Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

I've only gotten photos from a few people. (The new page will be posted sometime this week.) Surely more chatters have pets that they'd like to show to the world!

  Hello Vriends,
A very happy Sunday to you all! It is a very nice one here--I have the window to my office open, and the breeze is making my wooden owl chimes clack in a very arboreal way. It's still early enough in the day that it's not too hot. (I already did the pruning that I needed to do on the tree in front earlier this morning. Even though it was cooler, I worked up a good sweat!) The spring is being nice so far. I just have to not think about how it is going to be come August, where we are all engaged in hand-to-hand combat in a fight to the death for the last few drops of water.

So has anyone heard about this app from Microsoft in which you submit a photo of yourself, and it will analyze that and render a guess as to your age and gender? I was curious last night, so I put my picture into it. It tells me I am a 37 year old woman. Wow. Do I really come across as a younger woman? I mean, I'm flattered that it thought I was younger, but the gender change means my income just dropped by 23 percent!!

I have had some movement in the 3D Printing realm. I had kept sending messages to my contact at XYZprinting, and I never got a response back. Suddenly thinking this person may have left the company, I sent another e-mail on Friday and CC'd every person I had ever corresponded with at XYZ. I immediately got a response back with an apology. They are now saying that the printer will be shipped out first thing Monday morning! So now I am scrambling a bit to prepare for its arrival, and to get back into the production mode.

I am definitely of the opinion that the person I had been working with there left the company...

This week was a very busy one for me, as I had two work projects that I was juggling at the same time. I think I did very well with both, and now I have a couple of nice new pieces to add to my work reel. And a bit of cash in pocket doesn't hurt either.

So today I am going to go do some work on the vapor chamber (before the garage gets too warm to work in), and then get ready for our birthday celebration later this afternoon.

Don't forget to come on by this afternoon for the StoryTime writing, then I'll see you next weekend on our special Mother's Day VacaChat next Sunday evening! Until then, have a great week!
Cheers, VacaDude

Elsa also tells us that she has had a poem selected for publication. She says she is very excited to be a part of this book and feels like a poet in good company, with known authors. Her poem on Great Horned Owls has a page with a beautiful photo opposite. Her writing group helped her with this piece. The book, Secrets of Wisdom by Joyce Gerrish, is now available at Amazon.

KSBorn Does anyone have an update? KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.

VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin UPDATE:  WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!  "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."

TheDaddyBird, TDB is home! He is doing great! All the doctors and nurses are thrilled and amazed at his progress. (One doc said TDB will be their new poster boy.) He's still got a ways to go in his recovery, but being home will help a lot.

CC has appointed herself his personal home health nurse. I am VERY proud of her.

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years.  Pinched nerve.  Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we find out why.  Not the joints.  X-ray, then MRI showed that the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column and go down the leg.  Taking care of it all got delayed.  The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can kill and pinched nerves won't.  Caused weight gain, since I can't walk as much as I used to...LOL

Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back.  Three options.  First one, surgery, no one wants.  Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone.  Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming.  I really need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Caboval Joey has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Please keep Caboval in your prayers.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe We received this from GentleDoe last week.

VacaFamily,

My sister has evicted me from my home that my parents & I purchased together. My sister has gotten POA for my father & is now trying to get POA over my mother. I have been with & caring for my mother since the day dad had his stroke.

Pray that I will be able to get a good attorney to fight for my mother & myself. My sister is claiming I stole a substantial amount of money & contesting my POA for my mother.

I've come to MD for job interviews so that I can fight these legal battles & can find a new home. Hopefully I will get a job that I can work remotely.

For now I need a couple of people to take in my birds temporarily until I can find us a new home. I just can't give up my birds. They are my only family when my parents are gone. Tory has been with me since he was 6 months old & has been with me for almost 20 years. I have 5 birds total: 1 Moluccan cockatoo, 1 sulfur-crested cockatoo, 1 red-front macaw, 1 blue throat macaw & 1 Quaker parrot/parakeet. They are the loves of my life & I just don't think I can take losing them too. I only want this to be temporary & will pay for their food & care. The macaws would be best together in a home but in separate cages. If anyone can help me I can tell them more about each bird. (jan.sc.05@gmail.com)

Please keep me & mom in much prayer. This has been an extremely difficult time for her. I'm having some health problems but I have to keep fighting for my mom, my avian/rabbit family & my own life. Thank you (hoot), my VacaFamily! Please keep us in prayer for this to be over soon & a big victory for mom & me.

Hugs,
GentleDoe

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. I hope everybody is enjoying this glorious Sunday. The breeze flowing into the Dude's office is a welcome relief; it has been a little stuffy in here all closed up last winter. In fact, it still smells a bit like ABS plastic!

And speaking of which, I'm glad to see that we are going to be getting the new loaner printer this week. I am ready for my close-up! (I am going to be scanned.) I also have lots of fun projects that I have been waiting to print out. It is going to be vun!

Did you guys see what happened last week when the Russians tried to send a Progress resupply ship to the Space Station? Big mess. It got a case of the spins, and broke apart. I guess sometime in early May it is supposed to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. I'm hoping that the water will land in California--we need it! And on a personal note, I am hoping for a downpour of peanut M&Ms. I love peanut M&Ms. So please--just water and peanut M&Ms for California, and the rest of it can go land in the desert somewhere.

