Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
I can't believe it's nearly the end of the month already. We'll have a new VacaChat coming up next weekend! I hope everybody has been surviving the week okay. A lot of people who had attended the MOD Meet in Minneapolis have been having MOD withdrawals. It sure looks like a lot of fun was had by all! I haven't had a chance to do any more cartoons this week on account of my having to put out a bunch of fires with work and the business, but I'm hoping to crank one out later today.

I am going to do something that I don't often do--and that is to admit defeat on one of my "proof of concept" constructions. The vapor chamber that I thought was going to really make short work of 3D Printer post-processing is just not working at all. I believe I made some bad assumptions about how the acetone vapors work on a given model (I had only tried it one time before launching into building this elaborate chamber). I made a snail's progress on the chamber itself over the course of many months, and now that I got it built and the fan working adequately, I can't get any kind of smoothing to occur. I have left the pieces in the vapor bath for several hours, and nothing. I think I made the chamber too big, not airtight enough, and it is just not getting the saturation of vapors that it needs. So I'm calling it a dud.

So now I need to figure out what to do with this nice box with glass windows. I thought about a bird house, or a bird feeder. Or maybe a submarine for Zorro? I think it would work as a birdhouse if I could just find some birds that are no more than an inch tall. Oh well. It was a learning experience. Especially since I had never cut glass before! So it wasn't a total waste.

Luckily, some new techniques have emerged for cold vapor baths. One involves simply a Rubbermaid food container, some paper towels, and some aluminum foil. I am going to try that next.

It is a big week for space! Tonight is the total lunar eclipse (I am hoping the clouds that are covering the sky right now will clear out of here in time!) Also, NASA is making a big announcement tomorrow about some findings on Mars. The current thinking is that they will announce overwhelming circumstantial evidence of flowing, liquid water on the planet. But the press conference is tomorrow, and I'll be waiting with bells on!

Well, that's about it for life in Vacaville here. Hope to see you next weekend in the chat room!
Cheers, VacaDude

TheDaddyBird, DotRot, ChatterChopz and BugGirl As most of you know, TDB, Dot, CC and Bug were involved in a three car accident as they were leaving Minneapolis following the MODMeet. None of them were injured severely, mostly bumps and bruises (LOTS of bruises). All will be fine. (Although the same cannot be said for BugGirl's car!) Thank you all for your prayers and outpouring of concerns.

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list, so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us, "Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse, here. Well, it looks like I finally get my apartment! I just hope it is not too stinky after all of the acetone vapor thingies. I don't smoke, so at least I don't have to worry about blowing anything up. The Dude was saying the chamber might make a good submarine, if he could just figure a way to make it waterproof. I think that would be pretty kewl! I could putter around at the bottom of the San Francisco Bay looking for shipwrecks filled with treasure. Or at the very least, maybe some containers of cheese that might have fallen off a slow boat from Wisconsin.

It looks like we might be driving to Sacramento tonight. If the weather clears, the Dude wants to see if he can get a picture of the eclipsed moon rising over the Tower Bridge on the Sacramento River. It might make for a pretty neat photo. We'll just have to see about them clouds.

He has been taking the old camera out to shoot black and white photos--lately trying for some shots at night. I like to do that because he lets me hold the shutter release cable. On those night shots I have to hold the shutter open for very long periods of time. I don't wear a watch, so I just count like "one Bachensteiner, two Bachensteiner, three..." I can hold it open for a very long time if I know there is a reward of yummy Bachensteiner Cheese waiting for me afterward!

Well, the days is slipping by and there is so much to do. So we'll see you all next weekend!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Kohl Und Hackfleisch (German Cabbage Casserole)

  Ingredients:

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 pound lean ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon finely minced garlic
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
8 cups chopped cabbage (about 1 head 6 inches across)
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
½ cup sour cream
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
½ cup breadcrumbs

  Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly spray an 8x12-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

In a large skillet, over medium high heat, heat the oil. Add the onion and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and caraway seed and continue to cook and stir for 2 more minutes.

Add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink, breaking up clumps of meat with the back of a spoon. Add the cabbage and cook, stirring, until cabbage is translucent, about 4 minutes.

