Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Super Bowl Sunday to you all! May your team of favor be victorious. Myself, I don't really have a favorite. I used to like Seattle, but I can't stand their head coach and the players are a bunch of loudmouths. I used to be okay with the Patriots, but they seem to skirt the rules a bit much. So it's the Jerks versus the Cheaters, in my book. But that's harsh. I will watch, but I can't say I have a clear favorite.

Today is the last of a series of somber anniversaries for the space program. Last week we had the anniversaries of the Apollo 1 fire, then the next day the loss of the space shuttle Challenger. Today it is the shuttle Columbia--she burned up in re-entry 12 years ago today. So I have been in a bit of a reflective mood lately. I have been watching my DVDs of the series "From the Earth to the Moon" because of it.

I have been doing a bit of star-gazing as well. The day before yesterday, I finally finished the main assembly on my telescope mount. It still needs staining and varnishing, but I wanted to try it to make sure it worked first. Well, it sort of works. The mount itself is great--but I still can't seem to get a good track out of it. You see, the base of the scope has a tracking motor in it. This rotates the mount one revolution every 24 hours, and this should compensate for the Earth's rotation. Well, I think the bulk of my mount, the scope, and my camera is too much for the little tracking motor to bear. So I guess the next step will be to design a new tracking base, with a bigger motor. That's going to have to be a ways off, and I'll have to save up for the parts.

But it was fun last night to get out there and have a sturdier mount! I got some nice shots of the comet Lovejoy, the Pleiades, and the Orion Nebula. (I'll show all those in the chat next weekend.)

Then just a little while ago, I was out in the backyard with my irrigation pipe boom for the camera. I had just built a little box with a couple of switches, and that is for running the camera's autofocus and shutter from a distance. So I was just going to raise the camera up and try a shot to make sure my electrical was good, when suddenly a scrub jay plopped down in our apple tree. It was way up near the top, so I thought "gee, I wonder how close I can get the camera to him?" So I raised the pole up and got to within around four feet and hit the focus button. It beeped, so that was working. Then I hit the shutter, and click! That made the bird take notice, and he flew off. So I got just the one shot, but boy is it a beauty! (I'm sending it along to be in the newsletter.) That is just one of the uses I had in mind when I was designing this boom. So I think I'm going to have some fun with that!

Well, time to get some more stuff done before we get settled in to watch the end of the football season. And the Puppy Bowl! (In many ways, I think the latter will be more fun...)

Have a great week, y'all, and see you next Sunday!
  Cheers, VacaDude

The Family of Tsaffirth We received this last week from tresbein:

"I'm writing with the sad news that tsaffirth has passed away. We noticed the attached post on her Facebook page just now, but there are no details of what happened. She had posted recently about great improvements in her health so we are shocked. She will be missed."

VacaDude's Brother-in-law, Duke I would ask for prayers and well-wishes for my brother-in-law Richard "Duke" Paiz, who suffered a stroke. He is about to be moved to an elder care facility. He was improving but has now hit a plateau. That's why they are moving him. But overall, he is doing much better, considering they were about to disconnect him from life support a few days after the stroke! So the prayers definitely did help!! (I am going to try to get up to visit him this week.) I extend a thank you from my entire family.  Keep the prayers coming!

Duke married my oldest sister Beverly in the late 1950s. Because my parents were at an advanced age when they had me (Mom was 41, dad was 46), and my dad had a massive heart attack when I was three, they made arrangements with Bebe and Duke that they would raise me until I was 18. So Duke was only a couple of heartbeats away from being my dad. As it was, we were very close, and I did a lot of camping and road trips with them. They never did have children of their own.

KSBorn KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.

VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin UPDATE:  WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!  "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."

TheDaddyBird, TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. We finally got the referral to the orthopedic surgeon who takes our insurance. His surgery will happen on March 2. They are doing the replacement anterior instead of posterior so his recovery time should be much shorter. His stay in the hospital is expected to be only about 2˝ days.

Marilyn Crabb We received this message this week from a long-time Molly watcher:

I don't join the online chats but I read the newsletter and was a Molly watcher from the beginning.

Last week, I was diagnosed with stage 2B (or greater) breast cancer and am undergoing lots of further tests and will begin chemotherapy on Tuesday. Please add me to the prayer list.

UPDATE:   Thank you for your prayers.  I'm doing really well after my first chemotherapy treatment.  One week down - nineteen to go.  Then surgery and radiation.  I have more tests scheduled to see if the cancer has spread beyond my armpit but so far it does not look like it has.

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  The latest news from Littleguys:
I can now give you an update on my Stage Zero Breast Cancer. As most of you know, or may remember, last Spring, I was diagnosed with this because mammograms are now done digitially and they blow them up until they find something. Over the summer, I had two lumpectomies. The lymph node they removed showed NO sign of cancer so all looks good and did not need chemotherapy.

On the other hand, oncologists love radiation. In my case, if I did NOT have radiation, there was a 30 - 50% chance of the cancer returning. With radiation, only a 3% chance, so of course we did radiation. Every day, five days a week for 6 weeks plus 3 days. That was finished the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Then wait five weeks and go back to the radiation center for a follow up. Everything looked ok, "sunburn" from the radiation healed nicely, though there are two, ok, three interesting side effects. One is that the some of the skin will be slightly discolored. Second is that I will probably never have hair in that armpit again, so no more shaving on that side. Silly, I know, but it is kind of interesting if no one every told you that before. Third, I probably won't need deodorant on that side either. Ok, I will use it any way, but who ever told us that as a side effect.

I feel fine. No longer need the afternoon naps EVERY single day that I seemed to require during the radiation.

My oncologist said I will have to have mammograms every six months for awhile. That part I don't like and I am sure the ladies reading this will understand. The men? Well, ask a lady in your life about mammograms.

