Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
I hope you are all enjoying your weekend. It has been mild in temperatures here, with a bit of overcast. It's better than the mid 80s we were getting last week. I'm just not ready to wear shorts around St. Patrick's Day--but had to do it.

Speaking of St. Patty's--I hope you all had a fun one! I usually make corned beef and cabbage on that day, but given that I was so sick at the time, I had to postpone. So today I am making it, with lots of hand-washing going on.

Yes, I am still on the mend from this chest cold or flu, or whatever it was. About midweek I finally had to break down and go to the doctor for it. I was fighting a losing battle of fluids accumulating in my lungs, and as a result of it I couldn't sleep through the night. So it just kept getting worse. I went, and they diagnosed me with an acute bronchitis, and wrote me a prescription for antibiotics and cough syrup with codeine. That seems to have done the trick. Today is my last day of the Zithro pack, and I am mostly back to normal. But it sure was nasty for a while. I felt I was going to cough myself inside-out there for a while.

Now to give an update on the whole 3D printing and second XYZprinting contest situation. Technically, my loaner period for this printer ended on March 16. I had looked into the possibility of buying this loaner unit, and they were checking on that. Then came this second contest, and I thought I had a good idea of how to win the contest, so I just had them hold off until the outcome of the contest was known. There had also been talk of them sending a film crew here to shoot promotional footage of me "at work" with their printer. So I am holding onto the printer until they either arrange that, or they ask for it back. I can always claim "well, I wasn't going to send it back if there was still this filming yet to be done." So it is sitting here printing as I write this. I have been doing a ridiculous amount of printing in the last week or so. It's a great way to pass the time while waiting for health to return to your body.

As for the contest, well--that could have gone better. Once again, the rules they posted in the beginning were poorly written and ambiguous. I made an interpretation based on what was said, and it turned out that they had something different in mind. So they have awarded the printer to someone who used the shotgun approach (he entered 18 models, mostly of small objects that can be downloaded from other sites). Also, they only announced the main winner--the person who gets a printer for keeps. They had also said they were going to award two runner-ups with a month loan (so I was hoping to get a new month with a different printer), and they haven't announced the runners-up yet. So I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.

That's two contests I have entered with this company, and both times I have barely lost because they didn't explain the rules adequately. That's frustrating.

Oh well--on to Space news. There was a great solar eclipse up north, though one of the two main ground-based viewing sites got completely clouded over. I'm still holding out for the big even in 2017--path of totality sweeping right across the US midwest!

And a happy birthday to Max! It was five years ago yesterday that Max hatched--starting us all down the path on this wonderful adventure.

Well, today is another day of 3D printing and woodworking. I'm building an acetone vapor chamber to help in the production of 3D models. To make it, I'm having to experiment with magnetic gears. Fun stuff! It is an interesting experiment for me to work with wood and plastic at the same time. One being subtractive and one being additive--I am pleased to see that my mind can easily jump from one paradigm to the other with no problem!

I hope everyone has a great week!
  Cheers, VacaDude

VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin UPDATE:  WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!  "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."

TheDaddyBird, TheDaddyBird's hip replacement surgery is tomorrow morning. It will be such a relief to get it done and over with. His stay in the hospital is expected to be only about 2½ days.

Littleguys  UPDATE:  The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years.  Pinched nerve.  Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we find out why.  Not the joints.  X-ray, then MRI showed that the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column and go down the leg.  Taking care of it all got delayed.  The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can kill and pinched nerves won't.  Caused weight gain, since I can't walk as much as I used to...LOL

Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back.  Three options.  First one, surgery, no one wants.  Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone.  Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming.  I really need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Caboval Joey has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Please keep Caboval in your prayers.

Elsalynda Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.

GentleDoe Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance & a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my father & my parent's house.

I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation.

Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. Things are slowly getting back to normal at the Casa de Vaca. When the Dude got into his coughing attacks, it sometimes sounded like a giant dragon roaring. It got pretty noisy at times! But things are much better now.

Today the house is starting to smell yummy because of the corned beef and cabbage cooking. Though this postponing the holiday has left me a bit confoozed as to when to celebrate. So just to be safe, I snitched some of the raw cabbage and made myself a little wreath of it to wear around my ears. I don't want to be pinched for not wearing green, if it is today...

Then there was Pi day last weekend. We had a yummy apple pie and vanilla ice cream to celebrate. I always love the holidays that involve cooking something special! But that's me--always thinking with my stomach. I think the Dude mostly liked having the ice cream in the house, because it felt really good on his throat during the bad coughing spells. Of course, we have Easter coming up soon, which usually around here means roast beef and Yorkshire pudding!

This, of course, is one of the main reasons I decided to move up north all those years ago. I love hanging out with two-leggers that like to cook!

Well, it is time to go help the Dude with his woodworking. He has me mostly doing the measurements, and then I call them out to him. Unfortunately, I have never had the heart to tell him that I am just a touch dyslexic. He just keeps blaming the saws--saying they are not cutting accurately for some reason. Maybe some day I'll tell him the truth... :)

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Today, I give you our version of two popular "Funeral" recipes. These are often served

at funeral receptions or taken to the home of a grieving family.

