Channel Links

Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
A very happy first weekend of August to you all! It seems shocking to be able to say it is August already. Time seems to be just roaring by on me here.

It has been a very lively week here, what with one thing or another. There have been fires raging all around us, and the other day the Wragg Fire (about ten miles to the northwest of our house) jumped its containment lines and sent up a fresh column of smoke. They got that beaten back down pretty fast, and now that fire is nearly contained. We had a bit of a heatwave in the middle of the week (got to 108 degrees here), so between that and the ultra-low humidity, and several fires expanded. The big one of concern right now is called the Rocky Fire. This is about 50 miles to the north of us, in the area right around Clear Lake. The fire went from around 25,000 acres last night to 47,000 now. A lot of homes have been lost already, and they only have around 5% containment on it. This is going to be a long, nervous summer for California.

I went to the doctor (for the gout, which is still being a problem) on Thursday, and I have yet more medication to take. This stuff really leaves me drowsy, so I have to be careful about when I take it. I've been trying to get set up with a blood test, so that I can get onto a management program, but it still hasn't happened. Apparently I have to get past the gout flare-up, else it will throw the results off. That's why I'm medicating it like crazy this weekend, because I'm hoping to be able to go to the lab tomorrow. I don't feel any pain in my foot at the moment, and that's the way it needs to be to get this test done. Of course, with all this medication, I probably wouldn't feel anything if I were to drop a bowling ball on it.

At long last, the construction of my vapor chamber is complete. Now I just need to get the wiring on the motor completed, and I think it is ready for trials. This project took so long because I just haven't had much time to work on it. Zorro has been sleeping in it for a few days now. He likes the windows, though the view is much the same as he already had--the inside of my office. I still think he is lobbying for a mouse box.

But mostly this week has been a lot of work, work, work. I've been trying to wrap up this Quaker project by today because the editor is taking off for a trip next week, and we need to get something in front of the client for them to look at. My art pieces have been fun to work on, and I think will present well.

And speaking of said art pieces, I need to get back to it. I'm having to finish some of that as well as try to get some materials together for tonight's broadcast. So I hope to see you there!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. This last week one of her longest friends from school passed away suddenly. Jes is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  Littleguys', aka Carlynne's, recovery has gone well.  She sends her apologies for missing VacaChat but Ustream won't allow her to chat...or even see chat.  She gets to post in MollyMovieNight on Fridays in Ustream, but that uses the Social Stream part of Ustream.  And occasionally she posts in the Social Stream part of VacaChat, just to say hi.  So we may not see her, but she does think of us.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 7/20).

The merit hearing that was supposed to be held on June 18th was cancelled and I'm still awaiting the information on its reschedule date. I'm still able to talk with my parents by phone as long as I provide the code assigned by DSS and don't call too frequently. Thankfully most of the calls have been from my parents when they can get someone to help dial the phone. To my knowledge I am the only family member allowed to call in to my parents. I do know my parents' next-door neighbor was allowed to visit them last week.

Mom and dad are both unhappy there and want to be with me. My lawyer has taken the attitude (due to money, I think) to just wait for my sister to make allegations or other legal "emergency" before doing anything. I would truly like to get moving on my parents being able to be with me or at least in a place where I can get to them to spend time with them. I'm concerned with the passing of time because of my parents ages. It is heartbreaking to me to be locked away by the state and not able to see or live with family who loves you and wants to be with you for as long as God allows. I can't think of anything worse than being ill or dying and having no family to be with you to show their love and help you through those times.

DSS has left my parents there with nothing. They don't have any of their personal things, furniture or clothes. Mom has been without her prescription eyeglasses since she left them at my sister's when she and my father were taken out of my sister's house by DSS. They complain about the food both how bad it is and how little they do get. They don't get any exercise either to help them keep up their strength.

Physically I am hanging in there, mentally/emotionally I am fighting depression and feelings of despair. It seems no one can or will help me to get my parents nor help with getting my house back and/or housing assistance.

My house was broken into a couple weeks ago. The door was kicked in to break the deadbolt lock. A neighbor called me a week ago to let me know my door was open. I called the Lexington Sheriff's department. I asked them if they could secure the door and also notify my sister. I don't know what is still there but there was a washer, dryer, two refridgerators and a freezer. No one can do anything since my sister has my father's POA. She has done nothing to protect my house/my father's property.

