Channel Links

Channel Links

The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat. However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh without losing both chat and video.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend, or what is left of it. My life has pretty much consisted of working this week, with the exception of one night out on Thursday. So I'll touch on an area where things are REALLY happening, and that is SPACE!

This last week the Russians sent up a rocket with three folks aboard, so that doubled the size of the crew of the ISS. It was nice to see Mark Kelly get some more visitors (he's the American astronaut who is spending a year on the ISS). The rocket took off fine, and within a few hours the newbies were floating around inside the space station.

Things have been a bit depressing over at the ESA (European Space Agency). They put their Rosetta probe in orbit around a comet, then sent a lander (Philae) down to the nucleus of the comet to land. Well, it bounced, and came down in a dark area so its batteries drained. Didn't hear from it for months, then a couple of weeks ago it woke up, much to everyone's delight. But now it seems all is not well for the lander, as its transmissions are very sporadic. They are not sure what is going on, but it could have much to do with the very volatile nature of what is going on with that comet. As it gets closer to the Sun, it is getting more and more active. That poor lander might be getting knocked around by jets of steam, boulders rolling around--who knows? With the spotty communications, they aren't really able to get a fix on what the problem is. It has been a roller coaster ride, to be sure.

But then the big success story of the month just keeps on trucking--the New Horizons space probe continues to send data back to Earth from its fly-by of the dwarf planet Pluto. The had their weekly press conference on Friday, and the big announcement was that they believe they are seeing glaciers on Pluto. There is a huge store of Nitrogen (probably beneath the surface) that is upwelling in one area, and it is creeping into other areas--making for some really beautiful markings on Pluto's surface. Pluto has not failed to impress--it seems there are surprises around every bend on that icy planetoid!

And lastly, another program held a press conference on Thursday, and that was for the Kepler Space Telescope mission. This is a small scope in orbit that is being used to try to locate exoplanets (planets orbiting stars other than our own Sol). This press conference yielded two big announcements. One, that they have discovered a planet (Kepler 452b) one and a half times bigger than Earth, but orbiting in the same location as Earth and around a star very similar to our Sun! This marks the closest we have seen to an Earth-like planet out there. They figure that this place would most likely have liquid water, rocky lands, and even active volcanoes. In fact, if we were to load up an Ark with plants and animals, the plants would probably grow there. The second announcement was talking about the automation they have been able to employ in going through the Kepler data. When they launched the Kepler six years ago, they were hoping to find evidence of planets orbiting some of the stars out there. Well, what this automation has yielded is a surprise. Not only are we finding planets orbiting some of the stars out there, but just about ALL of them! And they figure that in around 15 to 20 percent of the systems they have found have planets that we call "Earth-like." This just means rocky (as opposed to the gas giants) and in a zone with regard to the host star that would result in surface temperatures that could support life as we know it.

That last part really blew me away. As a kid, I used to gaze out at the sky and wonder if there were any planets out there. Now I can look at the sky and know that most every pinpoint of light I see probably has something orbiting around it! So it just stands to reason that the chances are pretty good that there is some intelligent life out there somewhere in all that! And the funny thing is, as we look out there, we are looking back in time. Depending on how far away the star is, we are seeing it from an earlier date. So if a star is 2,000 light years away, we are seeing things there as they were back when Jesus was a kid! And this new planet we discovered--Kepler 452b--if someone were on that planet with a very strong telescope, and they trained it on Earth...they are 1400 light years away, so they would be seeing us as we were back in the year 615 a.d.!! Kind of boggles the mind...

SO all the spacey things aside, I did manage to do one other fun thing this week. Mary and I went down to San Jose to attend a Rush concert! We got tickets for this thing months ago, and it may well be the last time we will get to see them live. They have hinted at quitting before, but I am beginning to think they are serious about it this time. The show was a look back in time, from their latest material and working back to their beginning. And several times in the show they thanked all their fans for 40 years of support. That sure is a long time! That's how long they have been together and cranking out great music. So it was a bittersweet concert, but we had a great time! And at some point I hope to be able to hear normally again. (Yes, it was really loud! We even put plugs in our ears to cut down the high frequency volume, and it was still very loud.)

So that's about it for me! This week is going to be a bit crazy as I have until the end of the month to get my project for the Quaker school done. So it is a race to the finish.

