| The pop-out chat link no longer uses the old style chat.
However, it is still a nice way to save on memory and be able to refresh
without losing both chat and video. The easiest way to do this is to open the pop-out chat in a browser window. Log in. (Type a period in the chat line—hit enter. This will open the login screen.) Size this chat window to equal about 1/3 of your desktop space. Then open a new window or tab (Ctrl-T or Ctrl-N in most browsers) and use it to open the pop-out video. If you opened a new tab, you can then click on the tab and drag it to an open space on your desktop. Size it to about 2/3 of your desktop space beside the chat. Now you have both open and can refresh one without disturbing the other. You can resize either without resizing the other. I hope this helps. |

| Sad News from Alessondra's OKC Great Horned Owl Cam |
| I received this news in my email last week. |
| Many of you all know Steve
Johnson has served as a temp mod for us in chat, and who is also
Managing Editor for our local NBC affiliate, KFOR-TV. Ali Meyer is one
of their anchors who has covered the OKC Owl Cam from its inception,
with one of her past stories about this project even being picked up by
CNN and NBC. Unfortunately, the story that will air tonight (and later
be posted here) about the OKC Owl Cam is one of sadness. There is no easy way to tell you this. Deziray was recently contacted by a neighbor from a nearby block and asked to come look at what the neighbor thought was an injured owl. When Deziray arrived, she found a familiar owl that was, unfortunately, not injured but deceased. She carefully wrapped the owl up and brought it home, notifying me of the situation. I came home and we both thought, based on size and markings, that it had to be Mr. Tiger. We reached out to our usual expert advisors, both of whom suspected secondary poisoning by ingesting a rodent who’d eaten rodenticide. That evening, we shared the news with Alessondra. She was devastated, as you can imagine. Working on the assumption that he was poisoned, we began discussing ways we could honor him with a campaign to educate fans and the public about the unintentional consequences of using rodenticides. We talked about all of the potential good things that could come from this and ways we would make sure he didn’t die in vain. We wanted to know facts, and we believed that the Tigers, Alessondra, and the OKC Owl Community deserved to know what happened. So the next morning, Deziray drove him to Stillwater, where we commissioned a necropsy at the OK State University’s Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. The following day, Deziray heard from the vet at the lab. The news was not at all what we had expected or hoped. The owl was not male, but female. Her cause of death was not from rodenticide. She was shot. The report states that the necropsy examination reveals acute, focal, severe pleural and pulmonary laceration accompanied by regionally extensive intracoelomic hemorrhage. The character and distribution of the lacerations are suggestive of projectile trauma, although no projectile (bullet) was found. After receiving the news, as astounding as it was, we went back and compared markings and believe strongly that it was, indeed, Mrs. Tiger. She was too large and too ornate to be a recent owlet, and the necropsy reports this was a mature adult owl. We originally thought it was Mr. Tiger because she seemed smaller than we were used to seeing her…but we usually see her up close when she’s “fattened up” for the long-haul on the nest. Comparing photos, the markings are indeed consistent with Mrs. Tiger’s. We are as disheartened by this as I’m sure you are. Who could do this to an owl, let alone one that is perhaps among the most well-known owls in the world? That’s a question Deziray and I have asked ourselves a lot over the past several days. Was it an adult who was tired of the hooting? A careless kid who didn’t know the seriousness of his actions? While we’ve determined it our duty to report it, it is not our burden to prove who did it, nor within our power to take it much further on our own. I have been in contact with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and have spoken at length with the Game Warden who oversees Oklahoma County. I have shared with him all of the details and evidence, of which we have a considerable amount, along with the OADL’s necropsy report. We hope that information, combined with the interest generated by KFOR’s story, will ensure Mrs. T does not leave us in vain. In the meantime, we mourn the loss of Mrs. Tiger and await her to be returned to us when she will be provided a peaceful and ceremonial place in Alessondra's play yard, where she will rest in the love of the little girl who discovered her and helped share her story. Where she will remain in the territory of her mate, Mr. Tiger, who continues to appear on rooftops nearby at dawn and dusk to this day. And while it was not as picturesque as perhaps she fantasized, Alessondra can at least say that she has finally been able to hold and pet the owl whose soulful connection she has enjoyed over the past several years of her childhood. We want you, our closest friends and followers in this experience, to know how sorry we are to bring you this news. We mourn with you and will keep you updated as we know more. | Hello Vriends, | ||

