Channel Links

Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Sunday to you all, and I hope you all had a good week. Been pretty bizzy around here--I am in the final days with my second loaner printer, so I am madly scrambling to finish all of the printing I need to get done in the coming days--until I can make my selection and buy a printer for my very own. Officially I think I am supposed to ship it back on Monday, but I'm hoping to kind of slop it over for a couple of days. (Shhh! Don't tell XYZprinting that!) :)

So as I write this, the printer is over there chirping away happily printing half of a phaser. Actually, it is a Photon Grenade Launcher. What?!? Yeah, that's right. You see, I'm a big Sci-Fi geek, and I love my Star Wars and Star Trek. And in the original series of Trek, they had hand phasers as their weapon of choice. Now their ship, the Enterprise, had phasers it could fire at its enemies, but also something they called "photon torpedoes." Which left me to wonder, if they had figured a way to use photons (light) as an explosive, how come there were never any photon hand grenades?

Now fast forward to 2015. In addition to being a fan of Sci-Fi, I also love strobe lights. (Must be the Disco king in me.) And it just so happens that I have come into the possession of about a dozen strobe circuits that were intended to be used in Kodak film cameras, but when film went away, the cameras went away. So I bought a bunch of flash units from a surplus company that was selling them for about a dollar a piece. Now it is just bare circuit board, transformers, strobe tube, etc. So one of the projects I did when I had the first loaner printer was the creation of a box to put the strobe circuit into. Well, it worked fine, but it was...just a box. Very boring. So suddenly it hit me--what if I designed an enclosure that looked somewhat like the hand phaser, but instead housed a strobe board? Then every time I pull the trigger, it flashes. Then it would be the one weapon they SHOULD have had on Star Trek--the Photon Grenade Launcher! I picture it as acting like a hand-held mortar launcher. You set the distance and hold it up, and with a bright flash it launches its grenade, allowing you to take out that nasty bunch of Klingons or Borg who are shooting at you. Or you can just use it to take out the old tree stump in the backyard. Or you could use it to create light paintings with a camera on long exposure... (wink wink)

Anyway, I'll show you what I mean in the chat tonight. I believe this part should have finished printing by then. I hope so, else it will be a very noisy chat!

Speaking of which, I have some things to prepare for tonight's broadcast, so I'll have to close this up and get bizzy!

Hope to see you then!
Cheers, VacaDude

Ketaki Ketaki shares this wonderful story with us:
    Hi All,
I am grinning from ear to ear.

While making my coffee, I looked out the window, per usual, and saw a hummer, hunkered down, clinging for all it was worth to my feeder's perch. I watched for a few moments, got distracted by the blustery wind stirring up dust devils, watching the seed feeders at 45° angle being blown sideways... I looked back at the feeder, and hummer was still there. Another male flew in and tried to "attack" this clearly unhappy hummer, so I went out to see what was up.

It was a cold nite, last nite for migrating, tired hummers. It was in the barely 40's, with the rain and wind, felt like in the 30's. I wasn't surprised that this hummer looked clearly exhausted, as they are still migrating in. I gently picked him up, he huddled into my palm. I stayed in the sun for a few moments thinking he'd want to fly, but no. He liked where he was.

I brought him into the house, checked him out, wings were drooped, no glisten to his eyes. By this time he rested his beak on my thumb, and just sat there, very quietly. So I snuck in a few photos.

One handed, I got the hummer food out from fridge, warmed a small portion in microwave to room temperature, found an eyedropper, and gave him a drop. Oh, my, he was so hungry. I watched as he drank, drop after drop off my skin, placing each drop either on the end of his beak or on my skin where he rested his beak. I was enjoying watching his little tongue sipping at the food droplets. Then took a couple more pix.

I eventually got tired of putting drops on my thumb and offered the sugar water straight from the dropper. He drank and drank and drank. I finally said, ok. you are sated for now, just rest.

I finished making my coffee, making several trips to my chair, carrying the dropper, coffee (now approaching thermal equilibrium with the room), turned on the PC, all while he was sitting in the palm of my hand. Eventually, he started perking up and moved to the edge of my hand and pooped. That made me happy, from that motion, I got the sense he was a juvie. He still looked small to me, his beak wasn't as long as the pix I looked at on line.

Offering him some more to drink, every 5 minutes or so, figuring he would stop when he was full. He seemed to love the warmth from my hand, perked up some more, re-arranged himself to the edge of my palm again, and pooped. He probably drank at least 3/4 ml of food, in total. I was beginning to think he would burst!

