Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
A happy, rainy Sunday to you all! Yes, I said rainy. As I write this, it is pouring rain outside--a most welcome thing these days in California. We are just coming off a nearly bone-dry January, which has everyone fearing drought and water rationing for the summer. So any rain is good rain, as it will help get those levels up for our reservoirs.

A lot of things are going on this week--some good, and some not so good. One big thing that is going on today is that SpaceX is getting ready to launch another one of their spacecraft (launching a satellite), and they will be making another attempt at recovering the first stage booster on a drone ship. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed! (They came very close to accomplishing it last month.) That launch is set for 6:10 pm EST today. So on tonight's broadcast I should be able to report one of three things--success, failure, or launch delay.

One bit of news that came out last week, but was hardly a surprise--the fact that Radio Shack was filing for bankruptcy. The Shack has been a part of my life for pretty much the whole of my life, so I'm saddened by this. As many of you know, I am a bit of a tinkerer, so I spend a lot of time there shopping for transistors, diodes, capacitors, and such. Also, I received one of their 150-in-1 experiment kits when I was in high school. In fact, I still have it, and I'm going to be demonstrating that on the broadcast tonight. I went over to one of the two Radio Shacks in town, and was informed that they are both closing. (There had been some talk that a small percentage of stores were going to be converted into Sprint stores.) So truly, it is the end of an era.

Tonight I will also be giving an update on the 3D Printer saga, and some interesting things coming from Google. In short, it should be a fun show and there is lots to talk about! So please feel free to stop by this afternoon at 3pm to help write the story that will be read by our trusty friend Zorro, then come by the broadcast tonight at 6pm PST. Hope to see you then!
  Cheers, VacaDude

Jes63 Jes's new furbaby has arrived. We'd like to introduce Miss Bailey, a very timid 4½ year old. She normally has more fur but she was shaved down and her beard cut off before they sent her to Jes. You won't recognize her once her fur grows back in.

Elsa also tells us that she has had a poem selected for publication. She says she is very excited to be a part of this book and feels like a poet in good company, with known authors. Her poem on Great Horned Owls has a page with a beautiful photo opposite. Her writing group helped her with this piece. The book, Secrets of Wisdom by Joyce Gerrish, is now available at Amazon.

VacaDude's Brother-in-law, Duke I would ask for prayers and well-wishes for my brother-in-law Richard "Duke" Paiz, who suffered a stroke. He is about to be moved to an elder care facility. He was improving but has now hit a plateau. That's why they are moving him. But overall, he is doing much better, considering they were about to disconnect him from life support a few days after the stroke! So the prayers definitely did help!! (I am going to try to get up to visit him this week.) I extend a thank you from my entire family.  Keep the prayers coming!

Duke married my oldest sister Beverly in the late 1950s. Because my parents were at an advanced age when they had me (Mom was 41, dad was 46), and my dad had a massive heart attack when I was three, they made arrangements with Bebe and Duke that they would raise me until I was 18. So Duke was only a couple of heartbeats away from being my dad. As it was, we were very close, and I did a lot of camping and road trips with them. They never did have children of their own.

KSBorn KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.

VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin UPDATE:  WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!  "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."

TheDaddyBird, TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. We finally got the referral to the orthopedic surgeon who takes our insurance. His surgery will happen on March 2. They are doing the replacement anterior instead of posterior so his recovery time should be much shorter. His stay in the hospital is expected to be only about 2½ days.

Marilyn Crabb We received this message this week from a long-time Molly watcher:

I don't join the online chats but I read the newsletter and was a Molly watcher from the beginning.

Last week, I was diagnosed with stage 2B (or greater) breast cancer and am undergoing lots of further tests and will begin chemotherapy on Tuesday. Please add me to the prayer list.

UPDATE:   Thank you for your prayers.  I'm doing really well after my first chemotherapy treatment.  One week down - nineteen to go.  Then surgery and radiation.  I have more tests scheduled to see if the cancer has spread beyond my armpit but so far it does not look like it has.