Off the heat, add the cheese and sour cream, salt and pepper, stirring to combine evenly.

Pour into the prepared bake dish and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Bake for 40 minutes until lightly browned.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Pecan Pie Bars

  Ingredients:

Cookie Crust:
1 cup (2 sticks) margarine, softened
   ½ cup white sugar
   1 cup brown sugar
   2 teaspoons vanilla
   2 eggs
   2¼ cup flour
   1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
Pecan layer:
   4 eggs
   1½ cups light corn syrup
   1½ cups white sugar
   3 tablespoons margarine, melted
   2 teaspoons vanilla
   2½ cups chopped pecans

  Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9x13-inch pan with foil and spray thoroughly with nonstick spray. Set aside.

In a large bowl, stir together flour and baking soda. In the bowl of a mixer, beat margarine, white sugar, and brown sugar on medium until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until fully combined. With the mixer on low, add flour mixture slowly. Stir in chocolate chips. Press dough into prepared pan and bake for about 20-25 minutes or until edges are golden but center is still soft.

In a large bowl, combine eggs, corn syrup, sugar, melted margarine and vanilla and whisk until smooth. Stir in pecans and pour over chocolate chip cookie. Spread evenly and place pan back in the oven for about 25-35 minutes or until pecan mixture is browned and set. Remove from oven and let cool completely. Chill in refrigerator before slicing and serving.

From the Dude

Here are a couple of photos that I took yesterday. It is the trunk of a eucalyptus tree--I had no

idea they would display so many colors like that! And I swear in the vertical one, the surface

looks like paintbrush stokes--like Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." That same kind of impasto technique...

I just thought it looked very pretty.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

This is a Long Billed Curlew (very appropriately named, don’t you think!)
This bird has the longest bill for body size of all birds.
We saw him in Eureka, CA on the Elk River Hikshari Trail.

Also seen on the Trail, but we had one who hung out by our hotel room

and sang to us every morning and every night during our stay in Eureka, CA.

This is a White-Crowned Sparrow.

Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

Why should you always guard your rear while you're in the hospital?
You're in enema territory.

What does a cow say when she has a cold?
Aaaahhh...AAAAhhh....AAAAHHHHMMMMMOOOOO!

A little boy was taken to the dentist. It was discovered that he had a cavity that would have to be filled. "Now, young man," asked the dentist, "what kind of filling would you like for that tooth?" "Chocolate, please," replied the youngster.

Why was there a bug in the computer?
It was looking for a byte to eat.

A man is sitting at home one evening when the doorbell rings.

When he answers the door, a 6 foot tall cockroach is standing there. The cockroach immediately punches him between the eyes and scampers off.

The next evening, the man is sitting at home when the doorbell rings. When he answers the door, the cockroach is there again. This time, it punches him, kicks him and karate chops him before running away.

The third evening, the man is sitting at home when the doorbell rings. When he answers the door, the cockroach is there yet again. It leaps at him and stabs him several times before making off.

The gravely injured man manages to crawl to the telephone and summon an ambulance. He is rushed to intensive care and they save his life.

The next morning, the doctor is doing his rounds. He asks our hero what happened, so the man explains about the 6 foot cockroach's attacks, culminating in the near fatal stabbing.

The doctor thinks for a moment and says, "Yes, there is a nasty bug going around."

PHREAKER

Pronunciation:  \FREE-ker\

noun

Definition of PHREAKER

one who gains illegal access to the telephone system

EXAMPLES

This year's annual conference on culture and technology will focus on the subculture of hackers and phreakers.

"Wire fraud spiked, and the FBI cracked down on phreakers and their blue boxes."

— Jose Pagliery, CNN.com, March 11, 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

Phreakers are people who specialize in attacks on the telephone system.

The word, which became popular in the mid-1980s, is probably a combination of the words phone and freak.

(Phreakers are also known as "phreaks" or "phone phreaks.") In the early days, phreakers whistled or used an instrument to

mimic the tones the phone system then used to route calls and identify payment, especially as a way to avoid paying

for an expensive call. Modern phreaking involves breaking into and manipulating the phone company's

computer system, making it a specialized kind of hacking.