After about an hour of tending him and reading about re-habbing hummers, he fluttered his wings! He was good to go. He looked around, very perky, head up, he moved to edge of my palm, then hopped to my shirt, so I had to quickly cover him with other hand. He came back to my palm, fluttered again, so I carried him back outside, back into the sun. He hopped back on my shirt, buzz-fluttered his wings, and off he went up into the trees!

Bye bye, little one, you made my heart soar! Be well!

I'm still smiling from ear to ear! Happy for this little one! He's made my whole day!

KSBorn KSBorn has sent us an update. She writes, "I’m still in the midst of chemo and hormone blocker every day. In 2008 I had breast cancer and it returned July 2014 same breast cancer in my lung now and 2 lymph nodes positive. I’m getting ready to have a surgery to get a port. I will probably be on chemo for life. I have numerous tests monthly.

Thank you so much for the prayers and please continue."

GentleDoe We received this from GentleDoe this week.

VacaFamily,

The May 19th hearing for mom's guardianship/conservator ship was canceled to give my sister's attorney time to deal with the removal of both parents by DSS. I'm filing for guardianship/conservator ship of both parents. In the meantime I am trying to get mom at least placed back with me. We are MD residents and a cousin took mom from MD and brought her to my sister's in SC. Within 3 days of my mother being with my sister both parents were removed when I contacted the sheriff's department for a welfare check for my mother.

SC DSS (Dept. of Social Services) is looking to put both parents in a nursing home. I'm trying to at least get mom placed with me until guardianship/conservator ship is decided. Both parents are very upset with nursing home prospect. I've told both my lawyer and DSS my parents' are very upset and my concern that with them being alone in a nursing home that it will be detrimental to both their physical and mental health. If they are placed in homes in SC I will not be able to see them. Even if I could stay in SC there is no affordable transportation (only taxi service). Please pray that I will be able to get guardianship/conservator ship for both parents. Also, pray that I can get a 508 job that I can work at remotely so I can be with my parents. Please pray that I can also get my house. Right now my birds are being boarded and I need a house for my birds, parents and myself to live in. I can afford living expenses on my current income if I had my house as the mortgage is paid. Legal expenses are high and will need an ADA lawyer to fight DSS and SC discrimination.

I still have much to do and little transportation or help getting it done. Please continue to pray for me, my parents and my birds/pets. Will try to update you as I am able.

Love you all,
GentleDoe

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. Tonight is VacaChat -- yay!!! It looks as though a lot of people were off doing fun things this weekend, so we didn't have enough people for writing the StoryTime. So tonight we will have a PoetryTime--haven't had a chance to do that for a while! It will give me a chance to brush up on my Iambic Pentameter. I'm not sure what that is, but I am certain it will be delicious if garnished with a bit of gorgonzola.

I was hoping to say that I could Skype the PoetryTime in tonight from my new bachelor pad, but I haven't been able to move in yet. The Dude still has hopes of using it for his acetone vapor thingies. Well, he was having trouble with the air conditioning inside the chamber--er, apartment. So I couldn't really use it without the fan working anyway. It gets really hot in that garage--especially this week! It has been getting rather toasty here this week. Kind of reminds me of old Mexico. Only there we tended to avoid drinking the water...but here, there is no water to avoid!

Oh, and Happy Chocolate Ice Cream Day!!! I don't know if it is officially that, but I saw it on Facebook this morning, and that is official enough for me, I tell ya! Just so happens there is a container of Rocky Road in the freezer, and if you'll excuse me--I hear it calling to me.

See you guys tonight!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Today we share two recipes just made to be served together.

Greek Marinated Chicken

  Ingredients

1 cup plain yogurt
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
½ tablespoon dried oregano
1 medium lemon
½ teaspoon salt
Freshly cracked pepper
¼ bunch fresh parsley
3½-4 pounds chicken pieces

  Directions

To make the marinade, combine the yogurt, olive oil, minced garlic, oregano, salt, and some freshly cracked pepper in a bowl. Use a fine holed cheese grater or a zester to scrape the thin layer of yellow zest from the lemon skin into the bowl. Also add the juice from half of the lemon (about 1-2 tablespoons). Stir until the ingredients are well combined. Roughly chop a big handful, or about ¼ bunch, of parsley and stir it into the marinade.

Add the chicken pieces and marinade to a gallon sized zip top bag. Remove as much air as possible, close the bag tightly, and massage the bag to mix the contents and make sure the chicken is well coated. Refrigerate the bag for at least 30 minutes.

After marinating for 30 minutes, either cook the chicken on a grill OR preheat the oven to 375°F in preparation to bake the chicken.