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  The latest news from Littleguys:
I have been limping a lot over the past two years.  Pinched nerve.  Over a year ago, I put my foot down and insisted we find out why.  Not the joints.  X-ray, then MRI showed that the discs that I slipped years ago, one is flat and the other bulging, plus I have the "not unexpected" arthritis in the vertebrae where the nerves come out of the spinal column and go down the leg.  Taking care of it all got delayed.  The doctors wanted to treat the Breast Cancer first, even if it were only Stage Zero since, as they put it, cancer can kill and pinched nerves won't.  Caused weight gain, since I can't walk as much as I used to...LOL

Anyway, finally got to go back to the doctor about my back.  Three options.  First one, surgery, no one wants.  Second is to inject something, I think it was a type of cortisone.  Third option, I start tonight, taking a pill every night that is supposed to calm down the excited / inflamed, screaming nerves.
Keep your fingers crossed, and prayers coming.  I really need to be able to get out and walk more to get rid of this weight, and show my horses in halter classes.

Caboval Caboval is in need of our prayers for her dog, Joey. You can read more about Joey and his struggles here: http://gfwd.at/1n8NU0h.

LATEST UPDATE on Joey! Caboval writes: “Oh Joey isn't doing good and I'm so worried. He made it through cancer and is in remission and survived liver failure but something has happened to his leg. He had X-rays and there's no break but it looked like his neck had a pinched nerve. So, I'm doing cold laser therapy and no improvement. I'm doing chiropractor sessions, no improvement. Then on Friday he had acupuncture and now Joey can't walk at all on his leg and it's now been 4 weeks and no improvement. I had a prayer group for him on Facebook. I think the acupuncture somehow has hit nerves in his leg and he can't walk at all. I don't have any hope that he will be able to walk again and I'm at the point I may have to make a decision this coming week. I'm heartbroken and I'm praying for a miracle. I'm devastated and he is only 6 years old. I wish I had better news. Can you say a prayer for him?”

Elsalynda We got this message from elsa last week:

Hi all,

My computer crashed today and is at Staples in a kind of messy corner being diagnosed. I think it was my fault. I cannot even do my column this week, sigh. Say a prayer for me. So I will probably not see you on Sunday but "Hi," from me to all.

Your elsalynda

GentleDoe Please pray for me, my house, Section 8 assistance & a resolution to this situation. My sister has POA for my father now. My mother had it until my sister had him sign it over to her prior to her taking him out of the assistive living home & into her home. (She now owns half her home & dad the other half.) Dad had my home & my parent's home put in his name alone, now my sister has POA. She has threatened to put mom in a home & she wants me out of both the house I rented from my father & my parent's house.

I need a house to be able to keep my birds. While my birds are usually quiet, if anything disturbs them they can be quite loud. My 5 birds & 2 bunnies are the only family I have other than my human family. My mother & I have not been able to see or speak to my father since August of last year, 2014. My mother wakes up calling for my father. This is taking its toll on my mother's already fragile health. My health is also struggling but I cannot allow it to be known because I am the only one to stay & care for my mother. My mother would not last long in a home with little if ay visitation.

Thank you all of the Vacafamily and Vriends for the prayers. Hope to get to check in for a few minutes, I've just recently got the internet again.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Zorro the Mouse here. It is getting very nearly time for the broadcast tonight, and for StoryTime. Yay! I know a lot of people miss the sound-effects (I know the Dude misses his computer that he used to run the sound effects on), but I hear tonight the Dude is going to have some sound effects set up in his Radio Shack electronics kit thingie. So that should be interesting. Especially since it is going to be over to his right, which means I may have to be pressing the buttons!

Things have quieted down in the manufacturing area. We finished the Dude's telescope mount, only to find out that it overwhelms the tracking motor of the scope. So now we are designing a new tracking motor and base. And by we, I mean the Dude. I am merely the "project supervisor and cheese taster extraordinaire." Also, we finished making the camera boom, and got a chance to try it out on some photos. That was fun! Of course, I reminded the Dude that he could do the same thing and more if he had a drone, and he gave me that kind of glance that I cannot repeat in polite company. Oh well.