My apologies, but I am going to have to make this brief. Mary
and I are trying to get into the car to drive north to Yreka,
CA. That's about a six hour drive. We are going back to one of
her home towns to help celebrate the 80th birthday of her
childhood friend's father. His name is Don, and I kind of
inherited him as a friend by way of marriage. But I think the
world of the guy! His birthday party is on Sunday, but I am
looking forward to tomorrow--I am going to hang out with him
while Mary drives out to visit her sisters. Don worked for the
Forestry Department (and still does freelancing for them!), and
he does a lot with reclaimed wood from fallen trees. Then he
planes them in his workshop and makes the most insanely cool
lumber. I have always wanted to watch him do that, so Saturday
we are scheduled to have a "guys' day" and mess around in the
woodshop. After doing all this stuff with printing plastics, I
am very much looking forward to breathing-in the aroma of
freshly-hewn wood! And hopefully I will learn a thing or two.
I have slowly been getting my confidence back on the 3D printing. I have the machine working fairly well. Some things that I thought were real problems turned out to only need a little tweaking in my procedures. In short, I am starting to get a general feel for the process, so when something does go wrong I am amassing a bag of tricks with which to get past the obstacle. I am taking a number of notebooks with me for the trip north--any down-time I hope to do some designing. I've got several projects that were logjammed behind the non-functioning printer, and now I want to get those done! Our photo assignment in the club for next month is "Fall Colors," so I am taking my camera gear with me on the trip as well. I am hoping to go out on Sunday morning and get some shots. The area we are in is in the shadow of Mount Shasta, so the landscape is very beautiful in its own way. So I'm looking forward to doing some photo taking. And I am bringing some drawing supplies with me, because I have fallen behind again for InkTober! I just got caught up, then I started having these dizzy spells. It turns out almost certainly that they were caused by low blood sugar levels. I have been taking several supplements, and I have not had any really bad dizzy spells since then. So I need to be a bit more careful as I press forward with this diet. Well, I still have a bit more packing to go, so I need to get back to it. We are getting such a late start on the day--we may not be arriving to the hotel until after midnight at this rate! |

An update from Jes (as of 10/09/2006)
Since Ustream has cut me out of chat, I thought my friends might want to
know what I have done in the last two months. I had my roof replaced. While they were to do it, I took off to visit an old friend I have had since 1956. She lives in Yeovil England now. A village of 900 with no store, etc. Have to go to the larger village for gas, etc. I stayed in a wonderful small hotel with a garden room called The Hollies. Next village over. Had colts (horses) outside my garden and the pub was 3 star for food. Weather beyond perfect each day and it was lovely to see green lawns again!! Lovely flowers in the National Trust Estates we toured. Went to Bath on the train, drove to Wells Cathedral one day. Just really messed around and met her friends. Lovely relaxing until I returned home to find out they had NOT started my roof so I had to live thru the nailing. Plus no hot water, heat wave going on with the house all closed up and a flat tire while running errands. I was ready to fly back even dealing with the 11 hour flight, the coach, and the 2 hr. train ride to her village. Not easy to reach Tintinhull. Try googling Tintinhull Yeovil UK. In the middle of nowhere! Currently I had planned to go to Hilton Head Island to visit old friends, then up to DC to visit some friends I have not seen in over 45 ys. next week. Hurricane Matthew messed up that trip. They still do not know what condition their home has been left in after the surge. I am also dating some one I have known for 50 years.....at least I have as smile on my face now after breaking up with the boyfriend of 42 years! So I have been busy but unable to chat with all my old friends on Vacachat. I did lurk until Ustream took that away too! Now I can just watch Vaca speak but no chatting on the side. Guess you have to sign in to just read the chat and not lurk. Lots of other small stuff has happened too. My life is busy and flying by suddenly. I have no idea where time goes anymore. I miss everyone in the chat room and I wish some of the ones from a couple of years would return. Elsa asks about us but she doesn't join anymore. We need a new location so we can post the word and get returning chatters that we miss! |

Arkansas, for health reasons, and looking forward to hub moving up here
in a couple of years, when he retires. It's gorgeous in the country, and
I love that we were able to find a place on a stream. Lots of wild

