Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
I can't remember if last week I was still sick or not--these last few weeks have been a mess because of this bronchial thing I had. But for the most part I am back to normal, with just a bit of persistent cough. Mostly have my strength back.

What I don't have anymore is a 3D printer. I had to ship the da Vinci back this week, so now I have printing withdrawals! However--not to fear. In about a week I should be getting a new one for another loaner period, because I was a runner-up in the latest XYZprinting contest! So this time I will be getting the bigger brother to the da Vinci--this one has a 3D scanner built into it. This is a set of lasers that let you put an object in the thing, and it will scan it and create a digital 3D file of its shape. Frankly, I'm not sure how useful this will be for me, but I look forward to testing it out to see what it can (or can't) do.

So today I am doing a little woodworking on the acetone vapor chamber. At some point today I may get to the point where I need to cut the glass for the unit's windows. This is a bit exciting for me, because it will mark the first time in my life I have ever cut glass. I watched my Dad do it dozens of times, but for some reason I have always been intimidated by the process. But hopefully--today--I'm going to break through that barrier! (Maybe using the term "break" is tempting fate a bit...I should rephrase that.)

Next week is Easter, so we will not be having a VacaChat on that day, but we will have the next one on April 12th. That is, unless I am in prison. If that is the case, then I am not sure they are going to allow me to broadcast. (Sorry, I have an IRS deadline coming up tomorrow that I am a tad freaked out about.)

Well, I've got about a zillion things to try to get done today, so I'd better get back to it.

Have a great week!
  Cheers, VacaDude

ChocoMare Ruthrings sent us this news yesterday:  "I don't know which of you have Susan [ChocoMare]on Facebook, but you may know her husband was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia several months ago. I would guess he's only in his 50s. She went home from work Thursday and he was coughing terribly and so confused he could hardly open the door. They finally went to the ER and it's downhill from there. . low sodium, dehydration, then seizures, then ICU, and now comfort treatment only and Hospice!!! I feel so bad for her!!! Please pray for a peaceful conclusion for both David and Susan."

And then we received this news today:  "David died overnight, but this is what Susan posted on Facebook a few minutes earlier. Wow!

I don't know why God hasn't released his body yet....but perhaps there is just one here in this ICU who needs to see that we, who are in the Lord, do not grieve as those who have no hope. We grieve with THE Hope, The Blessed Assurance that one day, when our tent is folded, we will see Him face to face. And just maybe they'll ask, "How...tell me how you have joy despite the tears?" And I can smile thru those years and say "May I introduce you to my Lord?"

VacaDude and is family Condolences go out to VacaDude and his family on the death of his brother-in-law, Duke after a long struggle following a stroke. Keep them all in your prayers as they continue to deal with the details of Duke's life and death.

KSBorn KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.

VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin UPDATE:  WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!  "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."

TheDaddyBird, Well, I'm sure most of you have been following TheDaddyBird's saga via the emailed updates. For those who haven't, here it is in a nutshell. He went in for the routine hip replacement, which went remarkably well. He had a massive heart attack in recovery and the next morning had a triple bypass. His recovery has gone amazingly well. Everyone at the hospital has been thrilled with his progress.
It was planned that he would move to rehab yesterday but they still need a sign-off from the orthopedist. He was not in the hospital yesterday or today so the discharge has been delayed until Monday. It has nothing to do with Pat's condition. He's doing great. It's just a matter of paperwork and coordination between all the various departments.

He's up and walking with no problems (unless he overdoes it) and can get in and out of the bed by himself. He's gotten a great night's sleep the last two nights so he was much more chipper today. He's coughing easier today, as well.
The doctors are all thrilled (and amazed) with his progress. He's again proven to be a walking miracle.

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years.  Pinched nerve.  Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we find out why.  Not the joints.  X-ray, then MRI showed that the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column and go down the leg.  Taking care of it all got delayed.  The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can kill and pinched nerves won't.  Caused weight gain, since I can't walk as much as I used to...LOL

Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back.  Three options.  First one, surgery, no one wants.  Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone.  Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming.  I really need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Caboval Joey has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Please keep Caboval in your prayers.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance & a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my father & my parent's house.

I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation.

Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again.

Shari in Memphis Has anyone gotten any updates from Shari?

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the mouse here. We are taking it easy here in Vacaville today. It has been quite warm, so we appear to have skipped over Spring and we're moving straight into Summer. (It is supposed to get into the mid 80s today. That makes it pretty toasty out in the garage!)

The 3D printer is gone, and the Dude did not make a single thing for me to wear! I was kinda hoping for a football helmet. Well, he has promised that there will be some things for yours truly in the next loaner period. Boy, there had better be! I want my plastic cheese serving tray, and sunglasses, and some swords and helmets and stuff. Gee, I sure hope the Dude gets some extra filament this time--he's going to need it! He said he might even try to scan me, if that works. That means I would sit in the machine and the lasers would come on and make a 3D model of me! That way, the Dude could make a helmet and stuff to go on my head, and he would be sure that it would fit. It sounds a little skeery--I hope it doesn't hurt!

There was also a plan to make something for Patrick so that his mouth could move better. You see, the only puffin that Folkmanis made was one for children, so the Dude has a hard time getting his hand up in there. Of course, I don't understand any of that--Patrick is a puffin! He is perfectly capable of talking on his own, just like I am! But anyway, a little plastic contraption might make it easier for him to speak. (I think he speaks a bit too much as it is, but nobody asked me...)

