Channel Links

The pop-out chat link still uses the old style chat. If you do not like the changes Ustream has made to chat, use the pop-out link.

The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space.

Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat.

Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other.

I hope this helps.

Pop-Out
If you want to view the chat or video in pop-out screens, use the links below. Some find that this places less stress on their computer and/or its memory.

If you use the pop-out links, it is recommended that you open two browser windows. That way, if one needs to be refreshed, the other is not affected.

  Hello Vriends,
Here we are--at the last weekend before Christmas. Has everyone got their stockings stuffed? Got your hams ready to be cooked?

The last few days have been quiet around here. It has allowed me some time for quiet reflection. For instance, it was on this day in 1968 that the Apollo 8 mission lifted off aboard the mighty Saturn V rocket. This was the first mission in which men from Earth would leave the orbit of their home planet and head out to the Moon. To me, this mission was nearly as momentous as the actual landing mission. Even at the tender age of seven, I was dumbstruck by the fact that we were going to be seeing our Earth as we had never seen it before. And of course, there was that moment captured by the Apollo 8 crew of the first time they saw the Earth rising above the lunar surface--a picture that became known as "Earthrise." I've got my various recordings from the Apollo 8 mission out and ready to watch over the course of the next few days--of course culminating in that stirring reading from the book of Genesis on Christmas Eve.

Also, this last Friday marked a milestone in our family--my father would have turned 100 years old (he only made it to 84). So I spent some time in the last few days gathering old photographs and thinking about the man who helped give me the gift of life. I found all of these photos from when he was in the army, from his hunting and trapping days in Montana, his shots where he was working on various cars, him sitting out in front of his first garage--all wonderful snapshots of his life.

And of course, this week saw the ending of a couple of my favorite shows on television--the Colbert Report had its final episode on Thursday, and the Late Late show with Craig Ferguson ended on Friday. So many changes...I really hate to see those guys go.

I actually entered a couple more contests this last week. One was for a spaceship design for the group https://enterpriseinspace.org/vote/ (I made design #8), where they are planning on building the final design and putting it into orbit. I only found out about the contest a couple of days before the entries were due, so I threw something together in a hurry. So I really didn't stand a chance against the folks who had known about the contest since September! Another contest was for another 3D Printer, and was hosted by Make magazine. That one was judged strictly within the magazine staff, and it was awarded to somebody else. Oh well...

Speaking of 3D Printers, I finally heard from XYZprinting on Friday, and they gave me an update. For one thing, they had originally said the loan period was "a few months," but they just informed me that the longest loan period they could allow was six weeks. So a little miscommunication there. Secondly, because of their inventory situation with Christmas, and then the fact that they will be going crazy at CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in January, they are estimating it will not be until mid February that they will be able to ship a printer to me. So for the time being, I will be doing everything I can think of in preparation for receiving the printer, and learning as much as I can.

I'm thinking I may get started on the Molly figurine in January, so that some of those will be available by the February-March timeframe, which will mark the five year anniversary of the beginning of Carlos's broadcasts. I don't really need a prototype for that; I can just use polymer clay to create my master object.

So that's about it from here. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!
  Cheers, VacaDude

ChatterChopz CC had a karate tournament last week. It was a much more relaxed, laid-back tournament than usual. They've just finished the move into their new dojo, so there wasn't much time to prepare for a full-blown event. Even so, she came home with a medal earned in her newest martial arts discipline, Guided Chaos Combatives.

Elsa also tells us that she has had a poem selected for publication. She says she is very excited to be a part of this book and feels like a poet in good company, with known authors. Her poem on Great Horned Owls has a page with a beautiful photo opposite. Her writing group helped her with this piece. The book should be out in early 2015—it is now in the proof stage.

VacaDude's Brother-in-law, Duke I would ask for prayers and well-wishes for my brother-in-law Richard "Duke" Paiz, who suffered a stroke last week, and is currently in the hospital in Roseville, CA. He was nearly gone on Friday, but seems to have rallied on Saturday.

