The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat.
If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out
link. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Hello Vriends, | ||
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend, and that you have been
able to dig out of the snow--all of you who are dealing with
snow. No snow here. No water, either.
It has been a busy week, with one thing or another. Yesterday was the Lightwriters Photography Group photo contest, and I had to put eight works together in mattes so that I could submit them on turn-in day, which was Thursday--which happened to be Mary's birthday, as well. So I had a lot of things I was trying to get taken care of in the week. Then on Friday, I needed to perform a banking transaction that required my driving 85 miles, so that was an adventure. Firstly, the photo contest was fun, and I managed to win 3rd place in the black&white landscape division! I figure for my first ever photography contest, it is a good start and something to build on for the future. I am considering entering a few more pieces in the Dixon May fair, which takes place not far from here. (The photo I won with is one I believe I have shown in chat--it is of a livestock corral in the fog). As for Mary's birthday, I managed to find some DVDs she has been wanting, including Grand Budapest Hotel, so we shall get to see that one soon. It did fairly well at the Oscars, so I am curious to see what the fuss was about. For Mary's night out, I took her to see "The Kingsmen." A light-hearted little film, so it was just what we were in the mood for. It was fun to go out for a movie again! Seeing as we only managed to get out to two films all of last year, I would say we are off to a better start in 2015. My banking trip was interesting. I needed to cash out of one of my old IRAs from back in my software engineering days--to help get on top of some bills. This required my signing paperwork and all, so I decided to go to the branch. Back when I got out of school and moved to the Silicon Valley, I got an account at Valley Credit Union, because the company I worked for (Singer-Link Flight Simulation) had a direct-deposit arrangement there. Well, Link went away, and then I moved away from the San Jose area, I just never bothered to close the account. This was partially because I had a small IRA there, and I just left it alone. Well, trying to bank remotely from that distance has made for some real inconveniences over the years. So that's why I decided to go ahead and close the account. It made me a little sad to do so--I was always very fond of my years working in the tech industry, and this was one of my very last ties to the area. (Valley Credit Union got bought in 2006 by a credit union based in Illinois, called CEFCU) Well, the drive down was more fun for me than I thought it was going to be. For one thing, it gave me time away from the computer and work projects, so that I could do some deep thinking and planning. What's more, it gave me an excuse to go down to Sunnyvale, a place I hadn't been to in probably at least a decade. My, how that place has changed! Some places I used to frequent are no longer there, but some places are. Sunnyvale was where Link was, and that's the town I moved to when I first got out of college. In fact, I went by my old house and took some photos of it. Still there, even after almost 30 years! I drove around the town and looked for some of my old hangouts, and it was fun taking a look back. Literally every time I drove around a corner, I found another spot that had been significant to me in some way. I even went to my old work building, which is now a Fry's Electronics store. Given that Radio Shack has gone away, Fry's is now my best bet for walk-in stores that sell electronic components. I bought some power connectors for a lighting/video project I have been working on. That video project is the time-lapse shots I have been wanting to make of the 3D Printing. I did some test runs yesterday, and everything looks good. Today I am going for the main event--to shoot a time-lapse video of the printing of my Nimoy/Spock tribute statue. It is very tall, so the printing session should photograph well. Speaking of the printing, I enjoyed getting a chance to chat a bit about that last weekend, but I could tell from the chat screen that there were a lot of questions raised that I didn't get a chance to address. So I am hoping to get a chance to sit down in front of the camera and do that. Perhaps this week. Now, regarding this newest contest that XYZprinting is hosting. I have devised a strategy that I think shall give me at least a fighting chance of winning it. My plan is to enter my Spock statue model into the contest. I think I could possibly round up a lot of votes in the Star Trek/Space fan groups on Facebook. (The contest requires Facebook membership of anyone voting.) So here is the strategy I am going to try. The last day for submitting models is Monday (tomorrow). Then the last day for voting is the following Sunday (the 15th). So I am going to enter the Spock model in as close to the deadline as I feel is safe. The reason is that the voting page is showing the entries in order of submission, with most recently submitted being on the top of the first page. So I am hoping to be among the last submissions, so that it stays visible as the first thing one sees when they go to vote. (However, I suspect I am not alone in this strategy, so I'm anticipating a rush at the end tomorrow.) Then a bit later in the week, I will send out reminders in the owl groups showing where to go to vote. The voting is different from the last time, which allowed everyone to vote for the same entry once per day throughout the voting period. This time, any given person can vote for any given model ONE TIME. (I'm guessing the company changed that because they didn't want to have to verify almost a thousand votes like they did last time!) The odd thing about this is that it means I can enter multiple models and anyone can vote for any of them, but only once per model. So I'm hoping to make a push toward the end of the week to try to rack up votes. So look for an e-mailing at that time, as a reminder. At first I wasn't going to try for this one, but the more I thought about it, the better it sounded. For one thing, this is giving away a AiO printer, which stands for All-In-One. It has a 3D scanner built into it, so it is a bigger brother to the printer I have been using on loan here. And yes, the money was raised for the purchase of a printer, but if I could manage to win one instead, that money could go toward buying consumables such as filament and casting materials, and for other tools for facilitating the casting process (like a vacuum chamber). So anyway, that is what has been going on here. Lots of busy time, but the 3D printing is coming along swimmingly, and I am getting close to having a working bobblehead prototype! Things are progressing at the Casa de Vaca. I hope you all have a great week coming up. |