Funeral Sandwiches

I give you the basic funeral sandwich and some of the variations we've come up with.

  Ingredients

1 package (12 count) of King’s Hawaiian Rolls
½-1 pound ham deli meat*
Swiss cheese, thinly sliced*
½ cup butter, melted
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce*
2 tablespoons mustard**
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Dash of onion powder*

  Directions

Cut each roll in half and place bottom halves on the bottom of a baking pan.

Layer bottom half with cheese, then ham slices, and then more cheese and place the top half back on.

In a bowl, mix together the butter, Worcestershire, mustard, brown sugar and onion powder. Pour sauce over sandwiches, drenching each one. Cover tightly and marinade anywhere from 4-24 hours. Overnight works best!

Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake for 15 minutes uncovered, or until cheese is melted and bun tops are a bit golden.

*Here are some of our favorite variations:

Add a slice of pineapple or some well drained crushed pineapple under the first slice of cheese. (Putting it UNDER the cheese helps anchor it to the bun so things don't all slide off. When we use pineapple, we usually substitute soy sauce for the Worcestershire sauce.

Use sliced roast beef and Cheddar or pepper jack cheese. Add some sliced pepperoncini or banana peppers.

Use sliced pastrami or corned beef and add some rinsed and well-drained sauerkraut.

Use sliced pepperoni and Mozzarella cheese. Add some sliced black olives and some thinly sliced fresh tomato.

Use sliced pork and substitute some slightly thinned BBQ sauce for the Worcestershire Sauce.

Add thinly sliced sweet onions to any version.

**We do not use the school-bus-yellow mustard. We usually use a combination of Grey Poupon or Dill Mustard (that we got from Wisconsin) and Kraft Ranch Dijon.

Basically, any combination of meat, cheese, add-ins and sauce works. Get creative and make these the way YOU like them.

Funeral Potatoes

  Ingredients:

6 tablespoons butter
¾ cup onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
One 30-ounce bag of frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed (or 12 small potatoes parboiled and shredded or cubed)*
One can (10.5-ounce) condensed cream of chicken soup
1 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded and firmly packed
1½ cups crushed cornflake cereal or Panko bread crumbs

  Ingredients:
  Preheat oven to 350°F.

In a medium skillet, sauté onions in 2 tablespoons butter until onions are soft and translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a large bowl, mix together the cooked onions and garlic, hash browns, condensed soup, sour cream or Greek yogurt, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and 1½ cups Cheddar cheese.

Spread the potato mixture into a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.

Top the casserole with the remaining ½ cup cheese.

Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter and toss with cornflakes. Sprinkle cornflakes mixture evenly over the top of the casserole.

Bake for 50-60 minutes or until heated through and bubbly.

*The frozen cubed hash browns are also a great time saver when you need potato salad in a hurry.

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

I thought you might enjoy this photo of the conjunction from the other night.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"This week we went to Brick Pond Park again because it seems to

have all the cool things that our yard doesn't.  Here's a photo of the park."

"This second picture features "Ole Rusty" the patriarch of the park, about 12 - 14 feet long.

He generally gives most everyone the stink eye… (I'm glad our yard doesn't have any of these!)"

This third picture is of Mama Red Shouldered Hawk sitting on her eggs.

Sometimes Daddy is nearby but we didn't see him today.

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

What's the difference between a nine-month pregnant woman and a model?
Nothing, if the pregnant woman's husband knows what's good for him.

What do you call two thousand songbirds?
Two Kilo Mockingbirds

What does a blonde owl say?
What, what?

A young schoolboy was having a hard time pronouncing the letter ''R,'' and all the other kids were, of course, teasing him about it. To help him out, the teacher gave him a sentence to practice at home: ''Robert gave Richard a rap in the ribs for roasting the rabbit so rare.'' In class a few days later, the teacher asked the boy to recite the sentence out loud. The boy nervously eyed his classmates, many of them already laughing at him, then replied, ''Bob gave Dick a poke in the side because the bunny wasn't cooked enough.''

What should you give a dog with a fever?
Mustard. It’s the best thing for a hot dog.

Zorro's Word
of the Week

SYNCRETIC

Pronunciation:  \sin-KRET-ik\

adjective

Definition of SYNCRETIC

characterized or brought about by a combination of different forms of belief or practice

EXAMPLES

Dr. Portman practices a syncretic form of medicine, borrowing from both

Eastern and Western medical traditions.

"Her CV cites disparate accomplishments as a scientist, writer, and artist—and teacher….

Moreover, her career arc represents a syncretic impulse that characterizes her

 general outlook on life."

— Glen Martin, Forbes, November 4, 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

Syncretic has its roots in an ancient alliance. It's a descendant of the Greek word synkrētismos,

meaning "federation of Cretan cities"—syn- means "together, with," and Krēt- means

"Cretan." The adjective first appeared in English in the mid-19th century, and the related noun

syncretism debuted over 200 years earlier. Syncretic retains the idea of coalition and appears in

such contexts as "syncretic religions," "syncretic societies," and even "syncretic music," all describing

things influenced by two or more styles or traditions. The word also has a specific application in

linguistics, where it refers to a fusion of inflectional forms.
