The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat.
If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out
link. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Prayer Requests |
Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
A very happy Sunday
to everyone! I hope you are having nice weather where you are.
The trees have been blossoming here, so I've just been in the
backyard with the camera. Wanted to get some shots of the white
roses, but also a tree we have has been attracting a lot of
bees. So I have been photographing bees. It is amazingly
difficult to capture those suckers in flight! I managed to get a
few shots I like. I've been using the telephoto lens, because
I'm not 100% crazy about having to stand so close to a bunch of
bees buzzing around. They didn't seem to mind having their
picture taken, since I never got stung.
I'm also trying to make some headway on the vapor chamber this weekend. Speaking of which, I saw some people had some questions about that in the chat last week, and I didn't get a chance to answer because I was dashing off to watch my show ("Madame Secretary," which was very good, even though the script was very derivative of "Hunt For Red October"). The question was, how are you joining the glass to the wood? Yes, the chamber presents some unusual challenges to me when it comes to design and construction. Because the inside of it is circulating fumes of acetone, I have to be mindful of how I put it together. I'm having to use more screws and less wood glue. Acetone will dissolve wood glue, silicone caulk, Sugru, and just about any plastic ever made. So I am having to keep everything limited to wood, screws, and glass. I'm using a bit of wood glue in addition to the screws--just to seal the gaps in the wood. I don't care if that softens, because the screws will be what is really holding it together. The panes of glass will sit in the wooden frames I have built for them. If there is too much vapor escaping around the glass, I will add some cotton batting around the edges of the glass to keep it air-tight. Then there is the question of the fan and motor. The motor will be sitting outside the chamber, and will turn the fan on the inside by means of magnetic gears. The reason for this is that electric motors sometimes can produce small sparks, and that may be enough to ignite the vapors. Besides, the wire windings in the coils of the motor are typically coated in a varathane, so if the motor were inside the chamber the windings would probably melt, short out--and so a spark would be guaranteed. Once I get the motor working and the whole thing together, it is my intention to first try putting some smouldering paper inside so that it fills with smoke. That will let me see the airflow, and I'll also be able to sniff around it to see how badly it leaks air from the inside, and where. I can test and modify in this manner well before I introduce any flammable gases into it. So it's a fun little project, albeit a bit of a challenge! Now I don't know if you guys have heard this news, but it is some pretty exciting stuff. In case you hadn't heard, Cheryl Ronning (aka CAR) has been putting together this big MOD get-together in Minneapolis, Minnesota for September 18-20 of this year, in celebration of five years since Molly came into our lives. Well, it has just been confirmed that Carlos and Donna are going to be the guests of honor at the event! I just exchanged e-mails with Carlos yesterday, and he told me I should get cracking on the bobbleheads and figurines, so it looks like I'll be squeezing in some sculpting in the next few days as well! CAR had asked me if I could make it to the event, but I still can't really commit yet, one way or the other. Time, money, and such--all must be factored in. I certainly would love to go, because I could also squeeze in some genealogy, given that my Dad's side of the family came from the Twin Cities. We'll just have to see how this summer plays out. And speaking of which, it is time for me to get busy with today's to-do list. Have a great week, and we'll talk with you soon! Cheers, VacaDude p.s. The Family and Many Friends of Cpeke |
It is with sadness that we must tell you of the death of Christine Hall,

ChocoMare |
Ruthrings sent us this news on March 28: "I
don't know which of you have Susan [ChocoMare]on Facebook, but you may
know her husband was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia several months
ago. I would guess he's only in his 50s. She went home from work
Thursday and he was coughing terribly and so confused he could hardly
open the door. They finally went to the ER and it's downhill from there.
. low sodium, dehydration, then seizures, then ICU, and now comfort
treatment only and Hospice!!! I feel so bad for her!!! Please pray for a
peaceful conclusion for both David and Susan." And then we received this news on March 29: "David died overnight, but this is what Susan posted on Facebook a few minutes earlier. Wow! I don't know why God hasn't released his body yet....but perhaps there is just one here in this ICU who needs to see that we, who are in the Lord, do not grieve as those who have no hope. We grieve with THE Hope, The Blessed Assurance that one day, when our tent is folded, we will see Him face to face. And just maybe they'll ask, "How...tell me how you have joy despite the tears?" And I can smile thru those years and say "May I introduce you to my Lord?" |
||
KSBorn | KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.
VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin | UPDATE: WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!! "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."
TheDaddyBird, | TDB is coming home on Wednesday, almost
exactly one month from his initial hip replacement surgery. He is doing
great! All the doctors and nurses are thrilled and amazed at his
progress. (One doc said TDB will be their new poster boy.) He's riding
12 miles on a stationary bike and doing 20 reps in leg lifts with 20
pound ankle weights. They've weaned him off his oxygen except with
extreme exertion or when he's sleeping. He's also already been cleared
for driving again. CC (and I) can't wait to have him home. CC has been a real trouper and a big help through all of this. I am VERY proud of her. |
||
Marilyn Crabb | UPDATE:
Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast
tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will
be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer
is removed! My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream. (Marilyn from Los Angeles) |
||
Littleguys | UPDATE:
The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years. Pinched
nerve. Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we
find out why. Not the joints. X-ray, then MRI showed that
the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the
other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in
the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column
and go down the leg. Taking care of it all got delayed.
The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if
it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can
kill and pinched nerves won't. Caused weight gain, since I
can't walk as much as I used to...LOL
Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back. Three options. First one, surgery, no one wants. Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone. Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming. I really
need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this
weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Elsalynda | Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.
GentleDoe | Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance &
a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My
mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her
taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now
owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's
home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to
put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my
father & my parent's house. I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation. Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again. |