To bake the chicken, place the chicken pieces in a large casserole dish (9x13). Bake the chicken in the preheated 375°F oven for 45-60 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Lemony Cucumber Couscous Salad

  Ingredients:

1½-2 cups Israeli couscous
2 medium cucumbers
¼ bunch parsley
1 medium lemon
2 tablespoon olive oil
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon salt
Freshly cracked pepper to taste
3 ounces crumbled feta cheese

  Ingredients:

Bring a medium pot of water to a rolling boil. Add the couscous and continue to let it boil for 5-7 minutes, or until the couscous is tender. Drain the couscous in a colander or wire mesh sieve (if the holes in the colander are too big). Rinse briefly with cool water to cool off the couscous, then allow to drain while you prepare the rest of the salad.

Cut the cucumber into quarter rounds and place them in a large bowl. Take a big handful (or about ¼ bunch) of parsley and pull the leaves from the stems. Roughly chop the parsley and then add it to the bowl with the cucumber. Use a fine holed cheese grater or a zester to remove the thin layer of yellow zest from the lemon and add it the bowl with the other ingredients.

Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a small bowl (you should get 2-3 tablespoons of juice). Add the olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and some freshly cracked pepper. Stir to combine and then pour the dressing over the cucumber, parsley, and lemon zest. Stir to combine.

Add the cooled and drained couscous and crumbled feta to the bowl. Gently stir to combine all of the ingredients. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper as needed. Serve immediately or chill until ready to eat.

Notes
If you are substituting regular couscous for Israeli couscous, be aware that the cooking instructions are different. You can substitute orzo, barley or quinoa for the couscous without any adjustments.

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

One of the Dude's bee photos

"I've been trying for three days, and that was from this morning.

I learned a bit about bees in the process--they don't like to hover in the sun

(probably overheat), but they will do it more in the early morning.

So I went out this morning so when the sun was shining, but the air was still cool.

Then they were a bit more likely to hover over the flowers."

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"

We went to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, SC last weekend. Our timing was perfect.
The Swamp Garden has a rookery and we saw Great Blue Herons, a few alligators, Great Egrets,
a few alligators, Little Blue Herons, a few alligators, and Anhingas, all nesting, with everything from
just hatched Egrets, to nearly ready to fledge Great Blues! It was owlsome! We spent most of the day
there, enjoying those beautiful birds. And did I mention we saw a few alligators? We also saw our
first Black Crowned Night Heron in the wild.
Gee, maybe next time we’ll take the time to tour the historic house…..

It’s always hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they’re always taking things literally.

Over breakfast one morning, a woman said to her husband, "I bet you don't know what day this is." "Of course I do," he indignantly answered, going out the door on his way the office. At 10 AM, the doorbell rang, and when the woman opened the door, she was handed a box containing a dozen long-stemmed red roses. At 1 PM, a foil-wrapped, two pound box of her favorite chocolates arrived. Later, a boutique delivered a designer dress. The woman couldn’t wait for her husband to come home. "First the flowers, then the candy, and then the dress!" she exclaimed. "I've never spent a more wonderful Groundhog Day in my whole life!'

Realizing that I had put on a pound or two, I lamented to my husband, "I'm fat."

And right on cue he said what all good husbands must: "You're not fat." To support his position, he added, "Just look around you at others, and you will see that you are not fat."

But our daughter, a high schooler, saw through it: "Mom, he's grading you on the curve!"

Zorro's Word
of the Week

FATIDIC

Pronunciation: \fay-TID-ik\

noun

Definition of FATIDIC

of or relating to prophecy

EXAMPLES

I hope the dream I had last night about losing my wedding ring doesn't prove fatidic.

"Shakespeare strews his plays with portents; Pushkin probes his life for fatidic dates;

but no writer can have been more fascinated by patterns in time than Nabokov."

— Brian Boyd, Stalking Nabokov: Selected Essays, 2011

DID YOU KNOW?

As you might guess, fatidic is a relative of the word fate. The Latin word for fate is fatum,

which literally means "what has been spoken." Fatum, in turn, comes from fari, meaning "to speak."

In the eyes of the ancients, your fate was out of your hands—what happened was up to gods and demigods.

Predicting your fate was a job for oracles and prophets. Fatidic is fatum combined with dicere, meaning

to say." That makes fatidic a relative of the word predict as well; the

-dict of predict also comes from Latin dicere.

Name That Synonym: Fill in the blanks to create a synonym of fatidic: v _ t _ c _ na _.

The answer is …
