Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Oscar weekend to you! We have got the popcorn ready, and we're good to go on the Academy Awards show. It's a yearly tradition around here, even though we never get a chance to get out and see the shows beforehand. This year we only managed one--we saw "The Imitation Game" last weekend. Oh well--I am sure there are some great movies to be seen out there--at some point!

Oh, and I think I closed the last VacaChat with confusion about how the Oscars might be in conflict with the next broadcast, because I was thinking they might be next weekend. Of course that's not true, so I shall be broadcasting next Sunday night.

The main big news around here involves 3D Printing. The loaner printer from XYZprinting finally arrived on Tuesday! So for the last several days, I have been setting-up, running tests, and printing stuff. I have been immersed into a world of rafts, supports, extruders, ABS slurries, densities, gear ratios, and everything. Every day it seems I learn something new and vital. Every day it seems that something changes the way I have always approached light manufacturing and prototyping. Suffice it to say, I am having a grand time with this machine. Also, I think it safe to say that next weekend's broadcast will be pretty heavily dominated with talks and show&tells involving 3D printing. I hope you can make it!

I want to thank everyone for the concern given my little health scare last week. There have not been any major episodes since, so I am of the opinion that it was just the anxiety and stress of the situation that triggered it. Unfortunately, the source of the stress has not gone away, and in fact--my brother-in-law is slipping away from us. He is at home and is receiving 24-hour care, just to make him as comfortable as possible. But he is losing energy every day. I am going to try to get back up there this week, as it may be a goodbye.

But on a lighter note, did anyone see the conjunction in the sky on Thursday? The Moon, Mars, and Venus all got fairly close. I was able to get a bunch of pictures of that, and they all fit within the same frame! It was quite a sight to behold. I'm going to enclose a photo of that--in case you had clouds or fog where you were. I'll also show it on the chat next week.

Well, my print job is getting close to finishing, so I should get the next batch ready to go. I am pretty much having to print during the day, as the machine is a bit noisy to be running during sleeptime.

Hope to see you next week!
  Cheers, VacaDude

It's entitled Unexpected Lessons From My Daughter: The Blessings of Parenting a Special Needs Child. If you want to read it, it is available in both Paperback and Kindle formats. It's got dozens of photos of CC, from birth to present. You can view it or purchase it here:  http://goo.gl/RjCFT3  (At present, Amazon has discounted the paperback version by over $4!)   VacaDude's Brother-in-law, Duke For latest update, see the note from the Dude above.

I extend a thank you from my entire family.  Keep the prayers coming!

Duke married my oldest sister Beverly in the late 1950s. Because my parents were at an advanced age when they had me (Mom was 41, dad was 46), and my dad had a massive heart attack when I was three, they made arrangements with Bebe and Duke that they would raise me until I was 18. So Duke was only a couple of heartbeats away from being my dad. As it was, we were very close, and I did a lot of camping and road trips with them. They never did have children of their own.

KSBorn KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.

VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin UPDATE:  WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!  "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."

TheDaddyBird, TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. We finally got the referral to the orthopedic surgeon who takes our insurance. His surgery will happen on March 2. They are doing the replacement anterior instead of posterior so his recovery time should be much shorter. His stay in the hospital is expected to be only about 2½ days.

Marilyn Crabb UPDATE:  Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer is removed!

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years.  Pinched nerve.  Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we find out why.  Not the joints.  X-ray, then MRI showed that the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column and go down the leg.  Taking care of it all got delayed.  The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can kill and pinched nerves won't.  Caused weight gain, since I can't walk as much as I used to...LOL

Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back.  Three options.  First one, surgery, no one wants.  Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone.  Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming.  I really need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Caboval Caboval is in need of our prayers for her dog, Joey. You can read more about Joey and his struggles here: http://gfwd.at/1n8NU0h.

