Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
I hope you are all well on this fine Sunday! It is very hot and smoky outside our house, so this is a good day for catching up on indoor activities.

Many thanks for all the birthday wishes and cards...I had a lovely weekend celebrating it--we spent three days in Bodega Bay. Simply one of the most beautiful places on Earth. It is kind of our happy place that we occasionally go to, since it is only a couple of hours driving to get there from here.

We had absolutely beautiful weather all weekend, but the night of my birthday was very unusual. Typically in the summer the fog rolls in at night, and then burns off in the morning. Well, Saturday night the fog stayed way off-shore, so when we got back from dinner at the Duck Club, I went to the back door and opened it--I wanted to hear the sound of the foghorn. Instead, I looked out back and said hey--what are all these lights? Suddenly it registered in my brain that they were stars. Millions of brilliant stars. Then I stepped onto the balcony to where I was shielded from the lights in the room. That's when the sky opened up, and I could see that the Milky Way was standing right in front of us, edge down into the horizon. It was as brilliant as I have ever seen it--rivaling the skies from when I would go backpacking. I had forgotten just how beautiful the sky can be. When we lived in the Bay Area, you really could only see the very brightest of stars. Then when we moved to Vacaville I was delighted because the skies were so much darker, and one could even see a hint of the Milky Way. But I had forgotten just how beautiful a truly dark sky can be.

So anyway, we sat out on the balcony and stared at the sky for a couple of hours. Saw lots of shooting stars. Made lots of wishes.

My darling wife got me several amazing presents, including a book about the Gemini spacecraft, a Charlie Parker CD, but then she also got me a 3Doodler! Those are the things that are kind of a cross between a 3D printer and a fountain pen. I have tried making a few things with it, but it doesn't behave the way I had imagined it to. So I'm having to adjust my expectations and technique. I'm going to ask Dot to post a photo of my first ever attempt at making 3D owls with it. The results are...interesting.

Then we had a bit of an alarming thing happen this week. I got our water bill, and in it was a letter from the City of Vacaville stating that they were obligated to inform us that the City's water has had increased levels of hexavalent chromium (aka Chromium-6). This is the same stuff that was at the heart of the Erin Brokovich story, and our levels are currently around twice the safe limit and rising. The problem is apparently that because the drought is lasting so long, we have industry and agriculture pulling more and more water out of the underground aquifer. So much so, that the water levels are getting lower than they have ever been since they started keeping records. Well, we're pulling our drinking water out of there, as well. So essentially we are "licking the bottom of the bucket." All of the contaminants that were heavier than water have settled down to the bottom of the aquifer, and now when we drink that stuff the concentrations are spiking. So we are taking all the precautions we can--we got a pitcher filter to use in our drinking water, food preparation, coffee making, etc. Hopefully this will only be a temporary problem--either we get a bunch of rain to fill the aquifer back up, or the City adds more filtration systems to remove the chromium-6 (at which point our water rates will undoubtedly go up).

But back on the bright side, I got a new toy yesterday. Kind of a combination gift to myself and from Mary (she's helping me with the cost of it)--I got a new Wacom drawing tablet. So I am hoping to do some more drawings for the newsletter (as well as some other projects). And speaking of that, I need to get back to the drawing board!

Have a great week, everyone!!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 7/20).

The merit hearing that was supposed to be held on June 18th was cancelled and I'm still awaiting the information on its reschedule date. I'm still able to talk with my parents by phone as long as I provide the code assigned by DSS and don't call too frequently. Thankfully most of the calls have been from my parents when they can get someone to help dial the phone. To my knowledge I am the only family member allowed to call in to my parents. I do know my parents' next-door neighbor was allowed to visit them last week.

Mom and dad are both unhappy there and want to be with me. My lawyer has taken the attitude (due to money, I think) to just wait for my sister to make allegations or other legal "emergency" before doing anything. I would truly like to get moving on my parents being able to be with me or at least in a place where I can get to them to spend time with them. I'm concerned with the passing of time because of my parents ages. It is heartbreaking to me to be locked away by the state and not able to see or live with family who loves you and wants to be with you for as long as God allows. I can't think of anything worse than being ill or dying and having no family to be with you to show their love and help you through those times.

