The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat.
If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out
link. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected. |

Vaca Blog |
Hello Vriends, | ||
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. Today is my day to
relax at home, after spending the last two days on the road.
On Friday, I got a chance to visit with some cousins I had not seen for a very long time. These are all folks on my Dad's side. There is my cousin Al, who was the only son of my Dad's older sister Agnes. Then there was Jan, who was the daughter of my Dad's other sister. So Jan and her husband were on their way to Arizona for their southern migration, whereas Al and his wife were on their way to Arizona for good (moving). They had all been living in northern Oregon. I guess folks can only take so much snow! So anyway, the two families were convoying down interstate 5, and my sister Jan arranged for us all to meet in Manteca at a Chili's restaurant for a late lunch. It was fun! I hadn't seen either cousin since the 70s, though I have been in touch with them both via Facebook. So it was a great visit! Then yesterday Mary and I drove to the unfortunately named Nevada City, which is actually in California. (Nevada is simply Spanish for "snow-capped") It was about a two hour drive from our house. We went for the "Wild & Scenic Film Festival," in which the "Tricky Bidness" movie I did graphics for was screening. This was the first time I had seen the film in a theater and with an audience. That was interesting, and the discussions after the screening were very interesting. This is the film that centers on the impact that the legalization of medical marijuana has had on the communities around Humboldt County in California. I think the film provides a very even-handed look at the good things and bad things that have happened there, so it was very interesting to see how the film played to a crowd that was largely pro-legalization. After the movie, we had a great lunch with the filmmaker, then took a stroll around the town of Nevada City. I had not set foot there since I was in college, and Mary had never been there. It is an old gold rush town, and I used to stop there when I would be driving from Chico to Tahoe to go skiing. I used to know of a B&B there that served Cornish pasties (Nevada City is the sister city of Cornwall, England because so many of the miners that came to work in the mines were coal miners from Cornwall). I got the recipe for those pasties at the time, and I have cherished it over the years. I'm going to make some next week, because they are just so good. Now Nevada City is a bedroom community for Sacramento, but also a bit of an artist enclave. There are a lot of galleries downtown, and they do a lot of film festivals and other artistic endeavors. The town reminds me of Crested Butte, Colorado. As we were walking around, a building known as the "Tinnery" caught our eye. It is one of those old buildings that are built way out of square because of the angles of the road. It was built in 1870, and it looks as though the first floor might have been a livery stable at some point. Most recently the building was used for a clothing store and vegetarian deli. Interesting building, and interesting town. But today we are home and watching some football. Go Packers!! I also see a nap in my near future. Not sure which will happen first—the end of the game or the loss of my consciousness. Time will tell. So have a great week, y'all—and we'll talk later! Cheers, VacaDude p.s. Oh, and speaking of football, I have been reminded that the first Sunday of February is Super Bowl Sunday, so the next chat will be on February 8th. |
||
Cheers, VacaDude | ||

Condolences are offered to Carlos and his family in the death of his

VacaDude's Brother-in-law, Duke |
I would ask for prayers and well-wishes for my brother-in-law Richard
"Duke" Paiz, who suffered a stroke last week, and is currently in the
hospital in Roseville, CA. He was nearly gone on Friday, but seems to
have rallied on Saturday. Duke married my oldest sister Beverly in the late 1950s. Because my parents were at an advanced age when they had me (Mom was 41, dad was 46), and my dad had a massive heart attack when I was three, they made arrangements with Bebe and Duke that they would raise me until I was 18. So Duke was only a couple of heartbeats away from being my dad. As it was, we were very close, and I did a lot of camping and road trips with them. They never did have children of their own. |

