Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
I hope everybody is enjoying their weekend. It seems like today is my one day off for the weekend, because we spent most of yesterday in San Francisco. I think I mentioned it before (like in chat) that the city of SF is celebrating the centennial of the Panama-Pacific International Expo (PPIE), and yesterday at the Palace of Fine Arts there was a big event. It was supposed to have a lecture by the author of an amazing book about the PPIE, a concert of 1915-era music as well as some brand new compositions dedicated to the centennial, and also the premiere of a film about the PPIE. The film is what we mostly were hoping to see, as I had been in touch with the filmmaker over the course of the past year or so, and I was very much looking forward to seeing the film and meeting him face-to-face.

Well, we made it to the Palace only to learn that Christian (the filmmaker) had some kind of mishap and was delayed in getting from Sacramento to San Francisco, so they were going to change the order around and have the lecturer go first. So this historian gave a great talk about the various forms of entertainment at the PPIE, and after about an hour she wrapped up the Q&A. At that point it was announced that the film was just not going to happen. So I have no idea what went on--I wrote to Christian a little while ago, but I've not heard anything back yet. Such a shame--I know he has been looking forward to this premiere all year! It must be horribly disappointing for him.

So anyway, it was a fascinating day of learning about the PPIE.

I also got to do something fun on Thursday--I had lunch with Sharoot and her husband Mike! They were in California for their first time, and as it turned out they were going to be driving right through Vacaville on their way to see the redwoods. So we grabbed a little lunch, and it was so much fun to meet them!

It was certainly a nice distraction after the week of medical trials. I had mentioned last week that I was having a flare-up of gout. Well, in the early part of the week it got worse, and Tuesday was THE worst. I literally found myself stuck in my living room at 3am. If I lowered my foot below the level of my heart, I was treated to a stabbing, excruciating pain. As you can imagine, keeping your foot elevated higher than your chest is not conducive to a wide range of activities. So I lay on my back and scooched through the house, dragging the Ottoman with me. I was finally able to get to the freezer, get the ice pack, and eventually got the swelling down. But my whole week was more or less like that. Not fun.

However, I have been heeding Jes's advice and I'm drinking tart cherry juice, and with some other adjustments, and the foot is largely better. Now I need to work on getting my uric acid levels down so that it does not keep recurring.

So that's about it for me. Through all that I was working on trying to get my big work project done for the Quaker School, so that pretty much kept me busy.

Have a great week, everyone, and we'll talk with you later!
Cheers, VacaDude

    Momma Snapper
On south side of house on the slope to the field, Momma is in the center of the photo.

Digging her nest

2nd egg (missed the first one)  She catches it in her back foot and gently lays it down, covering it with sand..

Another egg about 45 sec to a minute later.  Egg size is about that of a ping pong ball, slightly smaller, I'd say.  Her carapace is about 18 inches long.  Doing some reading, puts her about 15-20 years old.  Eggs will start to hatch come around August, about 75-95 days after laying.  If the summer is cool they will hatch as males, if hot then females.  Snappers are not endangered, but are protected in MA.
Yay, Momma Snapper!  You go girl!

All life is precious, I will watch and not disturb the nest.  I'm not greatly fond of Snappers, but she was so intent on what she was doing, I could get pretty close to her, probably about 5-6 feet from her to take these pix.  About an hour after she started laying, she covered the nest, sort of haphazardly, then she ambled down the slope, and I lost her in the field.  I suspect she headed for the river, or maybe back around to the pond about 500 yards towards other houses near the main road.

Dudek always loved to visit and would dash behind the counter looking for his treat."

GentleDoe Latest update  from GentleDoe (as of 6/14).

As of this past Thursday, DSS has moved my parents to Summer's Landing assisted living sharing a room together. This coming Thursday, June 18th, there will be a merit hearing. I have sent my South Carolina lawyer the Care Plan for my mother to be returned to me. Ms McDaniel with DSS and the judge will be reviewing it.

My sister continues to keep making allegations against me which keeps me busy answering them all of the time. South Carolina does not require a person to prove their allegations but the person who is accused must prove their innocence! Guess South Carolina law is you are guilty until you prove your innocent!

Please keep me in prayer with the merit hearing. My lawyer has recommended that I be there for that hearing to be able to talk to the judge on my behalf. Also, please be in much prayer that somehow my sister will stop with all of this. I only want my parents to be able to live the rest of their lives in their own home or at least with me and all of us to have peace and stop all of these legal battles.

Prayer is also needed that I can find someone to care for my birds until I can return. There is so much I have to do and so little time to do it. I have to get all of my documentation for both the allegations my sister has against me and for DSS with the care plan for my mother (and possibly my father).

Love you all,
GentleDoe

              Recipe of the Week

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

I hope everybody had a nice week. It was not much fun around here--seeing the Dude hobble around the house. He is usually up and around so much--running from the office to the workshop and back. It's good to see that he is largely back on his feet again (literally).

It was a slow week here for me. It was mostly too hot to go out and work in the garage. I'd swear you could bake cookies out there when the heat gets going. Actually, that sounds like a grand idea! I should try that.

We did have some fun watching the first episode of "The Astronaut's Wives Club" on Thursday. I don't know if the show was very good (the Dude was kind of "meh" about it), but they kept showing up with food--including deviled eggs! I love deviled eggs--yummy! Oh well, I guess we'll watch the 2nd episode next week and see how it goes.

Well, I think I'm going to go watch some more of the golf. It's the U.S. Open, being played up in Washington. I don't know much about golf, but I do like watching the balls roll across the grass and dive into the little hole. It reminds me of my childhood--running across the field and diving into a hole (hopefully before some big bird with sharp talons swoops down and grabs me!)

