The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat.
If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out
link. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Prayer Requests |
Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
Here's a big day-of-the-VacaChat greetings to you! I hope y'all
have had a good week. Personally, this week has been up and down
for me. But then, that's life. Hopefully the down parts won't
make me too morose on the broadcast tonight. But hey, having a
large, furry mouse as a co-host helps to keep things
lightened-up!
Yes, I haven't talked about it too much this week, but my Brother-In-Law Duke passed away last Sunday night. I am going to be heading to Roseville tomorrow morning to attend his service and interment. So it was a week of remembrances with my family, as we contemplated the life of this man. Later in the week I learned that Valerie's (Caboval) dog Joey went to the Rainbow Bridge. Then on Friday I had another blow, and that was the passing of Leonard Nimoy. As most of you know, I have always been a HUGE Star Trek fan, and so the loss of the man who invented the character of Mr. Spock was like losing another member of the family. So as my combination coping/avoidance behavior, I have been taking to 3D printing with a vengeance. I have even changed my sleep patterns to accommodate it, because the printer is just loud enough so as to disturb Mary when she is trying to sleep. So I print by day and build 3D models in the software by night. I have learned such a huge amount in these last couple of weeks, and I'm terribly excited about the whole industry. It has really changed the way I approach light-manufacturing on a daily basis. So I will most likely be talking a fair amount about that. I've also got this photography contest coming up that I am trying to get materials prepared for. And that's my usual strategy--stay so busy that I don't leave myself much time for grieving. Also, there are the Oscars to talk about tonight, as well as a white, black, blue, and gold dress! (Oh, hopefully not too much about the latter, for the love of all that is holy.) Hope to see you there! |
||
Cheers, VacaDude | ||

Ketaki | Ketaki sent us a fun story and several pictures. It's a little long to be included here, so her story has it's own page. You can see it HERE.
Jes63 | New Pictures of Jes and Bailey.
Sharoot | Sharoot's featured pictures can be found
at the end of each newsletter, under Photos of the
Week. She says that since they are located at the end, then "Sharoot's
the Caboose!" Today Sharoot shares pictures of a bird with a big beak who stuck around after tasting the fare at the Coughlin Birdie Bistro. She also shares more about her Harris's Sparrow that visited a few months ago. You can read about that here. |
||
ChatterChopz | ChatterChopz and DotRot are proud to announce the completion and publication of a book all about CC! It's entitled Unexpected Lessons From My Daughter: The Blessings of Parenting a Special Needs Child. If you want to read it, it is available in both Paperback and Kindle formats. It's got dozens of photos of CC, from birth to present. You can view it or purchase it here: http://goo.gl/RjCFT3 (At present, Amazon has discounted the paperback version by over $4!) If you DO read the book, please leave a review at Amazon. The more reviews I get, the more likely Amazon is to promote the book.
Elsalynda | Elsalynda's latest column entitled Nature in the
City: Say ‘Uncle,’ Somebody, is available online here: http://waltham.wickedlocal.com/article/20150223/NEWS/150229362?template=printart Make sure you check out the photo accompanying the article!!! Elsa also tells us that she has had a poem selected for publication. She says she is very excited to be a part of this book and feels like a poet in good company, with known authors. Her poem on Great Horned Owls has a page with a beautiful photo opposite. Her writing group helped her with this piece. The book, Secrets of Wisdom by Joyce Gerrish, is now available at Amazon. |

We'd love to include more news of VacaChatters. If you have something you'd like to share (something about you or your family) or if you know of exciting news about another chatter that they're just too shy to share, please send it to us! (We won’t run it without that chatter’s permission, however.)
VacaDude's Brother-in-law, Duke |
For latest update, see the note from the Dude above. I extend a thank you from my entire family. Keep the prayers coming! Duke married my oldest sister Beverly in the late 1950s. Because my parents were at an advanced age when they had me (Mom was 41, dad was 46), and my dad had a massive heart attack when I was three, they made arrangements with Bebe and Duke that they would raise me until I was 18. So Duke was only a couple of heartbeats away from being my dad. As it was, we were very close, and I did a lot of camping and road trips with them. They never did have children of their own. |
||
KSBorn | KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.
VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin | UPDATE: WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!! "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."
TheDaddyBird, | TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. Believe it or not, they rescheduled it!! Now he's waiting until March 23 for the surgery. He's okay with it now, but at first, after all the anticipation and dread, the rescheduling was a real bummer. They are doing the replacement anterior instead of posterior so his recovery time should be much shorter. His stay in the hospital is expected to be only about 2½ days.
Marilyn Crabb | UPDATE:
Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast
tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will
be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer
is removed! My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream. (Marilyn from Los Angeles) |
||
Littleguys | UPDATE:
The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years. Pinched
nerve. Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we
find out why. Not the joints. X-ray, then MRI showed that
the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the
other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in
the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column
and go down the leg. Taking care of it all got delayed.
The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if
it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can
kill and pinched nerves won't. Caused weight gain, since I
can't walk as much as I used to...LOL
Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back. Three options. First one, surgery, no one wants. Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone. Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming. I really
need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this
weight, and show my horses in halter classes.
|
||
Caboval | Joey has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Please keep Caboval in your prayers.
Elsalynda | Keep Elsalynda in your prayers as she struggles with health, computer and weather related issues.
GentleDoe | Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance &
a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My
mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her
taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now
owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's
home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to
put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my
father & my parent's house. I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation. Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again. |