My birds are here with me and they are all I have to hold onto until I can get my parents. I keep fighting the feeling that I have lost my parents before they pass away. It is a horrible feeling, not to be allowed to be with the parents you love and want to be with at a time in their lives when they need their family/loved ones to be there for them. It is terrible to be denied to be with loved ones before they die and knowing the day will come and you will never be able to spend time or love them on this earth ever again. It should be against the law to do it even for a state! I've lost close personal friends that I was very close to wiithout being able to see them for a last good-bye and it still hurts. I do not want the next time I am able to be with them to be in the funeral home. My parents worked hard to provide for my sister and myself after they were gone and it breaks my heart for them to be put in a home by the state of SC and I can't be with them or have them with me. My mother was with me and had good care until my cousin picked her up and took to my sister's house. My sister was able to keep my father from my mother and myself for over a year (until I called for a welfare check for my mother when she was taken to my sister's house).

Please pray for me to find an attorney who can and will help me get custody of my parents. Also, for me with both a job and house. Everything that I still have is in storage. I'm renting an apartment paying full rent (which is a bit more than I get each month with my Social Security disability) since my sister has cost me my Section 8 housing assistance. I need to get my things out of storage as that is costing me each moth as well. I do not want to have to sell everything. I know things are not important but I feel like I have to have some part of my life before this to cling to.

Please forgive me for this rambling but heartfelt e-mail. I believed my parents and thought I had a house and the only hard part would be having to deal with their death when the time came. In a way it feels like the state and my sister have taken my parents and my life. I don't want to lose my parents before the Lord takes them from me.

Please pray for me, for God's guidance (that I would hear it and follow it), for His strength, and for His help. I need to be able to get this job coming up. Due to health problems it has been awhile since I have worked. so I need to get my skills up-to-date, the strength and the stamina to do the job. I need an affordable place to live, preferably with my birds, bunnies and parents. I'm still having to deal with everything to do with my parents and SC. I know God is there for me but some (most) days it sure would be nice to have a shoulder to cry on or someone to hold me and tell me everything is going to be all right and make me believe it.

My love to all of my Molly/Vacafamily and Friends.

Love you all,
GentleDoe

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. It sure has been smoky around here lately. Usually that would make me check on the Dude in the garage to make sure he wasn't having an accident out there, but this has all been coming in from the outside. Lots of fires going on around California. I sure hope the critters can all get out of the way and make it to safety!

Of course, the smoke is a lot better for me since I moved into my new apartment! Yes, the Dude still calls it a vapor chamber, but to me it is a spiffy new duplex. The fan in there works great, though the Dude has been having troubles with the electronics for the motor, so I have to turn the fan by hand for the time being. It kind of defeats the purpose. But it sure is cozy. Even has a lot of headroom! (That's important for one whose ears are as big as mine are.)

I hope everyone can make it out to the StoryTime writing session at 3pm PDT today--that way I'll have something very fun to read on the broadcast tonight!

I hope to see y'all there!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

It's that time of year again! The time when the world is overrun by zucchini. Whether

you grow them in your own garden, hit up one of the many roadside stands, or are a victim

of a nighttime drive-by squashing, it seems everyone has an overabundance of squash. So here

are a few more of our favorite ways to prepare zucchini.

The Simplest Zucchini Snack

We can't get enough of these!

  Ingredients:

1 zucchini, sliced thin (¼-inch or less)

Grated Parmesan cheese (fresh is best, but you can use the dry stuff in the green bottle if you HAVE to)

Garlic and/or onion powder (optional)

Freshly ground black pepper (optional)

  Directions:
Place oven rack in center position of oven. Preheat to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with foil (lightly misted with cooking spray) OR parchment paper.

Wash and dry zucchini, and cut into ¼-inch thick slices. Arrange zucchini rounds on prepared pan, with little to no space between them. If desired, lightly sprinkle zucchini with garlic and/or onion salt and freshly ground black pepper. Use a small spoon to spread a thin layer of Parmesan cheese on each slice of zucchini. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until Parmesan turns a light golden brown. (Watch these closely the first time you make them and pull them out of the oven early if the Parmesan is golden before 15 minutes!) Serve immediately.

