The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat.
If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out
link. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

Pop-Out |
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory. |

|
If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Prayer Requests |
Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day. We actually went out
to the movies, and it was pretty funny. As we were going into
our movie ("The Imitation Game"), a lot of couples were coming
out of a different movie--50 Shades of Grey. I assure you, they
were in a much different mood than we were when we came out of
our movie!
I enjoyed the movie a great deal, though it was difficult to watch. It is about the British mathematician Alan Turing, but I didn't realize the movie was going to show so much of what happened at the end of his life, which is one of the most tragic tales of all time. Turing was an early pioneer in the field of computer science, and I learned much about him as I studied it in college. He built one of the early computing machines that broke the Nazi encryption codes, which probably shortened WW2 by at least two years. But then a few years after the war he was found with another man, and homosexuality in England was illegal. He was given a choice between prison and probation with a forced "therapy" and he chose the latter so that he could continue with his work. However, the therapy destroyed his mind and within a couple of years he took his own life. So that's the kind of movie we have a tendency to take in on Valentine's Day. That's just how we roll... In more cheerful news, SpaceX finally got their satellite launched. Unfortunately, the ocean was too rough to attempt to land the booster back aboard their drone ship. They went through the motions, though, and it looks like it would have worked if the ship had been there. They basically brought it down to a hover and then shut off the engine and let it plunk down into the water. A not-so-dry "dry run," as it were. This will be an interesting mission once the satellite reaches its final orbit in a few months. It is set up to have a camera trained on Earth from the L1 LaGrange point--a spot about a million miles from Earth. We will be able to go onto a website and download an almost live photo of Earth from a high-res camera. I look forward to that, and to seeing animations made from those images. It should give us a pretty spectacular view of our planet. I have a bit of an update on my brother-in-law Duke. I drove to Roseville to see him last week. He is back home, which is a situation of his choosing. He is requiring constant care, and even then his health is deteriorating. We in the family are all just taking it a day at a time. I had a bit of a scare myself on the drive up there--I stopped off to get some breakfast, which I ate in my car. Just as I was getting ready to get back on the road, I got hit with a dizzy spell, and even blacked out for a few seconds. I guess it was mostly from the stress. Anyway, I was able to continue on, but then I had another spell while I was at Duke's place. I have since checked my blood pressure and it seems okay, so I guess I need to set up a doctor appointment this upcoming week. Well, that's about it for me. I need to try to get my new website finished today, so that I can try to drum up some new projects. Have a great week, y'all! |

Cheers, VacaDude | ||

Jes63 | Jes's new furbaby has arrived. We'd like to introduce Miss Bailey, a very timid 4˝ year old. She normally has more fur but she was shaved down and her beard cut off before they sent her to Jes. You won't recognize her once her fur grows back in.
Sharoot | Sharoot's featured pictures can be found
at the end of each newsletter, under Photos of the
Week. She says that since they are located at the end, then "Sharoot's
the Caboose!" Today Sharoot shares pictures of a rather wayward bird visiting the Coughlin Bistro. |
||
ChatterChopz | ChatterChopz and DotRot are proud to announce the completion and publication of a book all about CC! It's entitled Unexpected Lessons From My Daughter: The Blessings of Parenting a Special Needs Child. If you want to read it, it is available in both Paperback and Kindle formats. It's got dozens of photos of CC, from birth to present. You can view it or purchase it here: http://goo.gl/RjCFT3 (At present, Amazon has discounted the paperback version by over $4!) If you DO read the book, please leave a review at Amazon. The more reviews I get, the more likely Amazon is to promote the book.
Elsalynda | Elsalynda's latest column entitled Nature In the
City: Winter Vignettes, is available online here: http://waltham.wickedlocal.com/article/20150204/NEWS/150209846 Make sure you check out the photo accompanying the article!!! Elsa also tells us that she has had a poem selected for publication. She says she is very excited to be a part of this book and feels like a poet in good company, with known authors. Her poem on Great Horned Owls has a page with a beautiful photo opposite. Her writing group helped her with this piece. The book, Secrets of Wisdom by Joyce Gerrish, is now available at Amazon. |