So have a good week, and I'll talk with y'all later!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Today, I bring you two iconic recipes from the 60s.

Cherry Cola Salad

  Ingredients

1 (20-ounce) can crushed pineapple in heavy syrup, drained with syrup reserved
1 (16-½-ounce) can Bing cherries in heavy syrup, drained and chopped, with syrup reserved
2 (4 serving each) packages cherry-flavored gelatin
1 (12-ounce) can cola
1 cup chopped pecans
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, cut into ½-inch cubes (see *Note)

  Directions

IIn a medium-sized saucepan, bring reserved pineapple syrup and cherry syrup to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from heat and add gelatin, stirring until dissolved.

Add cola and chill 1 hour, or until it starts to thicken. Stir in pineapple, cherries, pecans, and cream cheese and spoon into a medium-sized bowl or gelatin mold.

Chill 3 hours, or until set. When ready to serve, dip bottom of mold in warm water for a few seconds, then invert onto a serving plate larger than mold. Shake gently to loosen from mold.

*Note: The cream cheese should be cut into small chunks so it floats in the gelatin mixture instead of blending into it.

Tunnel of Fudge Cake

  Ingredients:

For the Pan
    1 tablespoon Dutch-processed cocoa powder
    1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
For the Cake
    ½ cup boiling water
    2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
    2 cups flour
    ¾ cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder
    2 cups powdered sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
    5 eggs, at room temperature
    1 tablespoon vanilla
    1 cup sugar
    ¾ cup packed brown sugar
20 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
For the Glaze
    ¾ cup heavy cream
    ¼ cup light corn syrup
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
    ½ teaspoon vanilla
Fresh Raspberries

  Ingredients:

For the Pan
Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder and melted butter. Use a pastry brush to evenly coat the inside of a 12-cup Bundt pan.

For the Cake
In a medium bowl, pour the boiling water over the chopped chocolate. Let stand for a minute, then whisk until smooth. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and salt. Combine the eggs and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup and beat lightly.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and butter. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. With the mixer on low speed, add in the egg mixture just until combined. Add the chocolate mixture and mix until incorporated. Blend in the dry ingredients until just combined.

Spread the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for about 45 minutes or until the edges of the cake begin to pull away from the pan.

Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack for 2 hours before inverting onto a cake platter. Allow to cool completely, about 2 more hours.

For the Glaze
Combine the cream, corn syrup, and chocolate in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until smooth. Blend in the vanilla. Set aside for about 30 minutes, until slightly thickened. Drizzle the glaze over the cake and let set for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Fill the center hole of the cake with fresh raspberries and garnish the top of the cake or the cake plate with additional raspberries.

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

One of the Dude's bee photos

"I've been trying for three days, and that was from this morning.

I learned a bit about bees in the process--they don't like to hover in the sun

(probably overheat), but they will do it more in the early morning.

So I went out this morning so when the sun was shining, but the air was still cool.

Then they were a bit more likely to hover over the flowers."

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

This Red Bellied Woodpecker is getting a mealworm or two for her babies. Nom, nom, nom, burp.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

How do you make a glowworm happy?
Cut off its tail. It'll be delighted.

What did one earthquake say to the other?
"Its all your fault!"

What do you need to start a new bakery business?
A lot of dough.

A guy goes into the doctor's office. There is a banana stuck in one of his ears, a carrot stuck in one nostril, and a cucumber in the other ear. The man says, "Doc, this is terrible. What's wrong with me?" The doctor says, "Well, first of all, you're not eating right."

A cowboy rode into town and stopped at a saloon for a drink.

Unfortunately, the locals always had a habit of picking on strangers. When he finished his drink, he found his horse had been stolen.

He went back into the bar, handily flipped his gun into the air, caught it above his head without even looking and fired a shot into the ceiling.

"Which one of you sidewinders stole my horse?" he yelled forcefully.

No one answered.

"All right, I'm gonna have another beer, and if my horse isn't back outside by the time I finish, I'm gonna do what I done in Texas! And I don't like to have to do what I done in Texas!"

Some of the locals shifted restlessly.

The man, true to his word, had another beer, walked outside, and his horse has been returned to the post. He saddled up and started to ride out of town.

The bartender wandered out of the bar and asked, "Say partner, before you go, what happened in Texas?"

The cowboy turned back and said, "I had to walk home."

Zorro's Word
of the Week

MYTHOMANIA

Pronunciation:   \mith-uh-MAY-nee-uh\

noun

Definition of MYTHOMANIA

an excessive or abnormal propensity for lying and exaggerating

EXAMPLES

The idea of trust is an important theme in the book; the reader is never sure of the extent of the protagonist's mythomania.

"The pathological liar … cannot help lying, even when the lie causes harm. It is this aspect

of mythomania that distinguishes it as an illness rather than a habit."

— Gloria Wall, Journal Review (Crawfordsville, Indiana), April 27, 2012

DID YOU KNOW?

We wouldn't lie to you about the history of mythomania. It comes from two ancient roots, the Greek

mythos (meaning "myth") and the Late Latin mania (meaning "insanity marked by uncontrolled emotion or

excitement"). One myth about mythomania is that it's a very old word; actually, the earliest known uses of the term

date only from the beginning of the 20th century. It was predated by a related word, mythomaniac,

which appeared around the middle of the 19th century. Mythomaniac initially referred to someone who was obsessed

with or passionate about myths, but it was eventually used for individuals affected with or exhibiting mythomania.

Test Your Vocabulary:

What is the meaning of mythopoeia?

The answer is …

a creating of myth : a giving rise to myths