Chocolate Chip Zucchini Cookies

  Ingredients:

1 cup butter, room temperature
2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs, beaten
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups grated zucchini
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

  Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

In the bowl of stand mixer with paddle attachment and on medium speed, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

With mixer on low, add the egg. Once incorporated, add flour, baking soda, and salt into the butter mixture, gradually; mix well.

Stir in the zucchini. (Before adding, try to squeeze out excess water, but not drain zucchini entirely.)

Fold in and chocolate chips by hand.

Chill dough for 1-2 hours.

Using a small ice cream scoop or a tablespoon, drop cookies onto a cookie sheet with two inches between each cookie.

Bake for 10-13 minutes, or until golden around the edges. Do not over-bake!

Let stand to cool for 2 to 3 minutes, then remove and place on wire racks to allow to cool completely.

Garlic and Onion Cheddar Zucchini Pancakes

  Ingredients:
2 cups shredded zucchini (excess moisture squeezed out with paper towels, but doesn't have to be completely dry - just the excess removed)
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 small onion, minced
2-3 tablespoons of minced garlic (you can also use 1.5 tablespoons garlic powder)
Minced jalapeños and/or hot sauce, to taste (optional)
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1¾ cups buttermilk baking mix (like Bisquick)
Vegetable oil to cover bottom of pan or griddle
Salt and pepper to taste
Sour cream and green onions to top (optional)

  Directions:
In a large bowl, combine the zucchini, cheese, onion, garlic, jalapenos/hot sauce if using, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the eggs and baking mix.

Pour enough oil in a skillet or griddle to cover the bottom & heat on medium high heat. Once the oil is hot, scoop the batter into the pan in ½ cup size portions (or use less or more depending on how big or small you'd like your pancakes to be).

Cook until browned, about 4 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels or a wire rack over a baking sheet. Season with salt to taste while still hot.

Serve by themselves or top with sour cream and green onions - or serve alongside ranch dressing.

  Zucchini Ricotta Quiche

  Ingredients:
1 prepared pie crust (enough for a 9-inch pie plate)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 medium zucchin, sliced in uniformly thin slices (no thicker than ¼ inch; approximately 3 cups)
4 large eggs
1 cup ricotta cheese
½ cup milk
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon oregano
several grinds of pepper
1 cup mozzarella cheese (separated into two ½ cup portions)
2 tablespoons walnuts, coarsely chopped

  Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 400°F. Roll the prepared pie crust out and place in a 9-inch pie plate and flute the edges. Set aside.

In a medium-sized frying pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion, and cook until softened and translucent, around 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute.

Add the zucchini and cook, stirring often, for 5-10 minutes, or until cooked through. Remove from heat.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Add the ricotta and milk, and mix until smooth. Stir in the salt, garlic powder, oregano, pepper, and ½ cup of mozzarella cheese.

Spread out the zucchini/onion/garlic mixture into the prepared pie crust (you may wish to set aside half of the zucchini slices to arrange over the top as in the picture). Pour the egg/ricotta mixture over top. Arrange zucchini slices around the edge of the quiche (if desired), sprinkle the top of the quiche with remaining mozzarella, and with the walnuts.

Bake for 30-40 minutes, until top is slightly golden, and quiche is cooked through the middle.

Cool for 10 minutes before serving.

  Zucchini Brownies

  Ingredients:
  Zucchini Brownie
   ¼ cup vegetable oil
   ¾ cups white sugar
   1 teaspoon vanilla extract
   1 cup all-purpose flour
   ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
   1 teaspoon baking soda
   ½ teaspoon salt
1 cup zucchini, finely grated and drained
Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies

½ cup butter, room temperature
   1 cup granulated sugar
   1 egg, beaten
   2 cups all-purpose flour
   1 teaspoon baking soda
   ½ teaspoon salt
1 cup zucchini, finely grated and drained
   1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
16 Oreos (or as many as you need to fit your pan)

  Directions:
  Zucchini Brownie
In a large bowl, mix together the oil, sugar and vanilla until well blended.

Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Stir into the oil mixture.

Fold in the zucchini.

Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies
In the bowl of your stand mixer, cream your butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

With the mixer on low, add the egg.

Turn mixer off and add in flour, baking soda, and salt into the butter mixture. Turn the mixer on low and allow it to incorporate ingredients. Remove when dough has almost come together, about 30 seconds to 1-minute later. It will be very dry.