VacaDude's Brother-in-law, Duke |
For latest update, see the note from the Dude above. I extend a thank you from my entire family. Keep the prayers coming! Duke married my oldest sister Beverly in the late 1950s. Because my parents were at an advanced age when they had me (Mom was 41, dad was 46), and my dad had a massive heart attack when I was three, they made arrangements with Bebe and Duke that they would raise me until I was 18. So Duke was only a couple of heartbeats away from being my dad. As it was, we were very close, and I did a lot of camping and road trips with them. They never did have children of their own. |
||
KSBorn | KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.
VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin | UPDATE: WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!! "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."
TheDaddyBird, | TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. We finally got the referral to the orthopedic surgeon who takes our insurance. His surgery will happen on March 2. They are doing the replacement anterior instead of posterior so his recovery time should be much shorter. His stay in the hospital is expected to be only about 2˝ days.
Marilyn Crabb | UPDATE:
Hi! I survived six months of chemotherapy. I'll have my breast
tumor and left axillary nodes removed on Friday, Feb. 13. Radiation will
be next. Please pray that the surgeon does a good job and all my cancer
is removed! My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream. (Marilyn from Los Angeles) |
||
Littleguys | UPDATE:
The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years. Pinched
nerve. Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we
find out why. Not the joints. X-ray, then MRI showed that
the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the
other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in
the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column
and go down the leg. Taking care of it all got delayed.
The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if
it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can
kill and pinched nerves won't. Caused weight gain, since I
can't walk as much as I used to...LOL
Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back. Three options. First one, surgery, no one wants. Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone. Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming. I really
need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this
weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Caboval | Caboval is in need of our prayers for her dog, Joey. You can read more about Joey and his struggles here: http://gfwd.at/1n8NU0h.
LATEST UPDATE on Joey! Caboval writes: “Oh Joey isn't doing good and I'm so worried. He made it through cancer and is in remission and survived liver failure but something has happened to his leg. He had X-rays and there's no break but it looked like his neck had a pinched nerve. So, I'm doing cold laser therapy and no improvement. I'm doing chiropractor sessions, no improvement. Then on Friday he had acupuncture and now Joey can't walk at all on his leg and it's now been 4 weeks and no improvement. I had a prayer group for him on Facebook. I think the acupuncture somehow has hit nerves in his leg and he can't walk at all. I don't have any hope that he will be able to walk again and I'm at the point I may have to make a decision this coming week. I'm heartbroken and I'm praying for a miracle. I'm devastated and he is only 6 years old. I wish I had better news. Can you say a prayer for him?”
Elsalynda | We got this message from elsa last week: Hi all, My computer crashed today and is at Staples in a kind of messy corner being diagnosed. I think it was my fault. I cannot even do my column this week, sigh. Say a prayer for me. So I will probably not see you on Sunday but "Hi," from me to all. Your elsalynda |
||
GentleDoe | Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance &
a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My
mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her
taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now
owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's
home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to
put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my
father & my parent's house. I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation. Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again. |

Recipe of the Week |
A Message from Zorro |
Hello there, Everbuddy!
Zorro the Mouse here. I hope you all had a wonderful day
of hearts and roses! Or livers and sagebrush--depends on
what you are into. Myself, I sent a dozen roses and a
heart-shaped box of cheese to Zorrina, and she seemed
very appreciative. So far, she has not offered to share
any of the cheese with me, but that's not really the
point, I guess. That's why I bought two boxes! One for
my Valentine, and one for the Valentine-giver. We might
go see a movie later--there is a new movie out just for
mousies, called "50 Shades of Whey." Once I saw the
preview, I said to Zorrina "ricotta go see that!"
Hmmm. Where is the Dude's iPhone? I think I need his rim-shot sound effect... Speaking of the iPhone, the Dude made a fun gizmo. He had been wanting an amplifier dock for his phone that he could keep in the garage. That way we could listen to music while we work. Well, he got the idea to make this contraption out of PVC pipes. He calls it a "passive amplifier." I call it a "habitrail" because it is just like those plastic thingies that kids used to keep their pet gerbils in. I like to run around inside the pipes. From the shocked expression I saw on the Dude's face, I think he was expecting to get more volume out of it. Either that, or he was NOT expecting to see a mouse pop out of the speaker cone! I guess I should have warned him that I was in there. I think he'll be fine again once he comes to... Anyway, time to get on with my mousie activities! Have a great week!! |

From the Dude
I thought you might enjoy this photo of a bird in our backyard.
Sharoot's Caboose
Sharoot shares,
"The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has reported an irruption of Pine Siskins to parts the south this winter.
Well guess who showed up this week! They must have heard about the dining delights in our yard.
This is the first time I have seen these since leaving Maine some 10 years ago.
They are about the size of a Goldfinch, and like hanging out with them.
They are quite striped with yellow on their wings and a little on their tail,
and have a pointier beak than the Goldfinch.
They are busy, busy little birds, and we are happy to have them here!"
Kyle's well known among his friends for his "triple
groaner" riddles and jokes. Now he shares them with VacaFamily. Enjoy! |

Zorro's Word of the Week |
CREPITATE
Pronunciation: \KREP-uh-tayt\
verb
Definition of CREPITATE
to make a crackling sound : to make a series of short, sharp noises
EXAMPLES
Most of the tiny town's residents had something to contribute to the bonfire,
and it burned brightly and crepitated loudly late into the
night.
"A familiar synthetic beat starts the disc…. The band slowly fills in around the
pulse,
wind blowing through tunnels, factories moaning, yawning infrastructure,
broken, creaking. Embers of some final blast crepitating."
— From a music review by David King in Metroland, October 17, 2013
DID YOU KNOW?
"Crepitate" comes from the Latin word "crepitare," meaning "to crackle."
It has been used with this meaning since the late 1820s, but it had a previous life:
about 200 years prior it was used to mean "to break wind." That meaning is now obsolete,
and the word has no embarrassing remnants. In addition to its general use as a synonym of "crackle,"
"crepitate" also has a specific medical meaning—"to produce or experience crepitation."
"Crepitation" here refers to a grating or crackling sound or sensation, such as that produced
by the fractured ends of a bone moving against each other.
