Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Our Furred, Feathered, and Scaled Babies
We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Welcome to the special midweek edition of the VacaChat newsletter. The schedule is a bit different because Dot was at the MOD Meet in Minnesota with the family and BugGirl. And they had a bit of an "adventure" when beginning the trip home. However, from the stream of photographs of smiling faces coming out of Minneapolis, it seems like everyone had a great time at the Meet!

I did do a Skype session on Friday night, and I broadcast that on the VacaChat channel on Sunday, but unfortunately the software I was using to record it did not pick up my voice. I'm hoping to try to find someone who might have made a video recording of the Skype session, so that I can pull their audio from it.

Last week was a bit of a sad one for me, as a very old friend of mine passed away rather suddenly. He and I were born on the same day, entering this world shoulder-to-shoulder. His Mom and my Mom shared the same hospital room. We were pals from the first day of Kindergarten until we graduated from high school. (Though we had drifted apart a bit about halfway through that period. Different friends, different life choices, etc.) I hadn't seen Dan since the last high school reunion--our 10th, back in 1989. My, how the time flies. Anyway, I went to the funeral on Thursday, and it was good to spend some time with his family and share memories and see folks I hadn't seen for a long time.

It was a lovely day, and the ceremonies were quite moving. At the remembrance, they played Paul Harvey's "So God Made a Farmer" speech. Danny stayed in Wheatland and was a rice farmer (4th generation of farmers for that family). He was very proud of the rice he grew, and in fact we were invited to file past his casket and pour home-grown rice over it before it/he was lowered into the ground. It was so very fitting.

Danny was a very funny kid, and he and I shared a love for spreading joy. In adulthood, he became infamous for his ten-plus minute long stories that would leave everybody with their sides aching. We both loved our practical jokes. I think he and I shared the belief that the world is in infinitely funny place, and if you can't see the humor in it, you're looking at it all wrong. So he had the minister read something at the cemetery that I had never heard before, but it was so lovely and profound--it suited him greatly, and I think it suits me that way as well. So I'd like to share that here:

The Clown's Prayer
As I stumble through this life,
help me to create more laughter than tears,
dispense more cheer than gloom,
spread more cheer than despair.

Never let me become so indifferent,
that I will fail to see the wonders in the eyes of a child,
or the twinkle in the eyes of the aged.

Never let me forget that my total effort is to cheer people,
make them happy, and forget momentarily,
all the unpleasantness in their lives.

And in my final moment,
may I hear You whisper:
"When you made My people smile,
you made Me smile."

So for this clown, the day calls to me with requests for this and that, so I will talk to you all again soon.
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 9/6).

The hearing was held on Thursday morning. Her sister didn't bother to show up and it was found that her sister had withdrawn money from the accounts that she was not to have and that she had not paid the bill for her parents' assisted living.
The guardians ad litem for both parents recommended that the parents be placed in GentleDoe's care in their own home.
This is not a totally done deal but it sounds good. There is another hearing next week that may help Doe get back some of what her sister has take from her and her parents. We'll keep everyone posted. Keep up the prayers!

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list, so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us, "Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.
Shari (no longer in Memphis) (Shari Sides on FB)"

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

I hope y'all are having a good week. Things are going okay here. The Dude was a bit sad last week, but time heals all wounds--as they say. With the passing of time comes healing. And cheese. Thankfully, time brings cheese. Funny how that works.

I am getting very close to finally being able to move into my new apartment with the big, lovely windows. That's because the Dude has so far been unable to get it working as a vapor chamber. I think he is taking it pretty hard. He is used to having his "inventions" more or less work with only a few tweaks, but I think this one has got him flummoxed. It's mostly that dumb fan. Who would have thought that a simple fan would present such an engineering challenge? Actually, I think he should have donated it to the Vatican--it could serve as the new Popemobile as he begins his tour in the United States! Just slap some wheels on it...

At least if I do get to use it for an apartment, I won't need to fumigate any time soon--with all the acetone vapors that have been circulating (or NOT circulating, unfortunately), it should be bug-free for quite some time to come!

Well, have a great week, everbuddy--and we'll talk with you soon!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

From the Dude

Here are a couple of photos that I took yesterday. It is the trunk of a eucalyptus tree--I had no

idea they would display so many colors like that! And I swear in the vertical one, the surface

looks like paintbrush stokes--like Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." That same kind of impasto technique...

I just thought it looked very pretty.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

My husband recently traveled to Brazil on business.
He saw a few birds there that are not quite like the ones we have here.
This one is a Guira Cuckoo. There were 8 or 9 of them right on the city sidewalk.

This next one is a Southern Crested Caracara. He was in a city park. Pretty big guy!

ABULIA

Pronunciation:  \ay-BOO-lee-uh\

noun

Definition of ABULIA

abnormal lack of ability to act or to make decisions

EXAMPLES

"Abulia is a motivational deficit that is associated with apathy,

loss of will, and lack of initiating behaviors."

— Handbook of the Neuroscience of Language, 2008

"The remoteness of the country house made him feel isolated and displaced—feelings

that worsened his abulia and melancholy—so he decided

to move back closer to town, where he felt more at home."

— Adam Sobsey, Independent Weekly (Durham, North Carolina), March 7

DID YOU KNOW?

"I must have a prodigious quantity of mind," Mark Twain once wrote. "It takes me as much

as a week, sometimes, to make it up." The indecision Twain laments is fairly common; only

when inability to make decisions reaches an abnormal level does it have an uncommon name: abulia.

The English term we use today comes from a New Latin word that combines the prefix a-, meaning "without,"

with the Greek word boulē, meaning "will." Abulia can refer to the kind of generalized indecision that

makes it impossible to choose what flavor ice cream you want, though it was created to

name a severe medical disorder that can render a person nearly inert.

Test Your Vocabulary:

What 8-letter word begins with "v" and refers to the act of making a choice or decision?

The answer is …

volition
