Channel Links

Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Happy second week of August to you all. I am going to have to make this fairly brief, as the VacaChick and I are heading out to Bodega Bay for the weekend. (That's our little getaway location.) I am taking my camera, so I hope to have some cool pictures from there soon. I have been working very hard this week to catch up on some projects, picked up a new one--so it looks like I will be busy next week.

I took the old cameras out early this week and shot the rest of the rolls of film that were in them. When I took the used film out, I made some discoveries. For one thing, the 35mm film is a Fotomat brand, and those guys haven't been around for almost 20 years! So that film may be quite old. However, after I got the film out I discovered that the shutter was stuck in the open position, so the whole roll might be fogged. That's too bad. That camera might be destined for life on a display shelf.

As for the Twin Lens Reflex camera, I shot up the rest of the roll, but I also discovered that there was something loose rattling around inside. Once I got the film out, I found that the shutter was working very well, but the internal mirror (for the viewfinder) was broken. So midweek I did a two-part restoration--first using Sugru to join the two large pieces of the broken mirror together, and then some household Goop adhesive to set the mirror back in its mount. The result was very successful! The viewfinder works very well now and is much brighter than it was (I gave the optics a good cleaning while I had the camera apart. So that camera is almost as good as new. I sent the film back east for processing, and also ordered from the lab a couple of rolls of B&W film for it. I can't wait to take it out and try to get some pictures! Then it is my hope to try developing the film myself. That is something I have not done for almost 40 years, but I still have my old equipment. I think it should be fun!

And that about does it for me. Time to get packed and get on the road to Bodega Bay! (I just hope the birds don't attack us while we're out there...)
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. She has lost a close friend and is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  We received this from Littleguys this week:  I am recuperating from a minor thing, but wanted to share with you folks, especially those of you that know I have not been able to show my horses "in hand" for over two years. I have sciatica. That is the sciatic nerve causing trouble. In my case, the hole in the vertebra that the sciatic nerve goes through was filling up with arthritis. Knee and hip joints are fine, though I have been limping as if they bothered me. I wanted to take care of it over a year ago when the MRI showed us what the actual problem was, but the doctors INSISTED on taking care of the Stage Zero Breast Cancer last year instead. (Cancer is gone and since it was Stage Zero, never had to do chemo)

Finally, last Thursday morning, I went to Kaiser and got some shots "in the right place." Camera and all.

Good friends of mine insisted I stay at their place so they could make sure I followed instructions, take it easy, don't bend down, lean over, feed my horses, trim trees, etc. Yep, you country girls know what I mean. And I got to watch their Direct TV with the RFD channel. That was icing on the cake.

By the afternoon after the 6:30 am procedure, for the first time in over six months…after sitting or laying down, I did NOT have to first stand and steady myself and then have 5 - 10 painful steps. That alone was worth the procedure, that I can now stand and walk normally.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 7/20).

The merit hearing that was supposed to be held on June 18th was cancelled and I'm still awaiting the information on its reschedule date. I'm still able to talk with my parents by phone as long as I provide the code assigned by DSS and don't call too frequently. Thankfully most of the calls have been from my parents when they can get someone to help dial the phone. To my knowledge I am the only family member allowed to call in to my parents. I do know my parents' next-door neighbor was allowed to visit them last week.

Mom and dad are both unhappy there and want to be with me. My lawyer has taken the attitude (due to money, I think) to just wait for my sister to make allegations or other legal "emergency" before doing anything. I would truly like to get moving on my parents being able to be with me or at least in a place where I can get to them to spend time with them. I'm concerned with the passing of time because of my parents ages. It is heartbreaking to me to be locked away by the state and not able to see or live with family who loves you and wants to be with you for as long as God allows. I can't think of anything worse than being ill or dying and having no family to be with you to show their love and help you through those times.

DSS has left my parents there with nothing. They don't have any of their personal things, furniture or clothes. Mom has been without her prescription eyeglasses since she left them at my sister's when she and my father were taken out of my sister's house by DSS. They complain about the food both how bad it is and how little they do get. They don't get any exercise either to help them keep up their strength.

Physically I am hanging in there, mentally/emotionally I am fighting depression and feelings of despair. It seems no one can or will help me to get my parents nor help with getting my house back and/or housing assistance.

My house was broken into a couple weeks ago. The door was kicked in to break the deadbolt lock. A neighbor called me a week ago to let me know my door was open. I called the Lexington Sheriff's department. I asked them if they could secure the door and also notify my sister. I don't know what is still there but there was a washer, dryer, two refridgerators and a freezer. No one can do anything since my sister has my father's POA. She has done nothing to protect my house/my father's property.

