Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Greetings from Sunny, hot California. I am pretty sure the air conditioner has been running non-stop since yesterday afternoon, despite my trying to adjust the thermostat to make it go off. We spent most of the week above 100 degrees in the afternoons. Then last night was strange because it was over a hundred, then the sun went down, and around 10pm it only decreased to 73 degrees. Then it started heating up again. (What happened was that a rainless storm front came in and the blanket of clouds held the heat in). By around 1am the temperature had risen back up to 78 degrees. But then it started to slowly lower again. It was doubly nasty, because I couldn't just bed down in front of the fan and sleep. I've had this huge work project and I've been up most of the night working on it. So I ended up using ice packs, spray bottles, portable fans--all just trying to stay cool. Nasty.

Finally morning came, and at around 6am it was 70 degrees outside. So I settled in to watch the latest Space-X resupply mission launch. The countdown went flawlessly--it was a perfect day to fly. The engines lit and off she went. Everything looked fine for about two minutes and twenty seconds, and them BOOM. I pounded the arm of the couch in frustration, as the entire vehicle exploded into hundreds of fragments. So then I went online and started commiserating and comparing notes with folks in the Space Hipsters group on Facebook, and somebody came in and asked if everybody had heard the news--that Chris Squire, one of the founding members of the rock group Yes, had passed away. Well, I've always been a huge Yes fan. Not quite so much as Rush or Pink Floyd, but not far behind.

So I think my bad news buffers are full. I can't process any more. In a way, I think I'm pretty glad I have this big work project, because it takes my mind off things. Without it, I would probably just wander around the house all day and mope.

Of course, this week was certainly eventful. The twin rulings by the Supreme Court over the healthcare and the same-sex marriage--what a way to end the week! But then earlier in the week there were more celebrity deaths: Dick van Patten (from the old sitcom Eight Is Enough, Patrick Macnee (from the old British spy series The Avengers), and then the film score composer James Horner. And as fate would have it, I was experiencing all this news by myself, because Mary had to fly back to Kentucky to take care of some things for her 96 year old Aunt, who suffered a stroke last week. I couldn't go with her because of these work projects, but we talked on the phone every night.

So VacaChick has had a heck of a week, as has her husband VacaDude.

My attack of gout has for the most part subsided. I've been drinking the sour cherry juice every day (Jes's suggestion), and it appears to be manageable. I hope I can keep it down; last week was pretty nasty.

I hope you all have a good week coming up, with good news and reasonable weather. I hope to catch you all on the broadcast next weekend!
Cheers, VacaDude

    Momma Snapper
On south side of house on the slope to the field, Momma is in the center of the photo.

Digging her nest

2nd egg (missed the first one)  She catches it in her back foot and gently lays it down, covering it with sand..

Another egg about 45 sec to a minute later.  Egg size is about that of a ping pong ball, slightly smaller, I'd say.  Her carapace is about 18 inches long.  Doing some reading, puts her about 15-20 years old.  Eggs will start to hatch come around August, about 75-95 days after laying.  If the summer is cool they will hatch as males, if hot then females.  Snappers are not endangered, but are protected in MA.
Yay, Momma Snapper!  You go girl!

All life is precious, I will watch and not disturb the nest.  I'm not greatly fond of Snappers, but she was so intent on what she was doing, I could get pretty close to her, probably about 5-6 feet from her to take these pix.  About an hour after she started laying, she covered the nest, sort of haphazardly, then she ambled down the slope, and I lost her in the field.  I suspect she headed for the river, or maybe back around to the pond about 500 yards towards other houses near the main road.

Jes (and Miss Bailey Miss Bailey is on the web. She was featured on Jes' favorite bookstore's weekly page! Jes says, "Eric Blem just spoke at the store last week for his new book "Legend". It's the oldest family owned bookstore in the U.S. I go weekly to visit and they have treats for the furkids. Dudek always loved to visit and would dash behind the counter looking for his treat."

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

Littleguys  UPDATE:  Littleguys', aka Carlynne's, recovery has gone well.  She sends her apologies for missing VacaChat but Ustream won't allow her to chat...or even see chat.  She gets to post in MollyMovieNight on Fridays in Ustream, but that uses the Social Stream part of Ustream.  And occasionally she posts in the Social Stream part of VacaChat, just to say hi.  So we may not see her, but she does think of us.

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 6/14).

As of this past Thursday, DSS has moved my parents to Summer's Landing assisted living sharing a room together. This coming Thursday, June 18th, there will be a merit hearing. I have sent my South Carolina lawyer the Care Plan for my mother to be returned to me. Ms McDaniel with DSS and the judge will be reviewing it.

My sister continues to keep making allegations against me which keeps me busy answering them all of the time. South Carolina does not require a person to prove their allegations but the person who is accused must prove their innocence! Guess South Carolina law is you are guilty until you prove your innocent!

Please keep me in prayer with the merit hearing. My lawyer has recommended that I be there for that hearing to be able to talk to the judge on my behalf. Also, please be in much prayer that somehow my sister will stop with all of this. I only want my parents to be able to live the rest of their lives in their own home or at least with me and all of us to have peace and stop all of these legal battles.

