoons reduced-sodium teriyaki sauce
1 tablespoon dry sherry (optional)

  Directions:
Trim fat from beef. Cut beef into bite-size strips. In a large saucepan heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef and shallot in hot oil for 2 to 3 minutes or until beef is brown. Remove beef mixture with a slotted spoon; set aside.

In the same saucepan combine water, apple juice, carrots, uncooked rice, ginger, bouillon granules, and garlic. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, about 15 minutes or until the carrots are tender.

Stir in the broccoli and beef mixture. Simmer, covered, for 3 minutes. Stir in the teriyaki sauce and, if desired, the dry sherry.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of photos that I took yesterday. It is the trunk of a eucalyptus tree--I had no

idea they would display so many colors like that! And I swear in the vertical one, the surface

looks like paintbrush stokes--like Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." That same kind of impasto technique...

I just thought it looked very pretty.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

This is a Long Billed Curlew (very appropriately named, don’t you think!)
This bird has the longest bill for body size of all birds.
We saw him in Eureka, CA on the Elk River Hikshari Trail.

Also seen on the Trail, but we had one who hung out by our hotel room

and sang to us every morning and every night during our stay in Eureka, CA.

This is a White-Crowned Sparrow.

Two's company, three's a cloud.

Teacher: "Kids, what does the chicken give you?"
Student: "Meat!"
Teacher: "Very good! Now what does the pig give you?"
Student: "Bacon!"
Teacher: "Great! And what does the fat cow give you?"
Student: "Homework!"

Why do jack-o-lanterns have stupid smiles on their faces?
You'd have a stupid smile, too, if you had just had all your brains scooped out!

A waitress became violently ill while at work and was rushed by ambulance to the emergency room. In typical hospital fashion, she was placed on an examining table and then all but ignored for the next half-hour.

Finally, she noticed a doctor out in the hall and yelled, "Please help me!"

"Sorry," he replied, "it's not my table."

ANASTROPHE

Pronunciation:  \uh-NASS-truh-fee\

noun

Definition of ANASTROPHE

inversion of the usual syntactical order of words for rhetorical effect

EXAMPLES

My father was fond of word play, especially anastrophe, when he talked to my sister and me

about things we would rather not talk about; he would say things like

"Tired you are not but to bed you must go."

"Should you buy 'Farnsworth's Classical English Rhetoric'? If you're at all interested in the techniques

of writing, yes. At the very least, you'll learn that that last sentence, with its inversion of the

usual word order —'yes' at the end instead of the beginning of the

sentence—is an instance of anastrophe."

 — Michael Dirda, Washington Post, May 5, 2011

DID YOU KNOW?

"Powerful you have become Dooku, the dark side I sense in you." Fans of Star Wars will recognize

Yoda's line in Attack of the Clones. Others might guess that Yoda is the speaker because of the

unconventional syntax that is the hallmark of Yoda's speech. (In typical Yoda fashion, the subject

is second instead of first in both clauses—it follows a predicate adjective and the direct object,

respectively.) The name for this kind of syntactical inversion is anastrophe, from the Greek verb

anastrephein, meaning "to turn back." President John F. Kennedy employed anastrophe for rhetorical

effect when he inverted the typical positive-to-negative parallelism in his famous line "Ask not what

your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country." In poetry, anastrophe is often

used to create rhythm, as in these lines from Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky": "

So rested he by the Tumtum tree,

And stood awhile in thought."