A Message from Zorro |
Hello there, Everbuddy!
Zorro the Mouse here. It has been sad around here the
last few days. I never got a chance to meet the Dude's
brother-in-law, but I heard he was a pretty cool Dude.
At one point, I hear that Duke was prepared to be the
Dude's daddy in the event of an emergency! That would
have been bizarre. And then of course there was the loss
of Spock. I have spent many hours around here watching
Star Trek episodes with the Dude. Spock was always so
logical, philosophical, and just downright COOL.
So yes, we have been doing a lot of 3D printing around here. I am frankly kind of amazed at the wide array of gizmos and do-dads that are piling up on the Dude's desk. Some of it will turn out quite useful. Others...well...it's a process! And of course, the Oscars last week were very dazzling and sparkly. And the big prize went to Birdman. Frankly, I'm not too fond of anything that large that flies. I had my hands full just with a barn owl once--that's enough for me!! Well, lots of preppies to make before the show tonight, so it is time to get goink! Hope to see you there! |

Green Velvet
Sugar Cookie Bars |
|||
Ingredients | |||
Cookie Bars: 2½ cups all purpose flour 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder ½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoons salt 14 tablespoons unsalted butter, room
temperature 1½ cups granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon white vinegar 1 tablespoon green food coloring Frosting: 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature 4 tablespoon unsalted butter, room
temperature 1½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups powdered sugar, not packed Golden sprinkles (yellow sugar) and/or gold foil
wrapped chocolate coins
|
|||
Directions | |||
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9x13-inch glass
baking dish with cooking spray and set aside. In a large bowl mix together 2½ cups all-purpose
flour, 2 tablespoons cocoa powder,½ teaspoon baking powder, and ½
teaspoon salt. Cream together the 14 tablespoons (1¾ sticks) butter
and 1½ cups sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs, one at a
time, then 2 teaspoons vanilla, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and 1
tablespoon green food coloring. Slowly add in the flour mixture a little bit at a
time until the dough is fully combined. The dough will be very sticky. Press it into the
bottom of the baking dish and bake for 20 to 22 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool
completely. Meanwhile, mix together the butter and cream cheese
until fully combined. Add the vanilla extract. Slowly mix in the
powdered sugar until fully combined. Spread over the cooled bars and top
with golden sprinkles and/or top each piece with a foil wrapped
chocolate coin. |
|||
Strawberry Krispies Treats |
|||
Ingredients: | |||
Pretzel Crust: 2 cups crushed pretzels
⅓ cup granulated sugar 11 tablespoons salted butter, melted Brownies: 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, melted 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 cups granulated sugar 4 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1¼ cups flour 12-ounce jar hot fudge sauce Caramel Filling: 11-ounce bag Kraft caramel bits 3 tablespoons heavy cream Topping: 1 cup creamy peanut butter
⅔ cup crushed pretzels (optional)
|
|||
Ingredients: | |||
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9x13-inch pan with
foil and spray thoroughly with nonstick spray. In a large bowl, combine crust ingredients. Press
evenly into pan and bake for 9 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes or until
no longer hot to the touch. Prepare brownies: In a large bowl, whisk together
the cocoa and melted butter. Stir in sugar until combined. Stir in eggs,
one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla. Fold in flour
JUST until you no longer see flour streaks in the batter. Gently fold in
hot fudge sauce (you may need to heat it just enough to spoon/pour out
of jar). Spread HALF of the brownie batter over the prepared
crust and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 10
minutes. In a microwave safe bowl, heat caramel bits and
heavy cream, stopping to stir every 30 seconds until smooth. Pour melted
caramel over brownie, then evenly spoon remaining brownie mix over the
surface of the caramel. CAREFULLY spread the brownie mix to cover. You
may get a bit of caramel that oozes up over the surface -- this is okay.
The batter will puff up in the oven to cover most of it. No worries if
it looks a bit messy! Evenly spoon peanut butter over the top of the
brownie layer. Using a sharp knife, gently swirl the peanut butter and
brownie batter together. Sprinkle with pretzel crumbs and place back in
the oven and bake for another 20 minutes or so, until a knife inserted
in the brownies comes up with gooey caramel and fudgy crumbs, but no raw
batter. Let brownies cool to room temperature, then chill until firm. Grabbing the ends of the foil, remove brownies from
pan. Peel off the foil and cut into squares and serve. |

Zorro's Word of the Week |
CAITIFF
Pronunciation: \KAY-tif\
adjective
Definition of CAITIFF
cowardly, despicable
EXAMPLES
"Oh, horrible wretch! a murderer! unmanly murderer!—a defenceless woman smothered by caitiff hands!"
— Edward Bulwer-Lytton, What Will He Do With It?, 1858
"… the Vichy cabinet accepted the German offer of air support from Sicily and
Sardinia.
This caitiff decision enabled the Germans to take the quick, decisive action of occupying airfields in Tunisia,
with all its costly consequences upon our campaign."
— Winston Churchill, The Hinge of Fate, 1950
DID YOU KNOW?
Caitiff is pretty rare in contemporary use, but it has functioned since the 14th century
as an adjective and also as a noun meaning "a base, cowardly, or despicable person"
(as in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure: "O thou caitiff! O thou varlet! O thou wicked Hannibal!")
Both the adjective and the noun evolved from the Anglo-French adjective caitif, meaning "wretched,
despicable." The French word in turn derived from the Latin captivus, meaning "captive"—the
shift from "captive" to "wretched" being perhaps prompted by the perception of captives as
wretched and worthy of scorn.
Name That Synonym:
What four-letter adjective beginning with "v" is a synonym of
caitiff? The answer is …
Vile