A Message from Zorro |
Hello there, Everbuddy!
Zorro the Mouse here. Isn't that exciting news about
Carlos and Donna coming to the MOD meet-up? That sounds
like a really nice shin-dig. I am trying to convince the
Dude to go, because I think it would be a lot of vun
(despite the fact that there is supposed to be a live
barn owl there. I sure hope someone clues him in on the
whole code of not eating the friendly critters such as
myself!). But also, I'm hoping we can go because they
are holding it in a town that is really close to the
state of Wisconsin, and you know what that means. That's
right--CHEESE!!!! Oh, the drool just runs off my
whiskers thinking about all those yummy cheeses that we
could go taste. Mmmmmm. Nom nom nom...
I've been helping the Dude with his vapor chamber, so I'm hoping if I pitch in enough, he will reward me with a trip to Wisconsin. Actually, I'm thinking the Dude should make another chamber, because this current chamber is looking an awful lot like a great little apartment for a mouse! Some little cubby-holes, a lot of big windows...it would be great for Zorrina and me! I don't know if the Dude would go for that, though. Any-hoo, time to go get bizzy! |

From the Dude
One of the Dude's bee photos
"I've been trying for three days, and that was from this morning.
I learned a bit about bees in the process--they don't like to hover in the sun
(probably overheat), but they will do it more in the early morning.
So I went out this morning so when the sun was shining, but the air was still cool.
Then they were a bit more likely to hover over the flowers."
Sharoot's Caboose
Sharoot shares,
"Migration time is here. These two birds spend only a few days with us as they stop by to
check out the fare at the Coughlin Birdie Bistro Cafe. The first is a Rose Breasted Grosbeak
of which we have at least three, and the second picture features a Painted Bunting.
We saw both of these birds today. Yay!"
Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple
groaner" riddles and jokes. Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy! |

I just read a book about Stockholm Syndrome. It was pretty bad at
first, but by the end I kind of liked it.

||
Nurse: “Doctor, there’s an invisible man in the waiting room.”
Doctor: “Tell him I can’t see him.” |
||
Have you heard about the corduroy pillow? I hear it’s making headlines.
Kyle has some questions… Why is it called "after dark" when it is really "after light"? Why do they call it a "near miss" when it's clearly a "near collission?" Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites? Why do "overlook" and "oversee" mean opposite things? Why does "slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing? Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing? Why do we put suits in garment bags and garments in a suitcase? Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? If a vegetarian is one who eats nothing but vegetables, what does that make a humanitarian? |

What happened to the kid who ran away with the circus?
The police made him bring it back. |

Zorro's Word of the Week |
WEAL
Pronunciation: \WEEL\
noun
Definition of WEAL
a sound, healthy, or prosperous state : well-being
EXAMPLES
The president spoke of devotion to the common weal and the
hope of creating a better country.
"'Higher healthcare costs'? No one could be for that, so the
campaign [against it] looks like a flag-carrier for the public weal."
— Michael Hiltzik, Los Angeles Times, October 10, 2014
DID YOU KNOW?
Weal is most often used in contexts referring to the general good.
One reads, for example, of the "public weal" or the "common weal."
The latter of these led to the formation of the noun commonweal, a word that once referred
to an organized political entity, such as a nation or state, but today usually means "the general welfare."
The word commonwealth shares these meanings, but its situation is reversed;
the "political entity" sense of commonwealth is still current, whereas the "general welfare"
sense has become archaic. At one time, weal and wealth were also synonyms; both meant "riches"
("all his worldly weal") and "well-being." Both words stem from wela, the
Old English word for "well-being," and are closely related to the Old English word for "well."