Zorro here. Wow, I just got to the microphone, and the
orchestra has started playing the music! I guess the
show is going long--but whose fault it THAT?!?
Sorry--confoozing award show reference there. Forget that. Anyway, the Dude is running from one end of the house to the other--gathering stuff, hurling it into a suitcase...I get the sense we are getting ready to go somewhere. I think I heard Eureka. That's a lovely place--right on the ocean, the gateway to the Pacific Northwest, it's beautiful with the fog and... wait a minute... the Dude is trying to get my attention. Oh, it's not Eureka? It's Yreka. What's a Yreka? About 100 or so miles inland. So much for the fog and ocean. What is there? Hills of manzanita brush? Cold? SNOW?!? Have fun. I'm going to stay here where it is warm. Here if I get cold I can always turn the 3D printer on and get warm by the extruder. You can create the oddest things just trying to stay warm! A couple of days ago we got some rain and it got really cold in the house, so I turned the hot plastic on and next thing I knew there was a statue of a chicken standing before me! At least, I think it is a chicken. The Dude says it looks more like a pair of binoculars. I guess it all matters about the eye of the beholder. It's kind of like how they say that everything tastes like chicken? To me, everything tastes like *cheese*. Everything LOOKS like chicken. Well, I guess I should go help him pack. Or at least supervise and offer-up my invaluable advice. It looks like he needs it!! Catch ya later, Taterz! |

Coat the inside of your slow cooker with butter or cooking spray. Place all ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on low for 7 hours or high for 4 hours. |

Slow-Cooker Braised Beef, Pork and Black Beans |

|
Beef, Pork and Beans 1 pound dried black beans (2 cups), sorted, rinsed 4 slices bacon, diced 1 pound boneless pork shoulder or butt, cut into 1½-inch cubes ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 pounds boneless beef chuck, cut into 1½-inch pieces 1 large onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1¼ cups chicken broth 1 smoked ham hock (about 1 lb) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Collard Greens 2 bunches collard greens (about 2 lb) 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Accompaniments 5 cups cooked white rice 3 oranges |

Soak beans in cold water 8 hours or overnight. Spray 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Heat 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Add bacon; cook until crispy and brown. Using slotted spoon, transfer bacon to slow cooker. Season pork shoulder with ¼ teaspoon of the salt and ¼ teaspoon of the pepper. Increase heat to medium-high. Cook pork in bacon drippings 3 minutes on each side or until well browned. Transfer pork to slow cooker. Season chuck evenly with remaining ¼ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Add to skillet; cook about 3 minutes on each side or until well browned. Place in slow cooker. Reduce heat of skillet to medium; add onions to skillet. Cook about 4 minutes or until softened. Add 4 cloves garlic; cook 1 minute. Transfer to slow cooker. Stir to combine. Drain beans; add beans, broth and ham hock to slow cooker. Cover; cook on Low heat setting 8 hours or until beans and meat are tender. Remove ham hock; let cool enough to handle. Remove meat from hock; shred into small pieces, and return to slow cooker. Stir in vinegar. Meanwhile, cut away tough stalks and stems from collard greens. Wash collards thoroughly. Stack up several leaves, and roll up lengthwise in a bundle; cut them into 1-inch strips. Repeat until all leaves are shredded. In 12-inch skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add 4 cloves garlic; cook about 2 minutes or until starting to brown. Add the greens; toss well with oil and garlic. Cook 2 to 4 minutes or until wilted. Season with ½ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper. Serve beef, pork and beans over white rice with collard greens and orange segments. |

DID YOU KNOW?
Guerdon dates back to the 14th century, when Geoffrey Chaucer used it in The Romaunt of the Rose (ca. 1366): "He quitte him wel his guerdon there." It derives from Anglo-French and is thought to be related to the Old High German widarlōn, meaning "reward." Shakespeare used guerdon a couple of times in his plays. In Love's Labour's Lost, for example, Berowne, attendant to King Ferdinand, sends the clown Costard to deliver a letter to Rosaline, attendant to the princess of France, handing him a shilling with the line, "There's thy guerdon; go." Guerdon is a rare word today, but contemporary writers do use it on occasion for poetic effect.