Anyway, I hope to see you next weekend, as we get together for the latest VacaChat!
Cheers, VacaDude

Jes Jes has requested prayers. This last week one of her longest friends from school passed away suddenly. Jes is also facing some rather daunting medical tests and procedures. She is, of course, worried and stressed, and in need of all our prayers and healing vibes.

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  Littleguys', aka Carlynne's, recovery has gone well.  She sends her apologies for missing VacaChat but Ustream won't allow her to chat...or even see chat.  She gets to post in MollyMovieNight on Fridays in Ustream, but that uses the Social Stream part of Ustream.  And occasionally she posts in the Social Stream part of VacaChat, just to say hi.  So we may not see her, but she does think of us.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 7/20).

The merit hearing that was supposed to be held on June 18th was cancelled and I'm still awaiting the information on its reschedule date. I'm still able to talk with my parents by phone as long as I provide the code assigned by DSS and don't call too frequently. Thankfully most of the calls have been from my parents when they can get someone to help dial the phone. To my knowledge I am the only family member allowed to call in to my parents. I do know my parents' next-door neighbor was allowed to visit them last week.

Mom and dad are both unhappy there and want to be with me. My lawyer has taken the attitude (due to money, I think) to just wait for my sister to make allegations or other legal "emergency" before doing anything. I would truly like to get moving on my parents being able to be with me or at least in a place where I can get to them to spend time with them. I'm concerned with the passing of time because of my parents ages. It is heartbreaking to me to be locked away by the state and not able to see or live with family who loves you and wants to be with you for as long as God allows. I can't think of anything worse than being ill or dying and having no family to be with you to show their love and help you through those times.

DSS has left my parents there with nothing. They don't have any of their personal things, furniture or clothes. Mom has been without her prescription eyeglasses since she left them at my sister's when she and my father were taken out of my sister's house by DSS. They complain about the food both how bad it is and how little they do get. They don't get any exercise either to help them keep up their strength.

Physically I am hanging in there, mentally/emotionally I am fighting depression and feelings of despair. It seems no one can or will help me to get my parents nor help with getting my house back and/or housing assistance.

My house was broken into a couple weeks ago. The door was kicked in to break the deadbolt lock. A neighbor called me a week ago to let me know my door was open. I called the Lexington Sheriff's department. I asked them if they could secure the door and also notify my sister. I don't know what is still there but there was a washer, dryer, two refridgerators and a freezer. No one can do anything since my sister has my father's POA. She has done nothing to protect my house/my father's property.

My birds are here with me and they are all I have to hold onto until I can get my parents. I keep fighting the feeling that I have lost my parents before they pass away. It is a horrible feeling, not to be allowed to be with the parents you love and want to be with at a time in their lives when they need their family/loved ones to be there for them. It is terrible to be denied to be with loved ones before they die and knowing the day will come and you will never be able to spend time or love them on this earth ever again. It should be against the law to do it even for a state! I've lost close personal friends that I was very close to wiithout being able to see them for a last good-bye and it still hurts. I do not want the next time I am able to be with them to be in the funeral home. My parents worked hard to provide for my sister and myself after they were gone and it breaks my heart for them to be put in a home by the state of SC and I can't be with them or have them with me. My mother was with me and had good care until my cousin picked her up and took to my sister's house. My sister was able to keep my father from my mother and myself for over a year (until I called for a welfare check for my mother when she was taken to my sister's house).

Please pray for me to find an attorney who can and will help me get custody of my parents. Also, for me with both a job and house. Everything that I still have is in storage. I'm renting an apartment paying full rent (which is a bit more than I get each month with my Social Security disability) since my sister has cost me my Section 8 housing assistance. I need to get my things out of storage as that is costing me each moth as well. I do not want to have to sell everything. I know things are not important but I feel like I have to have some part of my life before this to cling to.

Please forgive me for this rambling but heartfelt e-mail. I believed my parents and thought I had a house and the only hard part would be having to deal with their death when the time came. In a way it feels like the state and my sister have taken my parents and my life. I don't want to lose my parents before the Lord takes them from me.

Please pray for me, for God's guidance (that I would hear it and follow it), for His strength, and for His help. I need to be able to get this job coming up. Due to health problems it has been awhile since I have worked. so I need to get my skills up-to-date, the strength and the stamina to do the job. I need an affordable place to live, preferably with my birds, bunnies and parents. I'm still having to deal with everything to do with my parents and SC. I know God is there for me but some (most) days it sure would be nice to have a shoulder to cry on or someone to hold me and tell me everything is going to be all right and make me believe it.