My birds are here with me and they are all I have to hold onto until I can get my parents. I keep fighting the feeling that I have lost my parents before they pass away. It is a horrible feeling, not to be allowed to be with the parents you love and want to be with at a time in their lives when they need their family/loved ones to be there for them. It is terrible to be denied to be with loved ones before they die and knowing the day will come and you will never be able to spend time or love them on this earth ever again. It should be against the law to do it even for a state! I've lost close personal friends that I was very close to wiithout being able to see them for a last good-bye and it still hurts. I do not want the next time I am able to be with them to be in the funeral home. My parents worked hard to provide for my sister and myself after they were gone and it breaks my heart for them to be put in a home by the state of SC and I can't be with them or have them with me. My mother was with me and had good care until my cousin picked her up and took to my sister's house. My sister was able to keep my father from my mother and myself for over a year (until I called for a welfare check for my mother when she was taken to my sister's house).

Please pray for me to find an attorney who can and will help me get custody of my parents. Also, for me with both a job and house. Everything that I still have is in storage. I'm renting an apartment paying full rent (which is a bit more than I get each month with my Social Security disability) since my sister has cost me my Section 8 housing assistance. I need to get my things out of storage as that is costing me each moth as well. I do not want to have to sell everything. I know things are not important but I feel like I have to have some part of my life before this to cling to.

Please forgive me for this rambling but heartfelt e-mail. I believed my parents and thought I had a house and the only hard part would be having to deal with their death when the time came. In a way it feels like the state and my sister have taken my parents and my life. I don't want to lose my parents before the Lord takes them from me.

Please pray for me, for God's guidance (that I would hear it and follow it), for His strength, and for His help. I need to be able to get this job coming up. Due to health problems it has been awhile since I have worked. so I need to get my skills up-to-date, the strength and the stamina to do the job. I need an affordable place to live, preferably with my birds, bunnies and parents. I'm still having to deal with everything to do with my parents and SC. I know God is there for me but some (most) days it sure would be nice to have a shoulder to cry on or someone to hold me and tell me everything is going to be all right and make me believe it.

My love to all of my Molly/Vacafamily and Friends.

Love you all,
GentleDoe

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. The Dude has been gone this weekend, and I have been left in charge to "hold down the fort." I'm not sure what that is or what it means, but if I see any forts starting to work themselves loose, I will be sure to run over there and hold that sucker down. Unless I'm in the middle of a good western on the TV, in which case the fort is just going to have to hold its own.

I'm still awaiting the carpeting to be delivered for my new apartment. The view is great, but the floor consists of some aluminum screen, which makes if a bit drafty. So some nice carpet, some weatherstripping...that should do the trick. Oh, and the 50 inch plasma television. I might have to install that outside the apartment--since it is only about 8 inches across on the inside. Anyway, I hope I don't max the Dude's credit card out. :)

Well, I had better get going. I wouldn't want any of those forts to get loose and run around all maverick-like.

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

They run it in slow motion at the end so you can see her, and the inset window shows the snake coming down from the top."

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

Another week gone by--and this one with preoccupations of the Plutonian variety.

I was really trying to do some drawing this week, but I only managed to whip out some rough sketches of Pluto surface features.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

Last week at chat the Dude talked about Cormorants, saying they are at the coast and he expected to be
seeing some this week. Double Crested Cormorants are common on both the east and west coasts,
and I know that they live near both fresh and salt water, and I guessing that fish is their favorite food.

This first picture features an immature Double Crested, taken at Huntington Beach State Park in SC.

This second picture is of a group we saw at Brick Pond Park, SC, just a few miles from us.

This third picture is of a Pelagic Cormorant (note the white spot) that lives only on the west coast.

This one taken at Shelter Cove, CA. Enjoy!

Bonus Photos!

CC's cousin Joff (aka Jonathan) and her Aunt Marfa (aka Sewla or Martha) just returned from a trip to the Grand Canyon.

Joff is quite the picture taker (we think he should be published) and we've included two of them here.

Zorro's Word
of the Week

INFRANGIBLE

Pronunciation:  \in-FRAN-juh-bul\

adjective

Definition of INFRANGIBLE

1: not capable of being broken or separated into parts
2: not to be infringed or violated

EXAMPLES

He declared firmly that he lived his life by a set of infrangible ethical principles.

"[James Bond] is content enough with his new freedom on the fringe to make it a permanent lifestyle,

but it's his infrangible sense of duty to country and M that brings him back to the fold when both are threatened."

— Kirk Baird, Toledo (Ohio) Blade, November 9, 2012

DID YOU KNOW?

Infrangible comes to us via Middle French from the Late Latin infrangibilis, and it is ultimately derived

from the prefix in- and the Latin verb frangere, meaning "to break." (Believe it or not, our break is

ultimately derived from the same ancient word that gave rise to frangere.)

Infrangible first appeared in print in English in the 16th century with the literal meaning "impossible to break";

it was later extended metaphorically to things that cannot or should not be broken.

Word Family Quiz: Unscramble the letters to create a verb that derives from Latin frangere and means

"to cut a furrow in (as a column)":

 MRCEHAF

The answer is ...

Chamfer
