A Note From the Dude   Chatter
News
    VacaBlog

  Hello Vriends,
Happy Memorial Day to you all! Unfortunately (or fortunately, from my financial perspective), I am working through the weekend with the client that I have been dancing around with for over a month. It was on, then off, then it was a go, then at the last minute it was off. Basically, she is a producer who works with a client who has an in-house designer, so they wanted the in-house person to do the work. However, that person was already overloaded. Well, finally they threw in the towel and so I got brought in to try to get it all done in a weekend. Whee!

Anyway, the place is sure nice--the producer lives in the hills above Mill Valley, CA. What a lovely place! In the Marin area north of San Francisco, at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais. There's a spring-fed waterfall within about a ten minute hike from her home. It makes for a great lunch break. How nice it must be to live in an area of such beauty. Of course, I don't know what I'm saying--I've got Ulatis Creek within five minutes walking from here. There I can see a little bit of water oozing playfully around a collection of discarded tires and beverage containers. Then there's always CVS Pharmacy right across the street, where I can get my social interaction with the collection of homeless folks who sleep outside it. ::sigh::

Anyway, I need to get myself into the car and head down the road. So have a great holiday weekend, and we'll see you next week!

  Cheers, VacaDude

Chatter News

Ann Savage Ann shares with us this wonderful news:  “My latest news is that we have a new grandbaby on the way [due mid August], and the doctor thinks it's a girl! She'll be our third grandchild, joining cousins Lucas, 13, and Adrian, 3. :)”  Congratulations to Ann and her family.

Elsalynda Elsalynda's latest column entitled Nature in the City: Spring Blooms in Waltham Amid Chill Winds , is available online here:

http://waltham.wickedlocal.com/article/20140513/NEWS/140519854/2012/OPINION

Elsa is in need of a good, used Windows computer (4 years old or newer). Her computer died and she bought a new high end Dell laptop Latitude 6540 but the materials and chemicals used in making this new computer are causing her health problems. The new one is available for purchase or trade.

We'd love to include more news of VacaChatters. If you have something you'd like to share (something about you or your family) or if you know of exciting news about another chatter that they're just too shy to share, please send it to us! (We won’t run it without that chatter’s permission, however.)

ChatterChopz ChatterChopz' ankle is improving, but still causing her a good bit of pain. She's still got a limp. She was unable to return to karate this last week. She saw the doc this week and he is still certain there is no break, just one of the worst sprains he's ever seen. He predicts another 4 weeks or so of recovery. She's not a happy camper.

Caboval Caboval is in need of our prayers for her dog, Joey. You can read more about Joey and his struggles here: http://gfwd.at/1n8NU0h.

UPDATE on Joey! Caboval writes: “Joey is in remission but the chemo almost killed him. He was in liver failure and the Dr gave him a 50/50 chance to live. He made it through that and we have had 3 really good weeks. He was so happy and acting like a puppy, but now he is starting to not eat again and he vomited today so I don't know… It's a rollercoaster. I have a feeling he is having liver issues again. I do really need those prayers!!!”

Elsalynda Elsalynda is also in need of prayers. She is asking for prayers for good care and caring from her primary care physician. Elsa reports that at her last visit, her physician "was at least civil and apologetic." She also reports that her back issues are improving and thanks everyone for their prayers and support. Continue to keep Elsa and her doctor in your prayers.

GentleDoe GentleDoe says her father is recovering. He has moved to a rehab facility. Doe is trying desperately to juggle being with her mother and yet also caring for her birds and other animals. She especially needs prayers about the financial situation and some rather difficult family dynamics. With no transportation and having to rely on others for rides, this has been very difficult for her. The whole family is still in need of our prayers.

Jes and Miss Jonesy Both Jes, and her furkid, Miss Jonesy, are battling health issues and undergoing various tests and procedures. Let's keep both of them in our prayers.

Shari in Memphis UPDATE!!! Just received this from Shari:  "So kind of you to keep prayers going for me. I was hospitalized in November for an event (that just yesterday my doc said was severe enough that it could have killed me) and have pretty much been sick ever since.  I'm trying to be patient as doc said it would take 6 months to a year, to fully recover."

Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts for owl our wonderful VacaFamily members!  If you have any prayer requests, updates or news of answered prayers, please let us know. Email us with the information so it can be included in the next newsletter.

A Message
from Zorro

  Hello there, Everbuddy!
It is your old pal Zorro here. The Dude just headed out the door, heading off to Silly Vally, or Milly Valley, or something like that. He don't know what he is missing! I'm going to go over to the creek today and help myself to some of the cool cans and bottles I find in the creek bed. I have a hiding place in the backyard that the Dude doesn't know about. Oh, and in his closet. And a little spillover behind the refrigerator...

Oh well, tomorrow we get to have hot dogs! Yes, it is time to get out the BBQ grill. Maybe along the creek I can find a new lid for the Dude's grill?

Anyway, see you next week!

  Yours Most Whiskerly,
Zorro

  Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes
  Ingredients

2 pounds ground beef

1 onion, chopped

1 cup celery diced

2 garlic cloves minced

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 cup catsup

1 tablespoon beef base

½ teaspoon paprika

¼ teaspoon pepper

1 can tomato paste, 6 oz.

1¼ cups water

3 tablespoons vinegar

1 tablespoon. brown sugar

1 teaspoon dry mustard

  Directions

Brown the meat, onions, garlic and celery together and drain off fat.

Combine meat and remaining ingredients in the crock pot, stirring well. Cover and cook on low 6-8 hours; or high 3-4 hours. Serve on buns or over noodles.

Chicken Pillows

  Ingredients

Pillows:

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

½ cup sour cream

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

1½ tablespoons dried chives

1½ tablespoons fresh onion minced

3 chicken breasts, cooked and diced (around 3 cups)

2 (8 ounce) cans crescent rolls

¼ cup melted butter

Italian bread crumbs (around 2 cups)

Gravy:

1 (14.5 ounce) can cream of chicken or celery soup

1 (0.87) package chicken gravy mix (3 tablespoons mix)

Water

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Using a hand mixer or by hand, beat cream cheese and sour cream until well combined. You can do this by hand if your cream cheese is soft enough. Stir in salt, pepper, onion, chives, and diced chicken.

Using crescent rolls, take 2 triangular rolls and push together at perforated seam to make into a square. Make sure you seal the perforations well so your filling doesn't come out.

Put about 3 tablespoons of chicken mixture in the center of each square. Fold the dough corners to the center over the chicken mixture forming a pillow.

Dip each pillow in melted butter on both sides. Roll in bread crumbs on both sides. Shake excess crumbs off.

Place chicken pillow on cookie sheet and bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes.

Make gravy by mixing one package of chicken gravy mix, one can of cream of chicken soup and ¾ can of water in a small pot. Mix together and heat until warm.

Serve chicken pillows with gravy poured over top.

From the Dude

This is a photo that I took at the Maker Faire last week--there is this guy who makes insanely cool armor for mice and cats!

From Sharoot

Look what I saw earlier this week at Brick Pond Park in North Augusta, SC!  My very first owl in the wild!  He is watching me watch him.  I think he has a crush on me.

She was a cutie pie too.  I didn't see Mom or Dad, but was told they were around.