Well, time to get bizzy! See you all next week and we'll do the StoryTime!!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Ranch Pork Chop and Potato Casserole with Cheddar Gravy

  Ingredients

4-6 pork chops (bone-in or boneless, they both work)
8 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about ¼" thick)
Ranch dressing (no measurements, use it based on your preference)
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 can Cheddar cheese soup
1¼ cups milk (or one can evaporated milk)
½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Seasoned Italian bread crumbs
2-3 tablespoons of butter, broken into small pieces - plus more to sear chops in
Salt
Pepper
Garlic powder
Chopped green onions (optional—for garnish)

  Directions
  Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Melt a couple tablespoon of butter in a hot skillet. Season the pork chops with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Sear the chops on each side for a couple of minutes until lightly browned. Remove the pork chops from the pan and set aside to cool slightly. Once cool enough to touch, brush each side with ranch dressing and coat both sides in seasoned bread crumbs.

Pour the can of cheddar cheese soup and the milk into the pan you used to sear the chops. Whisk it together, and scrape the browned bits off of the bottom. Bring to a boil on medium heat, whisking occasionally. Add Cheddar cheese and stir until melted.

Place half of the potato slices into the bottom of a 9x13 casserole dish that you've sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder and drizzle some ranch dressing over top (between ¼ cup and ½ cup). Layer half the onions on top of the potatoes. Layer the other half of sliced potatoes on top and repeat the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and ranch dressing. Lay the remaining sliced onion over the ranched up potatoes. Season with a little more salt and pepper.

Pour half of the cheddar gravy over the potatoes and onions. Top with the coated pork chops. Pour the other half of the cheddar gravy over top of the pork chops. Cover with aluminum foil.

Bake, covered, at 350°F for 1 hour. Remove the foil, and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes.

Slow-Cooker Hula Chicken

  Ingredients:

1 cup pineapple juice
⅓ cup soy sauce
½ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
⅓ cup packed brown sugar
2 cloves fresh garlic, finely chopped or grated
1 tablespoon grated gingerroot
1-2 tablespoons Sriracha sauce
2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts
1 can (16 oz) crushed or diced pineapple, drained, juice reserved

  Ingredients:
In 5- to 6-quart slow cooker, mix pineapple juice, soy sauce, ketchup, rice vinegar, brown sugar, garlic, gingerroot and Sriracha sauce.

Add chicken and crushed pineapple.

Cover and cook on Low heat setting 6 to 8 hours or High heat setting 4 to 6 hours.

Once chicken is cooked through and sauce thickened, remove chicken; shred with 2 forks. Return chicken to sauce, and turn heat to High. Cook, uncovered, 25 to 30 minutes or until sauce is thickened. If sauce gets too thick, add the reserved pineapple juice from the can.

Serve warm over a bed of rice with a side of pineapple salsa, if desired, and chopped fresh cilantro.

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

One of the Dude's bee photos

"I've been trying for three days, and that was from this morning.

I learned a bit about bees in the process--they don't like to hover in the sun

(probably overheat), but they will do it more in the early morning.

So I went out this morning so when the sun was shining, but the air was still cool.

Then they were a bit more likely to hover over the flowers."

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"It is spring migration time here in our backyard. We’ve had some awesome birds passing through over

the last few weeks, but for this week I’m sharing: The intruder!

And a picture to go along with it.

Both of these showed up in our yard at about the same time, go figure…!"

First: A Catbird

And the INTRUDER! A Birdcat.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

What happened when the couple attempted to kiss in the dense fog?
They mist.

What invention makes it possible to walk through walls?
Doors

A man who worked on the dock of a certain Georgia river had to be sure that only 50 pounds of goose feathers were in each bag to be shipped. When they asked him what he did for a living, he replied, "I weigh down upon the Swanee river!"

The fourth grade teacher took her class on a field trip to the zoo. When they returned to the classroom she asked each of them to write an essay describing everything they experienced. They were use descriptions detailing all the senses—sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.  After a few minutes, one of the students said, "Ms. Jones, I don't know how to spell this word." The teacher asked, "Did you try to find it in the dictionary." The student replied, "Yes, but I couldn't find it." The teacher had him whisper the word to her and then said, "Well, that one can be a little tricky. Try this spelling and look it up." The boy looked up the word and said, "Ms. Jones, this isn't the right word." She looked puzzled. "It's not? You did say, 'womb", right? Like where a baby grows?" He said, "NO! I said, 'WOOM!' Like when an elephant farts!"

How was a baseball game played in the Bible?
In the big inning, Eve stole first, Adam stole second, Rebecca walked with the pitcher, Gideon rattled the pitchers, Saul was put out by David, Absalom and Judas went out swinging, and the prodigal son stole home.

Zorro's Word
of the Week

DIAPAUSE

Pronunciation:  \DYE-uh-pawz\

noun

Definition of DIAPAUSE

a period of physiologically enforced dormancy between periods of activity

EXAMPLES

Although insects most often enter diapause when they are pupae,

diapause can occur during any life stage.

"Last week I discovered dozens of Monarch butterfly eggs at the ranch when a cold front pushed

… migrants down to the Texas funnel. The early moving butterflies

broke their reproductive diapause to lay hundreds of eggs."

 — Monica Maeckle, MySanAntonio.com, September 25, 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

Diapause, from the Greek word diapausis, meaning "pause," may have been coined by the entomologist

William Wheeler in 1893. Wheeler's focus was insects, but diapause, a spontaneous period of suspended

animation that seems to happen in response to adverse environmental conditions, also occurs in the development

of crustaceans, snails, and other animals. Exercising poetic license, novelist Joyce Carol Oates even gave the word

a human application in her short story "Visitation Rights" (1988): "Her life, seemingly in shambles, ... was not ruined; ...

injured perhaps, and surely stunted, but only temporarily. There had been a diapause, and that was all...."

Test Your Vocabulary: Fill in the blanks to create a verb meaning "to pass the summer in a state of torpor":

 _ s _ iv _ te.

The answer is …