Duke married my oldest sister Beverly in the late 1950s. Because my parents were at an advanced age when they had me (Mom was 41, dad was 46), and my dad had a massive heart attack when I was three, they made arrangements with Bebe and Duke that they would raise me until I was 18. So Duke was only a couple of heartbeats away from being my dad. As it was, we were very close, and I did a lot of camping and road trips with them. They never did have children of their own.

KSBorn KSBorn was in regression for lymphoma and breast cancer. It has since returned and she's going for Chemo now. She and her doctors are attacking it vigorously and she needs our prayers. She needs our prayers for healing, for the Lord to guide her doctors, and for the peace and strength as she undergoes the treatment.

VacaDude and his cousin, Kevin UPDATE:  WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!  "Our family got some news this last week from my cousin Kevin, and it was wonderful: the latest tests show that he is in full remission!! So I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers; it meant a lot to me and to Kevin. If you could extend a few of those prayers to his mother Irene, I would really appreciate it. In a cruel twist of fate, Kevin's mom was diagnosed with lymphoma--very similar to Kevin's--that was located in her abdomen. Last I heard, she was responding well to the chemo. Apparently it made for some lively chemo treatment sessions--mother and son in together! They have always been a fun family, and I really hope Irene pulls through as well."

TheDaddyBird, TheDaddyBird is also facing hip replacement real soon. We finally got the referral to the orhopedic surgeon who takes our insurance. He see's him this week and then we wait for the date to be set. It'll happen after the first of the year.

Marilyn Crabb We received this message this week from a long-time Molly watcher:

I don't join the online chats but I read the newsletter and was a Molly watcher from the beginning.

Last week, I was diagnosed with stage 2B (or greater) breast cancer and am undergoing lots of further tests and will begin chemotherapy on Tuesday. Please add me to the prayer list.

UPDATE:   Thank you for your prayers.  I'm doing really well after my first chemotherapy treatment.  One week down - nineteen to go.  Then surgery and radiation.  I have more tests scheduled to see if the cancer has spread beyond my armpit but so far it does not look like it has.

My screen name was/is MarilynLA on UStream.  (Marilyn from Los Angeles)

Littleguys  UPDATE:  The latest news from Littleguys:
Have now finished one week, as in five days, of radiation treatment.  Wondering if the upset tummy is a side effect or coming down with something.  See the oncologist once each week during the radiation so did tell him about it.
Do you or anyone in your family sew?  Simple project?

Caboval Caboval is in need of our prayers for her dog, Joey. You can read more about Joey and his struggles here: http://gfwd.at/1n8NU0h.

LATEST UPDATE on Joey! Caboval writes: “Oh Joey isn't doing good and I'm so worried. He made it through cancer and is in remission and survived liver failure but something has happened to his leg. He had X-rays and there's no break but it looked like his neck had a pinched nerve. So, I'm doing cold laser therapy and no improvement. I'm doing chiropractor sessions, no improvement. Then on Friday he had acupuncture and now Joey can't walk at all on his leg and it's now been 4 weeks and no improvement. I had a prayer group for him on Facebook. I think the acupuncture somehow has hit nerves in his leg and he can't walk at all. I don't have any hope that he will be able to walk again and I'm at the point I may have to make a decision this coming week. I'm heartbroken and I'm praying for a miracle. I'm devastated and he is only 6 years old. I wish I had better news. Can you say a prayer for him?”

Elsalynda We got this message from elsa last week:

Hi all,

Thanks for all your prayers. This computer is so hard to type on. I dislike it but will have to use it for now. I saw the MGH sleep specialist today for consult and got some scary news. My apnea is severe and REM behavior disorder is rare and correlated with parkinson's disease. There is not much treatment available for the REM but I will try what there is. Please pray for me again. I am worried.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!

It is Zorro here, spreading lots of Christmas cheer. And by "spreading Christmas cheer," of course, I mean nibbling on peanut brittle. Does that count?

I think the Dude is planning to do something for Christmas eve, but I'm not sure what time. I'm just looking forward to slipping into my old jammies! (I haven't had a chance to wear those for a while.) So I'll be reading something Christmassy. So bring some eggnog, or something along those lines, roast your chestnuts on the fire--whatever floats your boat! It will probably be sometime before the normal time-slot, so hopefully we can put an e-mail notification out for it.