LATEST UPDATE on Joey! Caboval writes: “Oh Joey isn't doing good and I'm so worried. He made it through cancer and is in remission and survived liver failure but something has happened to his leg. He had X-rays and there's no break but it looked like his neck had a pinched nerve. So, I'm doing cold laser therapy and no improvement. I'm doing chiropractor sessions, no improvement. Then on Friday he had acupuncture and now Joey can't walk at all on his leg and it's now been 4 weeks and no improvement. I had a prayer group for him on Facebook. I think the acupuncture somehow has hit nerves in his leg and he can't walk at all. I don't have any hope that he will be able to walk again and I'm at the point I may have to make a decision this coming week. I'm heartbroken and I'm praying for a miracle. I'm devastated and he is only 6 years old. I wish I had better news. Can you say a prayer for him?”

Elsalynda We got this message from elsa last week:

Hi all,

My computer crashed today and is at Staples in a kind of messy corner being diagnosed. I think it was my fault. I cannot even do my column this week, sigh. Say a prayer for me. So I will probably not see you on Sunday but "Hi," from me to all.

Your elsalynda

GentleDoe Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance & a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my father & my parent's house.

I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation.

Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

It is Zorro the Mouse here. Happy weekend to you! I hope you are not having to spend too much of it shoveling snow. Of course, it has been dry as a bone around here lately. We keep hoping for some rain, but it all goes to the north of us. I hope that 3D printer thingie can print some water molecules--we may need that for drinking this summer!

Yes, I and a lot of my furry friends have had to move aside a bit to make way for the monster printer! Didn't realize it was going to be so big. And of course, since it is about the size of an owlbox, we have had trouble with Einstein, Vinky, and Vobble all camping out inside it! One of these days one of those guys is going to wind up inside a flower vase or something...

I've been trying to help the Dude with the printing, but it is all very technical. So I just keep reheating his coffee for him, and he keeps cranking out stuff. It has mostly been little test objects, as he is trying to convince XYZprinting to send more filament. I think he is nearly halfway through the one roll they sent, and it hasn't even been a week yet. Yesterday he started working on the owl bobblehead designs, so he is finally able to start working on that--given all the stuff he's learned about the printing process. I think that will be fun--I look forward to having some bobbleheads join us for the VacaChats!

Well, tonight is the big Oscars awards show, which means popcorn!! I think the Dude is going to try to have some print jobs lined up for when the show is running. Something involving gears, I think. The clock is ticking, and he wants to get the most out of the loaner period as he can!

Well, I'm off to do my Sunday best. See you next week for StoryTime!!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Today we feature some of the recipes from the last story.

Lasagna Roll-ups

  Ingredients

Bechamel Sauce:
   2 tablespoons unsalted butter
   4 teaspoons all-purpose flour
   1¼ cups whole milk
   ¼ teaspoon salt
   teaspoon ground black pepper
   Pinch ground nutmeg
Meat Sauce:
   2 tablespoons olive oil
   1 whole medium onion, diced
   3 cloves garlic, minced
   1½ pound ground beef
   ½ pound Italian sausage
   28 ounces canned diced tomatoes
   8 ounces tomato paste
   1 teaspoon salt
   1 teaspoon black pepper
   3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
   3 Tablespoons minced fresh basil
Filling:
   1 (2-pound) container ricotta cheese
2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese, divided
   ⅓ cup grated Parmesan cheese
   3 eggs
3 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto, chopped
   1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
   1 teaspoon salt
12 to 14 lasagna noodles, prepared according to package directions

  Directions

To make the béchamel sauce: Melt the butter in a heavy medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the flour and whisk for 3 minutes. Whisk in the milk. Increase the heat to medium-high. Whisk the sauce until it comes to a simmer and is thick and smooth, about 3 minutes. Whisk the salt, pepper, and nutmeg into the béchamel sauce.

