Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

We will soon have a new feature on the VacaNews website. Send us pictures of you and your pets. We'll have a page featuring all our animal family members. Send them to vacachatb@gmail.com. Make sure you include your chat name and your pet's name. You can also include your real name and location if you want to.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted soon—just waiting on some graphics from TheDude.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
I'm just sitting here having finished a work project that I was up most of the night for, and I'm trying to calm/wind down with some Pink Floyd. I may try to get a little sleep before I plunge ahead with the next item(s) on my to-do list. Sundays are always so busy!

I've got some fun announcements regarding the MOD meet taking place next month in Minneapolis, Minnesota. First, it looks like CAR is going to set up a Skype call and I will do a chat remotely. This is because, sadly, it doesn't look like there is any way I can get there to attend the event in person. So we figured that Skype would be the next best thing! I figure I'll say howdy, and some of my critters can say howdy (as well as confuse the heck out of anyone who has not been watching my VacaChats!). And the second major announcement for me is that I have actually pulled the pens and brushes out, and I am bringing out some new comic strips: "Laughing Outside the Box 2015" This is my tribute to Berke Breathed, who has come out with "Bloom County 2015," because I figured if he can come out of semi-retirement, so can I! Now unfortunately, he can make a living at his, whereas I have to fit mine around work projects. So while he is able to do a daily strip, I've only managed to get one done so far! (Which I am hoping can be slotted into the newsletter here somewhere.)

The subject matter, for the time being, will revolve around Whisper, the adopted barn owl for the International MOD Meet. I am going to follow his travels as he heads to the MOD Meet. This in spite of the fact that he is not actually going to be at the meet because of his delicate health (but they will be showing other raptors). So I'm taking a bit of artistic license here.

So we'll see how well I can keep up with it. I was shooting to come out with a strip every couple of days, but I'm already behind in that regard.

Some fun stuff on the photography front. I got the developed film back from the gifted cameras, and unfortunately both rolls were completely blank. So what that means is that I now have some nice practice film with which to practice loading my developing tank. Yes, I am determined to do it--I want to try developing some B&W film. The last time I did so was around the year 1978, so it will be interesting to see how much of it comes back to me. Now I'm just talking developing the negatives, but not the second step which is to make photographic prints. That's a whole other deal, and generally requires an enlarger (which I no longer have). So I'm just going to develop the film into negatives and then scan them. I've got a couple of tolls of 120 film for the Twin Lens Reflex, so all I need now are some chemicals.

It would be interesting, because it would complete a full-circle journey. I went from snapping pictures on an old Brownie camera, developing the film, then to 35mm SLR photography and shooting in color--to paid processing. I never crossed that threshold of developing color negative film...it is a whole order of magnitude more difficult. Many years of shooting film on point&shoot cameras and paying to have it made into prints, and then the gradual move to digital. Then to the DSLR digital stage. And now it looks like I'll be returning to film and developing it myself! I'll still be doing DSLR as my main photography--the B&W with the TLR is just for the sake of fun and nostalgia. Though it should be interesting to see the difference between the digital and the medium format film. B&W photography just has a look in film that cannot be matched in the digital world. So I look forward to being able to experiment in both realms.

I actually spent some time last night on the couch with my eyes closed practicing loading the 120 film onto the reel of the developing tank. After a couple of tries, I had it down. It was amazing to me that it had been nearly 40 years since my fingers last felt their way over those plastic bumps and ridges, but it seemed to come back pretty quickly!

Well, it is time to start looking at the old to-do list again and start hacking away at it. So until next week, enjoy the rest of your weekend, and we'll talk with ya later!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 8/23).

GentleDoe is requesting our prayers for several specific items. Her sister and sister's lawyer are still attempting to cause many problems. Doe asks that we pray for a good outcome and good decision from the judge at the upcoming hearing.

She also asks that we pray for her financial situation as she struggles to keep her house and make a home for her and her birds. She may have a new job and asks for us to pray for that, as well.

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list, so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us, "Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.
Shari (no longer in Memphis) (Shari Sides on FB)"

Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts for owl our wonderful VacaFamily members!  If you have any prayer requests, updates or news of answered prayers, please let us know. Email us with the information so it can be included in the next newsletter.

A Message From Zorro        StoryTime Archive    Recipe of the Week

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. It looks like the hot days of August are drifting by, and soon fall will be in the air. I sure hope the Dude gets my football helmet finished in time for the football season to begin! I can't wait to run around like my favorite linebackers and smash into things! Oh, wait. Maybe that's why the Dude has not finished the helmet yet--he's afraid I will use it to smash into everything. I'll just have to tell him that I need it for my ballet lessons. That sounds a little safer. (Makes you wonder just what the heck kind of dance studio that would be though, right??)

I'm so excited--it looks like I'll get to be on the Skype next month for the MOD Meet! That should be fun to be able to say howdy to all the nice MODs out there gathering in the Land of a Thousand Lakes! And so tantalizingly close to the land of a thousand cheeses--Wisconsin!! Oh well, maybe the Dude will buy me some nice gouda to console me. I am capable of much forgiveness by way of the heady aroma of various dairy products.

I see the Dude is back to doing some cartooning again--I'm hoping that maybe I can make an appearance from time to time in there. I always like posing for pictures!