Prayer is also needed that I can find someone to care for my birds until I can return. There is so much I have to do and so little time to do it. I have to get all of my documentation for both the allegations my sister has against me and for DSS with the care plan for my mother (and possibly my father).

Love you all,
GentleDoe

I have moved to northern Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild animals around! I miss you all.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. Oh man, has it been hot here! It has been reminding me more of my old stomping grounds in San Marcos. The funny thing is, the folks up here are not as used to it, so there has been a lot of complaining this week.

It was sad to see what happened to the rocket ship this morning. I know it is bad for the space program, but I was really mourning the loss of all those yummy groceries. I had been kind of thinking that the Dude might be getting a call from NASA here pretty soon, to see if he could help take some supplies to the ISS with the Steampunk Rocketship. So many of the rocket systems that the two-leggers use have been grounded due to recent accidents. Of course, I would volunteer to help out, but I don't think NASA would be too keen on that. I did it once before, when NASA put me in charge of the re-supply and I had so much cheese on the manifest, but only a small portion of it actually made it up to the ISS. There were all these launch delays, you see, and I was really hungry! All I managed to leave them was a few pounds of Limburger. Well, they didn't appreciate that, especially because it is such a stinky cheese and the ISS is an enclosed space... Well, rest assured they remembered me long after my duties as head grocery wrangler were finished.

We haven't been in the garage much lately because the only time it is tolerable to set foot out there is at around two in the morning. Otherwise, it is just hot as blazes out there. Hopefully this heatwave will cool down soon!

Well, next week will be the StoryTime, so I hope you all can come out for that and for the broadcast in the evening. That's next Sunday--yay!!!

Hope to see you all then!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Today I bring you two tasty low-carb dishes.

Cauliflower Fried "Rice"

  Ingredients

1 head cauliflower
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons minced ginger
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 carrots, diced
1 cup corn, fresh or frozen
1 cup peas, fresh or frozen
4 green onions, thinly sliced
½ cup cashews, almonds or other nuts
4 to 6 tablespoons soy sauce

  Directions

Cut the cauliflower into florets, discarding the tough inner core. Pulse the cauliflower in a food processor until it breaks down into rice-sized pieces.

Cut your carrot and spring onions. Mince your garlic and ginger.

Use cooking spray or olive oil on your pan, add ginger and garlic and fry for 5 min.

Add your carrots and cauliflower rice, mix well.

Add sweet corn, then green peas and mix well.

Add your eggs and cook well, add soy sauce mix and then add cashews and spring onions. Taste and add more soy sauce to taste. Serve immediately. Leftovers will keep refrigerated for about a week.

Turkey Patties

  Ingredients:

4 tablespoons olive oil or cooking spray
2 large onions, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, crushed
2 pounds ground turkey
2 large carrots, grated
1 zucchini, grated
Fresh parsley
2 eggs
2 tablespoons sour cream
Salt and pepper

  Ingredients:

Grate your carrot and zucchini

Use food processor to blend your turkey, onions, garlic and parsley, or cut everything by hand.

Add your meat mixture to zucchini and carrots, add sour cream, egg, season well and mix well.

Spray your pan with low fat spray, add a little bit of butter ( optional) , place around 1½ tablespoons of mixture and fry your turkey patties on both sides for about 5 minutes on medium heat.

Enjoy with salad, rice or mashed potatoes.

From the Dude

One of the Dude's bee photos

"I've been trying for three days, and that was from this morning.

I learned a bit about bees in the process--they don't like to hover in the sun

(probably overheat), but they will do it more in the early morning.

So I went out this morning so when the sun was shining, but the air was still cool.

Then they were a bit more likely to hover over the flowers."

Sharoot shares,

This Red Bellied Woodpecker is getting a mealworm or two for her babies. Nom, nom, nom, burp.

A few years ago a refugee from Laos came to the US in one of the resettlement influxes. He had been an announcer in radio back in Laos, and he wanted to get into the same line of work here. The first thing he did was join AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Announcers). He tried to pursue a job, but of course, he had problems with the English language, being a new resident. In order to keep body and soul together while going to English classes, he took up barbering. Soon, he became a very good barber, giving haircuts, stylings, and shaves. He seemed to be an artist with the straight razor. In fact, the shop where he worked made him specialize in giving shaves.

Thus, he became known as an AFTRA shave Laotian.

Zorro's Word
of the Week

NONAGE

Pronunciation:   \NAH-nij\

noun

Definition of NONAGE

1: minority
2a : a period of youth b : lack of maturity

EXAMPLES

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. …

This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision

and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance."

— Immanuel Kant, "What is Enlightenment?" (1784), translated by Mary C. Smith

"[Adolf] Berle was an amazing person. He entered Harvard College in his nonage,

being only fourteen years old."

— Keith Paul Bishop, National Law Review, October 9, 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

Minority, majority; infancy, adulthood; nonage, full age—here you have the three contrasting pairs that

constitute the vocabulary of legal age. Minority, infancy, and nonage are synonyms that mean "the state or

time of being under legal age." Majority, adulthood, and full age mean "the state or time of being of legal

age." (All these words, particularly infancy and adulthood, have other meanings as well, of course.)

Nonage came to us by way of Middle English from an Anglo-French union of

non- and age, which combine to mean "not of age."