My love to all of my Molly/Vacafamily and Friends.

Love you all,
GentleDoe

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! We heard from Shari recently. She is now on the VacaNews mailing list, so we'll be able to keep in touch with her more easily. She tells us, "Hi guys! Shari in Memphis is alive. I've been having tons of health problems, so that's tons of doc appointments! I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse, here. I am here, reporting to you from the cool confines of the Dude's office. Better to be in here than outside--especially in the coming week! It's going to get toasty.

So I've been watching all of the spacey stuff with the Dude, and it got me to thinking. I realized long ago that the Moon was not actually made of cheese. A mouse can hope, but hope don't fill my belly. So I've decided to build a little satellite of my own, and I hope to make it small enough that I can deploy it using the Steampunk Rocket. I'm calling it the Z-5000 Cheesefinder! (The Z is for Zorro, of course!) Its mission will be to seek out any orbiting moons or planets that might consist of yummy cheese. And once I find one, I am going to hook a nice trailer up to the Rocket and get out there! I hope to be able to bring back enough of it to last me a lifetime. I might have to leave it in Earth orbit--that would probably keep it cold enough that it wouldn't spoil. I'd hate to bring a ton of cheese down to Earth and just have it go bad before I can eat it all!

Remember, next week is StoryTime, so please come on by the chat room on Sunday at 3pm PDT (6pm for you Easties) and help write the story that I will read on the broadcast a few hours later (at 6pm PDT). It should be lots of vun!

Until next week--hope you have a great week!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Daddy's Harvest Casserole

  Ingredients

1 zucchini, sliced thin (¼-inch or less)
1-2 large tomatoes, sliced thin
1 yellow squash, sliced thin
1 sweet or yellow onion, sliced thin
Parmesan cheese (fresh is best, but the stuff in the green can is okay)
1-2 pounds lean ground beef, cooked and drained well
Sliced mozzarella cheese
Salt, pepper and garlic powder, to taste

  Directions

In a baking dish, layer sliced zucchini, overlapping a bit to fully cover the bottom of the dish.

Add a layer of sliced tomatoes. Salt the tomatoes to taste.

Add a layer of yellow squash, overlapping as needed to make a complete layer.

Sprinkle liberally with Parmesan cheeses (I like to fully cover the squash).

Add a layer of sliced onions. Sprinkle liberally with garlic powder.

Brown ground beef, adding salt and pepper to taste. Drain well.

Layer beef over onions.

Add a layer of thinly sliced mozzarella. (Sprinkle with additional Parmesan, if desired.)

Place in a 400°F oven and bake 30-45 minutes, or until vegetables are soft and the cheese is melted and nicely browned on top.

Enjoy.

*Other ingredients can be added, as desired. Daddy often included a layer of thinly slice eggplant, sliced celery, chopped broccoli or cauliflower. Some like to add a layer of mushrooms.

*If you want some extra flavor, omit the salt and sprinkle the tomatoes with finely ground beef bouillon.

S'mores Lasagna

  Ingredients:

1 package instant chocolate pudding (3.4oz)
1¾ cup milk
1 container Cool Whip (8oz)
1 jar marshmallow crème fluff (7oz)
1 cup mini marshmallows - toasted
2 packages chocolate graham crackers
1 package graham crackers
2 cups heavy whipping cream
2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar
2 tablespoons sweetened cocoa powder
24 large marshmallows (optional)
Hot fudge sauce for drizzle (optional)

  Ingredients:

Start by mixing the instant chocolate pudding with milk. Whisk until pudding mix is dissolved. Refrigerate until firm; about 10 minutes.

In a mixing bowl, combine the Cool Whip and marshmallow crème. Beat until smooth.

Using a heat proof bowl, microwave mini marshmallows for 10 seconds. Use a kitchen torch with a low flame to gently toast the marshmallow. Beat into Cool Whip and Marshmallow crème mixture.

Line a 9x13” pan with tin foil or parchment paper. Lay down a layer of chocolate graham crackers on the bottom of the pan. Try and cover all edges evenly. Do not break apart the larger pieces until you need to fill in the cracks.

Take ⅓ of your marshmallow Cool Whip and gently spread over the bottom layer of graham crackers.

Next spread half of the pudding mix onto the top of the marshmallow Cool Whip.

Make the next layer using regular graham crackers. Try and cover all edges evenly.

Take another ⅓ of your marshmallow Cool Whip and gently spread over this layer of graham crackers followed by the remaining pudding.