Well, off to do all the Sunday things. Cheerio to you all!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna

  Ingredients

1 (8 ounce) package lasagna noodles (about 9 noodles)
½ cup butter (1 stick)
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
2 cups shredded Swiss cheese, divided
1¾ cups warm milk
2½ cups rotisserie chicken, diced
8 ounces deli ham, chopped
½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
½ cup bread crumbs
1 pinch Italian seasoning, or to taste

  Directions

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in the boiling water until cooked through but firm to the bite, about 8 minutes. Drain.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and stir in cream cheese into hot butter until it begins to melt, about 5 minutes. It might look strange here! Don't worry. This is normal. Season with salt, onion powder, and black pepper. Whisk warm milk gradually into cream cheese until smooth; make sure to do it slowly. Stir in 1½ cups of Swiss cheese.

Bring the sauce to a simmer, whisking continually until cheese has melted and sauce has thickened, about 5 to 10 minutes. Remove mixture from heat.

Spread a thin layer of cheese sauce onto the bottom of a 9x9-inch baking dish.

Arrange ⅓ of the lasagna noodles over the sauce (3 noodles for me). You can tear them to fit as needed. Spread half the cooked chicken and half the ham over the noodles. Pour 1 cup sauce over chicken and ham. Repeat layers starting with half the remaining lasagna noodles, remaining chicken, remaining ham, and 1 more cup of cheese sauce. Finish by layering remaining lasagna noodles, remaining sauce, remaining ½ cup Swiss cheese, and bread crumbs; sprinkle top with Italian seasoning. Cover dish tightly with aluminum foil.

Bake in the preheated oven until casserole is bubbling, about 25 minutes. Remove foil and continue to bake until crumbs are browned, about 10 more minutes. Let casserole stand 10 minutes before serving.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Cake

  Ingredients:

Cake:
   ½ cup salted butter, softened
   ½ cup peanut butter
   1 cup light brown sugar
   ¼ cup granulated sugar
   3 eggs
   2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
   2 cups all-purpose flour
   1 teaspoon baking powder
   1 cup whole milk
Frosting:
2 sticks salted butter, slightly softened
½ teaspoon unsweetened grape Kool-Aid mix
   3 tablespoons grape jelly
   3⅓ cups powdered sugar
   3 teaspoons warm water
Additional peanut butter and jelly for garnish, if desired
   Purple food coloring

  Ingredients:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour 3 (8 inch) round cake pans and set aside. Alternately, you can make 2 thicker cakes.

In a medium bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Set aside.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat butter, peanut butter and both sugars on medium speed for 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, then add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each. Beat in vanilla extract.
With the mixer on medium low, beat in flour and milk alternately, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and give the batter a good stir from the bottom with a rubber spatula.

Spread batter evenly in prepared pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until top springs back when lightly touched in the center. Remove from oven and let cool in the pans for 5 minutes before removing to wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare frosting:
In the bowl you your mixer, beat butter, Kool-Aid mix, and grape jelly until smooth. With the mixer on low, slowly add powdered sugar, a little bit at a time, until just mixed in. Add warm water food coloring and slowly increase mixer speed to high. Beat for one minute, until smooth and fluffy.

Stack and frost cake. If desired, chill after frosting, until firm, then top with peanut butter and jelly for garnish.

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

I thought you might enjoy this photo of the conjunction from the other night.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"This week we went to Brick Pond Park again because it seems to

have all the cool things that our yard doesn't.  Here's a photo of the park."

"This second picture features "Ole Rusty" the patriarch of the park, about 12 - 14 feet long.

He generally gives most everyone the stink eye… (I'm glad our yard doesn't have any of these!)"

This third picture is of Mama Red Shouldered Hawk sitting on her eggs.

Sometimes Daddy is nearby but we didn't see him today.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

Did you hear about the psychic midget that robbed a bank?
Now there’s a small medium at large.

My wife told me to stop impersonating a flamingo. I had to put my foot down.

Two atoms are walking down the street, one says to the other:
“I think I just lost an electron.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive.”

Two young men came upon a great trout brook. They stayed all day enjoying the fishing. At the end of the day, knowing that they would be graduating from college soon, they vowed they would return in 20 years. Twenty years later, they walked into the woods and before long came upon a brook. One of the men said to the other, “This is the place!” The other disagreed, but the first man said, ‘I recognize the clover growing on the other side.” To which the other replied, “Silly, you can't tell a brook by its clover.”

Because pepper makes them sneeze!

Zorro's Word
of the Week

PALINODE

Pronunciation:  \PAL-uh-nohd\

noun

Definition of PALINODE

1: an ode or song recanting or retracting something in an earlier poem
2: a formal retraction

EXAMPLES

Oscar Wilde wrote this famous palinode in an introduction to an essay:

"Not that I agree with everything that I have said in this essay.

There is much with which I entirely disagree."

"My Life Among the Deathworks is a monumental palinode, designed to unwrite

the book that made [Philip] Rieff's name."

— Adam Kirsch, New York Sun, March 7, 2007

DID YOU KNOW?

Does singing someone's praises in a palinode pay off? It did in the case of Stesichorus,

a Greek poet of the 6th century B.C. According to Plato, old Stesichorus was struck

blind after writing a poem insulting Helen of Troy, but his sight was restored after

he wrote an apologetic palinode. That poet was only too glad to apply the Greek word

palinoidia (a compound of palin, meaning "back" or "again," and aeidein, meaning

"to sing"). So were 16th-century English poets, who borrowed and modified

the Greek term to refer to odes of their own.