Well, the clock on the wall says it's a clock on the wall. So I had better scoot. We'll see you later, all you alligators!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Pepper Poppers

You can make these as simple or as fancy as you want. I've offered several options.
  Ingredients:

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
12 fresh jalapenos, halved lengthwise and seeded
Optional ingredients: (use any combination)
¼-½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
¼-½ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

¼-½ cup grated fresh Parmesan cheese
6 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled (or 12 bacon strips cut in half)
Sour cream, onion dip or ranch salad dressing

  Directions:
You can manage the heat of this snack by how much of the white membrane you leave in the peppers. Remove all of the white membrane (ribs) and you remove the heat. Leave some in and you leave in some of the heat. It's up to you. Make sure you wear disposable gloves when cutting the peppers; the oils can burn skin. Avoid touching your face.

Combine the cream cheese and seasonings; mix well. Spoon about 2 tablespoonfuls into each pepper half.

Place in a greased 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 325° for 15-25 minutes or until cheese is melted and beginning to brown nicely. Serve with sour cream, dip or dressing. Yield: about 2 dozen.

You can add other cheeses to the cream cheese mixture. We like adding Parmesan or Cheddar.

You can mix in cooked, crumbled bacon or you can wrap the peppers with half a strip of bacon before baking (or you can do both).

Thai Sweet Chili Sauce

The amounts in parentheses are for making a large quantity of this sauce (which we suggest).
  Ingredients:

3 (24) large garlic cloves, peeled
2 (16) red Jalapeño or Serrano peppers, deseeded (See note #1 below.)
2 teaspoons (5 tablespoons) fresh ginger root, minced
¼ cup (2 cups) rice vinegar
½ cup (4 cups) sugar
¾ cup (6 cups) water
½ tablespoon (¼ cup) salt
1 tablespoon (½ cup) cornstarch or potato starch (See note #2 below.)
2 tablespoons (1 cup) water

  Directions:

In the blender, purée together all the ingredients, except for the last two.

Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Lower the heat to medium and simmer until the mixture thickens up a bit and the garlic-pepper bits begin to soften, about 3 minutes.

Combine the cornstarch and water to make a slurry. Whisk in the cornstarch mixture and continue to simmer one more minute. The cornstarch will help the sauce to thicken slightly thereby causing nice suspension of the garlic-pepper bits; otherwise, you get a thin sauce with all the little pieces floating on the surface.

Let cool completely before storing in a glass jar and refrigerate.

Notes
1. More seeds = more heat. Keep in mind, however, that the heat is the strongest the day you make the sauce and starts to dissipate gradually. This sauce keeps for a long time, and after a couple of weeks, you can’t even taste the pepper.

2. If you want to make a large batch of this sauce (more than half a gallon) — and you certainly should since this sauce lasts a long time — the best thickener to use is pre-gelatinized or “pre-gel” starch which is both acid- and heat-stable (corn or potato starch is not). It’s marketed under the brand name Clearjel®. Your chili sauce will remain viscous and maintain the nice suspension for the entire duration of its shelf life when thickened with pre-gelatinized starch. Traditionally, Thai sweet chilli sauce is not thickened with starch; the syrupy consistency is achieved through cooking the sauce containing lots of sugar down until it’s thick enough to create a good suspension of the garlic-pepper bits. However, if you notice, bottled Thai sweet chilli sauce normally contained a starch thickener. You can go either way. I personally prefer the version that contains less sugar which is this one.

From the Dude

I think we all agree that these little owls made with The Dude's new 3Doodler are … … … ummmmmm … … … interesting.

The Dude says, "Doesn't it look like they were made out of gagshag?

Maybe an owlet who was an only child decided to make themselves a sibling...  ;)"

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

I'm still visiting with my grands. This is the three year old helping us stack wood.
He told me the mask is to scare the chipmunks away.

Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

What do you do with a blue whale?
You cheer it up!

What has eighteen legs and catches flies?
A baseball team.

Judi and Gayle were at an auto show. There they saw a hot-rod with a jacked up rear. "Judi, why is the back end higher than the front?" Gayle asked. "Don't you know anything?" Judi sighed exasperated. "If you've got the back up like that, then you're always going downhill!"

What did the beaver say to the tree?
"It's been nice gnawing you!"

A guy entered a contest and ended up winning a few acres of land in the Mississippi flood plain.

He'd never won anything before - he couldn't believe it!

So he entered another contest and won a $250,000 house!

Two big prizes in a row - incredible!

Naturally, he built the house on his new land.

Then he bought a lottery ticket, and he won a ton of money!

He was astounded by his run of luck, and decided to quit while he was ahead.

He quit his job, used the lottery money to buy furniture and moved into his new house.

And one night, as he sat on his new porch watching the rain and listening to the thunder, it all started to sink in.

Zorro's Word
of the Week

GARDEROBE

Pronunciation:  \GAR-drohb\

noun

Definition of GARDEROBE

1: a wardrobe or its contents
2: a private room : bedroom
3: privy, toilet

EXAMPLES

On our tour of the castle, the guide made sure to point out the garderobe.

"Located in Langley-on-Tyne, Northumberland, the castle has the best-preserved medieval latrines,

or garderobes, in Europe. Historians think it was a garrison because it has 12."

— Sue Kovach Shuman, The Star-Ledger (Newark, New Jersey), April 30, 2006

DID YOU KNOW?

I

Garderobe entered the English language in the 15th century and continues in use to this day, though its

frequency has diminished significantly since the 19th century. Originally, its primary duty was

to provide English speakers with a word for a room or closet in which to store clothing. Later, by

extension, it was used for private bedrooms and bathrooms. Today you are most likely to encounter

the word in a description of an old castle, such as in our example sentences. Garder, the French

word for "guard" on which garderobe is based, has also served English well by directly contributing to

the formation of such words as award, guard, regard, and, yes, wardrobe.

Name That Synonym: Fill in the blanks to create a synonym of garderobe meaning "toilet" or "privy":

d _ _ ni _ ke _.

 The answer is …
