Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Our Furred, Feathered, and Scaled Babies
We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Can't believe it is October already. Before you know it, the big holidays will be upon us. That is going to be a true test of my diet--to see how well I make it through the holiday meals. My plan is to go ahead and do the usual things, but just keep my portion sizes down (we already tend to use low fat ingredients wherever possible). So far in the first month I have lost nearly ten pounds. I know a lot of that is low-hanging fruit, and that further loss will be harder to come by, but I see it as a start. Just last week I got hooked up to an EKG, and earlier in September I had my first ever ultrasound to check for stones. I also asked them to let me know if they saw any form of symbiotic, alien life-forms in there. The female lab technician never emitted a scream and ran from the room, so I guess I'm clean. (Though I am a bit disappointed to lose that as an excuse for not getting my chores done.)

Things have really picked up for me work-wise. I am now juggling two projects for Mahalo Digital, and those tend to be pretty labor intensive, so I'm going to have my hands full for the rest of the month. They tend to pay pretty well, so this should be a big help to the finances...eventually (they have the longest pay period of any of my clients. Net-90. Which means, I have to think about this as a Christmas bonus, and still come up with cash to live on in the short-term.)

Last week's lunar eclipse certainly did not disappoint. We had some low clouds, so I missed some planned photo opportunities, but once it did rise above the clouds it was quite spectacular.

Then last night we were treated to a different kind of show in the night sky--an amazing lightning display to the east of us. I walked outside around 2am and watched for a while. In this part of California, lightning is fairly rare--about one good storm per year. I know a lot of folks back east or in the midwest are more accustomed to it, but for me it is a rare treat. (And of course, I know the folks on the east coast are getting walloped, so that's not going to be fun for anyone. Stay safe out there!)

Speaking of photography, I have recently been interested in using the old TLR camera to try some night photography, and in particular--to capture some urban scenes. People hanging out in front of bars and such. However, my shyness and aversion to getting mugged makes me uncomfortable with setting up a tripod on the sidewalk, taking light meter readings, and taking the time exposures. So I've been experimenting with a wooden platform that I made for my passenger seats (works in the front AND the back seats), and parking the car in such a way that I can take the time exposures out the window. Then when I get my settings right, I just roll the window down, shoot, and then drive away--without ever having to leave the safety of the car! I have been hearing about so many muggings involving camera gear (especially in San Francisco) even during the daytime...I guess this is my attempt to adapt.

In a way, it saddens me to think I have to take such measures. But I guess that is just the reality of the world these days. I think you have to be a little bit paranoid when you are in public. Just enough so that you never lose awareness of your surroundings. So many kids tend to zone-out when they are texting or listening to music. Makes them easy targets for thieves. And worse--as we saw at the Umpqua college in Oregon.

Well, I've got a busy day ahead, and part of that is going to be getting ready for the broadcast tonight. I do hope I will have time to try some test broadcasts. I'm getting pretty tired of all the technical glitches, so hopefully I can test to see if all my software is up to date. So until then...
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

I hope y'all have had a nice week. Things have been pretty slow around here for me, what with the Dude working his fanny off on his mahaloes. He is on the computer so much, I don't get much time to check out the web sites I like to peruse. Especially since Track & Field magazine went fully online. I know not many people know it, but I tend to follow along with that. Back in San Marcos, there were lots of fields that I would hang out in, and with all those owls, I had to be a pretty good runner! But I don't get much computer time now, so I'm a bit behind on my reading.

And of course, most of the running I do now involves sprinting to the refrigerator and trying to get there before Rocky does and eats all the yummies!

Last week's lunar eclipse was fun. We went driving all over the county looking for a place that the Dude could shoot pictures from, but we ended up on a dead-end street in Dixon. It ended at a field, so I got a chance to get out of the car and run around in the field. It was just like old times! But I could hear the swishing above--I think they have just as many barn owls in Dixon as they did in San Marcos, so I didn't stay out there for too long. But it sure was a pretty Moon! And although I now know that the Moon is not made of cheese, it is still a good excuse to stop off on the way home and pick up some gouda.

Well, tonight is another installment of the VacaChat, so I need to go about and ready myself for the StoryTime! Have a great day, everbuddy--and we'll see you then!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown steaks on each side. Place steaks in slow cooker.

Deglaze the skillet with the ½ cup of water, scraping up all the browned bits in the pan. Add this to the soup mixture and stir well to combine. Pour over the steaks in the slow cooker.

2 bananas, sliced
½ cup chopped walnuts, toasted

  Heat oven to 350°F.

Spray 10-cup tube pan or 12-cup fluted tube pan with cooking spray. Beat eggs, cake mix, sour cream, oil, water and dry pudding mix in large bowl with mixer until blended.

Cook butter and brown sugar in small saucepan on medium-low heat until butter is melted and mixture is well blended, stirring occasionally. Add bananas; cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in nuts; pour into prepared pan. Cover with batter.

Bake 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on wire rack 10 minutes. Run knife or metal spatula around rim of pan to loosen cake. Invert cake onto rack; gently remove pan. Cool cake completely.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of photos that I took yesterday. It is the trunk of a eucalyptus tree--I had no

idea they would display so many colors like that! And I swear in the vertical one, the surface

looks like paintbrush stokes--like Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." That same kind of impasto technique...

I just thought it looked very pretty.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

This is a Long Billed Curlew (very appropriately named, don’t you think!)
This bird has the longest bill for body size of all birds.
We saw him in Eureka, CA on the Elk River Hikshari Trail.

Also seen on the Trail, but we had one who hung out by our hotel room

and sang to us every morning and every night during our stay in Eureka, CA.

This is a White-Crowned Sparrow.

"Get in the boat!"

We walked into the classroom. Test papers were waiting for us on our desks. The questions were:
#1: What is the most popular type of music downloaded from the iTunes store?
#2: Describe the difference between Coca Cola, Diet Coke, and Coke Zero.
#3: What did George Washington's father say when he caught young George cutting down the cherry tree?
I said to my friend, "Man, I hate these pop quizzes!"

What do you call two men with no arms and no legs who hang by the window?
Curt 'n Rod

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?"

The mother smiled. "I can't dear," she said. 'I have to sleep in Daddy's room."

The little boy replied with a shaking voice, "The big sissy."

INCULCATE

Pronunciation:  \in-KUL-kayt\

verb

Definition of INCULCATE

to teach and impress by frequent repetitions or admonitions

EXAMPLES

Mark and Victoria tried to inculcate in their children the values of hard work,

self-reliance, and respect for other people.

"When Duke went to seven Final Fours over a nine-year span from 1986 through 1994,

the Blue Devils were invariably led by juniors and seniors inculcated in

how Krzyzewski wanted the game played."

— Barry Jacobs, Charlotte (North Carolina) News & Observer, April 10, 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

Inculcate derives from the past participle of the Latin verb inculcare, meaning "to tread on."

In Latin, inculcare possesses both literal and figurative meanings, referring to either the act

of walking over something or to that of impressing something upon the mind, often by way of

steady repetition. It is the figurative sense that survives with inculcate, which was first used in

English in the 16th century. Inculcare was formed in Latin by combining the prefix in- with

calcare, meaning "to trample," and ultimately derives from the noun calx, meaning "heel."

In normal usage inculcate is typically followed by the prepositions in or into, with

the object of the preposition being the person or thing receiving the instruction.

Word Family Quiz:

determined resistance to or defiance of authority:

_ _ c _ _ ci _ r _ n _.
