Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

Our Furred, Feathered, and Scaled Babies
We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Sunday to you all! It was a short week because of the Labor Day holiday, but it felt like a long week to me. That is because on Wednesday I received some distressing news from my home town, and that was the passing of Danny Bradshaw. He was one of my earliest friends largely because he and I entered this world shoulder to shoulder--born on the very same day! His Mom and my Mom were roommates at the hospital. Dan was in my kindergarten class and we were in the same school until we graduated from high school. After school, Dan stayed on his father's ranch and mostly grew rice. I went off to college, and then work in the south SF region, so we lost touch over the years. The last time I saw him in person was in 1989 at our ten year high school reunion. Apparently he had been in poor health in recent times, but the heart attack that claimed him came as a surprise and shock to his family. So I will be going back home for a funeral on Thursday of next week.

I also learned that Mr. Kaiser, who was the principal of the middle school I attended for 7th and 8th grades, passed away on August 28th. Now, those years were a bit troubled for me because of the problems I was having with bullies, so I spent a fair amount of time in his office and having long talks with him. I always saw him as fair and reasonable. Later, when the school district wanted to ship me off to another school because we had moved into a no-man's land between district boundaries, I wanted to stay in Wheatland schools because the quality of education was better...and he went to bat for me. I always respected him greatly for that.

So it was a bit of a melancholy week, as I remembered and tried to honor some old friends.

Speaking of last week, I really want to apologize for the sound problems during the VacaChat. I believe I have the culprit narrowed down to some software issues. I think the Flash player that runs the inputs was corrupt, so I will be updating the software and getting the latest version of the Ustream Broadcaster software, so hopefully that will fix things. I'm just hoping the latest Ustream software will not just contain more breakages meant to try to get users to go with their paid packages. They have been moving in the direction more and more.

Other than that, I have been trying to get something going with this possible job opening in SF, but we have been going around and around on that a bit. Also doing some drawing and work projects, so it has been a busy time. It is a good time to stay indoors, given all the fires burning around us. I just saw it announced that more than 100 homes have been lost in what they are calling the "Valley Fire." That one only started less than 24 hours ago, but it has just exploded in size. We truly need the rains to start. If we have another dry year, there may be nothing left to burn.

So I wish my note were a little more cheery, but I guess some times you just have to grit your teeth and get through!

One more week before the big MOD Meet in Minnesota. So next Saturday evening it looks like I shall be Skyping-in. I don't know if I would be able to record that or not. If I can, I think I will try to do a replay of that on Sunday night during the usual VacaChat time (6pm PDT). In any event, I'll try to broadcast something at that time, so for those who are not able to make it to the Meet, you might look for that.

Anyway, I hope you all have a good week coming up, and we'll catch y'all later!
Cheers, VacaDude

BonnieSparrow We received this news last week (Saturday, August 29, 2015):

I have some very sad news this morning. I just rec'd a call from Alan, BonnySparrow SH husband. She passed away this morning at about 5:30 AM. She was so hoping to come to the MOD meet. Her daughter was trying to work it out. I talked to her a few weeks ago and she was very hopeful. She went downhill rather quickly this week Alan said. She told me that she was just getting tired of fighting for her health. She wasn't doing well on Wednesday and Alan called the ambulance and she went to the hospital. He spent a lot of time with her there. Thursday night when he went to go home, she gave him extra kisses on the lips.(that's the way he put it). Friday night he and her daughter stayed at the hospital all night with her. He said he thought the time was near because of her breathing. Like I said, she passed this morning at 5:30 AM.  He ask that we keep him in our thoughts and prayers.
Rest in Peace Bonny! You are so loved and will be missed.

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 9/6).

The hearing was held on Thursday morning. Her sister didn't bother to show up and it was found that her sister had withdrawn money from the accounts that she was not to have and that she had not paid the bill for her parents' assisted living.
The guardians ad litem for both parents recommended that the parents be placed in GentleDoe's care in their own home.
This is not a totally done deal but it sounds good. There is another hearing next week that may help Doe get back some of what her sister has take from her and her parents. We'll keep everyone posted. Keep up the prayers!

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list, so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us, "Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.
Shari (no longer in Memphis) (Shari Sides on FB)"

Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts for owl our wonderful VacaFamily members!  If you have any prayer requests, updates or news of answered prayers, please let us know. Email us with the information so it can be included in the next newsletter.

A Message From Zorro    StoryTime News    StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

ZIt is I, Zorro the Mouse...reporting to you from smoky Vacaville, California. Whenever I look outside, the whole world looks very orange, which of course reminds me of cheese. So I just go back inside and raid the refrigerator. What else can you do??

Another week has gone by and added itself to the long, sad saga of the Dude's vapor chamber. Yes, it has been a struggle to get the fan assembly going. But finally, we have something working...sort of. Actually, when you turn it on the whole machine shakes so violently--it looks just like one of those paint can shakers that you see at the hardware store. I think we have a issue of balance. In that, it doesn't have any. Who would have thunk that building something so seemingly easy and simple would turn out to be such a struggle?

I have tried to help wherever I could. But then, that might be part of the problem...