We had a very exciting time watching the Super Bowl last weekend, and ate some very yummy bean dip. What a finish to that game! Now it's time to get ready for baseball again in a few months. :)

Well, there are many preparations to be done for the show tonight, with a brief break to watch the launch of the SpaceX rocket. Not as exciting as our Steampunk Rocket, but those scientists need to have their fun as well...

Hope to see you all tonight!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Bacon and Cornmeal Waffles

  Ingredients

1 cup (250 ml) all-purpose flour
1 cup (250 ml) yellow cornmeal
1 tablespoon (15 ml) sugar
2½ teaspoons (12 ml) double-acting baking powder
½ teaspoon (2 ml) salt
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1¾ cups (440 ml) milk
4 tablespoons (60 ml) butter, melted
10-12 thin slices of bacon, chopped into small pieces (partially precooked in microwave and drained)

  Directions

Sift the dry ingredients together. Stir in the milk, eggs, and melted butter, stirring as little as possible to thoroughly mix the ingredients. Add uncooked bacon. Pour the batter into a preheated waffle iron. Cook according to the manufacturer's instructions, or until steam no longer escapes from the waffle iron. Makes 6 waffles.

Deep Chocolate Brownies

  Ingredients:

1 egg
1 cup butterscotch-flavored ice cream topping
2 cups coarsely chopped pecans
2 cups flaked coconut
¾ cup butter, softened
1½ cups packed dark brown sugar
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted and cooled
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 12-ounce package semisweet chocolate pieces

  Ingredients:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 13x9x2-inch baking pan; set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl beat the 1 egg with an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy and light colored. Stir in ice cream topping. Fold in pecans and coconut; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Beat in brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in cooled chocolate, the 2 eggs, and vanilla. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; beat or stir into chocolate mixture. Stir in chocolate pieces. Spread in prepared pan; spread nut mixture over batter. Bake about 35 minutes or until golden and set. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

Photos of the Week

From the Dude

I thought you might enjoy this photo of a bird in our backyard.

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares,

"The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has reported an irruption of Pine Siskins to parts the south this winter.

Well guess who showed up this week!  They must have heard about the dining delights in our yard.

This is the first time I have seen these since leaving Maine some 10 years ago.

They are about the size of a Goldfinch, and like hanging out with them.

They are quite striped with yellow on their wings and a little on their tail,

and have a pointier beak than the Goldfinch.

They are busy, busy little birds, and we are happy to have them here!"

Zorro's Word
of the Week

DERACINATE

Pronunciation:   \dee-RASS-uh-nayt\

verb

Definition of DERACINATE

1: uproot
2: to remove or separate from a native environment or culture;

especially to remove the racial or ethnic characteristics or influences from

EXAMPLES

The old-fashioned gardening book recommended deracinating every other

plant in the row to allow the survivors room to grow.

"My dilemma was that, on one hand, I am one of those who, by accident of birth, finds herself the

daughter of an earl and has insider knowledge of the framework the bill is trying to overhaul.

On the other hand, I don't use my title and am deracinated from that life."

— From an article by Liza Campbell in The Guardian, January 14, 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

There is a hint about the roots of "deracinate" in its first definition. "Deracinate" was borrowed into

English in the late 16th century from Middle French and can be traced back to the

Latin word "radix," meaning "root." Although "deracinate" began life referring to literal plant roots,

it quickly took on a second metaphorical meaning suggesting removal of anyone or anything from

native "roots" or culture. Other offspring of "radix" include "eradicate" ("to pull up by the roots"

or "to do away with as completely as if by pulling up by the roots") and "radish" (a crisp edible root).

Though the second sense of "deracinate" mentions racial characteristics and influence, the words "racial"

and "race" derive from "razza," an Italian word of uncertain origin.