DSS has left my parents there with nothing. They don't have any of their personal things, furniture or clothes. Mom has been without her prescription eyeglasses since she left them at my sister's when she and my father were taken out of my sister's house by DSS. They complain about the food both how bad it is and how little they do get. They don't get any exercise either to help them keep up their strength.

Physically I am hanging in there, mentally/emotionally I am fighting depression and feelings of despair. It seems no one can or will help me to get my parents nor help with getting my house back and/or housing assistance.

My house was broken into a couple weeks ago. The door was kicked in to break the deadbolt lock. A neighbor called me a week ago to let me know my door was open. I called the Lexington Sheriff's department. I asked them if they could secure the door and also notify my sister. I don't know what is still there but there was a washer, dryer, two refridgerators and a freezer. No one can do anything since my sister has my father's POA. She has done nothing to protect my house/my father's property.

My birds are here with me and they are all I have to hold onto until I can get my parents. I keep fighting the feeling that I have lost my parents before they pass away. It is a horrible feeling, not to be allowed to be with the parents you love and want to be with at a time in their lives when they need their family/loved ones to be there for them. It is terrible to be denied to be with loved ones before they die and knowing the day will come and you will never be able to spend time or love them on this earth ever again. It should be against the law to do it even for a state! I've lost close personal friends that I was very close to wiithout being able to see them for a last good-bye and it still hurts. I do not want the next time I am able to be with them to be in the funeral home. My parents worked hard to provide for my sister and myself after they were gone and it breaks my heart for them to be put in a home by the state of SC and I can't be with them or have them with me. My mother was with me and had good care until my cousin picked her up and took to my sister's house. My sister was able to keep my father from my mother and myself for over a year (until I called for a welfare check for my mother when she was taken to my sister's house).

Please pray for me to find an attorney who can and will help me get custody of my parents. Also, for me with both a job and house. Everything that I still have is in storage. I'm renting an apartment paying full rent (which is a bit more than I get each month with my Social Security disability) since my sister has cost me my Section 8 housing assistance. I need to get my things out of storage as that is costing me each moth as well. I do not want to have to sell everything. I know things are not important but I feel like I have to have some part of my life before this to cling to.

Please forgive me for this rambling but heartfelt e-mail. I believed my parents and thought I had a house and the only hard part would be having to deal with their death when the time came. In a way it feels like the state and my sister have taken my parents and my life. I don't want to lose my parents before the Lord takes them from me.

Please pray for me, for God's guidance (that I would hear it and follow it), for His strength, and for His help. I need to be able to get this job coming up. Due to health problems it has been awhile since I have worked. so I need to get my skills up-to-date, the strength and the stamina to do the job. I need an affordable place to live, preferably with my birds, bunnies and parents. I'm still having to deal with everything to do with my parents and SC. I know God is there for me but some (most) days it sure would be nice to have a shoulder to cry on or someone to hold me and tell me everything is going to be all right and make me believe it.

My love to all of my Molly/Vacafamily and Friends.

Love you all,
GentleDoe

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list, so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us, "Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse, here. I think we have finally managed to get this placed cleaned up after the party last weekend. You see, Vacadude and Vacachick went out of town for the weekend, so I thought it would be a good idea to throw a little party and invite some friends over to celebrate the Dude's big day. Well, things got a little out of hand with the food preparation, and all the animals running in and out of here. We had the animal control folks come by here a few times to try to get us to keep the noise down. What can I say--we are just a bunch of party animals!

So I and some of my pals here having been tidying-up around here for the past few days. We're getting there. Boy, humans sure do get fussy about having outside walls without holes in them. What's the deal with that?!?

Speaking of which, I should get back to my chorez.

I'll talk with y'all next week!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

Secret Ingredient Meatloaf

  Ingredients:

2½ pounds of lean ground beef
2–6 ounce packages of stuffing mix (like Stove Top)
2 eggs
1 cup of Applesauce
¼ cup ketchup
¼ cup barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
½ teaspoon rubbed sage
Salt and pepper to taste

  Directions:
Mix beef, stuffing mix, eggs, and applesauce. Form into a loaf shape in the bottom of a 9x13-inch pan.

Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes. Remove from oven.

Mix ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, sage, and salt and pepper. Spread evenly over the top of the meatloaf.

Return to oven and bake an additional 15 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 160°F.

This recipe is also very good baked in muffin tins. Reduce cooking time accordingly.

Five Cheese Zucchini Casserole

  Ingredients:

4 medium zucchini
Butter flavored cooking spray
1 24-ounce can pasta sauce (we use Hunt’s)
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
8 ounces Velveeta, softened
½ cup Parmesan cheese
½ cup shredded Romano cheese
1 medium onion, finely diced
1 egg
2 cloves garlic, minced
Italian seasoning or fresh herbs, as desired
8 ounces thinly sliced fresh Asiago cheese

  Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F

Slice zucchini about ¼-inch thick. Spray a 9x13” pan with cooking spray. Using half the zucchini, cover the bottom of the pan with zucchini slices. Pour pasta sauce over the zucchini. Layer remaining zucchini over sauce.

In a separate bowl, combine cream cheese, Velveeta, Parmesan, Romano, onion, egg, garlic and seasonings/herbs. Spread over top layer of zucchini.

Top with sliced Asiago cheese.

Bake at 350°F for about 30-45 minutes or until zucchini is tender and cheese is melted and nicely browned.

Ketaki sent this in. She says, "I saw it live when it happened and it was so fast. It's too bad she didn't kill it and feed to the owlets. They could have used the food, and the snake, a rat snake, is non-venomous. But she was intent on protection. They run it in slow motion at the end so you can see her, and the inset window shows the snake coming down from the top."

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

I think we all agree that these little owls made with The Dude's new 3Doodler are … … … ummmmmm … … … interesting.

The Dude says, "Doesn't it look like they were made out of gagshag?

Maybe an owlet who was an only child decided to make themselves a sibling...  ;)"

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

Inspired by Carlos Royal's photos I made this little wall hanging for the MOD meetup silent auction.

Bonus Photos!

CC's cousin Joff (aka Jonathan) and her Aunt Marfa (aka Sewla or Martha) just returned from a trip to the Grand Canyon.

Joff is quite the picture taker (we think he should be published) and we've included two of them here.

Conductor to orchestra at the beginning of a rehearsal: “Please get your pencils out, We have some marking to do on this score. The first two bars are in 3/4, not 4/4 as written. Next, in the 5th bar, change it to 7/8 and this remains to the end. Now, in bar 7, we lower the pitch 1/2 step. In bar 13, lower the pitch one whole step, and this will remain to the end. Thank you, now let us begin.”

Soprano soloist: “Excuse me, maestro. What would you like for me to change?”

Conductor: “Nothing at all, madam. Just sing it exactly as you did yesterday.”

Zorro's Word
of the Week

INTERPELLATE

Pronunciation:  \in-ter-PELL-ayt\

verb

Definition of INTERPELLATE

to question (someone, such as a foreign minister) formally concerning an official action or policy or personal conduct

EXAMPLES

At the international tribunal, U.N. officials interpellated the premier about his country's acquisition of illegal weapons.

"The group noted that Mr. Lotilla was being interpellated at the time by Rep. Elpidio F. Barzaga, Jr.,

a member of the majority bloc who supported the fare hike."

— Melissa Luz T. Lopez and Vince Alvic Alexis F. Nonato, Business World, January 23, 2015

DID YOU KNOW?

I

Interpellate is a word you might encounter in the international news section of a newspaper or magazine.

It refers to a form of political challenging used in the congress or parliament of many nations throughout

the world, in some cases provided for in the country's constitution. Formal interpellation isn't practiced in the

U.S. Congress, but in places where it is practiced, it can be the first step in ousting an appointed official

or bringing to task an elected one. The word was borrowed from the Latin term interpellatus, past participle

of interpellare, which means "to interrupt or disturb a person speaking." The "interrupt" sense, once used in English,

is now obsolete, and interpellate should not be confused with interpolate,

which means "to insert words into a text or conversation."