I guess it is going to be some time before the 3D printer thingie arrives. I know one of the things the Dude told me he was going to make for me was a football helmet. Well, given the way the 49ers have been playing, I guess it is just as well--we can wait until next year on that! (Congratulations to the San Diego Chargers for their come-from-behind win last night.) But I sure hope that printer gets here soon. I have some ideas in mind for modifications to the Steampunk Rocketship!

Well, it is time to get busy again--doing all of the things expected of a mouse on a Sunday afternoon. By Golly, there are housewives to terrorize!! Chop chop!!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

If anyone wants to request a recipe or a recipe category, just email me.

Party Meatballs

  Ingredients

16 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 (12-ounce) jar chili sauce
1 (12-ounce) can jellied cranberry sauce
1 (10.5-ounce) jar Red Pepper Jelly (we use our own homeade—see below)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
few shakes hot sauce (optional)
1 (32-ounce) bag Frozen Meatballs

  Directions
Add meatballs and stir to coat them well.

Put in crock pot on LOW for 6-8 hours or HIGH for 2-2½ hours.

Pepper Jelly

This jelly can be used in so many ways. It makes a great glaze on chicken or pork chops. It's terrific spread on a turkey or roast beef sandwich. Our favorite way to it is with a dab of cream cheese on a cracker.
  Ingredients:

8-12 jalapeño peppers
3 bell peppers
3 cups white vinegar
12 cups sugar
3 packets Certo (liquid pectin)
1 teaspoon food coloring**

  Directions:

Place jars and lids in boiling water until needed.

Process peppers in food chopper until almost pureed.

Add to large pot. Mix in vinegar and sugar. Blend well.

Bring mixture to a rolling boil and boil for 6 minutes, stirring frequently and watching carefully to prevent boil-over. Remove from heat.

Add Certo and food coloring quickly.

Put into hot jars. Wipe rims clean and seal with hot lids. Secure ring tightly. Invert jars for 5 minutes. Turn right side up and watch for good seal. Let cool completely before storing.

*This amount can vary according to how hot you want it.
Hot – 3 red bell peppers and 12 jalapeños
Mild – 3 green bell peppers and 8 jalapeños

**Red or green I use red for hotter jelly and-green for milder jelly.

Russian Beryozka Dance

The Beryozka is a Russian ensemble of dances that originated in 1948.

There are a total of 100 members in the ensemble.

The dances are based on traditional folk melodies, which are then accompanied by chorus singing.

The Beryozka reflects heavily upon Russian culture.

Their concerts have been performed in over 50 different countries from all around the world.

I found the ensemble dance to be absolutely incredible, especially how well-choreographed the performance was.

The traditional Russian dances seen here are known as "The Chain" and "The Birch Tree".

I hope you enjoy the beauty and art of the Beryozka as much as I did!

Sharoot's Caboose

Sharoot shares two birds spotted on her daily walk.

Looks to me like this pileated woodpecker is decorating the tree.

Those are actually sweet gum balls but we can pretend they are Christmas balls!

This mocking bird is ready for the holiday season.

Zorro's Word
of the Week

OPUSCULUM

Pronunciation:  \oh-PUSK-yuh-lum\

noun

Definition of HEGIRA

a minor work (as of literature)

EXAMPLES

The book is a collection of opuscula written by the author between her two major novels.

"Little surprise, then, that McCall Smith has written a kindly, avuncular, contemplative opusculum

sharing his enthusiasm with the uninitiated."

— From an article by Richard Davenport-Hines in The Spectator, November 9, 2013

DID YOU KNOW?
"Opusculum"—which is often used in its plural form "opuscula"—comes from Latin,

where it serves as the diminutive form of the noun "opus," meaning "work."

In English, "opus" can refer to any literary or artistic work, though it often specifically

refers to a musical piece. Logically, then, "opusculum" refers to a short or minor work.

("Opusculum" isn't restricted to music, though. In fact, it is most often used for literary works.)

The Latin plural of "opus" is "opera," which gave us (via Italian) the word we know for a

musical production consisting primarily of vocal pieces performed with orchestral accompaniment.

Word Family Quiz: What 7-letter relative of "opusculum" can mean "to use and control"? The answer is …