I hope everybuddy could understand me last week during the StoryTime! That was some crazy audio problems that the Dude's computer was having. I think it made me sound like RoboMouse. (Which, by the way, would be a great idea for a new comic book superhero...dontcha think???)

Well, I hope you all have a good week coming up, and we'll talk to you next week! And I'll be talking to everbuddy at the MOD Meet next weekend on the Skypey-thingeroo, too!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Cauliflower Popcorn

  Ingredients:

1 head cauliflower, cut into bite-sized florets
Butter-flavored cooking spray
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon black pepper

  Directions:
  Preheat oven to 400°F.

In a large bowl, place cauliflower; spray with butter-flavored cooking spray, while stirring to coat on all sides. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper and toss until evenly coated. Place in a single layer on baking sheet.

Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until cauliflower begins to brown. Serve warm.

Quinoa Salad

  Ingredients:

2 cups uncooked quinoa*
2 cups low sodium chicken broth

1 cucumber, diced

4 ribs celery, diced

1 large onion, diced

6-8 Roma tomatoes, diced

2 large carrots, shredded or diced

1 bunch fresh parsley

1 packet Italian dressing mix

1 8-ounce bottle Zesty Italian dressing

  Directions:
Rinse dry quinoa to remove natural coating, called saponin, that can make the cooked grain taste bitter or soapy. Add quinoa and chicken broth to a  a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

Combine all diced vegetables in a large bowl. (You can microwave the onions for about 30-45 seconds to remove most of the heat, but still leave them crunchy.)

Remove stems from parsley and chop the leaves fine. Add to vegetables. Stir in cooled quinoa.

Sprinkle with dry Italian dressing mix. Pour about ½ the salad dressing over the quinoa mixture and stir well (gently!). Refrigerate for several hours.

Before serving, still well. Add more dressing, if necessary. (The quinoa might absorb some of the previously applied dressing.)

*If quinoa is not available to you (Aldi carries it now), you can substitute barley or brown rice.

From the Dude

I think we all agree that these little owls made with The Dude's new 3Doodler are … … … ummmmmm … … … interesting.

The Dude says, "Doesn't it look like they were made out of gagshag?

Maybe an owlet who was an only child decided to make themselves a sibling...  ;)"

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

This week I’m sending Ozzy and Ozzy. Can you see a resemblance?
Well I did pretty well with the “look” in his eyes anyway…

An attorney was driving through the countryside when his car conked out. He looked under the hood and whacked a few things with a hammer. In the process, he knocked off a hose and his arm was soaked with gasoline before he got the line reconnected. Discouraged, he attempted to start his car. Much to his surprise, it started - and he headed for the nearest town to find a mechanic. To celebrate his success, he lit a cigarette, at which time his arm exploded into flames. He stuck his arm out of the window, hoping the wind at 50 miles an hour would put out the blaze. He was promptly pulled over by a local patrolman and given a ticket for an illegal use of a firearm.

The astronauts in the Sea of Tranquility were amazed to discover that the moon actually did contain large underground deposits of cheese.

Once outside the landing module, they climbed into the rover and drove across the lunar surface to obtain samples.

In one location they discovered a large deposit of brie and collected twenty-five pounds to bring back to earth.

They drove to a second location and collected fifty pounds of camembert.

In a third location they hit a vein of cheddar and collected another fifty pounds of samples.

Mission Control crackled through their headsets that it would not be satisfied unless they brought back at least another twenty-five pounds of brie.

The astronauts turned their rover around and proceeded to the first location, where they collected another twenty-five pounds of the cheese.

The astronauts were almost back to the landing module when Mission Control radioed that it wanted another twenty-five pounds of brie.

Disgruntled, one of the astronauts sarcastically snapped into his microphone, “Have you ever seen such a site in all your life as brie mined thrice?”

OCTOTHORPE

Pronunciation:  \AHK-tuh-thorp\\

noun

Definition of OCTOTHORPE

the symbol #

EXAMPLES

"To demonstrate and test the varying thicknesses that a pen is capable of imparting,

Ivy League students often begin by writing an octothorpe—known to some plebians as a 'hashtag.'"

— Evan Siegel, Columbia Spectator (Columbia University), December 6, 2014

"Whatever it ought to be called, Messina chose to use this symbol for collating Twitter searches

in 2007  because he wanted a sign that could be input from a low-tech cellphone. He had

two options:  octothorpe or asterisk. He chose the former."

— Roman Mars, Slate.com, December 17, 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

I

A versatile symbol with many names (among them hash mark, number sign, and pound sign),

the octothorpe has become popularized as the go-to symbol for marking trending topics on

Twitter and other social media. It is believed to have been adopted by the telecommunications industry

with the advent of touch-tone dialing in the 1960s. Stories abound about how the odd symbol got its name.

The octo- part almost certainly refers to the eight points on the symbol, but the -thorpe remains a mystery

One story links it to a telephone company employee who happened to burp while talking about the symbol

with co-workers. Another relates it to the athlete Jim Thorpe and the campaign to restore posthumously his

Olympic medals, which were taken away after it was discovered that he played baseball professionally

previous to the 1912 Games. A third claims it derives from an Old English word for "village."