VacaDude and is family | Condolences go out to VacaDude and his family on the death of his brother-in-law, Duke after a long struggle following a stroke. Keep them all in your prayers.
KSBorn | KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.
VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin | UPDATE: WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!! "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."
TheDaddyBird, | TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. Believe it or not, they rescheduled it!! Now he's waiting until March 23 for the surgery. He's okay with it now, but at first, after all the anticipation and dread, the rescheduling was a real bummer. They are doing the replacement anterior instead of posterior so his recovery time should be much shorter. His stay in the hospital is expected to be only about 2˝ days.
Marilyn Crabb | UPDATE:
Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast
tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will
be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer
is removed! My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream. (Marilyn from Los Angeles) |
||
Littleguys | UPDATE:
The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years. Pinched
nerve. Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we
find out why. Not the joints. X-ray, then MRI showed that
the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the
other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in
the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column
and go down the leg. Taking care of it all got delayed.
The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if
it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can
kill and pinched nerves won't. Caused weight gain, since I
can't walk as much as I used to...LOL
Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back. Three options. First one, surgery, no one wants. Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone. Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming. I really
need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this
weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Elsalynda | Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.
GentleDoe | Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance &
a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My
mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her
taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now
owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's
home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to
put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my
father & my parent's house. I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation. Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again. |

A Message from Zorro |
Hello there, Everbuddy!
Zorro the Mouse here. Well, it has sure been bizzy
around here! First there was all the getting the photos
ready for the contest, and then there has been all this
3D Printing... I'm still trying to get my time in on the
printer. There are all things a mouse could use that a
printer would be perfect for making! For one thing, I
could design some armor for some of my cousins--that
kind of thing would give them a fighting chance against
all those barn owls! I have been watching some of the
webcams, and this year is seeing a LOT of hatching!
Frankly, I'm a little skeered for my cousins--I think
they may need some protection.
I see they have managed to get the space probe into an orbit around the dwarf-planet Ceres. It has these two bright lights on it when it is facing the sun a certain way. I think there is a giant cat living there, and it's watching us. I have seen those bright eyes light up like that at night. So I'm telling all my cousins to watch out for Ceres, as well. Well, today is a bizzy day, so I had better get back to it. I'll talk with y'all later! |

and influential young critic of the sixties and seventies, a central figure in the
aesthetic bouleversement of that period.…"
Joan Acocella, The New Yorker, January 10, 2005
DID YOU KNOW?
English picked up bouleversement from French in the latter part of the 18th century
(it ultimately traces to Middle French boule, meaning "ball," and verser, meaning "to overturn"),
and while not very common, it has steadily remained in use since that time.
F. Scott Fitzgerald, for one, used it in his 1920 novel This Side of Paradise: "For the second time
in his life Amory had had a complete bouleversement and was hurrying into line with
his generation." Both Fitzgerald's use and our first example sentence suggest the idea of turning
something around, but as shown in our second example, some usage of bouleversement
dispenses with this notion and instead implies a general kind of upheaval
or dramatic change, as in a revolution.