Thank you for all the prayers and moral support.

Caboval Caboval is in need of our prayers for her dog, Joey. You can read more about Joey and his struggles here: http://gfwd.at/1n8NU0h.

LATEST UPDATE on Joey! Caboval writes: “Oh Joey isn't doing good and I'm so worried. He made it through cancer and is in remission and survived liver failure but something has happened to his leg. He had X-rays and there's no break but it looked like his neck had a pinched nerve. So, I'm doing cold laser therapy and no improvement. I'm doing chiropractor sessions, no improvement. Then on Friday he had acupuncture and now Joey can't walk at all on his leg and it's now been 4 weeks and no improvement. I had a prayer group for him on Facebook. I think the acupuncture somehow has hit nerves in his leg and he can't walk at all. I don't have any hope that he will be able to walk again and I'm at the point I may have to make a decision this coming week. I'm heartbroken and I'm praying for a miracle. I'm devastated and he is only 6 years old. I wish I had better news. Can you say a prayer for him?”

Elsalynda We got this message from elsa last week:

Hi all,

My computer crashed today and is at Staples in a kind of messy corner being diagnosed. I think it was my fault. I cannot even do my column this week, sigh. Say a prayer for me. So I will probably not see you on Sunday but "Hi," from me to all.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

Happy Sunday of football madness to you all! Of course, you know what Super Bowl means to me--MUNCHIES!! The Dude came home last night with a gigantic brick of Velveeta. He then promptly hid it from me. Grrr! Oh well, the snacks should be worth it today. He is going to make his cheezy bean dip with tortilla chips--YUM!! So I don't even know who is playing in the football game...all I know is we are going to have some yummy snacks.

Well, the garage has been a bizzy place for the last few days, as we finished up a couple of woodworking projects. The telescope mount is awesome, though it is apparently too heavy for the tracking motor to push. So we will probably be back in the garage someday making a new base. Oh well, it should be a pretty good set-up when it is all finished! And then we just finished some work on the camera boom. I still want to ride on that! I want to see if the Dude can make a little rig for me, and I can go up in the air with his cell phone and take a selfie from way in the air! That would be vun.

Well, it is time to go get buzzy and get ready for the big game! See you all next weekend, when we'll do the StoryTime again.

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Pennsylvania Dutch Corn Relish

  Ingredients

4 cups corn (approx. 12 ears or use frozen and skip step 1)
1 pint vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 head cabbage, shredded (approx. 4-5 cups)
2 small onions, chopped
2 red bell peppers, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
˝ cup celery, chopped

  Directions

Cut corn from cob.

Place all ingredients into a large pot and cook until tender, about 25 minutes.

Jar and seal. Process in hot water bath for 15 minutes.

Creamy Bratwurst and Potato Soup

  Ingredients:

2˝ pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed

20  ounces bratwursts, grilled and sliced

4 ounces Swiss cheese, grated

˝ gallon whole milk

˝ pint heavy cream

˝ pound butter or margarine

1 onion, minced

3 garlic cloves

Ľ teaspoon ground nutmeg

1˝ teaspoons white pepper

1˝ tablespoons hickory smoke salt

Ľ cup parsley

  Ingredients:

Melt butter in Dutch oven. On medium low heat, sweat onion, garlic, and potatoes.

Season with white pepper and salt. 4. Potatoes will begin to form a slurry from their starch. This is normal. Continue to sweat until potatoes begin to soften, adding liquid if necessary (beer, white wine, broth, etc).

When potatoes have softened, add milk, cream and nutmeg and bring to slow simmer. (From this point on, do not allow to boil. Only allow a slow simmer.) After returning to simmer, slowly add grated cheese and melt into mixture.

Add bratwurst, return to simmer, and simmer 30 minutes.

Salt and pepper to taste.

(If soup is too thin, or if soup has accidentally come to a boil and broken make a slurry made of 3 parts milk or water to 1 part flour and add a little at a time to the simmering soup allowing it to thicken before adding more.)

Stir in parsley.

Serve with your favorite salad and/or fresh garlic toast.

Shopkeeper Smith was alarmed when a new business, much like his own, opened in the storefront to the left of him. A huge sign was installed, reading BEST DEALS. Mr. Smith was troubled a second time when another competitor leased the building on his right, and erected a much larger sign, reading LOWEST PRICES. At this point Smith was really depressed, however, he came up with an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own shop..It read MAIN ENTRANCE.

Why is a carrot orange and pointy?
Because if it was green and round it would want to pea!

Zorro's Word
of the Week

ANODYNE

Pronunciation:  \AN-uh-dyne\

adjective

Definition of ANODYNE

1: serving to alleviate pain
2: not likely to offend or arouse tensions : innocuous

EXAMPLES

I felt nervous in their presence and couldn't muster anything more than an anodyne question about the weather.

"The cuisine of Spain is largely misunderstood in the United States, where what passes for Spanish food

is all too often an anodyne assemblage of yellow rice, green sauce and red peppers."

 — From a restaurant review by Erica Marcus in Newsday (New York), January 3, 2014

DID YOU KNOW?

"Anodyne" came to English via Latin from Greek "anōdynos" ("without pain"), and it has been used as

both an adjective and a noun ("something that relieves pain") since the 16th century.

It has sometimes been used of things that dull or lull the senses and render painful

experiences less so. Edmund Burke used it this way, for example, in 1790 when he referred to

flattery as an "anodyne draft of oblivion" that renders one (in this particular case,

the deposed king Louis XVI) forgetful of the flatterer's true feelings. In the 1930s,

a newer second sense began appearing in our vocabulary. Now, in addition to describing things

that dull pain, "anodyne" can also refer to that which doesn't cause discomfort in the first place.