Make the next layer using chocolate graham crackers. Try and cover all edges evenly.

Use the remaining marshmallow crème mixture to gently spread over the top of the chocolate graham crackers.

Make the chocolate whipped cream by using a stand mixer. Beat the cream on med-high for a few minutes until bubbly. Add 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of sweetened cocoa powder. Beat until stiff peaks form. If the whipped cream is too bitter, add an additional tablespoon of powdered sugar. Spread whipped cream on top of the last layer.

Refrigerate for 2-4 hours to allow each layer to set.

You can top the lasagna with a layer of toasted marshmallows if you desire. Use a piece of parchment paper or microwave-safe plate. Microwave in groups of 10 for 10-15 seconds until soft. Move them with a knife onto the top of the lasagna. Use a kitchen torch on low flame to gently toast the marshmallows.

Drizzle with hot fudge and leftover graham crackers crumbs.

Ketaki sent this in. She says, "I saw it live when it happened and it was so fast. It's too bad she didn't kill it and feed to the owlets. They could have used the food, and the snake, a rat snake, is non-venomous. But she was intent on protection. They run it in slow motion at the end so you can see her, and the inset window shows the snake coming down from the top."

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

Another week gone by--and this one with preoccupations of the Plutonian variety.

I was really trying to do some drawing this week, but I only managed to whip out some rough sketches of Pluto surface features.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

My caboose goes back to California today.  We took SO many pix, hope I don’t bore you with them…
(Not a chance, Sharoot!)

This is one of my favorite shots of a Coastal Redwood tree.

I had no idea that these trees have needles instead of leaves!

Next is a bird that we don’t have here on the east coast.

This Violet Green Swallow was nesting in a birdhouse next to the gift shop at the

Drive Through Tree in Myers Flat, CA.  Unfortunately this photo does not show the iridescence of the feathers.

It was a beautiful bird.  And very busy catching insects for the classic “fling & fly”.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

What did the firefly say when he saw his son for the first time?
“He's bright for his age, isn't he.”

What do you call a cow spying on another cow?
A steak out.

There's a scuba diving geologist who has made it his business to measure the relative sizes of the rises, drops, cavities and undulations of coral formations. Of course this can only be done in the summer months so he takes the winters off to avoid the frigid air. You may tag him as a frost-free reef ridge rater.

It's a sunny morning in the Big Forest and the Bear family is just waking up. Baby Bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the table. He looks into his small bowl. It is empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he squeaks.

Daddy Bear arrives at the table and sits in his big chair. He looks into his big bowl. It is also empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he roars.

Mommy Bear points her finger through the door from the kitchen and yells, "For Pete's sake, how many times do we have to go through this? It was Mommy Bear who got up first. It was Mommy Bear who woke everybody else in the house up. It was Mommy Bear who unloaded the dishwasher from last
night and put everything away. It was Mommy Bear who went out in the cold early morning air to fetch the newspaper. It was Mommy Bear who set the table. It was Mommy Bear who put the cat out, cleaned the litter box and filled the cat's water and food dish. And now that you've decided to come downstairs and grace me with your presence ... listen good because I'm
only going to say this one more time ... I haven't made the stupid porridge yet!"

Zorro's Word
of the Week

AMPHIBOLOGY

Pronunciation:  \am-fuh-BAH-luh-jee\

noun

Definition of AMPHIBOLOGY

a sentence or phrase that can be interpreted in more than one way

EXAMPLES

Still feeling some of the effects of her recent cold, Tara was bemused

by the amphibology on the café's menu: "Try our soup—you won't get better."

"I have started an amphibology collection: my favourite to date is the garage

that advertises its services with the words: 'Why go anywhere else to be robbed?'"

—Jonathan Ford, Financial Times, July 27, 2012

DID YOU KNOW?

A venerable old word in English, amphibology is from Greek amphibolos (via Late Latin and Latin).

Amphibolos, from amphi- ("both") and ballein ("to throw"), literally means "encompassing" or "hitting at both ends";

figuratively it means "ambiguous." Amphibology is an equivocator's friend. An editor who has been sent an

unsolicited manuscript to critique, for example, might reply, "I shall lose no time in reading your book."

Or a dinner guest who feels the onset of heartburn might say something like, "Ah, that was a meal

I shall not soon forget!" But amphibology’s ambiguity can be unintended and undesirable as well, as in

"When Mom talked to Judy, she said she might call her back the next day." (Who said who might call whom back?)