KSBorn | KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.
VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin | UPDATE: WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!! "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."
TheDaddyBird, | TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. We finally got the referral to the orhopedic surgeon who takes our insurance. His surgery will happen after the first of the year.
Marilyn Crabb | We received this message this week from a long-time
Molly watcher: I don't join the online chats but I read the newsletter and was a Molly watcher from the beginning. Last week, I was diagnosed with stage 2B (or greater) breast cancer and am undergoing lots of further tests and will begin chemotherapy on Tuesday. Please add me to the prayer list. UPDATE: Thank you for your prayers. I'm doing really well after my first chemotherapy treatment. One week down - nineteen to go. Then surgery and radiation. I have more tests scheduled to see if the cancer has spread beyond my armpit but so far it does not look like it has. My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream. (Marilyn from Los Angeles) |
||
Littleguys | UPDATE:
The latest news from Littleguys:
I can now give you an update on my Stage Zero Breast Cancer.
As most of you know, or may remember, last Spring, I was
diagnosed with this because mammograms are now done digitially
and they blow them up until they find something. Over the
summer, I had two lumpectomies. The lymph node they removed
showed NO sign of cancer so all looks good and did not need
chemotherapy.
On the other hand, oncologists love radiation. In my case, if I did NOT have radiation, there was a 30 - 50% chance of the cancer returning. With radiation, only a 3% chance, so of course we did radiation. Every day, five days a week for 6 weeks plus 3 days. That was finished the Monday after Thanksgiving. Then wait five weeks and go back to the radiation center for a follow up. Everything looked ok, "sunburn" from the radiation healed nicely, though there are two, ok, three interesting side effects. One is that the some of the skin will be slightly discolored. Second is that I will probably never have hair in that armpit again, so no more shaving on that side. Silly, I know, but it is kind of interesting if no one every told you that before. Third, I probably won't need deodorant on that side either. Ok, I will use it any way, but who ever told us that as a side effect. I feel fine. No longer need the afternoon naps EVERY single day that I seemed to require during the radiation. My oncologist said I will have to have mammograms every six months for awhile. That part I don't like and I am sure the ladies reading this will understand. The men? Well, ask a lady in your life about mammograms. Thank you for all the prayers and moral support. |

LATEST UPDATE on Joey! Caboval writes: “Oh Joey isn't doing good and I'm so worried. He made it through cancer and is in remission and survived liver failure but something has happened to his leg. He had X-rays and there's no break but it looked like his neck had a pinched nerve. So, I'm doing cold laser therapy and no improvement. I'm doing chiropractor sessions, no improvement. Then on Friday he had acupuncture and now Joey can't walk at all on his leg and it's now been 4 weeks and no improvement. I had a prayer group for him on Facebook. I think the acupuncture somehow has hit nerves in his leg and he can't walk at all. I don't have any hope that he will be able to walk again and I'm at the point I may have to make a decision this coming week. I'm heartbroken and I'm praying for a miracle. I'm devastated and he is only 6 years old. I wish I had better news. Can you say a prayer for him?”
Elsalynda | We got this message from elsa this week: Hi all, My computer crashed today and is at Staples in a kind of messy corner being diagnosed. I think it was my fault. I cannot even do my column this week, sigh. Say a prayer for me. So I will probably not see you on Sunday but "Hi," from me to all. Your elsalynda |

A Message from Zorro |
Hello there, Everbuddy!
Yayyy! It is football playoff season, and that means
snacktime. I have been cheering for the Green Bay
Packers, because any place that has fans who wear cheese
on their heads can't be all bad. Whenever they pan into
the crowd, I say I want to go nibble on everyone's hats.
The Dude tells me it wouldn't taste very good. Ach, what
does HE know? He uses Kraft American cheese on his
sandwiches. Ptooey!
The Dude and his Lady went to the Gold Country yesterday, but for some reason neglected to come home with any gold. I had suggested it (one can buy a lot of cheese with only a little bit of gold). Then you can make a hat out of it, or just eat it…whatever floats your canoe. Well, it is halftime, so I need to go do my Karaoke gig in the living room. Have a great week, everbuddy! |