To make the meat sauce: In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic and cook for a couple of minutes. Add the ground beef and sausage and stir it around, cooking it until totally browned. Drain excess fat, then add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, pepper, parsley, and basil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 450°

Butter a 13-by-9-by-2-inch glass baking dish. Pour the bechamel sauce over the bottom of the prepared dish. Lay out 4 lasagna noodles on a work surface, then spread a large spoonful (about 3 tablespoons worth) of ricotta mixture evenly over each noodle. Starting at 1 end, roll each noodle like a jelly roll. Lay the lasagna rolls seam side down, without touching, atop the bechamel sauce in the dish. Repeat with the remaining noodles and ricotta mixture. Spoon 1-1½ cups of meat sauce over the lasagna rolls. Sprinkle the mozzarella and remaining 2 tablespoons of Parmesan over the lasagna rolls. Cover tightly with foil. Bake until heated through and the sauce bubbles, about 20 minutes. Uncover and bake until the cheese on top becomes golden, about 15 minutes longer. Let stand for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the remaining meat sauce in a heavy small saucepan over medium heat until hot, and serve alongside.

Strawberry Krispies Treats

  Ingredients:

3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 8-ounce bag Kraft Jet-Puffed Strawberry Heart Mallows
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 box (4.5 oz.) strawberry Jell-O
5 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
1 12-ounce package white chocolate chips
Sprinkles (optional)

  Ingredients:

Line a 9x13x2-inch baking pan with foil or parchment paper. Spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Add in marshmallows and stir until marshmallows are completely melted. Remove pan from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Add Jell-O and Rice Krispies and stir until well incorporated.

Using a silicone spatula sprayed with nonstick cooking spray, spread the mixture evenly into pan. When firm, remove from pan and cut into sqares (about 1½ inches). If desired, cut treats out using a heart shaped cookie cutter.

Melt white chocolate chips in the microwave or double boiler. Drizzle chocolate over the Krispies squares. If desired, sprinkle the top with festive sprinkles.

I also like to make this using plain marshmallows and adding cherry flavored Jell-O and some cherry flavored chips and dried cherries to the mix. It's also good with Raspberry Jell-O and craisins mixed in.

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

I thought you might enjoy this photo of the conjunction from the other night.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has reported an irruption of Pine Siskins to parts the south this winter.

Well guess who showed up this week!  They must have heard about the dining delights in our yard.

This is the first time I have seen these since leaving Maine some 10 years ago.

They are about the size of a Goldfinch, and like hanging out with them.

They are quite striped with yellow on their wings and a little on their tail,

and have a pointier beak than the Goldfinch.

They are busy, busy little birds, and we are happy to have them here!"

Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple groaner" riddles and jokes.
Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy!

What's black and white and makes a lot of noise?
A zebra with a drum set.

What is the golden rule for cattle?
Do unto udders as you would have udders do unto you.

What do you get when you cross a caterpillar and a parrot?
A walkie talkie!

A mother pigeon was teaching a baby pigeon to fly. The baby pigeon said, "I can't make it; I'll get too tired." His mother said, "Don't worry; I'll tie a piece of string to one of your legs, and the other end to mine." The baby started to cry. "What's wrong?" said the mother. He responded, "I don't want to be pigeon towed!"

What did one snowman say to the other?
Does it smell like carrots to you?

Zorro's Word
of the Week

LORN

Pronunciation:   \LORN\

adjective

Definition of LORN

desolate, forsaken

EXAMPLES

"One large saucepan lay lorn near the doorstep, a proof that Foster was human."

 — From Arnold Bennett's 1910 novel Clayhanger

"It's a bit unsettling here seeing slides, climbing structures, and the like lost in lone, lorn decay."

 — From a photography exhibit review by Mark Feeney in The Boston Globe, December 2, 2011

DID YOU KNOW?

"Lorn" and "forlorn" are synonyms that can both mean "desolate" or "forsaken."

The similarity in form and meaning of the two words is hardly a coincidence.

"Lorn" comes down to us from "loren," the Middle English past participle of the verb "lesen" ("to lose"),

itself a descendent of the Old English "lēosan." Similarly, "forlorn" comes from the Middle English "forloren,"

a descendent of Old English verb "forlēosan," which also means "to lose."

The "for-" in "forlorn" is a no longer productive prefix meaning, among other things, "completely,"

"excessively," or "to exhaustion." Nowadays, "forlorn" is considerably more common than "lorn."

"Lorn" does, however, appear as the second element in the compound "lovelorn" ("bereft of love or of a lover").