Remove bowl from mixer and add in zucchini and chocolate chips. Stir by hand until combined.

Assembly
Prepare a 9x9-inch square pan with baking spray and/or parchment. If you have a springform pan that is great.

Prepare cookie dough (and chill) then prepare brownie batter.

Cover bottom of pan with chocolate chip cookie dough. If dough is chilled, you can flatten it with a drinking glass to ensure an even layer. (If dough is room temperature it should be easily spreadable with your hand.)

Place Oreo's on top of cookie dough. Get as many as you can into the pan without overlapping.

Pour brownie batter over Oreo's and cookie dough.

Bake for 30-45 minutes, or until center is not raw.

Ketaki sent this in. She says, "I saw it live when it happened and it was so fast. It's too bad she didn't kill it and feed to the owlets. They could have used the food, and the snake, a rat snake, is non-venomous. But she was intent on protection. They run it in slow motion at the end so you can see her, and the inset window shows the snake coming down from the top."

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

Another week gone by--and this one with preoccupations of the Plutonian variety.

I was really trying to do some drawing this week, but I only managed to whip out some rough sketches of Pluto surface features.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

Well, it looks like one of the pics we posted last week didn't quite make it. So we're including them again, along with
a new pic from Sharoot's backyard.

This is one of my favorite shots of a Coastal Redwood tree.

I had no idea that these trees have needles instead of leaves!

This one comes from our yard. I call it “Ready, Set, Go!”
What you cannot see is Super Mom standing on top of the box encouraging her last chick to fledge.

She was hopping, dancing and chittering, flying from our roof to the nestbox and back, putting on quite a show.

I call her Super Mom because the Daddy Bluebird went missing shortly after she laid her eggs,

this being their 3rd clutch of the season. She raised the three chicks of this clutch all by herself.

This little guy did not want to leave the comfort of home - his siblings fledged 3 and 4 days earlier.

He finally joined the rest of the family just a moment or two after my husband took this photo.

We actually have the fledge on video, but it would make you seasick to watch it.

My husband needs to practice holding his camera steady during such excitement as this!.

NASA planned a mission that involved three astronauts spending two years in space. Because of the extended duration, each was allowed to take 200 pounds of baggage, with no restrictions.

The first astronaut decided to take along his wife. The second decided to take along books to learn how to speak German. The third astronaut decided to take along cigarettes.

Two years later, when the space shuttle landed, there was a big crowd waiting to welcome them home. First came the first astronaut and his wife and each of them had a baby in their arms.

Next, out came the second astronaut speaking fluent German.

Both Astronauts gave their speeches and got a rousing applause.

Suddenly, out came the third astronaut with a cigarette in his mouth.

He walked up to the podium, snarled to the crowd, and shouted, "Anybody got a match?"

Checking the menu, a restaurant customer ordered a bowl of vegetable soup. After a couple of spoonfuls, he saw a circle of wetness right under the bowl on the tablecloth. He called the waitress over and said, "It’s all wet down here. The bowl must be cracked." The waitress said, "You ordered vegetable soup, didn’t you?" "Yes." "Maybe it has a leek in it!"

Zorro's Word
of the Week

THRASONICAL

Pronunciation:  \thray-SAH-nih-kul\

adjective

Definition of THRASONICAL

of, relating to, resembling, or characteristic of Thraso : bragging, boastful

EXAMPLES

S

"There was never any thing so sudden but the fight of two rams and Caesar's thrasonical brag of

'I came, saw, and overcame'…."

— William Shakespeare, As You Like It, 1623

"After pages of thrasonical twaddle sprinkled with fawning photos, charts and esoteric columns

of numbers I learned only of the flawless perfection of the university...."

— Peter B. Fletcher, Ann Arbor (Michigan) News, December 16, 2003

DID YOU KNOW?

Thraso was a blustering old soldier in the comedy Eunuchus, a play written by the great Roman dramatist

Terence more than 2,000 years ago. Terence is generally remembered for his realistic characterizations,

and in Thraso he created a swaggerer whose vainglorious boastfulness was not soon to be forgotten.

Thraso's reputation as a braggart lives on in thrasonical, a word that boasts a 450-year

history as an English adjective.

Name That Synonym: Unscramble the letters to create a synonym of thrasonical:

 NUALUFTV.

 The answer is …

Vauntful