Invitation | We need story writers! Please consider dropping in and checking out the fun we have writing the stories. Honestly, it's not at all difficult to join in and you'll surely be glad you did.
If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.
This week we feature recipes for the foods mentioned in last week's story.
Split Pea Soup with Ham |
|||
Ingredients | |||
½ stick butter 2-3 onions, diced 2 carrots, diced 2 stalks celery, diced 8 cups chicken base diced ham 1 pound split peas 1 teaspoon thyme Salt and pepper, to taste
|
|||
Directions | |||
Heat the butter in a large saucepan over medium-high
heat. Add the onion, carrot, and celery and cook until tender, 5 to 7
minutes. |
|||
Swedish Meatballs | |||
Ingredients: | |||
Meatballs 4 slices white bread, without the crusts, torn into pieces ½ cup heavy cream 3 pounds ground beef 2 small red onion (grated or very finely chopped) 2 eggs ¾ teaspoon onion powder ¾ teaspoon garlic powder, granulated 1 tablespoon parsley, dried ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper (freshly ground black) 4 tablespoons butter Gravy 1 quart beef broth ¼ cup flour ½ cup heavy cream ½ teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon garlic powder, granulated 1 tablespoon dried parsley 1 tablespoon dried dill weed ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper (freshly ground black) Ddried parsley |
|||
Ingredients: | |||
SIn a small bowl, soak the
bread in the milk until soft. In a large bowl, combine all the meatball
ingredients except the butter and oil, and add the soaked bread. Mix
thoroughly until smooth, it's best to use your hands for this. Shape
into small, golf-ball size meatballs (about 1 heaping tablespoon each).
By dipping your hands in cold water, the meatballs won't stick to your
hands. Heat butter and oil in a large electric skillet or sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs without crowding, and gently brown on all sides. Shake the skillet now and then so meatballs stay round and brown evenly. Place them on a baking pan and bake at 350° until just done – do not overcook. To make gravy, deglaze the skillet with 1 cup of the stock, letting it simmer for 5 minutes while scraping the bottom of the skillet with a spatula. Add the remaining stock. In a small bowl, mix the flour with ¼ cup of cold water until smooth. Whisk flour mixture into warm gravy, and let simmer, whisking constantly to prevent lumps, until thickened slightly, about 3-5 minutes. Add the cream and seasonings. To serve, arrange the meatballs on a serving platter, pour hot gravy over them, and garnish with parsley. Serve with buttered noodles or cooked rice, and sprinkled with parsley and a little more dill. Serve with raspberry jelly or preserves on the side. |

Russian Beryozka Dance
The Beryozka is a Russian ensemble of dances that originated in 1948.
There are a total of 100 members in the ensemble.
The dances are based on traditional folk melodies, which are then accompanied by chorus singing.
The Beryozka reflects heavily upon Russian culture.
Their
concerts have been performed in over 50 different countries from all around the
world.
I found the ensemble dance to be absolutely incredible, especially how
well-choreographed the performance was.
The traditional Russian dances seen here are known as "The Chain" and "The Birch Tree".
I hope you
enjoy the beauty and art of the Beryozka as much as I did!

CHOWDERHEAD
Pronunciation: \CHOW-der-hed\
noun
Definition of CHOWDERHEAD
dolt, blockhead
EXAMPLES
"No matter how hard I have tried I cannot stop them from yelling 'Chowderhead!'
and trying to poke one another's eyes out…." — From
Elizabeth Berg's 2002 novel True to Form
"Many of my fellow Americans enjoy the sport of football….
If you're like me, you often opine that you could run the team, the program,
or the franchise in immeasurably greater fashion than the
millionaire chowderheads currently employed to do so."
— From an article by Timothy Geigner at Techdirt.com,
January 1, 2014
DID YOU KNOW?
The "chowder" in "chowderhead" is neither New England nor Manhattan
(though one could speculate that a chowderhead has either type of clam chowder for brains).
"Chowderhead" is a mispronunciation of "jolterhead," a derivative of the
16th-century insult "jolt head." Before being extended to a thickheaded person
(i.e., a blockhead), the term "jolt head" was used literally for a large, heavy head.
The etymology of "jolt head" is obscure; the term is likely connected somehow to the
"jolt" that means "an abrupt jerky blow or movement," but the exact nature of
the connection is not known.
Name That Synonym: What synonym of "chowderhead" rhymes with "soap"? The answer
is …
